Well first off, I’m glad you guys enjoyed the movie!! Also, I really appreciate the interest you both showed in wanting to learn more black cinema and about black culture. As someone else mentioned, not a lot of non-black TH-camrs are talking about this movie, and for you guys to give it some shine along with other black movie staples really means a lot, so thank you. As a black person who can't play spades for the similar reasons that Clifton was told (when I was young, I was too young and the moment I hit 15 I was too old) I TOTALLY understand his motivations. I get mad at every function where I can't participate and I'm almost 30
I appreciate and respect that perspective. I was the one hovering around the table when the adults played spades/dominoes because I wanted to play. Now I’m a respected, almost feared, combatant in my family.

That'd be funny to see. Idk where the guest guy lives where it's hard to find Rap snacks, but they're always at my local Schnucks or Walmart or at a gas station. I've never heard about the drinks tho.
@@blueismylove3128a friend of mine found all of the snacks at a Spencer’s, but then ordered the drinks online. The snacks were fine, but the drinks were just pure sugar and none of us could even finish one bottle of Oowee Lemonade. Tried cutting it with a bunch of ice, but it didn’t help much.

My brother and I watched, and we were sat next to some very excited Black women who were having an absolute ball in the theater(we are both Asian American). The joy on their faces when Lisa bludgeoned one of the killers was amazing, and literally everyone took a sec to cheer and clap for that moment, it was great!😆
This Movie Was So So Accurate And The Applebee's Part Was Really Good, And The O Reilly Auto Parts Was Incredible To Hear Cause When That Commercial Comes On I Always Sing It And Sometimes Sing It Randomly When The Commercial Doesn't Come On 😂
Prince talking about colorism is really interesting. My partner is half Black, half Korean, raised by her Black relatives but “looks” Korean. She deals with a lot of culture confusion and it sucks.
She’s not super into horror but I’ve been talking to her about this movie, hope she checks it out
Edit: Two people have now explained to me that I misunderstood what colorism is, and I’ll find resources to educate myself
What Prince mentions is not colorism. Please read the Darkest Child or Color Matters for more info on the subject. Colorism doesn’t apply to lighter skinned individuals in a racialized group. She might experience discrimination from darker skinned Black people but wouldn’t experience colorism because that is the systemic discrimination of darker skin tones like in jobs, higher education, etc.
@@2kooldancin Yeah this is the comment I was looking for. His grandmother would've had lightskin privileges growing up in the 30s. Life for her definitely would've been much harder if she were a darkskin woman. That's not to say she didn't deal with identity crises, it just isnt specificially colorism.

I didn’t say my partner experiences colorism, I said that because she is biracial and wasn’t exposed to her Korean culture, she deals with culture confusion and not feeling like she belongs

It's interesting that James cites Scream as introducing him to a lot of horror movies because I was introduced to a lot of them through Dead Meat. The Descent, The Thing, Sinister, Get Out, Hereditary, Orphan, Shaun of the Dead and of course the Scream franchise are some of the best movies I've watched in recent years and I owe it all to the channel. Thank you James and Chelsea for introducing me to one of my new favorite movie genres.
Glad to hear you all enjoyed it. I'll be pausing at 20 minutes to avoid spoilers, a wedding stopped us from seeing it over the weekend but will definitely be seeing it this week

Just watched this last night with friends. The theatre was packed and the movie was absolutely hilarious! Pure fun with my group laughing from start to finish. Much like y'all mention, the O'reilly joke had the whole theatre nearly crying from laughter. I think the joke about friends and the correct answer was perfectly calling out black representation in earlier media while still maintaining such a lighthearted self aware jab. I would love to see this movie get a kill count and I could see this becoming a beloved classic that works as a period piece for 2023

I saw this a couple days ago, LOVED IT! The first person I thought of to survive a horror flick was Ving Rhames in the Dawn of the Dead remake.

Colorism is explicitly applied to darker skin tones as it is proved systemically. Please take the time to read The Darkest Child, the Bluest Eye, The Color Complex to learn more about how colorism works on a global systemic scale.

One thing which I may be able to give a bit of context on is that "black guy dies first" was actually originally a science fiction thing, not a horror film thing. I'm not entirely sure at what point the confabulation occurred but I'm guessing it was around the end of the 90s.
That's interesting I'll have to look into that more.

My favorite part of this podcast is simply how thoughtful James and Chelsea are about everything they discuss and with who they discuss those thing with, including each other. Its a wonderful thing to hear people try to learn about a culture or point of view from a place of sincere desire, and as a biracial person, I love this episode!

Thank you so much for doing a podcast on this movie! When I saw it in my feed, I was honestly surprised, but pleasantly. I'm a HUGE fan of your channel (and DnDnD) and horror is my favorite genre. I'm also a black woman, so I was curious to know what you two thought. I will commend you for having someone like Prince in on the interview. I definitely wanted to hear your opinions, but having someone with the actual experiences and understanding of the culture really elevates the discussion. Too many don't bother with that, so I really commend you too. 🙂
I saw this movie opening weekend with my mom (also black). She doesn't go to the movies very often and I didn't think this would be her taste. She loved it! When we went in initially (start of previews), no one was there. By show time, there were probably 15-12 ad most of them weren't black. O_O While it was a small audience, we still had a lot of fun! Prince brought up an important point that black people are not a monolith and we don't have the same exact experience. There were quite a few things I had to look up afterwards. 😛
Regarding that aspect, I loved the themes and the messages in this movie. While we had the racist parts directed at black people, there were also stereotypes that exist within the community. I honestly understood how Cliffton felt, as I was that person. I'm Nigerian and black, so I'm dark-skinned, but I was still teased for "acting white". Most of my friends were white. My neighborhood was very white. Even today, most of my nerdy hobbies are heavily white, male, and usually heterosexual. The colorism found within our community dates back to slavery, but we have still held on to it. Being "black enough" is another issue an sometimes feels like playing into stereotypes. I love how the movie addressed these issues, while staying unapologetically black.
My final comment is regarding the style and tone, which was touched upon in the beginning of the podcast. When I saw the trailers, I assumed it was going to be another Scary Movie ripoff. I HATE parody movies, especially that series, but I wanted to support a black film. I honestly figured that black people would be the only ones to see it (SOOOO glad I was wrong on that front). I think they struck a good balance. There were some "Scary Movie" moments in there (they picking the weapons back up before following the cop was hilarious to me), but they were few. I'm glad they didn't go full SM with this. 🙂

I have so much to say about this movie that I feel like I would just go on forever, but I loved it. I didn't have all of the same experiences growing up (no one of the same culture ever does) but I had a lot of them and it was great going to my local theater with a primarily black audience and enjoying it together (My entire theater broke into the O'Reily song as well lmao!).
The killer was obvious but it didn't take away from the movie at all. On the parody scale, I would put around Scream but tipped more towards Funny on the Funny/Scary scale. Scenes like the Friends bit, the voting for Trump, or the Kool-Aid scene just had me cracking up.
I loved all the commentary on colorism and what is and isn't black because it was one of the things that I hated dealing with the most when I was growing up. I'm pretty dark-skinned but I am also a nerd which was enough to be considered an Oreo growing up. I don't know if it stung more coming from other Black people who should know better or from Cubans who had no right to make a comment like that in the first place.
Oh and I totally forgot to comment on the gay aspect too, I remember my mom told me being gay just isn't a thing in Jamaica... which is obviously wrong, but dealing with that growing up sucked too. The fact they tackled homophobia in the black community was also nice, even if it was brief. They really did a good job trying to poke at as many facets of the Black American experience they could.
I think the best part is how they tackled all of the social issues like police brutality from our perspective but didn't linger on it overly long and make it a downer. Movies like Ten Years a Slave or a slog to sit through because it just feels like it's feeding into White Guilt and it's about them being sorry. These kind of movies are fun and still try and get messages about without making the whole audience depressed.

Yeah. If anything, the most common type of first victim by far is white.
Probably because a majority of actors are white.

I'd like to point out that colorism doesn't only effect biracial people either. All my siblings are blackity black black, but all of us are different skin tones. My oldest sister being by far the lightest and my younger sister being the darkest. My youngest sister was/is consistently bullied by her other BLACK (it be ya own people 😒) classmates. The main insult they'd throw at her was calling her "Harriet Tubman" when she'd have her baby fro out. Sometimes she'd come back home crying because of it and Allah help me ive never wanted to beat up some kids so bad in my life.
Also growing up with my older sister (we're barely 2 years apart) I was never noticed by the boys in our neighborhood being the darker skined one, even by the ones closer to my age than hers. Later i realized i was asexual so in the end it didn't really matter, but at the time it still hurt that my skin color made it so that i wasn't pretty enough to be noticed while my older sister got all the attention. Sorry if that isnt really coherent, I dont really remember specifics.
I still look back in those times with fond memories tho.
Edit because I have more to add on to my asexualness lol. I remember I didn't even remember/notice not being attractive to the neighbor boys because I wasn't really thinking about it. It was my older sister who pointed it out to me.
My sister has had the same experience being the darkest out of the three of us. Constantly bullied and disrespected by other African American kids. She has built some confidence but it definitely afdected her throughout middle school to highschool. I've done my best to remind her "the blacker the berry the sweeter the juice" and that she's beautiful despite what they say about her. It has helped her by seeing representation on screen and social media of people that look like her.
And I've dealt with the judgement and somewhat shunning for being bisexual. Like my mom physically beat me after she found a note a girl and I had wrote on. It definitely hurts and sucks to be treated badly and judging by the people that are supposed to love me unconditionally.

Also, whenever _Friends_ is mentioned, one of you brings up the cost of Monica's apartment - but it is explained in show. It had been her grandmothers place, and was rent controlled, so she was renting (or subletting?) under her grandmothers name to keep it the rent controlled price!
I had to go listen to Tamia - So Into You when it was mentioned. Love that song a lot.
This was a movie I went in with no expectations. I saw it because nothing else was playing that week that I was interested in and hadn't already seen, and I have a movie pass, so I get one free ticket, so I go to the movies once a week with my brother. I was basically just hoping it wouldn't suck. It did a lot more than just not suck. I got quite a few good laughs out of it, and I'm about as dark as snow, so it definitely crossed that racial barrier for me. It also was actually somewhat effective even as a stalker/slasher film, although one with its tongue in cheek.
Wow what great timing. I watched this last night and thought it was absolutely hilarious. All the characters and cast absolutely crushed it! 10/10. Lowkey some good scares too

I wanna thank you guys for this podcast. Unfortunately I was one of the people who seen the trailer and noticed the black people die first trope and was immediately like, "nuh-uh, I watch Dead Meat and that's actually a rarity." But I also stear away from movies that have to show audience reactions on the basis that it's a little gimmicky like using review tweets in tv spots. But again I want to thank you for today's episode so I can get more informed on a movie I potentially might really enjoy in the future that I probably wasn't going to even attempt. You guys do an amazing service to the horror community. Filmmakers and fans alike.

I had the opportunity to go to a free screening of this last month. I took my mom and we loved it. The audience loved it. It was great. Also the black survivor I always think of that people forget is Kincaid in Nightmare 3. I know what happens in part 4, but he still survived part 3.
I worked at a movie theater when the movie came out and a majority of the audience was older white people. To be fair, it was located near a hive of retired communities but from what I remember, everyone who left the theater after enjoyed The Blackening. A few people would pull us aside and say how it was hilarious and they recommended it. I watched after my shift one day and it was a pretty packed theater. We all were laughing so hard throughout. 100 out of 10 movie experience.

the great part about black horror movies is there are so many guests you can get from academics to other creators(i hope you can get kennie jd on the pod since she’s cool and from the detroit area)

Where I’m from (St. Louis area), you will find Rap Snacks in convenience stores, liquor stores, and gas stations where a good number of black people reside. Rap Snacks also make noodle cups.

as a dark skinned person, i know it’s a common experience for lightskinned people to struggle with that “am i black or white” mentality but i don’t think lightskinned people experience NEARLY as much colorism as dark skinned people. in fact i don’t think the jokes that they get from dark skinned people is colorism at all. dark skinned people don’t “hate” them cause their skin is lighter, they’re more privileged than dark skinned people and most of the time, they refuse to acknowledge it and play it off as dark skinned people being jealous of their light skin. their proximity to whiteness will always give them the upper hand, they’ll always be more respected, they’ll always be closer to the “beauty standard.” dark skinned people(specifically dark skinned women) have been the butt of the joke for YEARS and dark skinned women are constantly under attack. colorism is discrimination against people with a DARKER skin tone, lightskinned people do not experience that, they get made fun of, but they’re not systematically discriminated against because of their skin tone. literally just look at the amount of black media where the main character is a light skinned woman and the “villian” is a dark skinned person. they have their struggles, but colorism is definitely not one of them

my stepmom watches a lot of romcoms and when the main couple is interracial or black the girl is allllways light skinned. and her bff is a sassy dark skinned girl too. pisses me off so much lmao

Also yeah, I love them talking about colorism and what it takes to be black. I hated that kind of stuff growing up SO much as a kid. I'm not sure if I hated more from other Black people who should know better or from the Hispanics who had no right to comment on it at all. Being called an Oreo growing up was so frustrating.
I’ll forgive Prince for mis-speaking, but Khadijah, Synclaire, and Regine lived together. Maxine had her own place across the street bc she was a successful lawyer and could afford to live alone. And of course Kyle and Overtone lived on the second floor. And yes they all would visit Khadijah’s place lol. I LOVE Living Single.

I enjoyed it. I’m mixed so I realated to Grace Buyers but I did miss some jokes and beats and my brain was turning lol. My white boyfriend was so lost. It truly is a black movie. I also liked that it felt like a good old fashioned horror comedy. Wasn’t too serious but also wasn’t straight up dumb like a parody. I enjoyed it. Can’t wait to watch it again bc I alway miss things at the drive in.

This movie had a lot of cultural touchstones and I liked that it ended in a way that Clifton could return. Seeing Sinqua Walls as Nnamdi was fun since he was in Shark Night which was a modern sharkploitation horror movie. I think Prince may have confused Idris Elba for Taye Diggs in How Stella Got Her Groove Back, but Fresh (1994) is an underrated classic in that film genre. May I also suggest Dead Presidents and Paid In Full when you watch Set It Off... Don't Let Go (Love) by En Vogue was also pretty popular from the soundtrack and Come On by Billy Lawrence featuring MC Lyte. Diedrich Bader's characters just can't catch a break with what happened to him in this movie and Shazam! Fury of the Gods lol. I would be funny if We Can't All Die First ends up getting used as the title of the movie in certain parts of the world the way Live Die Repeat end up being the name of Edge of Tomorrow in certain foreign markets. Great podcast as always y'all & looking forward to the next one.

I went in thinking it was a parody, but it's a great horror comedy. Grace Byers, love Grace Byers.
It's interesting, I was 15/16 when _Living Single_ , and then _Friends_ started airing - and I loved and watched both of them, but at the time I never thought of them as being similar shows because the characters and style of humor were so different.
I wonder if I'd feel the same now if I watched either again?
