Thanks Clay! My walk-on is at The University of Utah February 8th. I’ve been training and have been feeling the nerves, this video helps give me clarity on what I need to be focused on. Real quick though worst case scenario I don’t make the team. Is it worth paying money to train with speed and agility training coach? Or is a lot of that stuff simple stuff you can do on your own?
I did it all on my own watching youtube videos and timing myself on drills. Takes a lot of effort solo! I'm also a big believer in investing in yourself so ultimately it's up to you. I'm sure they would be able to hold you a bit more accountable and help with timing drills and watching your technique better than you could on your own. Good luck my friend!

I also dedicate at least two days of hard cardio and explosive workouts, and do shuttle and 3 cone drills. I am trying to walk on to FAU. I have gotten my bench from 2 reps of 225 to 10

Sometimes people will go in thinking they’re gonna play something and then get put elsewhere which is fine so keep an open mind. Also another huge thing to think about is the 40. I’m telling you at 6’2 and a decent weight, the FIRST thing they wanna know is can this kid run fast. If you can blow them away with a 40 and get some more good weight put on, you’ll be in a great position. Practice your 40 starts and runs a lot, you can definitely improve them by a couple tenths of a second if you go from a bad start to a great start. Goodluck brotha!! Keep killing it in the weight room and get some more weight on, you’ll prob have a good shot in August. BE consistent and write down that goal everyday so u don’t lose focus on it.
clay raterman Thanks man! I chose tight end cause that’s where I started on varsity for my high school team. I’m currently a senior and I am graduating in May. I also played defensive end, starting on both sides of the ball but it was my first year playing the position. I played tight end every year of my high school career and averaged 15 yards a catch on varsity. When it comes to them asking me what position I play i would put multiple down.
Jacob Thomas oh wow you’re young man you got plenty of time. Keep working hard and get ready for those tryouts. You still have lots of time to put weight and muscle on, you’re actually in a very good spot. Let me know how everything goes, keep after it!!

Yeah it will - doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Everything affects your chances. Aim to get bigger and faster, or work on your speed so much that it compensates for your size
I’m a senior coming out of high school, and I’m going to walk on at Norfolk State University, which is a D1 AA college in Virginia. I am a defensive end. I’m 6’2”, 240 lbs, and I run a 4.90 40. I looked at the team’s roster online and I’m around the same size as most of their defensive ends, but I’m kind of nervous because I suck at bench pressing. For some reason I can only bench 225 like 3 or 4 times, which is not super great for someone my position. I’m afraid coaches are gonna see that and be like “alright, see ya!” I don’t want that to happen. Any recommendations?
Nice well then genetics are on your side for the size so that's good! First off strength is something that you can always build and a good coaching program knows that they can develop a good athlete and improve their strength so it shouldn't be the only point of focus. Now being a walk on it's definitely helpful to have EVERY advantage you can. My advice would be not to be scared of the outcome of your first tryout. Being a freshman means your strength SHOULDN'T even be through the roof yet. So be confident, increase it as much as possible in the meantime, and honestly focus more heavily on your strong points. Lower your 40 time by a couple tenths and they will have to take you. Work on improving the things you can control in the immediate timeframe before the tryout and just go at it with confidence!
Thanks man for the information this helps a lot. I am currently going to be a freshman at a D2 school, Mnsu Mankato, they have a really good football team. I am currently 5’10 205, my squat is 375, my bench is 300 and my 40 is a 4.8. I played DE in high school but I’m obviously way to small to play that college. Should I change my position to OLB or to more of a safety type player?
Louis Ikponmwosa no problem man! Just subscribe and try to pass along the info. In my opinion that’s too small for DE in college. With those numbers you’re kinda right in between LB and safety. Not quite fast enough for safety, not quite big enough for LB, but right in middle and sounds like a great foundation. If you can gain weight easily maybe try and bulk to 220 and play OLB or if you can get your 40 time down a little before tryout go for safety. Either way you have a really solid foundation so just pick one position and aim toward it and if they decide they want you somewhere else they can make that choice and switch you later on. Main thing is to do well at the tryout and that 40 time is going to be most important number they see. Focus heavy on that even if you’re bulking, cus if you can just perfect your start you could probably shave off .1-.2 seconds if you’re lucky! Let me know how it all goes, hope it helps✊🏼
What if you haven’t gone full time every semester do you still have time left? And if if you been in school since highschool like I’m 22 now but I’ve always been good at football and just thinking what if I make this a possibility
boochduke13 if you’ve ever enrolled in 12+ credit hours your eligibility clock started. Double check with your school or NCAA rules to make sure, I’m not sure of your exact situation so it could be possible
I finished my two years of Juco ball as a corner and most of us had poor diet because its kind of a struggle. So these tips are very informative but I was recruited by some schools but opted out because of my college major, so I decided to try to walk on to Division 2 school close to home. Of course they didnt respond to my email which included my GPA and film. would you say the walk on process for division 1 is similar to division 2? Not even sure they have tryouts and feel like I gave up a scholarship.
Kekoa Smith I think it was smart that you went somewhere for a specific major that you wanted. Football doesn’t last forever. I would say that the processes are probably very similar. Don’t worry about not getting a response, no one does usually. Just don’t get discouraged because you sent one email. You gotta make shit happen. Go to the athletic facility and ask around if they hold a walk on tryout in August. Go on the athletic staff directory site, find all the people involved with football and email all of them asking as a favor if you could tell them if, when, or who is in charge of the walk ons for that team and when a tryout is. You can also probably ask follow their social media accounts if they have any and DM them and comment on stuff. But worst case go to the facility and wait around until you find coaches or people to talk to. Feels awkward and hard but sometimes you gotta make your own luck if it’s not just readily available. Once you get the right info and know when it is, get training. If they don’t have one, figure out what players are walk ons and ask them on Instagram who they got in contact with and how the recruitment went. Goodluck man! Let me know if you need any other help✊🏼
I Didn’t Play Football In High School And I Want To Walk On To A Small Collage. Could I Or No Because I Didn’t Play In High School? Sorry If It’s A Stupid Question.
You absolutely can! It's just going to be slightly harder because you have no experience. Try to learn the game, figure out if you like it, and really focus on getting better at the drills they will have at the tryout, then once you make the team you can start worrying about all the football stuff.
@@ehactive8506 why you askin me lol that's a question of if you want to do it! I'd say definitely try so you don't have regrets when you're older about never trying - but do you!
You write down what you are trying for, but they will likely put you at whatever they need based on what they think you are and what the team needs (if they want you).
Hey man can I join my high school football team as a sophomore? I never played football before but I have a really good feeling and I have an ambition that I’m gonna be a good player as a cornerback because I’m 5’5 and 164 lbs. Also even if I do make the team, I have zero equipment so where would I get that from.
Speaking from experience they should provide you your basics(helmet pads pants etc) you’ll have to buy your own gloves, mouth piece, and cleats and that’s pretty much it
Yeah absolutely - just because you didn't play as a Freshman doesn't mean you can't join. It does mean people are probably more experienced and have worked harder and longer on the team so you'll have to understand that and work really hard, but definitely go for it! Usually in high school you don't have tryouts and have to "make the team", most of the time they take everyone and then you work hard to hopefully get playing time. Check the reply below for the equipment question, they give you most of it and if not just go to like Dicks Sporting Goods or something to get the rest.
Depends on how your tryout goes and how your times are for all the drills! Sometimes they ask about previous experience and sometimes they don't from everyone I've heard from
Yeah it's usually just an open tryout that you sign up to do. However, if you've never played before and you're not in good shape and not some freak athlete - chances are definitely not looking as good haha
Sometimes they don't post anything about it. First try googling it, then try checking the football teams social media accounts and look near the dates of the first week of fall and winter semesters (just to see if they post it at all), then I would email director of player personnel for the team. If they don't respond, look for a walk on coordinator title, or anyone you think might sound relevant and email them. Every school has an athletic staff directory with tons of contacts and emails so go through and email the most relevant ones. Lastly, if none of that works, look up the roster and find out who is a walk on at that school, DM them, and figure out when they tried out or who let them on the team and is in charge of that. Worst case - go to the athletic facility and wait around to talk to someone in person. Goodluck man hope that helps!
Clay raterman bro I wanna be a walk on at tech and try out but I havent got accepted into the school yet..do I have to be accepted into the school to tryout and be a walk on?
@@user-ye7el2hh5g This is super important. You gotta change the way you perceive it right now - being a walk on is one of the hardest things you can possibly do especially if it's at a high level. It's going and making a name for yourself and making shit happen with no help from anyone. If you carry yourself the right way then you will be extremely respected for your hard work and grit. So first you gotta change your perception of a walk on. Next you gotta not care AT ALL what anyone else thinks anymore. The second you stop caring what others think is when you can finally fully be yourself and go after what you want in life and succeed. Good luck my man!
Hey man if you see this let me know what you suggest. I’m trying to walk on my university’s team but I can’t seem to reach the coaching staff. I’ve emailed three people, and have yet to receive a reply. It’s been about a week.
There's literally not even school going on right now so I would highly doubt they would reply, even then if you're reaching out to the coaching staff no one will reply. Their focus is on the team and the players. Look for a director of player personnel, a walk on coordinator, someone that works in the office who could maybe ask about tryout times. But more often then not you just need to find out when the tryout is and go tryout, usually doesn't help to contact anyone and in some cases I've seen the walk on coordinator be annoyed by people reaching out with unrealistic expectations and unrealistic promises.
I was just wanting to know if you think I would still be eligible for a D1 D2 school . I went to a juco for 2 years and graduated in 2019, however I never played football in college. I’m going to a 4 year school spring 2021 and was considering trying out.
My daily routine was wake up - stretch, review my goals, meditate, eat, then go to work or school, whatever, then workout (strength and conditioning training), then I would go to the field or a grass area after dinner and do shuttles, 40's, L-cone, work on footwork/football related drills. That was on a packed day and I was always eating healthy and pounding the water. This is what I did training wise leading up to my tryout. I only added in the field work a few months before my actual tryout though. Hope that helps!
I signed up with this recruiting program and have been talking to like DIII DII NAIA but I feel I can play D1. Ive got accepted into a D1 school, would it be smart for me to walk on?
That's really up to you. I personally chose going after my dream school and walking on there. Depends on your goals, if you want potential at scholarships and playing time sooner rather than later, it would be wise to go the recruited route. Otherwise, if it's about playing D1 at your dream school, then I think you know the answer.
I played football growing up my entire life and I did strength and conditioning training for around 7 years before I was walking on (all through my younger ages). However, in terms of the actual tryout - I trained for around 6-8 months on the drills and specifically football focused training. I was already in great shape lifting and running wise, but those last 3 or so months before the tryout I added in some intense practice on the drills I knew I would be tested on.
Came out of high school the voted All Region & Most Valuable OL. I wanna play D1 and eventually shoot my shot at NFL. At 5’11” 290 I knew there was only so far I could go playing OL so now I’m tryna walk on as a FB at 6’0 245 This is a good video 👍🏾
Nice! Keep an open mind as to what position you could go as, could be linebacker, FB, D-line, etc. make sure you work on your speed and agility. The size will only look good if you can move fast too. If you’re that big and run a good 40 and shuttle, you’ll be in a great spot so work those a lot. Goodluck homie lemme know how it goes✊🏼
clay raterman I am new to this body weight at 245 and I am doing any and everything I can to learn how to train and develop that back/skill position speed. Just dropping from 330 to now 245 alone dropped my 40 time from 5.7 to a 4.8. I’m still trying to pinpoint each tryout date but I know I have at least 7 months to prepare. I am open to playing any position but I’m hoping to play specifically fullback because I feel like that’s the easiest position to transition to from playing a pulling guard, blocking on offense but we’ll see 🤷🏾♂️
THE ILLEST ENT that’s great! Yeah just keep workin and get the info on those try out dates and go out and impress them with size, speed, or hopefully both and you’ll get a look. If not, ask what you need to improve on and come back to the next tryout. Just keep focused on that vision and be consistent working toward it each day and you have as good a shot as any!
Thanks Clay! My walk-on is at The University of Utah February 8th. I’ve been training and have been feeling the nerves, this video helps give me clarity on what I need to be focused on.

Double check with your school or NCAA rules to make sure, I’m not sure of your exact situation so it could be possible
clay raterman okay thanks man!
So can I train for a year after graduating then walk on?
Yes you can!
SO IF YOURE TRYINGTO TRYOUT BUT ON YOUR ELIGIBILITY YOU ARE GOING TO BE A ACADEMIC REDSHIRT DO YOU STILL TRYOUT
YES
So you already have to be enrolled in the school?
Yep
Film?
I Didn’t Play Football In High School And I Want To Walk On To A Small Collage. Could I Or No Because I Didn’t Play In High School? Sorry If It’s A Stupid Question.
You absolutely can! It's just going to be slightly harder because you have no experience. Try to learn the game, figure out if you like it, and really focus on getting better at the drills they will have at the tryout, then once you make the team you can start worrying about all the football stuff.
clay raterman well I’m in my junior year already missed tryouts should I tryout for senior year?
@@ehactive8506 why you askin me lol that's a question of if you want to do it! I'd say definitely try so you don't have regrets when you're older about never trying - but do you!
It says for D1 you have a year since the graduation year before you enroll?
you can be 50 years old and enroll in a college and have 4 years still. It depends when you first enroll in 12+ credit hours at a university
So is a 2.5 GPA bad?
Depends on the major I guess, but what do you think...
@@clayraterman I think it’s borderline bad I’m trying to play football in college and raise is that possible?
@@GuyVick Yes, work harder, get extra help, apply yourself more
@@clayraterman thank you so much
@@GuyVick You gotta invest in yourself before others will invest in you too my man - believe in yourself & go make something happen
I’m in a community college but on a transfer program. Does my clock start now or when i enroll for a university??
Jevon Williams check out my video on eligibility. If you’re enrolled in college taking 12 or more credit hours your clock has most likely started!
@@clayraterman what about if you enrolled in community college and not a 4 year school ?
@@dajhon.w7808 I'm not sure on that one, you may need to check the NCAA rules on that
Do you choose what position you try out for? Or do they choose for you?
If I’ve only played one year of football in highschool. What are my chances of making the team at the college level?
Depends on how your tryout goes and how your times are for all the drills! Sometimes they ask about previous experience and sometimes they don't from everyone I've heard from
Will you be given a chance, no matter how good of shape you're in, to try to walk on even if you have no playing experience?
Yeah it's usually just an open tryout that you sign up to do. However, if you've never played before and you're not in good shape and not some freak athlete - chances are definitely not looking as good haha
@@clayraterman Alright, thanks man.
It depends on school for example Texas Tech requires at least 2 years of high school football experience
RobRoden04 no they don’t
Coming out of juco after 3 years, good student and all. Does my eligibility clock start now or am I screwed.
Go watch my eligibility video
I am going to walk-on and I’m short and want to be on my local juco
@clay raterman
Nick Wright don’t let your height define you!! Go get it
I cant seem to find any info on a try out for my school, who do I talk to?
Goodluck man hope that helps!
clay raterman thanks really appreciate it
Very helpful
ItzReaper more coming soon!
I’m trying out at Ball State this fall
@@awareofreaper4296 Nice! goodluck dude let me know how it goes!
ItzReaper yo where are you from in Indiana? How was the try out?
Clay raterman bro I wanna be a walk on at tech and try out but I havent got accepted into the school yet..do I have to be accepted into the school to tryout and be a walk on?
Yes you have to be accepted and enrolled full time as a student taking 12+ credit hours!
clay raterman thanks bro... hopefully I don’t get made fun of for people a walk on and a red shirt

Good luck my man!
clay raterman thanks bro ima stick with your advice..did u make the team when u was a walk on
Hey man if you see this let me know what you suggest.
But more often then not you just need to find out when the tryout is and go tryout, usually doesn't help to contact anyone and in some cases I've seen the walk on coordinator be annoyed by people reaching out with unrealistic expectations and unrealistic promises.
clay raterman Thanks and yea I emailed the two directors of recruiting. Hopefully this whole thing can start to diminish in the coming weeks
I was just wanting to know if you think I would still be eligible for a D1 D2 school . I went to a juco for 2 years and graduated in 2019, however I never played football in college. I’m going to a 4 year school spring 2021 and was considering trying out.
not sure! go ask the school and check with NCAA eligibility center and try out!
Hey what should my daily routine be if I wanna walk on to Ohio state just like you. I play DB and wanna get better.
About to go try and walk on Florida State. Wish me luck
Run that 40 like there's a hippo sized spider chasing you. Goodluck my man!!
@@clayraterman thank you bro 👌🏿
What is the recruiting program called
yall think i can walk on at a school like Lehigh/Colgate/Georgetown if i didnt play hs ball but I got skill
Always worth a shot!
Dawg is a saftey💀💀 been thinking you were a linebacker
lol!
I’m 25 is that too old to walk on?
not if you have eligibility left
How long did you train for before trying out man ?
I played football growing up my entire life and I did strength and conditioning training for around 7 years before I was walking on (all through my younger ages). However, in terms of the actual tryout - I trained for around 6-8 months on the drills and specifically football focused training. I was already in great shape lifting and running wise, but those last 3 or so months before the tryout I added in some intense practice on the drills I knew I would be tested on.
So have you got any playing time or when do you think you’ll get playing time? Good luck on the future too 🤜🏽
I'm out of college now! Graduated May 2018 so the last season I played was the 2017 season, just spreading my knowledge to help people out!
Trying to walk on at Nebraska. Broke my hand half way into my senior year and they stopped recruiting me. Still working though 🤞
Get after it! Go make that team
I've watched every video and you've never said running back
What do you mean?? I didn't play running back lol I played safety ... I can't speak on things I don't have the experience with
thanks I needed this gsu here I come

Justin Ofotan yeah you can shoot me an email or DM me on Instagram @clayrat 👍🏼

Hey man I got my itinerary for tryout, what’s your Twitter or IG? So I can send it to you
@clayrat is my IG - send it over brotha
Came out of high school the voted All Region & Most Valuable OL.
I wanna play D1 and eventually shoot my shot at NFL. At 5’11” 290 I knew there was only so far I could go playing OL so now I’m tryna walk on as a FB at 6’0 245
This is a good video 👍🏾
