      Ironically, most modern car V12 engines are way to small to be a 70% merlin... It would need to be 9.3L. But if we ignore that and just look at the horse power, that is about 440hp or there abouts. Well inside range of most V12 avalible today.
      If you had a true 70% scale merlin it would be 255kg, that would be to heavy for this airframe.

      there would be a huge market for that... seriously ! imagine a B17 of a smaller scale or even full scale... built using modern methods... just upgrade the proven most desirable stuff... talking flat screens and analog for back up... sound absorbtion honey comb skin... such a thing could even be somewhat stealthy as the radar beams would get trapped inside the skin and bounce around ... never at all beaming back to the collection array... so much you could do... and u could do it so much cheaper... even the engines and all of its components could be upgraded in a big way... Dennis lets pray someone with deep pockets gets the same idea or maybe one of us will win a lottery or something lol.

    • @oldschoolmotorsickle
      @oldschoolmotorsickle 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure that 450 hp would be desirable in this airframe. Unless you’re looking at a turboprop, any piston engine of 450 hp is going to add an unmanageable amount of weight.
      I’m a horsepower fiend, but I believe the designer has landed on the sweet spot of power to weight.

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Strap a Merlin on the front of this thing and you still won't be able to exceed 216kts. The extra power isn't worth much of anything without an increased Vne

    • @RitzRT
      @RitzRT 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Skinflaps_Meatslapper Interesting that it would be limited in this way. Why build something that LOOKS like a P-51, but does not perform more like a "hot rod"? It's like those lambo kit cars based on a Pontiac Fiero or Volkswagen beetle running gear. Sure, it LOOKS like a lambo, but it still performs like a relatively slow economy car. Not complaining, but curious. The Rotax 915is can be configured with up to 300hp.

    • @waveman2952
      @waveman2952 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope, strap a modified Kawasaki Jet Ski supercharged 310 hp motor on there. Another guy in the Experimental world has one with 410 hp for STOL competition planes. They are extremely tough powerplants! All forged steel and can handle up to 1200hp in race configuration!

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RitzRT Giving this plane more power would be very similar to retrofitting a 400HP turbo hayabusa engine in a moped that experiences an unavoidable high speed wobble at 65mph. Sure, you'd get up to speed quick...real quick...probably doing a wheelie the entire time...but you won't be busting through that 65mph mark unless you just feel like dying. The reason why they made this plane with an inherent speed limit is because they had no interest in making it based on performance. It started off as a scale RC plane meant to look like a mustang, and they simply scaled it up to fit people. The whole thing is based on appearances alone, and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they called it a success after finding out it could only fly 100mph. Scale warbird enthusiasts have this mindset that they need to fly slow to look more scale, and they're real particular about copying panel lines and rivets...apparently that mindset is pretty hard to shake off when designing real airplanes.

With the constellation of single-engine WW2 fighters out there it'd sure be nice to see a 70% F4U, P-47, FW-190, A6M, Yak-3 or a Fiat G-55, and yes radial engines are an option.

    Dears, the current Vne is based, with some margin, on the actual Vh with the Rotax. (Vh is the maximum horizontal speed)
    Of course with a larger engine, the aircraft can technically do higher Vne (upon testing and confirmation).
    Due to the use of carbon fiber push rods in the control surfaces and the entire carbon fiber structure design with huge static load reserves, and incredible stiffness, the aircraft can see higher speeds at all and is principally already designed for it ;)

    "70% scale"
    I politely request full-scale carbon fiber versions of warbirds with turboshaft engine swaps. And also, don't worry about the fake rivets, that will just drive up the price.

    The quest for a personal, affordable scale Mustang has been ongoing for a long time. Finally it took German engineering to make it a reality, apparently! I like it!

    To the scale question its would probably be a half scale 1/2, or even one third 1/3, and yeah could even be a quarter scale 1/4, or one fifth 1/5... ect. Too cool though thanks for the video!

    Amazing. However, what is the planning involved with flying one of these. I imagine you would have to submit a flight plan and notify the local airspace every time you fly one of these. They are large enough to have a radar signature and large enough to cause serious damage if they crash.

    Does Scale Wings make a P-47 Thunderbolt Republic? If not, I wish they did. That is my favorite WW2 aircraft. I think a 9 cylinder Verner rotory engine with a super charger would work well in the P-47. Don't get me wrong, but I love the P-51 Mustang as well. Building a kit in 1,500 hrs is fast! That's like 4-6 months time.

    The real P-51 had laminar flow wings that helped it with top speed and fuel efficiency. But that also made it easy to depart controlled flight during a low speed maneuver. Does this design have that issue?

    Are these type of planes designed with belly landings in mind? like what if the electric landing gear doesn't open do you get shredded from the bottom up?
