I was a correctional officer and ert member at a Winnipeg jail for 13 yrs. I have to say this is a law enforcement issue system wide. When I made a complaint about inappropriate use of force, which was witnessed by upper management and several officers, I was told to take the high road and the issue was never investigated. After this, I was alienated by the majority of my coworkers and my workplace became unbearable. This was one of hundreds of incidents I witnessed where inappropriate use of force was employed. At what point do the ones in uniform become the criminals? There’s such a code in corrections to justify these kind of acts. The investigating powers never once found officers liable for their actions. I saw things that disgusted me, so much so that I left my job. I felt like I was white knuckling my way through every shift. I don’t know to what end this will ever resolve itself, but the system is screaming for an overhaul.
100% agree. Anyone who sees a police interaction should immediately start livestreaming it. Perhaps the cop can grab the phone, but if there are multiple livestreams he can't stop it. The public needs to start shining a light on all the dirty cops. Expose them all over the internet, make every video of every bad cop go viral and protest in the street until the police chief fires that bad cop.

A couple of quotes stand out: "...In the U.S. they don't have very good accountability systems..." Boy, is that ever an understatement. But, why not? What can we do in the U.S. to fix this problem? An officer who arrested me wrote false statements in the police report and stole two pieces of my jewelry. I filled a complaint with internal affairs. The next time I was arrested the arresting officer no longer removed your jewelry and all jewelry is removed now on intake.
I love it when they say, "We have conducted a thorough investigation into ourselves and we have found ourselves not guilty." Or they say, "We have hired an outside, highly respected firm to conduct an internal audit of our systems." Then you look at it a bit deeper and find the outside firm is a group of retired police officers.

I liked the interview with the brother who was on point and concise in evaluating his brother and how the system is failing. When he said the police chief should stand up and take charge, what he's missing is the politics in play within the dept's. Usually to get to the position of chief they become the best politician with police skills.. In my opinion judging by the photo of Nathan Parker buffed out from training, there could have a been an underlying substance abuse issue i.e. steroids. The fault of the shooting lands squarely on the leadership within the dept however. Charges should have been layed on those that did nothing to remove Nathan Parker sooner and negligently allowed this to happen.
This way going forward leaders Will take decisions about their officers underneath them more carefully knowing that they could be prosecuted for their crimes. a way to send waves of change throughout the world.
I sold Mr.Plato (man that was grabbed by ears/head) a phone a few years ago. He was an extremely nice person. At the end of the probably spending close to an hour with him, the subject of police came up. The way he told the story you could tell (7 years after it had happened) how it affected him.
That's Post Tramatic Stress you're describing especially if it was 7 years since the event. He obviously feared for his life at the time. It may be part or the whole reason why he did not ultimately pursue charges against such an obviously psychopathic Cop.
I investigated my self one time and found the charges where erroneous, irrelevant , inconclusive, and fabricated, there was no wrong doing on my part for stealing that car.

All law enforcement should be required to carry liability insurance like doctors and Healthcare professionals. When civil lawsuits settlements are paid out it's not the taxpayers responsibility but insurance companies. Police officers with histories of disciplinary action and civil suits will result in high insurance premiums and eventually will be priced out of policing.
I agree, if found to be in the wrong any compensation should be take from the police officer themselves, and they should be forced to pay back any costs ie court and solicitors
I experienced police assaults twice in the 70s. Once as a teenager and once as a young man at about 19 years old. Some police have always misbehaved. The problem has always been accountability. Nothing has changed in Fifty years. I don't expect change will happen in the next Fifty years.

Nathan Parker is still a police officer in 2022. He just punched in a drivers side window in another road rage incident in 2022. His charges for the 2018 shooting were stayed. I do not understand why that police department keeps this horrible cop!!
Many of these civil cases against officers are kept secret by the victims being forced to sign non discloser documents. Perhaps we need all these cases being public knowledge for better accountability.
One of the elements that wasn't covered in this story is those violent, raging control freaks are often the most cruel to their own family. I've met good police who go home and are good family members however I've experienced the dark side of the badge. The spouses and children are often their most abused victims. And who can they run to for help? Where can they go to hide?

Your absolutely right. When I retired from the army almost all the people I then hung out with were law enforcement. One of them was an alcoholic and very violent with his wife and 2 kids. He used to brag about all the complaints and lawsuits against him that he had beaten.

Many people in the Niagara region will recognize the man in the police video being interviewed, Mr. Plato. He is a stand up man, hard working, gentle nature, family man. I never knew this had occurred and am sorry he had to go through this. Knowing Mr. Plato, it is unfortunate the police tried to shift the blame to him.

As a former Peace Officer I've seen my fair share of cops who use excessive force, drink and drive and lies in Cort. The problem is that if you say something you are made an example and place a bullseye on your back by experiencing harrassment treats bullying intimidation tactics lack of opportunities and at the end quitting your job due to all of the above. That's why now I keep my cell phone ready and will record every encounter I see a member of the public vs cops.
The disciplinary action (or lack of) the Niagara Police Force took against Parker reveals the level of corruption of senior management, as well as their utter failure to protect citizens and fellow officers. It's all a facade when they claim they are doing an internal investigation.

Yeah, the name drop at the end was definitely something I applaud. While you can't get all the information of an open case, the people who won't speak to you is very telling. The SIU seems to be merely cosmetic, and the people overseeing the hearings are complicit in any further crimes committed by an officer, if they didn't take the badge and gun from when they had plenty of opportunity. The fact they're still attempting to say that it wasn't his fault when a brother officer put a full ten pieces of lead through him, shows just how terrified that officer was of Nathan Parker, but also reveals an almost childish attempt to play devils advocate. It was common knowledge that once his anger was up, someone was getting a beating. I'm just glad it was a straight up cop with a clean record. Had it been someone else they'd probably be in the can instead of Nathan.
I was so surprised when I heard that women's comment in the beginning of the program. I always thought people leave the big cities and move to smaller areas so they could know who the neighbors/townsfolk are in order to have a closer knit community. A place where everyone knows and looks out for each other. She made it sound as if everyone was trying to hide from their criminal backgrounds and didn't want to be seen or heard by anyone. 🤫

My sister suffers from mental illness. A cop once showed up at my mother's apartment after my sister had a mental episode. My mother wanted her to be taken to CAMH because my mother was not able to take her herself. Police showed up and one officer in particular was rude and aggressive towards her. Upon arriving to the hospital the officer began getting physical towards my sister. He thrashed her around. My mother asked him to stop and get help from somone else in order to restrain her. The officer threatened to charge my sister and said he would arrest my mother for interfering. Nurses were near by but turned a blind eye after he took them aside and sweet talked them in private. It was truly unprofessional.
I recall a number of mental health checks resulting in death from this past summer. They were as prominent in the news due to the BLM protests. They clearly aren't trained to deal with someone in a mental health crisis. Even worse if someone like this officer having a discipline problem shows up to their door.
The mentally ill are targeted by police and face discrimination, but it seems mostly only Black Lives Matter. Rather than forming protest groups, people with a mental illness hide. There are news stories about mentally ill cops who are terrified to reveal their illness to police forces.
Why are entertainers, musicians and actors in Canada not held to the same standards. They are not even accountable to the RCMP. When I was a minor, a MAJOR CANADIAN ROCKSTAR grabbed me TWICE ON DIFFERENT OCCASIONS AND KISSED ME ON THE NECK FROM BEHIND. I he pushed me hard enough, and I fell hurting my knee. In a Winnipeg Hotel bar, there are many witnesses. But to this day, he made no restitution to me. It's unfair.

My wife and I overheard juveniles at the next table speaking about joining the police student training program. I listened to how they were going to have police protections doing "anything we want". I am sure they were not the first and not the last. Street cop violence has no end but it does seem to have beginnings.

Sue the union. Go after their collective pension. If they don’t feel comfortable with being each other’s insurance policy, then the person shouldn’t be on the force. It should also be an union’s scope to ensure police departments train their officers properly, as a service to the members to receive good working conditions. If not done, the union should be held accountable too.

I was a correctional officer and ert member at a Winnipeg jail for 13 yrs. I have to say this is a law enforcement issue system wide. When I made a complaint about inappropriate use of force, which was witnessed by upper management and several officers, I was told to take the high road and the issue was never investigated. After this, I was alienated by the majority of my coworkers and my workplace became unbearable. This was one of hundreds of incidents I witnessed where inappropriate use of force was employed. At what point do the ones in uniform become the criminals? There’s such a code in corrections to justify these kind of acts. The investigating powers never once found officers liable for their actions. I saw things that disgusted me, so much so that I left my job. I felt like I was white knuckling my way through every shift. I don’t know to what end this will ever resolve itself, but the system is screaming for an overhaul.
Body camera's must be worn by all officers while on duty. Always film all your interactions with police. Be the media. Film the police.

I liked the interview with the brother who was on point and concise in evaluating his brother and how the system is failing. When he said the police chief should stand up and take charge, what he's missing is the politics in play within the dept's. Usually to get to the position of chief they become the best politician with police skills..
In my opinion judging by the photo of Nathan Parker buffed out from training, there could have a been an underlying substance abuse issue i.e. steroids.
The fault of the shooting lands squarely on the leadership within the dept however. Charges should have been layed on those that did nothing to remove Nathan Parker sooner and negligently allowed this to happen.

I sold Mr.Plato (man that was grabbed by ears/head) a phone a few years ago. He was an extremely nice person. At the end of the probably spending close to an hour with him, the subject of police came up. The way he told the story you could tell (7 years after it had happened) how it affected him.

All law enforcement should be required to carry liability insurance like doctors and Healthcare professionals. When civil lawsuits settlements are paid out it's not the taxpayers responsibility but insurance companies. I experienced police assaults twice in the 70s. Once as a teenager and once as a young man at about 19 years old. Some police have always misbehaved. The problem has always been accountability. Nothing has changed in Fifty years. I don't expect change will happen in the next Fifty years.

One of the elements that wasn't covered in this story is those violent, raging control freaks are often the most cruel to their own family. I've met good police who go home and are good family members however I've experienced the dark side of the badge. The spouses and children are often their most abused victims. Many people in the Niagara region will recognize the man in the police video being interviewed, Mr. Plato. He is a stand up man, hard working, gentle nature, family man. I never knew this had occurred and am sorry he had to go through this. Knowing Mr. Plato, it is unfortunate the police tried to shift the blame to him.

As a former Peace Officer I've seen my fair share of cops who use excessive force, drink and drive and lies in Cort. The problem is that if you say something you are made an example and place a bullseye on your back by experiencing harrassment treats bullying intimidation tactics lack of opportunities and at the end quitting your job due to all of the above. That's why now I keep my cell phone ready and will record every encounter I see a member of the public vs cops.

Yeah, the name drop at the end was definitely something I applaud. While you can't get all the information of an open case, the people who won't speak to you is very telling.
The SIU seems to be merely cosmetic, and the people overseeing the hearings are complicit in any further crimes committed by an officer, if they didn't take the badge and gun from when they had plenty of opportunity. The fact they're still attempting to say that it wasn't his fault when a brother officer put a full ten pieces of lead through him, shows just how terrified that officer was of Nathan Parker, but also reveals an almost childish attempt to play devils advocate. It was common knowledge that once his anger was up, someone was getting a beating. I'm just glad it was a straight up cop with a clean record. Had it been someone else they'd probably be in the can instead of Nathan.

I love how actual charges (assault?) on top of "disciplinary action" against these officers never even seems to be a consideration? Yet, citizens are charged in the blink of an eye, sometimes with real life damaging implications for "questionable" offenses. Really makes my blood boil.

The brother seems like the sweetest man ever. I feel so sad for him to have a monster for a big brother. Family is supposed to support and protect eachother. I know from experience how heartbreaking it is when (Family) the people God literally put on this planet to guide & love us, instead harm and brutalize us. It breaks one's soul and jades our view of the world. I can see this sorrow in the brother's eyes, he's scared & fed-up and rightfully so. My sister suffers from mental illness. A cop once showed up at my mother's apartment after my sister had a mental episode. My mother wanted her to be taken to CAMH because my mother was not able to take her herself. Police showed up and one officer in particular was rude and aggressive towards her. Upon arriving to the hospital the officer began getting physical towards my sister. He thrashed her around. My mother asked him to stop and get help from somone else in order to restrain her. The officer threatened to charge my sister and said he would arrest my mother for interfering. Nurses were near by but turned a blind eye after he took them aside and sweet talked them in private. It was truly unprofessional.
I recall a number of mental health checks resulting in death from this past summer. They were as prominent in the news due to the BLM protests.
They clearly aren't trained to deal with someone in a mental health crisis. Even worse if someone like this officer having a discipline problem shows up to their door.
These are just pigs being pigs.

The mentally ill are targeted by police and face discrimination, but it seems mostly only Black Lives Matter. Rather than forming protest groups, people with a mental illness hide. There are news stories about mentally ill cops who are terrified to reveal their illness to police forces.

Why are entertainers, musicians and actors in Canada not held to the same standards. They are not even accountable to the RCMP. When I was a minor, a MAJOR CANADIAN ROCKSTAR grabbed me TWICE ON DIFFERENT OCCASIONS AND KISSED ME ON THE NECK FROM BEHIND. I he pushed me hard enough, and I fell hurting my knee. In a Winnipeg Hotel bar, there are many witnesses. But to this day, he made no restitution to me. It's unfair.

Those are pretty soft penalties for such a bad behavior. It's kinda like saying, we have to do something, but we really don't want to, we'll make it look like we're punishing. The public will eat that up.
The public doesn't eat it up! They can't stand it! But... the public CAN'T do anything about it either, can they? It's just for show, that's it. Nothing more nothing less. If it were left up to the police union, they'd probably get even less harsher punishments. But they have to do something to appease the public, so they give them a slap and that's it... it's just enough to keep the public from losing it and rioting. That's about the only thing that could happen that MIGHT ACTUALLY affect some kind of change.. it's sad really

My wife and I overheard juveniles at the next table speaking about joining the police student training program. I listened to how they were going to have police protections doing "anything we want". I am sure they were not the first and not the last. Street cop violence has no end but it does seem to have beginnings.

It should also be an union’s scope to ensure police departments train their officers properly, as a service to the members to receive good working conditions. If not done, the union should be held accountable too.
