  • Mindless soldering of random electronics kits to some classical music. If you're watching this, I'm sure your day couldn't possibly get any more exciting than this...
    This kit was from China/eBay. It was $8.45, and shipping was free.
    I will probably get another radio kit, only with a digital tuner, in the near future. That will be more useful for FM tx/rx projects than this crappy analog one.
    Recommended starter soldering gear:
    Hakko FX888D Soldering Station: amzn.to/2Wh72CU
    Lead free solder: amzn.to/2WdnZOJ
    Flux Pen: amzn.to/2Mx49Ju
    Panavice junior: amzn.to/2WgNIFT
    Good and cheap side cutters: amzn.to/2B1LyRE
    Fume extractor: amzn.to/2Dyzb14
    Gear I use:
    Rigol DP832A Bench Power Supply: amzn.to/2Wh41lZ
    Fluke 87V Multimeter: amzn.to/2WjIbP1
    Blue ESD mat with grounding kit: amzn.to/2FVQbzQ
    LED Workbench Lights: amzn.to/2Tdr9Qy
    Rigol DS1102E Oscilloscope: amzn.to/2WfnDXM
    Agilent/Keysight MSOX2024A: amzn.to/2WdNOxY

    I got this kit, and I wish I saw your video instead of another guy's. The problem with my kit is that the resistors and the capacitors have their colors/numbers so worn that I could barely make out what they were. I hope I got them in the right positions.

    I managed the soldering of the 9088 IC more easily than I thought, with the aid of some tweezers and a magnifying glass on a stand. The flux pen is a good idea too.
    I have only just made a start with the wiring. I have got a bad head cold at the moment, which does not help concentration in a heated room. The speaker is wafer-thin, literally
    I just wish there was some room to fit something that'd have a little better bass.
    For a UK price of less than five pounds you can't really complain about the quality of the parts provided.

    By separating the turns of L2 like a bed spring I have managed to get stations.
    They are not quite in the right place. I don't know what the effect would be if you did the same with L1.
    I would like to sharpen the tuning of the AM side of the radio, if that is actually possible.
    Does adjusting the trimmers on the tuning capacitor affect the FM tuning. If 'yes': In what way?
    I can't believe that nobody has put up a documented build of one of these kits & the proper adjustment routine.

    • @OGElectronics
      @OGElectronics 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. I had to go back and forth w/the small coil spacing and the tuning cap trimmer to get FM band spread "kinda" right. AFA the AM trim cap, in my location, had no useful effect (I did not "cheat" and use a RF generator to try and calibrate either AM or FM.) You'd have to fiddle with the ferrite loop stick to correct AM bandspread calibration (the "large" coil would have no effect.) Remember this is a *single* RF stage/tuning design so you don't really get to "sharpen" ANYTHING, strongest local signal wins, period.

    • @cliffordnicholls4067

      The trimmers on the tuning capacitors affect the calibration towards the high end of the tuning dial.

    How “sensitive” is the receiver? .. is it strong for stations only, or is it a good rx?

    • @johnb6723
      @johnb6723 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not very sensitive or selective. That requires either a super-heterodyne, super-regenerative, or reflex regenerative receiver. The TA7642 is a basic TRF, which can be modded to become a reflex regenerative receiver if the circuit permits, but is not so with this kit circuit layout, which cannot be modded, and doesn't even have close-tolerance (1% or closer) components required for this type of thing, meaning that it will be a matter of luck if it works at all well, quite apart from the fact that components are jammed up against each other in such a small space instead of being well spread out like in British or American kits, and components being so utterly close to each other is potentially very bad design. It isn't any good at all beyond about 1MHz with this setup, and very unselective even at the lower frequencies if you live in an area within about ten miles of a very high power MW jtransmitter, which is true in my case. FM just gives a hiss unless you live across the road from the FM transmitter, and I don't.

  • @NJPurling

    What is the alignment procedure?
    Someone else who has done one of these radios advocated putting L2 on the print side of the board to make adjustment easier. Something to do with spacing the turns of the coil out a little.

    • @NJPurling
      @NJPurling 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have done two of these radios & unfortunately I have come to the conclusion that they are a piece of dung. The AM side is particularly bad.
      For what you pay it is no surprise. It is a disappointment after the effort of construction.

    When you were soldering the FM chip on the circuit board: Was that liquid flux?
    All I have is the Bakers rosin flux in a tin. I am wondering if wiping the pads over with a tissue smeared with flux would work.
    I think I can get a needle tip for my soldering-iron too.
    It seems like the soldering of the CD9088 FM chip is possibly why misigun's radio only works on AM.
    I have bought one of these kits and I am wondering about the best & safest way of soldering the 9088 chip in as it is a surface-mount type. I am surprised that the chip does not come in a variant where a socket can be utilised as with the audio IC.
    The AM section is simply a TA7642 IC, a clone of the Ferranti ZN414.

      @TechnologyCatalyst  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NJPurling If it was an SMD part, it was solder paste. If it wasn't, then it could have been my flux pen to ensure a good clean solder flow. Both are very handy to have.
      The SMD stuff isn't too hard to solder. Just make sure you clean the pads with flux or some type (even if you have flux-core solder) Just get a tiny bit of solder on your iron tip, then "tack" solder one corner pin, then you should be able to get a medium amount of solder on the iron tip, then wipe it across the pins on the other side. The solder mask should prevent solder bridges between pins. (if it does bridge, just wipe the iron across the pins again. If that doesn't work, use solder braid to remove excess solder and try again.

    I have finished the radio: FM works, sort of. How do you set the tuning for FM?, so you actually get FM stations about where they should be?
    It is tuning something, but no music or talk stations yet. I assume that you have to do something to those little copper coils, but won't do anything until I hear from you.
    AM is OK.
    The set gave sound, after I switched one speaker wire. A few people have made that mistake.
