    I didn’t get the black best friend feel from Mollie. I was a bit worried at first since I’m a black woman and I’m always wary of that trope or the sassy black woman trope. But once she went from being “my white best friend is dumb” to actively trying to find her and then saving her life I think it subverted the trope nicely. Noa would have most likely died if Mollie hadn’t been there at the end and I loved that

      As a fellow Black woman horror and film nerd, I think what made this different than the Magical Negro trope is that we actually get to know Mollie as her own character with her own story, rather than her just being added to scenes to establish that the main character has a BFF, and then not seeing her at all until the end when she deus-ex-machinas the movie and saves her bestie. Very well done

      Also when Noa has a chance to escape the first thing she does is go save Mollie. So their friendship didn’t feel one sided. They were both willing to go into dangerous situations to save the other. Mollie’s life and safety being presented as just as important as Noa’s is part of what kept it out of the stereotypical black best friend category.

      All of y'all are so right. She's not the Black Best Friend, she's the best friend who is loved and appreciated as much as she loves and appreciates Noa. It's more like sisterhood than friendship and I love it

    One of my favorite parts about the movie is Noa, Mollie, and Penny escaping and how they all worked so hard to protect each other and make sure they all got out.
    Like, Penny basically doesn’t even know Noa and Mollie, and tbh, I wouldn’t blame her if she was solely focused on escaping while Noa and Mollie fought off Steve, because the idea of facing the person who *amputated your leg* must be terrifying. But no, she was right there with them helping take Steve down. At one point, you can even see her in the forest background crawling to help.
    And then Mollie being a literal ride or die for Noa and both of them just doing the most to keep each other safe, and Mollie carrying Penny because she can’t walk, and Noa making sure they get Penny out when she really could’ve just left her.
    Like damn, just seeing that teamwork made me proud.

      I think the idea of shared trauma comes into it. People bond over shared experiences, both positive or negative. They may have not had much of a personal attachment but they've had an experience between them that will last.

      Well they did beat him really bad and kill him in the woods- in the end it was the wife that was the last threat that Mollie needed to come back and save Noa from when they thought they were in the clear. Something I keep coming back to is how Chad gives that greasy speech about how "women used to be more dedicated to femininity" and how Noah "would look great in a dress" and then later Steve, who is brought in as the good love interest after Chad in the rom-com beginning, dresses her up in a pink dress with a big-ass bow on the chest

  • @violetm2101

    What I find the most interesting is that the imprisonment of the women "Steve" is butchering in the basement is almost a symbolism for abusive relationships. Melissa, Penny, and Noa all being in different stages mentally, suffering from the abuse from a man. At one point Penny is explaining to Noa that Melissa has lost her mind, and she says: "She's gone crazy. I don't blame her, no judgement here. I understand." As if Melissa is a woman so far mentally gone because the torture she underdured, and Penny being in the middle of process, knows that hopeless feeling. Noa even seeks to ask them how they can get out and who will help them, Penny responding saying that there is no one. Reminds me of how abusers will isolate and target vulnerable people.
    Just my take but i love how this movie is symbolic of SO MANY different experiences of women.

    Steve being sloppy makes since to me. The more criminals commit a crime, especially killers, they get more blunt, hide their tracks less, and more show off. It's cause they want to show off to the police that they are smarter and more clever than others. I totally believe Steve thinks the same way

      Yeah, the pictures that we see on his wifes Facebook account seem relatively recent as they both look the same. So by that point he's been doing this for well over decade, if not decades. It's like you said, at some point once someone has managed to get away with a crime long enough they start to convince themselves that they're invincible, so they don't think that they need to be as careful. You can also see this with him actually paying for his and Noa's drinks with a credit card, which allowed Mollie to track him. Something you always hear from criminals on crime shows is that you always pay with cash. But paying by credit card, or sending someone a picture that could be reverse image searched is something that he's likely done many times, and that's never resulted in him getting caught.
      That's also what just makes him a scarier characters. Especially when you know of real crime cases where people have acted similarly. Where they've gotten away for it for so long that they're actually able to live their life in a completely normal way.

    For my late husband, his foot fetish was more about touching and smelling feet. the first time we ever messed around, no matter what position we were in or how awkward it was physically, he had his hands on one or both of my feet the entire time. I didn't know about his fetish at that time but I remember thinking wow he's really touching my feet a lot... Then like a year into our marriage he asked me to wear the same pair of socks two days in a row bc he said that would get them to the perfect smell. I was mortified and I was too embarrassed so I refused. Then about a year after that, about two and a half years into our marriage he died in a very sudden accident at work. So let that be a lesson to you. Life is short. Let your spouse smell your feet.

Reminded me of a time when I was in rehab for a year, and they held us under water against our will and left in -10 degree temperature naked in stone rooms without mattresses for 3 days at a time, 3 pieces of bread for food per day. I came out like him from WS, didn't want to talk to anyone, struggled with relationships in my life, never opened up to people. But the guy remembered who he was. He really inspired me through that. Fortunately the guy that did that to us has gone to prison but still left an anger inside of my heart that has never left completely.

She did have to do an Irish accent for "Normal People," which in itself is an incredible miniseries (Highly recommend a watch if you haven't, both main actors are incredible!!!). She's also in another TV series called "War of The Worlds" where it's a very strange series, and she's near enough the lead again in a huge cast of varied languages (It's not like the older "War of The Worlds" it's a different take on it) - She does alright based on the storyline that is very meh the more it went on (2 series of that so far of 10 lots of episodes) - Recommend Series 1, not so much Series 2!

    ALSO with that reflection shot, and it might just be me, but knowing what we know it seems like the shot of her through the mirror was meant to show us a bit of Steve's perspective. He's only pretending to get close with her but I feel like that shot was to show how he was observing her, like a sort of quality check but also to know how to play her into his trap next. We see Steve's upper body and only lower portion of his face, which is a bit out of focus for this shot, so it's not quite a pov but it keeps him in the back of your mind (peripheral view in this case) while the focus is on Noah, but on her externally. Not making eye contact with the camera and also him wearing red and her blue. The contrast and underlying associations keep you as the viewer on your toes juuuuust enough while they feel the growing intimacy. Just my thoughts and I know its tldr A WHOLE YEAR LATER, but it fascinated me enough to want to talk about anyway 😅

      Also also, the ugly dress I think was done on purpose. Like, obviously, it's a movie but I mean on Steve's part. Man KNOWS how to appeal to women and what they do in some cases to try and appeal back. I feel like he had the impression that this might in some part be "too good to be true" and if she said she loved the dress, even as uncoordinated as it is with those sneakers, he'd know she was acting. Her pleasant enough but unemotionally committed response was enough to be honest but kind.

    It is amazing that so many horror movies have been released the last year and a bit but with work and studies it is a bit overwhelming narrowing down the actual good ones to watch. After seeing your tweets about this and getting a few minutes in (and finding out it was on disney plus lol) I watched it tonight after finishing my final business law exam ever and it was great- what I wanted to see and how I wanted to see it play out, but it still managed to surprise me a few times! And gorgeous to watch- we love orange

    I think the end credits scene with the raw meat in the middle, the spreading pool of blood and the group of billionaires around it implies that all they did was cut off one head of the hydra. Steve and his complicit wife are dead but the shadowy underbelly of oligarchs who demand this cannibal delivery still exists and Steve can't be their only supplier. It implies there will always be more evil men out there, even when you snuff out one. In my mind the wife reminds me of women who enable husbands who are neo Nazis or white supremacist's, she's complicit in what Steve is doing, and at first it was for her own survival, but she's grown accustomed to this rich lifestyle and would throw another woman under the bus to preserve it. I think the reason Steve mostly doesn't sleep with these women is because it would humanize them and he sees them as meat or cattle. There's a lot of layers to this movie that add a dark satire that really makes it stand out from other cannibal movies.

    I kind of took the fact that Penny didn't have more removed was that the way that he was selling the meat was that the client would choose who they wanted to eat. Also healing takes a while, so it could be that he wants the victims to not be on any medications which could affect the quality

    I just watched the movie today (Monday,April 18) and really it was great but one insane thing out of the blue for me as a Marvel Meta fan, Sebastian Stan's character's name is Steve and he wears blue turtlenecks. Basically a combination of Chris Evans and Tom Hiddleston that is a reincarnation of Hannibal Lecter but beautifully well crafted by the director. How insane is that other than the Title card coming in after 30 minutes of the opening

    regarding his wife - i don't think she was a former victim, i think that turning the cannibalism into a business was her idea. i got the impression they'd been together from a very young age (since he mentions having started eating people at 19, i thought maybe while he was in medical school) and she'd eventually given her leg up. the personal touches he added to each meat package and the fact that i think she says to the driver to put his body on ice makes me think she was running the business end of things even if she didn't participate in eating humans herself.

    • @jakejancook
      @jakejancook 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I initially thought the Asian guy she's with at the end was, her boss or connection to a static organisation, but she does say 'we should put him on ice' suggesting she's the higher up potentially
      I do think however. She seemed worried over the aging of her face, kinda signaled for the friend to leave her house as husband arrived, is missing a limb, and I got the impression he was prepared to replace his wife which makes it plausible his previous wife was a victim too

    • @82Jaster
      @82Jaster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I'm certainly on the side that she was a previous victim. When he mentions that he started eating people at 19 he also mentions how it was a part of him that he couldn't share with anyone else. While obviously he's not going to bring up his wife if she were around back then, the feeling I got is that Noa had gotten him to drop his guard and he was being genuine there. He goes on to explain how started looking around to see if there were others like him and that's where the business came from. So I think that Ann got in good with him by convincing him that she'd help him with that business. And an extra element that she could add is that women often trust other women (this is what she was counting on at the end with Noa), so she could act as bait for more victims for him. In return she'd get to keep her life. There are a lot of real life stories of women helping men by luring in women for them to abuse/kill.
      I do agree with you on the idea that she didn't eat people. And that's why Noa's angle worked so well. His real passion was eating people, and he just managed to turn that into a business. Finding someone who also liked to do that was even more desirable than what he had with Ann. Of course Noa was just trying to get him to drop his guard low enough so that she could attack and escape while Ann was genuine her desire to just go right along with him. Which is why in the end Ann was telling the guy to toss his body on ice. She saw how lucrative it was and was willing to keep it going as long as she could.

    • @idunno3370
      @idunno3370 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@jakejancook she only wanted mollie to leave cause she knew nothing about her. unlike noa and the other victims, they don't know if mollie has family and loved ones who would look for her, they don't know if she had backup, if she was risky, which is why they were willing to let her go. once she caught them in the lie they were put in a tight spot and that's the only reason they knocked her out. the wife didn't care abt mollie at all, she just cared about not getting caught (especially in her own home with her kids and neighbrors nearby)

    • @jakejancook
      @jakejancook 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@idunno3370 I think if you rewatch it the wife initially signifies for her to leave because her husband is home. The vibe to me is that she didn't want them to meet which is either because she, as a previous victim, wants to avoid her becoming one, or she wants to stop her husband seeing that someone is onto them
      I think you're right in that they was only willing to let her go because they don't know anything about her but I'm more interested in the wife's thoughts at that moment
