Have you been at a Street Takeover? If so, why'd you go and was it worth it? If you haven't, have you seen them happen before? I'd love to hear about your personal experiences with this odd...activity. Of course, thanks for watching and hopefully, subbing!

Am I guilty of drifting or sliding as the cool kids call it off the highway at night or a windy road…. yes. But whenever I do anything like that I make sure I AM THE ONLY one who can be injured. With street racing they go to spots to avoid contact with pedestrians. The part of takeovers that I cannot get down with that is causing a terrible look for all of us. is their total and complete lack of care for pedestrians and other people.

I've been to 1 "takeover" in my life, I was at a late night car meet and some guy in a 370z was talking up how good of a driver he was to anyone who would listen (he also said that I was probably a shitty driver cuz I'm gay just to give you an idea of the kinda person this was). After a while everyone was kinda sick of him so he decided to "prove himself" by going to one of the intersections outside the meet lot to start doing some donuts, then a Hyundai Genesis and an Rx8 joined in and shit started to get wild. The cops eventually got called causing the meet to scatter and in the chaos 370z guy smacked a curb and destroyed his rear suspension before trying to escape on foot, idk what happened to him after that I dipped out and hid in a convenience store nearby and when I cop saw my modded VW and asked if I knew anything about the takeover that was going on nearby I feigned ignorance and he left me alone. I don't think that was a worth wile experience I'll just stick to more well organized events from now on and not go to sketchy midnight meets I hear about on Instagram.

I have been, I have participated in PARKING LOT takeovers in past years, and i think they need to STOP. There are people/companies out there who will make a designated space for this type of "event". this should not be done on public roads. The worst part about it is people outside of the car community don't understand the difference between cars that are highly modified and go to shows and charities and sponsored events, and cars that have few modifications and just like reeking havoc on the road. WE ARE NOT THE SAME. But car enthusiast like myself are often mistaken for those who partake in street takeovers so the wrong crowd gets targeted.

When it comes to street racing I feel like most people try to go to a place that is empty and not public with a lot of people around. Hell in Initial D they have spotters to make sure there isn't traffic around blind corners so they can actually race as "safe" as possible. When I have gone to places we usually are out of the city or in an industrial area.

Then on our 3rd or 4th setup me and this dude rolled past a cop going 40 in 2nd gear, door to door, windows down, engines screaming, on an empty interstate. Yeah we split up after that.

I'm totally against it and will never find them as car enthusiasts in any way, shape, or form. The media or law clumping real enthusiasts together is a complete insult to the real car community. Living in LA, where these are just too common, is just getting more violent each weekend. I can't say I'm an angel since I have street raced ages ago in a wide empty street with no more than 50 people but we all had rules to keep any spectators away if something happens after a start. I get that younger people can't afford track time but they won't be able to afford a lawyer or penalties if caught either. I can rant forever but it's just irritating. Personally I cant find the willpower to support takeovers because I've been a regular to different car meets/shows where everyone walks and talks but suddenly a group of 10-15 cars come in and drift/burnout/launch through the parking lot and hit people/cars.
They're mostly of the younger generation of car enthusiasts and not all of them are bad. From the ones I talked to (just to get an understanding as to why) and they said they do it for the instagram story or snapcat/tictok clip. I dont understand why you wanna do something illegal and post it to your personal account for it to be used as evidence against you. Logic baffles me sometimes. There's a difference between doing something dangerous and doing something dangerous in a controlled environment.
From my opinion they "look and sound" like they're chasing the high of doing something dangerous/illegal and getting away with it, and in doing so they gain popularity within their crowd. Sadly I've been present when critical injuries took place and it shocked me so hard that I barely even attend any car shows anymore. For my safety and sanity.

I've met a couple people who instant associate car enthusiasts with takeovers and it's so frustrating to explain to them that most enthusiasts (I've met) really aren't into the whole takeover scene. Gives decent people a bad rep. Also if you wanna turn donuts in front of a crowd go find a parking lot or industrial park. Don't do it near people's homes or on roads they need to get to work or to run errands. It's still going to be frowned upon but you can at least say you put 2 seconds into considering other people's safety and sanity. I couldn't imagine how livid I'd be if I was running late for work and some clowns had an intersection shut down, I don't care how sick their donuts or cars are.

For me, the difference between street racing and takeovers is the boundaries set.
Generally, street racers set boundaries and rules with the safety and respect of regular drivers in mind. Take Touge for instance, most of the time in the U.S. most people will stay in the right lane at all times, unless they have people that can watch for traffic. For takeovers, the said safety and respect is completely disregarded. They quite literally block off intersections, or in some cases entire INTERSTATES, with the intention to do blatantly dangerous and risky things, for no other reason than to, "burn rubber".
I am completely against takeovers, and always will be. It's making a community that already has gone under tremendous scrutiny look even worse.

    Why comparing this?
Because in this topic, this wild, savage country is more civilised than usa. Sorry heh
it may be too simplificated explanation, but imo unlimited access to internet in everyones pocket is main and only reason. Maybe not the takeovers overall (you can manage takeover while sitting with guys in cafe) but its reason why it happenes so often. Also theres aspect of "crowd courage". The more people theres more chance to escape without consequences

I agree with just about everything you said. The part about sideshow people are not car enthusiasts - I believe most of those people take pride in their rides at minimum. They are there to show it off and say “my V8 Charger can swang better than your V6 Charger” etc. but again, that’s not everyone.
Apart from that, 100% agree. Sideshows or “takeovers” are just getting worse. The ATL area has seen its effect within the past year and it’s slowly beginning to stem out from these popular cities to other rural areas. Should have stopped a long time ago, but here we are.

An Australian here that is also late to the party. When i see video's of 'Takeovers' it just looks bad, to me it just screams 'no respect' to anyone or anything. Here in Australia we do have our street burnouts (which have way more talent then takeovers) but its always done away from the general public like in an industrial park, car park or on back roads out of respect because our burnouts take up the whole width of the street, and you don't want to involve the general public.
I ain't even a burnout guy and i know the etiquette, prefer the thrill of gripping a road to the car's maximum potential when spirited driving. But those takeovers just look bad in the enthusiast community and have no respect for no one.

If it were to happen though, i think the car community would take action to stop it because of the attention it would bring and how strict the police are as it is. To add to my other comment, takeovers near my college campus pretty much put an end to our schools car club. The campus pd would no longer allow any sort of gathering of vehicles (even just parking together in an empty garage on campus) after local street takeovers became an issue. The club became pretty much completely inactive due to the inability to gather. This hurt the younger automotive audience since it was a responsible way to enjoy cars and meet others with the passion

I went to a "Parking Lot Meet" back in 2018. Went all the way down to Chicago for it. At first it was fine. Then all of the sudden, they made a burnout lane, and the organizer of the event was trying so hard to shut that down. About 15 minutes later, cops came from every direction on this parking lot and it legit felt like the scene from the beginning of 2 Fast 2 Furious after Monica Fuentes goes "It's time to get out of here". People just scattering to their cars to get away. I just stood there knowing the cops were just going to take after them. We were able to leave just fine. Now while it was cool, there were way too many people being disrespectful to the people just trying to shop at the Walmart where the event was taking place, and I don't condone that. Haven't gone back since because as seen on social media, its a fucking mess.

the thing most people fail to mention is there’s 2 types of takeovers/sideshows there’s 1. the idiotic meets and 2. the safer takeovers
    1. -fire gets involved
-no respect for innocent pedestrians or bypassers
    -guns
    -fireworks
    -violence
    2.-no fires
-let innocent by passers go home and stop the show to not hurt an innocent pedestrian
-usually ask for permission to shoot a video or “movie”
-usually taken place in empty areas
and yes i support street takeovers and street racing, it just depends if you go with Type 1 or Type 2. if you’re there to have fun and not hurt anyone then yes i support that. But if you go just to have fun and not worry about the safety of others especially innocent pedestrians then no i dont support that

Takeovers completely ruined the car scene in Central florida for me. Street racing and takeovers are so different. The takeovers seem to have started as a way for people without the nicest or fastest car to get a lot of attention. It doesn’t matter what you have, if you are doing donuts in a crowd and causing mayhem on crowded public streets, people are gonna look.
Street racing was a thing, but it was with scouts, two cars and on empty middle of nowhere and generally didn’t draw much attention because they weren’t harming anything or anyone. Takeovers caused any automotive activity to be viewed as destructive.

Takeover culture and sideshows are hands down the worst thing to be associated with car culture and car enthusiasts. Just in my local area in the middle of Washington, small town, has had tons of issues with local gov because of them. It has caused legitimate car meets and events to be canceled or halted by local businesses because of the association. A bunch of bad eggs spoiling the nest for all of us.

I stopped going to takeovers when it ended me up in jail one night actually. i personally been to take overs before in san jose and down in LA it use to be fun asf doing donuts in empty or abandon buildings. gave us all like need for speed or even the first fast and furious vibes but when it got hot into the public eye in 2015 2016ish probably when i stopped going to them due to undercover cops got into the groups or even group creaters making fake addresses to impound cars. i remember watching two cars smashed into eachother back in the day and they would just dab it up and be like "we knew what could of happen." Now, theres no accountability or chill anymore if you look at someone the wrong way or let alone hit a car the other driver or even the fucking crowd itself would smash the other car to bits. guns being drawn too fucking much and for some reason even illegal fireworks is a thing now? its just too much now so many little kids now being run over or being in the drifting car not holding on properly and being flown out the car and no one helps out or even stops the car from running them over just sad.

Anyone out here in the CA bay area knows the sideshows are a big deal. The deeper into east bay you go the more hectic the shows get, over on the peninsula or by SJ is very tame compared to what goes down in Oakland. Hundreds of people gathered around an intersection with the lights from fireworks popping off and lasers flashing around the pit, and the ringing of occasional gunfire. Is it dangerous? Absolutely. But you feel something when those straight piped V8s roar inches away from you. Your opinion of “takeovers” is not valid until you’ve been in the 510.

Two things, 1) everyone not in the car community thinks because I am driving a modified 92 civic sedan that I and take overs/sideshows are both the same people. Go me at every light, and harass me by swapping front wheels, even with my little kids in the car. Its my daily, and seems ironic no? 2) I live in Battle Ground now but grew up in pdx, and the side show take over group(s) near a certain famous place because of how many deaths occurred in a short period when the side show crowd joined ranks with takeovers and tried their hands at street racing.
Now I know they who race have suffered losses in the US and abroad, I cant condone or deny anything in my past that is public record. I just set an example by not doing it even if I happen up on a little get down, I park and talk to anyone who will listen about boundaries, rules(or guidelines), to help negate anyone else dying for fun. I treat it, street racing, like teenage pregnancy should have, its gunna go down my friends, arm them with knowledge and hope they listen, all 5 of mine do, first two graduated high school which I didnt. I said that to say this, leave it better then you found it, or lose it forever. I understand the rush please believe, and occasional jaunts on the freeways can get a bit saucy, but I will brake and stop it before I let my ego end my or anyones life. EOS. If they were in the community we could make some effort to police their behaviors internally but, as you've noted, they're really not in the car community. They're just drawing a disproportionate amount of heat to our community. I don't know that there's much we can do directly to stop their behavior but there's probably some positive things we can do to bring a different kind of attention to our own community. Toy runs? Car meet + bake sale? I'm being a bit facetious but the principle stands.

Alex, I am speaking as a Toronto car design student, car enthusiast, and wanna be drifter. I can speak for many young people when I say; take overs can be the only outlet to get into the scene when you are broke, or new. Take overs consist of all breads, but lead to smaller groups of private meets local to areas. Tracks are 1-2 hour drives, and often don’t allow young drivers who want to race, or drift. Especially around ontario. Personally I don’t attend take overs, because I have met people out of those scenes who showed me how to get into drift events on track. That being said; it is hard to afford events, and still somthing I am rarely able to attend, being a car design student in school.

I appreciate the transparency on your comment man. Is there not like auto cross or anything like that around either? It may be worth looking into and if not, there’s a huge opportunity to start your own regional sports car club where you can get help from people like the SCCA on hosting sanctioned auto cross events. Not having an outlet though can be super difficulty so I definitely get that feeling as well.
Thanks for the comment as always and if you’re subbed, I truly TRULY appreciate it!

@@AlexMartini. there are open lapping and private drifting events; at Toronto motorsports park, shannon ville, and grand bend. But these events occur rarely, and competitions are thin. When events are held; spots are limited. 60 spots is usually the max for drivers, meaning many people cannot attend. Cars are often required to be built, or at least manual; blocking out many young drivers who like to drift, or race, but would not be let on track. The issue is takeovers have 10,000 plus people following their social media pages, and thousands of people who want to attend/do. They are free. Any car can go. The numbers of people attending these events in toronto can be in the thousands, on any givin weekend, and trust me, the only people who go; are motorheads. People who don't like cars, or motorsports; do not risk attending, or simply don't wanna be out at 3AM on a random street. Its young people that are very motivated and driven. People try very hard with what they have, to enjoy motor sports, no matter where that be. Another issue is; the smaller private street events are where people build their skills, experience, and confidence to know if A; they wanna spend the money to go on track and B; not get caught by the police. Large events can be tempting because the odds of getting in trouble with the law; are vastly lower than if the police roll up on 6 cars taking turns drifting a road (a private event). Even when "proper street racing" or "proper street drifting" occurs; it is not something filmed or publicized; because that would ruin it for everyone involved. People do try to put together groups, and smaller scenes of drift events, but they are limited in track selection, and time for events. Sponsors are limited because they focus more on stock car racing in ontario. Even the short track ovals; would rather not have drifting take place. Leaving very few events for young people to host, or go to legally. I do see an opportunity for motorsports to excel in Ontario because of the thousands of young people who love it, but a lot of money needs to be invested into the sport; that just isn't being invested, rather negative attention is being brought to the fact that; young people are into cars. Thanks for the reply Alex. Been a subscriber to FI for years, and I am digging the new channel you've started. Congrats on the success!

I personally think street takeovers are more dangerous than other “hoonigan” activities like street or touge racing, Because you are putting others who don’t want anything to do with the activity in much more danger. Touge racing is secluded on a back road most people don’t take especially at 12am or later, people who are in the touge scene in my opinion have much more respect for those around them and aren’t trying to harm anyone or put anyone in danger but themselves.
