    You have definitely helped eased my jitters about getting ready to walk on. I spent a year at a good d3 school and had to get my grades right in the fall. Ill be transferring in the spring. Emu, maryland, umass, Tennessee, marshall are my options. Big schools but I know I have the size skill and ability to compete against the starters. Just trying to prepare and you are definitely putting out info other people arnt. Thank you

    There's always this other incredible college sport called Rugby. Especially if you're at a big D1 school, I can almost guarantee you that they have a Rugby team. We have a major league Rugby Union now. We have a National team that plays in the World Cup. We have a 7s team that plays in the Olympics. If you're a good football player that could walk-on, you could be, with some learning and work, a great rugby player.

    I'm a Junior in high school who hopes to play for Ohio State. I'm currently in the process of transforming my body into more of a linebacker type as that's what I'd go in as. I used to be awesome, but I haven't been good in a while & I'm really slow. I've lost 37 lbs in a couple months & am working on gaining tons more muscle. I want to shine as much as possible my senior year of high school. I haven't even started in a football game in years, so my aspirations are really high. I'll most likely have to go in as a normal walkon. If not then I may have to go to another school, perform well there & either transfer or stay there if I feel it's best to. I feel like if I end up even being on their roster one day it would be the most unlikely thing to happen, yet I know I can do it. I appreciate this video, & go Bucks! ⭕🏈

    I need my son to watch this... he has been recruited by a three D3 schools and I would prefer he play at that level (I want to him to make sure he gets his degree). He wants to try out at a D1 school but I think his size may be a factor (mostly his height) and probably why he did not get any looks from D1 schools.

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tell him to check out the channel! might help out. If what he truly wants to do is play D1 he should try and go the walk on route at his dream school. That way he's at least at his favorite school to get a degree if it doesn't work out with football. On the flip side if all he cares about is football and getting playing time, then maybe a D3 school isn't a bad call. Just encourage him to go after his biggest possible dreams and goals and support him whichever direction he takes it. Only get one shot at life

    there are a ton of schools where you can go and actually PLAY and get ON THE FIELD and not have been a superstar D1 type of kid in high school... if u are not RECRUITED u most likely wont be playing much... who wants to do all that work and never get to make plays in college??? whats the shame in finding a smaller school where you actually fit??? there are a lot of dudes that are ON THE TEAM but arent actually playing... u got a lot of guys tryna get on rosters to just get gear... take the trips... be around the program... man screw that... i would rather find a D2 or NAIA school where i can fit and make a bigger contribution... AND have them PAY for my education... those guys that get that cinderella scholarship in their FIFTH YEAR are few and far between... them dudes leave school with big debt unless moms and pops can pay outta pocket with no problem... if u arent going to the NFL u shud look at how u are gonna be set up when ur playing days are over... debt... degree... making contacts... work opportunities... as a coach i just shake my head at the "do it for the drip" players... • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Totally understand going to a smaller school and aiming to get more playing time or trying to get college paid for! I've spoken about both being great options countless times on my channel so I'm not sure if your questions are directed towards me or are just rhetorical. With that said, I don't know of anyone to make a D1 team and last on it with their reasoning for joining being "doing it for the drip". A lot of players would MUCH rather play for their dream school and have a shot as a walkon and work their way up, then to play ball at a lower division that is not as exciting of program to them (hence why there are tons of walkons at big schools with other lower offers). So it's completely preferential and depends on the athlete and what they are looking to accomplish. Also you can get incredible connections, a great education, academic scholarships, and all of the same opportunities off the field at a big school as you can at a smaller one. The question is really would you rather be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a big pond. Each has their own unique benefits and drawbacks, but one size definitely doesn't fit all in this scenario. Appreciate your opinion though - there's others who feel that way and should pursue that route too!

      @@clayraterman not a shot at you... just an observation... bcuz as a coach i always ask "why" when dudes say they "just wanna go D1" or its "D1 or nothing"... USUALLY the answer is duh... or bcuz i just do... or i just wanna be on a big stage... Then they get there and never play... then they come home mad...
      Some of these guys are alpha type male personalities that just dont have the height weight and speed... So there are definite levels... and the question guys have to be able to answer is "do u wanna be on the team or do u wanna play." Bcuz there is a definite difference... But personally speaking and from tons of my friends experiences, I am way happier I went D1 big school than to a smaller one. Would never change it. However, some people come and transfer out and go smaller for more playing time, it's a totally personal choice. But I wouldn't say it's a big secret that it's hard as shit to play at one of the top schools in the nation. On top of that it that doesn't mean it's not possible to walk on and play either, I've seen lots of people accomplish that with time, skill, and hard work.

    I dont know je it's the same in Canada. I want to play college football for my futur university, but I dont want to wait 2 years of training and only be on the bench. I have a good understanding of football and I want to shine. Do you think you can do a video about the mentality you have To have To succed. Because normally the players won't have your back if you're new and you're a walk on ... thanks for the video tho

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah thats a good topic - I'll dive into that sometime. Part of that mentality is knowing that even if you HAVE to wait and train for 2 or 3 or even 4 years before you play or shine, you're willing to do so. I'm not saying it won't or can't happen earlier, but the right mindset is being okay working your absolute hardest knowing it may NEVER even happen, that's how you succeed.

I don’t have many films since it’s my first year and I’m considering walk-on. is it still possible to play in college with little football experience?

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes it's possible. At a tryout they most likely will just briefly ask you if you played football in high school, they're looking for athletes and how you perform at the tryout in relation to your times on drills etc. Make sure to watch the full video, I talk about these things!

  • @jedibuck1192
    @jedibuck1192 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey I have a question. Haven’t watched the video yet but saved this one and some others to watch later. A little background before my question. I first played football my freshman year on the defensive line. Didn’t really know much of anything about football before. Then after this year I didn’t play football til my senior year because of personal reasons. Lost a lot of weight though and was about 6’1 almost 6’2 and about 170lbs. Liked football a lot more this year but the personal problem came up a bit towards the end but started to fall in love with the sport anyways. I never thought I would want to play in college and I know that I wasn’t very good when I did play this year, was very physical and when I knew what I was doing could hold my own, but because I don’t really know that much about football, offensive and defensive wise besides some of the stuff I picked up playing LB, I never thought I’d get anywhere. I’m 191lbs now mostly muscle still got a little pouch on my belly but have gotten a lot stronger since this quarantine started. Started about 175lbs. And am now trying to get physically stronger for tryouts. So I guess now my question is, would someone like me who has very little experience, and doesn’t know that much about the game of football be good enough to walk on at a junior college level? I know that’s not a lot of information to go off of but yeah that’s my question for now. If anyone gets back to me on this thank you
    Oh yeah, I love to be physical and love to hit, am kinda fast I guess but I’m not too sure now, faster than I used to be. But can only bench 225 and can squat 315 only because I had a knee infection from wrestling so I was off my legs for about 3 months. For the positions to try out for I was thinking tight end or linebacker again but leaning towards tight end. Also have a pretty big frame to fill out. And am only 17 at the moment

    • @clayraterman
      @clayraterman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well watch the video!! haha but again i've given this advice a million times, quit analyzing every little aspect and just go take action. No one is ever going to be able to tell you whether or not its worth it, whether or not you'll make it, if you are good enough, or anything else. You need to make decisions in your life and then start taking action to make your goals happen. If you fail then so be it, but at least you won't be living with the regret of not trying the things you wanted to do deep down. Try to minimize regret in your life and if you have a goal then try to accomplish it! The way you can build the confidence in yourself is by actually going and doing the hard work, keeping promises you made to yourself, being self disciplined, instilling good habits, and improving yourself every week. Start small and start with action. Goodluck my man - you got this!

Even if that is the 100% truth no one is going to want to hear that story about shoulda coulda woulda beens, take ownership for why you didn't play, use it as fuel to get better, and take that and go make a team. Take full accountability and re-write the story you are telling yourself. If you want to be a walk on you have to deal with a ton of people not believing in you, that's just a pre-requisite. You don't need any film at all to show up to an open tryout and make the team either, go check out my other videos where I specifically recommend not sending in your film anyway unless they ask.
