Holtzy_Vref - i have a BD-5 and also wondered why it’s not on the list. Anyone can call up BD-Micro Technologies and order a BD-5J jet from them today. They have made many upgrades beyond the original. Their number is 541.444.1343.

Back in the spring of 1996, a workmate and I attended the EAA's Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, Florida. He had put down a deposit on a homebuilt "paper airplane" - a concept design, that was taking a long time to get to realization. The designers had their non-flying prototype with them. Right then and there, my friend began arranging for a refund. Seems the performance numbers had begun to slide, and the price was going up. My bud eventually got back most - not all - of his money. His experience was a gift to me.
BTW, my bud subsequently built an RV-6, and then a -10.
All of these designs in this video are unquestionably cool, even exciting. But anyone with CAD savvy can draw a cool and exciting airplane and slap specs and performance numbers on it. Sure, the designer needs dollars to develop their concept into an actual flying machine, but I'd be very careful about taking the bait just because someone throws 200kts against the wall to see how many people jumps at it. Plus, I'm not a test pilot. I wouldn't own/test fly any of the first ten, or even twenty runs of a new design.

SUBSONEX has been flying for years. Paul Dye, NASA's longest serving director of flight, built and flies one. He has the NASA flight director's insignia painted on his that only serving and former NASA flight directors can use. Pretty strong endorsement of a flight package if a dude of his pedigree owns and operates one. See it here. th-cam.com/video/IejjPFgvcB4/w-d-xo.html

I don't see why he put any money in an airplane that was in development. If the kit airplane has at least a flying prototype and was certified I'd say it's worth doing research on it but not before.

We've had two stall spin crashes of VL3s here in Europe and it has gotten a bad reputation for that but I figure it's like the Lancairs it's inspired by, not meant for low speed. Both cases the parachutes weren't deployed... they claim 380km/h max cruise, which is not bad and here in Europe I can get it under a sport license. Although we aren't allowed to fly above 9500. But presumably still decent speed.

I am surprised Mike. You mention Dark Aero, an airplane that is still in the design phase. To be flight tested very soon, Raptor Aircraft will be cruising at 267 miles per hour while burning only 7 gallons of diesel or jet A fuel per hour. It's a large, 5 person, pressurized airplane with a range of about 4500 miles. If you add to that that it will be built in 3 weeks with a price tag of only $130 000 ready to fly (with an extensive Garmin avionics suite included), it beats every airplane you mention in this video by a long mile.
