      Many of them do for photos and stage shows. 9 times out of 10 they wear the shit once or twice. People will think it's real because of who they are and they are percieved to have money. They end up giving it to one of their guys on the team to keep them looking rich. Trust not many are wearing real shoes for stage shows especially if they have a sneaker connect ordering them and getting it to their stylist. Trust me I've seen it with my own two 👀

      @Doug Castillo There's some truth in that: it's not often the case but it does happen. When it does, its usually because a replica factory wants to impress a major buyer or is just starting up operations, so they put in the extra effort, whereas the retail pair may be QC'd by someone who is being judged more on yield rate than "acceptable" quality. It's actually a lot more common in the apparel sector - you have people like me go in and help companies cut costs, but sooner or later there's a risk things go too far and you tip over from cutting costs into cutting corners... :-(

    I have done some work in the industry (this isn't my real name, ha!) and would like to give you a bit of insight. What often happens is that counterfeits/replicas/fakes start off life as factory samples: Nike, adidas, Puma etc...they do not make their own shoes in their own factories (this is slowly changing for some very high tech shoes though). They simply subcontract out manufacture to independently run factories in China, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia etc. What happens is they send design specs to a number of factories and ask them to make sample pairs, to check for quality etc. After some banter on pricing, they may select one, sometimes two factories to do a production run. The other factories that didn't get the order are supposed to destroy all existing samples and the tooling...most reputable ones do...But on occasion, some staff members take the blueprints and manufacturing process documentation, sometimes tooling and sell them to less reputable places. That is how the quality replicas often start life. There is a huge amount of shoemaking expertise in Asia and many of the Nike Air limited releases are based off well understood technology and materials - the Nike Air Force design has been around for over 30 years, thus it is easy for many to make excellent quality replicas. It is harder to properly copy higher technology designs like the adidas ultraboost, with the knit material uppers, Continental rubber outsole and of course the boost material, but this is changing rapidly. Oh, and sometimes 'replicas' are made by the authorised factories, but simply do not pass QC checks...and sometimes, what they do is when they get an order for maybe 25,000 pairs, they make 30,000 instead. 25,000 get sent through authorised supply chain channels...and the other 5,000 leave the factory via guys on motorbikes, private trucks etc. It's an interesting industry indeed...

    • @JoshuaDaniher
      @JoshuaDaniher  5 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      Wow thanks for your insight! I’m sure plenty of people would like to see this. It is very interesting and I’m interested to see how it changes in the future as it seems some of these fakes for shoes like Jordan 1s ect are reasonably easy to replicate and the fakes just get better and better. Thank you for sharing your insight and welcome to the channel! 😄

    • @hiratiomasterson4009
      @hiratiomasterson4009 5 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      @@JoshuaDaniherHappy to be here and see how people respond to replicas...and especially when they find out the definition is not so easy as to what one is. Some replicas indeed are pretty awful, the type of stuff you would have gotten in the 1990s: the basic silhouette is there but the design details are all over the place. But some of the best ones...even someone who actually makes authorised pairs would struggle to tell the difference: materials and tooling are identical or within QC tolerance. The real problem seems to be when people get these high quality replicas and sell them on StockX as the real deal - and even the StockX experts can be fooled. No easy answers to that one...

    • @JoshuaDaniher
      @JoshuaDaniher  5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Yeah I think the biggest problem in the world of fakes is the sale of them disguised as authentic. I’m not 100% on what StockX or goat do to legit check pairs but if they’re just looking for cosmetic differences than I think they will eventually run into trouble when sneaker reps become too close to tell. Idk if sneaker compiles will start personally adding authentication barcodes or tags to each shoe after they come back from Asia but otherwise I don’t see a genuine way to legit check. Also when legit pairs may still have the odd defect

    • @hiratiomasterson4009
      @hiratiomasterson4009 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@JoshuaDaniher There's work being done on barcodes as well as blockchain technologies to help with authentication, but it's a never ending game: one side acts, the other reacts, then the other reacts to that etc etc ad nauseum. When you have retail pairs going for $200-300 for a production run of ~800-5,000, but the demand for the sneakers is tens of thousands (or as with the ultraboost initially, where adidas massively underestimated the demand for the line in 2015 and because the materials and production techniques were so different to the norm, it was very hard to get a pair for the first 2 years and resale prices were also pretty nutty), then StockX prices run into the high hundreds and in a few cases a few thousand...and suddenly these guys in China (who really don't make that much margin per sneaker) suddenly see the chance to rake in some solid cash with very little overall risk...the temptation is pretty clear. One of thing I should mention was that back in 2017, there was one new Quality Control manager at a major factory near Putian (where else?) who thought he would make an impression by setting ridiculously high standards for a batch of AF1s: one tiny stitch not perfectly symmetrical and even, the entire shoe was chucked: the yield rate (percentage accepted as defect free) dropped to below 15%. Almost 600 pairs went into a reject pile before he got a talking to. But those shoes were not accepted back as OK...and they weren't junked. Have heard a few stories about what happened, but the most credible one was that the QC guy got rid of them via unofficial channels and gave all the money back to the factory to keep his job. These sneakers are not fake, but they are "unauthorized": a handful may have defects that would normally not pass QC, but the majority are well within production tolerances. Another grey area...

    • @JoshuaDaniher
      @JoshuaDaniher  5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      That’s crazy man! Also crazy how they’re going to use block-chain for an actual physical item, like I’m aware how it can be used for digital authentication but not with an actual physical product. Appreciate your insight a heap, so with all you know do you advocate for fakes or are you against it? Like what side are you on and what is the biggest reason you feel that way?
      I mean I have a list of probably like 20+ sneakers I want that I’m waiting till I can afford when I’m working full time that might cost $30k+ if I were to collect them all but probably like less than $4k if I bought reps, is it even worth trusting the resale market if reps are floating around in that space now? I don’t want to pay $10k+ on ‘authentic’ sneakers from the resale market if someone can’t confidently say they’re 100% authentic as otherwise I might just be paying more for reps! Idk man what do you think for now and in the future as what will happen and what sneakerheads should do if they miss copping their latest sneakers for retail?

    • @JoshuaDaniher
      @JoshuaDaniher  4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Thanks for both of your opinions, I agree they are probably produced in the exact same factory. You can’t say reps don’t use child labour unless you can confirm they use their own seperate factories yet I think they’re the same factories for everything and Nike doesn’t own them they’re just outsourced to have them produced.

    • @JoshuaDaniher
      @JoshuaDaniher  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @Ryan Loomis 2.0 yeah man i can agree with that, ive seen videos similar too that aswell. I mean im not much of an expert on the subject but I do know bulk engineering companies that outsource almost every single part they produce as long as it makes sense to have it shipped cost-wise. I wonder though if Nike does any quality control when it arrives in America or whichever country it is being sold? As I assume after each pair is produced it is just shipped to wherever it is going to be sold straight from the factory.

That's how good they have made the fake ones now. I personally don't have reps, nor am I a diehard sneakerhead. But to keep it 100% with you, I could give 2 fucks whether you wear reps or not. If you don't have the money or just don't want to spend thousands on some sneakers, then I perfectly understand. If they make you happy, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. As long as you acknowledge that they are reps and don't claim them to something they are not, I see no problem. Do what makes you happy.

    As I see it, a shoe is a shoe the only difference between those sneakers would be the factory they are produced in and their prices, they are basically overall the same design. Most people dont like replicas cause they are cheaper then the normal price and In my opinion of you want to flex just leave the price mark on your shoe to show how much you paid for it since that's really the only thing making the shoes different, of every shoe in the world costed 100$ there would be no such thing as real or replica cause people wouldn't care as they all costed the same, we would view them as only shoes but now that there is a 1000 dollar design, if you get ot for cheaper the shoe is automatically labeled replica or fake which dont make much sense, just leave the tag or take receipt with you when you spend that much money on a shoe so you can flex the price cause that's really all that you can flex as design comes cheap and expensive but shows as a shoe

    • @JoshuaDaniher
      @JoshuaDaniher  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s not a money thing I feel it’s more a community thing, I mean sure some people just want to flex, but when I wear authentic sneakers I know I’m a genuine contributor to the sneaker community and I’m more comfortable not feeling like I’ve faked it. Regardless I still see your perspective and that’s the great debate or reps.

Shoes that I genuinely want to wear are sold out in seconds and aftermarket prices are double if not triple the price. I remember a time where it was all about wearing shoes but now it’s just a bunch of hypebeast’s and resellers causing high prices and in my opinion ruining the sneaker industry and culture. That said, if you buy a fake shoe just be honest.

    I’ve started considering reps after I received multiple pairs of fakes from StockX over the past year or so. I wasn’t able to get my money back for most because the “shoes meet our criteria for authenticity”. Why should I pay the authentic price if I’m not getting authentic sneakers right? The morality of it doesn’t really affect me because I already paid full resale price for the shoes so I don’t feel like I’m cheating by purchasing a fake pair that’s almost identical in quality to a real pair.

No way I'd be wearing my NYC Pigeons to work at a restaurant if they're real. I'd be okay with the resale market's crazy pricing on limited releases if there wasn't backdooring or bots having odds waaaaaaaay stacked against normal people with one account. Everyone had a fair shot at the sneakers, that's what turns me to reps. SNKRS has a million bots, so do so many other sites and it gets to the point where it's not worth the frustration to just own a pair of shoes.

    It is just a matter of how you put the pieces together. It doesn't matter whether you buy real or fake ones. If you look good wearing them, then that is that. I pity those who spend thousands but to the eyes of most people around, they actually either look plain or just ridiculous. By the way, 'legit check' is almost compulsory nowadays when you buy from small resellers, and that is just a clear proof that most people actually don't really know the difference between the real and fake pairs.

      I think depending on the complexity of the sneaker reps are good. Like a Jordan 1 is such an uncomplicated shillouette that the reps are almost identical but for more complex sneakers like say the FOG air 1 they might not be perfect due to the technical nature of the shoe

    I have no issue with replicas (as long as you're not selling them as real) as there is absolutely nothing to to stop Nike from charging market price for these kinds of shoes in the first place and/or producing enough to satisfy demand. I'd pay $800 for a pair of TS1's if they were direct from Nike, but I'm not going to pay that from GOAT or Stockx when there is any kind of doubt over what I'd actually be getting.
    So then it's either a case of don't bother at all or look in to replicas.

    I own real AJ1s as well as reps....and damn if I can tell the different sometimes 🤔 Afterall it's just patches of leather on a rubber cup sole so they all feel pretty much the same on feet.
    The only group that I can see being significantly damaged by the rep sneakers industry are the resellers, so I'm OK with that. This is the only real way to reign in the horrific price-gouging being conducted. If the risk of copping fakes is too great hopefully folks will slowly stop willingly fork out thousands for sneakers that has a retail price of a couple hundred bucks. Brands will always do ok, as what would sell out will sell out, so I don't see their bottomline being affected too much. Of course there's always the risk of unknowingly purchasing fakes but caveat emptor I s'pose.

    Honestly, there’s technically nothing wrong with them. Just a cheaper way of getting the shoe because in all reality, it’s practically the same. Same materials and everything for the most part. Like if you really think about it, what’s the problem with them when your saving a shit ton of money to practically get the same thing🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @JoshuaDaniher
      @JoshuaDaniher  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That’s exactly right and as long as people aren’t trying to sell fakes for the resale price of authentic pairs it seems fair right?
      But morally it is still a problem. Imagine if you came up with a really cool design for something like a hoodie or like some device that has come straight from your own ideas and you’re really proud of it and so you get it trademarked ect and so legally it’s your product because it’s your ideas that made it a reality. Now imagine if someone or multiple companies just started selling the exact same thing and they’re now profiting of your idea and your brand and you don’t see any return from it? Would that make you feel good or would you like to stop it? If that happened to a friend would you still by the replica product because it’s ‘technically’ the same thing or would you feel bad that your friends hard work and ideas has just been stolen by another company did nothing but plagiarise the work your friend did?
      Now you can say that Nike is a huge company and that they don’t need the profit but I think the problem is more regarding people profiting of stealing other companies ideas and designs, and these ideas and designs are what makes a company valuable.

    • @secretdestinyDE
      @secretdestinyDE 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joshua Daniher At first: I would also not buy a fake pair. But big company’s like Nike etc always make full profit on hyped sneakers like the off whites. They usually sell out within seconds. It’s more the resell market which is affected. But otherwise I think people who buy fakes would not pay resell prices, but many would have copped at the release if they could. Small companies or big ones with higher stock numbers definitely lose profit by fakes.

    • @JoshuaDaniher
      @JoshuaDaniher  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree with you. What I don’t understand is that I don’t see to much Nike or adidas do to combat the efforts of fake sneaker production? They seemingly don’t care, I mean at least off white filed a law suit of Wish.com for selling fake off white products but I don’t think I ever hear about big companies like Nike doing anything to stop it even though they have all the money and power to do so! I also understand the need for scarcity to drive the sneaker market and sell out releases but I also think they could release more pairs for every hyper sneaker and instead of selling out in a couple hours they might totally sell out in a couple days, Nike gets more money as they moved for stock, the consumer has a real opportunity to get the sneakers they want and the resale market will still live as sneakers will only have a single release date like myself atm wants a pair of Union Jordan 1s and so I’m going to have to buy them resale as they’re not releasing again but if they released twice as many pairs originally I’d still have to pay resale at this point.
