In this video, I go over a step-by-step process on how to walk on ANYWHERE for college football. I share my journey and perspective as a former walk-on at Ohio State and detail the exact steps I took to make the team. I was clueless and had no idea how this process worked when I first started going after this goal...I had no connections, no information, no anything. So at the very least, I hope...

Can you train me?
I can send some advice - message me on IG @clayrat
Great video man. I went to high school with Elijah goins who was a walk on at OSU.
that's awesome!! Was with him for a year or so there
Hey man I’m 25 and I’ve been watching your how to walk on videos. I’m very inspired, I’ve never been happy leaving contact sports. Just out of curiosity what’s the oldest freshmen you’ve met?
there's some military freshman out there that come in after they serve and can be really any age, but I met someone 26 yo technically as a freshman. Very rare circumstances though, most freshman are in there at 17,18
@@clayraterman I appreciate your response man! Good luck on your goals
I have been playing sports since I was little whether if it’s for competition on the competitive level or just for fun, I did cross country when I was in the sixth grade in my second year of middle school, I tried out for soccer when I was in the seventh grade in my third year of middle school, in my final year of middle school when I was in the eighth grade and in my first year of high school when I was in the ninth grade I went back to continue playing sports just for fun, in my second year of high school when I was in the tenth grade I planned on joining the basketball team but my mom said that I wouldn’t be able to attend because of Covid, because of the pandemic, so I joined the basketball team in my third year of high school as a junior and in my fourth and final year in high school as a senior, and I’m also planning on trying to be a walk on in wrestling as well, and I’m still planning on playing sports just for fun in college after community college
Thank you very much for the videos man, I go to Nashville State Community College, I’m currently in my second year of community college, I’m planning on joining the Ping Pong Club is because I love to stay active, have fun, try my best, and try to be the best I can be, I’m currently in Culinary School learning how to cook, learning how to be a chef, I’m going to graduate community college either in Fall 2025 or Spring 2026, I’m hoping to walk on to either Austin Peay State University or Lipscomb University, I’m 5’8 and 156 lbs currently wanting and trying to play football, basketball, soccer, baseball, tennis, golf, and frisbee. Thanks for the content, tips, and advice.
Love it !! Keep working toward your goals !
thank you for the insight brother ❤ great inspiration and story !
Yessir!! Thanks for listening
Thank you 🖖 😊
Yo your story inspired me. I’m 17 years old and a Senior and unfortunately I’ve only played in practices as a DB and WR before quitting due to grades and injury. I’ve missed summer workouts due to a summer job cutting grass, so I guess imma just work on my body and mind, and try and play semi-pro when the next season rolls around. I’m by no means scared, just nervous to re-aggravate an injury. I’ve played head up with people who have college offers right now and I’m willing to put in that work. Do you think it’s worth shooting for XFL or A college offer and could I do it ? Because I see myself doing either music, sports, or something with tech.
I replied in other video
@@clayraterman thanks for your feedback man 🙌🏽 !! I gave you a reply back.

If you're quitting hs football it means you probably don't like football that much, in which case college football is not going to be very realistic. It gets much more serious, less fun, and way harder in college. You probably like the idea of being a football player and what comes with it more than you actually like playing football. But that's up for you to figure out!
@@clayraterman I will definitely see. I’ve loved playing the sport, but basketball had my heart and I put my all into it, I just played football for the fun and love of it. I’ve only considered taking it serious, because I keep getting asked to play football and because I see myself in sports. What you said though is indeed true, but would trying to see if I want to go for it with semi-pro be a good option to see if I would have/build a genuine love for the game and maybe do ufl ??
What if you’re poor asf 😂
try harder to get a scholarship for academics or work a hard construction job to pay for school if you have no other sellable skills. I did pipefitting in highschool
Is it different for d3?
Probably a bit different yes! This is for D1

Also I invented my own football game .if anyone interested go to TH-cam type in rob edit small eagles vs Rams game. Look iam my own version on nfl. I created this game when I was on team as a walkon. I never let Bruce arians see the.project I was working on as well as . practice football and going to class. This was done 1990. I know what is to be a walkon on football team and a art major at the same time
Guys i exactly know what you mean i too was a walkon back in early 1990 at temple university football.i had to walk to campus from south philly to morth philly temple campus to save money on bus .plus i had walk 5 am i had to walk an hour and half before I got to practice
the grind!
im a bit late ig, but 1st up, did he make it? and second thing, is this still a good routine?
he did make it but not selected for fighters, and yes still good routine!!
Is the 40 yard dash and cone drill equally as important if I’m a kicker?
no, mainly just kicking...although they prob will still test you and it certainly doesn't hurt to do great
If the USNA accepts me, these will come in clutch.
Goodluck my man!!!
What size and numbers should you hit as a running back to even consider trying out for the d2 level and can you be too old? Sorry for the big question 😅
Silly questions - as good of numbers as you can get is the only answer lol...there's no set magical numbers. I could tell you to run a 4.6, but what if someone made it with a 5.0 second 40 because of what was needed at the time? There's no rules but If you're looking for averages google average NFL combine times for your position and bump it back a little bit. The real answer is figure out it you want to actually do this or not. Then if yes, train your ass off at all the drills every week, lift, get in good condition, and go do your best. I think most people ask these questions about what number they need to hit bc they either want validation which doesn't matter (the only validation is making the team) or they want an excuse to not go try. So go try, try your best, and actually put in the work to give it a good attempt!
Great story but did you make it on the field? Played in some games?
If I played juco Golf out of highschool & dropped out my third semester,, would that have any harm on my NCAA eligibility for football? Granted I’ll have to take juco classes to improve my Gpa to get into a NCAA school let alone have the walk on standard. Any reason I don’t walk onto a juco football team while I am improving my gpa for a future university alongside getting ready to walk on to a d1 team?
not super familiar w the juco stuff so I can't answer that! ask around and do what you thinks best
Appreciate your response💪🏼
@@RTLarry anytime my friend!
Thank you man I needed this
You got it brother
Hey is it to late to walk on if you start college in august
Usually tryouts are the first week of each semester if they have them
@@clayraterman ok I plan on walking on for Kent state
@@clayraterman so it’s not to late when I enroll in college in august ?
I’m trying to walk on somewhere. I’ve finished my sophomore year without going in on a single varsity play but man I know I’ve been working and I think I got what it takes. I’ve also learned to longsnap to try and put myself in a better position for success in addition to Safety. This was inspiring
Go make it happen brother. I didn't play as a sophomore in HS either. But I worked my ass off and became an all conference / district corner leading state in interceptions by my senior year. So don't think about walking on yet...you have 2 more years of MASSIVE potential for development in HS. The biggest 2. You need to find a way to play where you are now, that's step one. Get in the gym. Talk to the coaches. Specialize in something the team needs and become the BEST in the state at it. Don't run away from where you are right now by thinking of walking on. These next 2 years will determine if you have what it takes to walk on somewhere. Win where your feet are.
This might be late but when they made yall bench 225 was it with a bench shirt or not? Thanks in advance bruh
haha no bench shirts. And we didn't even do 225 test at my first tryout, although some places may.
Does this process apply to your new site, fina now? How very cool and very much worth the money to avoid my monthly overdraft fees 😅
It does not unfortunately haha but Fina is much better :).... we hope to support a notion integration at some point in the future though!
how long did you prepare for?
I'm not joking when I say this: my whole life was preparation. I played football my whole life and worked out like a maniac 5-6 days a week from 8th grade on (still do) Consistent actions over long long time. specifically for the tryout drills I spent about 3-4 months doing the drills before go time (the summer leading up)
I don’t have any prior experience playing football in high school but i want to try out to be a kicker because i played soccer a-lot throughout the years so do you have a different tryout for that position and is it more difficult for me to even tryout since i have no prior experience? Also can i tryout again in my sophomore year if i don’t do well on the tryouts in my freshmen year? Would appreciate it if you could answer these! Thank-you
Yes it would be harder of course having never played football. I've seen some soccer players do it before though too. And yeah you can tryout again as long as they have open tryouts
Any idea why plaid isn't working for some of my accounts?
I do not! Plaid has some troubles with certain accounts sometimes. If you're using Fina you can message our support and we can take a deeper look
@@clayraterman it's mainly the crypto accounts that don't work, all the banking and credit cards work fine. I was considering using Fina, however, when setting up my first free connection I wasn't able to find a connection that I was able to make. I wish plaid would fix this haha!
Do you have any tips on how to get faster? Been training and need help wit my speed
Your 40 is the only thing they really measure and so that's the most important stat. You can get better at the 40 by running it a LOT. Practice your starts specifically. Its hard for people to gain "top end" speed....but you can easily shave a couple tenths off your 40 by simply perfecting your start. Many people don't do that so I'd start there.
@@clayraterman thanks
Not in college yet, but for when I do, how does the schedule as far as classes work, for when I try to walk on?
They have a counselor who will usually help you schedule and get priority spots in classes to fit the schedule. Basically, you don't worry about it till you make the team, then you can switch stuff around.
@@clayraterman aight thanks 👍
Did he get selected for fighters?
nope - got heavy's and ultimately transferred to a diff job down the line!
Can I walk on as a 22 year old junior??
if you still have eligibility yes...and as a junior you should

Hey what time of the year does tryouts typically start ?
First week of fall and spring semester (typically aug/sept or January) - I've heard of some other ones that have happened at diff times or before summer as well
If you walk on to a big D1 school as a walk on, do you have the ability or option to redshirt for the team in your first year? Or is that only an option for scholarship players (or seniors)?
Nope you can redshirt
@@clayraterman Good to know. I’m currently playing JUCO, and I plan to transfer into some university by the following Spring semester. I’ll w you on more in the future.
Do you think you could’ve started for a smaller Div 1 FBS program, if you didn’t walk on at Ohio State?
I don't deal well with silly hypotheticals haha but if the question is "is someone who's a walkon at Ohio State good enough to start elsewhere", then probably yes, but it also totally depends on the person and a million other factors. For me personally, I would've never wanted to play at a smaller school so it never would have been in the cards.
@@clayraterman I totally get that. I’m playing JUCO ball in Nor CA rn, but I’ve been considering the walk on route to school like Nebraska, Oregon, ASU, or Georgia. Almost all of these school sound out of my league, but like you, I don’t wanna grow up having regrets about what level of competition I played for. I personally would rather fail at playing the highest level of CFB than have regrets at the lowest. I’m on schedule to graduate in Fall 23’, but I also could change that to Spring 24’. I’m going to walk on at at least one of these school by that point in time. So I’ll leave you updated on how that goes. Thanks Clay. 💯 -Stephen
