New Tank 300 Hybrid Review - We take it off-road and accidentally get it stuck

- The all-new GWM Tank 300 is a bold move by the increasingly dominant Chinese automaker. Following the massive success in South Africa of the Haval brand, GWM SA has launched an entrant into the fiercely competitive Adventure SUV segment.
The segment has always been dominated by the Toyota Fortuner, but the latest Ford Everest and Isuzu MU-X are compelling offerings.
The pricing of the new Tank 300 in South Africa undercuts all of its rivals by some margin, and with handsome looks, a rather exceptional and a punchy powertrain, GWM have given it every chance of stealing away some market share.
In this video, Jacob Moshokoa drives the new Tank on-road and offroad, and unfortunately the shoot ended rather prematurely when we accidentally sank it into some awfully sticky and deep mud.

To be fair you set the car up for failure driving Offroad with those tyres, it also didn’t seem like you engaged the correct technology to give it a fighting chance and you’ll need to take advantage of momentum in some areas. Seems like a great car, I don’t blame Jacob as he did say he’s not an expert, however, I’d not be happy had I been the manufacturer
Was glad to see Jacob review the Tank. Dissapointed in how little he knows about this car. Even dared took it off road without utilizing the Diff-lock... uhm, how do you talk 4x4 without the slightest mention of diff lock? This unfair judgement towards the Chinese, and prematurely concluding that their products are shxt is the main reason western nations are struggling to control china today. Elon Musk laughed at the idea of BYD competing against Tesla, today Tesla struggles to outsell BYD -- simply because BYD offers better cars for cheaper.
Totally agree. The Tank 300 tested here in Australia is judged extremely capable off road. The dude clearly misrepresented the capability of this vehicle. 😢
Please re review the Tank by David Taylor or someone who is more capable of knowing how to drive an off-road vehicle without being in a rush..very poor review and I doubt GWM will give this channel any future off road vehicles again..

The car has a myriad of offroad features and you didnt use any of them, got stuck in a place any car would get stuck, and the car protected itself from water ingress.
I would be very upset if I was the manufacturer who loaned you the car.
guys if you want o really Know how this car is check out the Australian review, its far better, and the do a proper offroad test, this is a really capable vehicle,
The problem is driver not the vehicle. The vehicle is equipped with low range transfer case, front and rear diff locks. Only sand mode was mentioned for driving in such challenging muddy conditions.
Not sure about this review Jacob, a lot of upskilling needed on your part. No use of locking diffs/ transfer case and no one knows which driving mode you are on. Pls compare city VS open road VS off road. I have seen this car submerged a couple of times but not stuck.

The thing is it's only the rear wheels spinning/ struggling. Was it in two wheel drive mode? Watched some Aussie review and they show us how the low range, diff locks and different drive mode works etc and Aussie do know their stuff. Here on the other hand is doing off roading with "hill decent" and only??? But guess it's entertaining to see any new product fail I suppose, especially a Chinese products? And that's how they get more view perhaps.
Please do some off-road training especially on what modes and functions to use. It will help with the reviews.

I dont blame the driver or the car. Even with the diff locks engaged and low range on, that car would still have been stuck n it wasn't coming out ever from that mud. Anyone who drives in these conditions knows what the real problem clearly was. It's very evident in the video. The problem isn't the car but rather the tyres. It's very easy to underestimate the difference tyres make when driving in wet muddy off-road conditions. Simply put, a Jimny with Mud tarrin tyres will outperform a Land cruiser with road tyres.
why didn't he switch to mud mode when the rain came? diff lock? he mentioned specks and used none of them, and the tyre were non-off-road tyres...this one deserves a retry
Now this is an interesting review, the ending is a bit sad but also informative about the shutting down. He did say there's no instructor though. Looks like a fun car to experiemnt and avoid that last part.
There’s a way to unlock P gear position in an emergency. Page 114 in the manual.

That offroad track is no challenge for a Suzuki Jimny. I don't own a Jimny but man, that Tank sunk like a Tank.

The Austrailian reviews proved that the Tank is actually a very capable offroader. More should have been done here to select the right modes and to engage difflocks.
Jacob is clueless period especially with detail of information his reviews are rushed time constraints hence lack of clarity to learn the car first instead of such a poor reviewing of a Tank

This is a Chinese G-Wagon. Really enjoyed this review and I'm glad that Jacob made this car get stuck in the mud, for me that really proved that the hybrid is kak off road and would be very expensive to fix. I understand why hybrid bakkies don't work well off road now even though they are slowly making an appearance now. What happened to Ciro as well, been missing his "HELLO" Intro's.
I dnt think anyone with a hybrid is going to go offroading and Tank should have done a better job of insulating the hybrid unit
It's actually not kak unfortunately Jacob's off-road skills are kak but if you really want to see its true performance go check out the Australian reviews.. Though tbh anyone who buys a hybrid version of this car will never take it off-road
I love this beast in every way. When I test drive this, its like a crossover and you don't feel that it is huge. The only thing that hinders me are price and fuel consumption (even in hybrid formed). Btw, GWM China already announced the PHEV (Hi4T) version of this.
I am glad the question I always had about these off-road hybrids has been answered. This mud test should now be standard.

For the way those back seats fold down love that it is a truly fold flat seat, everybody always says oh its a fold flat seat they just lifted the boot floor to make it look flat. love this car, would definatly have one, of to the lotto counter at Spar for me.

Not gonna lie, I am impressed but this would sell more at around the 600k mark. 800k is a bit steep for the unknown reliability and support

You'll need shares in a fuel supplier to be able to run it.
It should've had a diesel engine and the price is out by R200k.
That 12l/100km is what my 3.6l Jeep Wrangler does in town and I’d much rather enjoy my Jeep than this, resale value on this after 4 years is gonna suck
Think this needs to go back to the drawing board from an under carriage perspective, better tyres are definitely needed and also they need to take that fly by wire into account. What if it is raining severly on the road in our daily cities, is it then going to shut down?

There is a reason the older type 4x4's are called 4x4. These new fancy looking / spec vehicles will not fair nearly as well like the previous generation, regardless of brand.
After the Tank was Sank it clearly confirmed that my Fortuner was the correct option. No Electric faults. No fly by wire gearbox. No getting stuck and waiting for the car to wake up. 🤣🤣🤣

this means that crossing a low-level bridge in slight flood is a no go! the vehicle shuts its self off if the bottom chassis gets wet!!! No thanks.

What happen to low range and diff locks? Australian reviews have different results much better results, even for the HEV.

If you’re going to test a vehicle off-road, is it too much to ask that you use a driver who knows what they’re doing in said environment ? That said, his lack of off-road driving awareness did expose a flaw for the hybrid. I would still get a Tank, but the middle option which is petrol turbo, and has locking front and rear diffs. Don’t think the reviewer even know what those do, unfortunately.
reminds me of the Ssang Yong Korando - loads of peeps bought that as a lifestyle vehicle too when really they wanted to own a G-Wagon ...
Begs the question... Why are we not getting the Ultra Lux Hev in SA? it has the same Off-Roading capabilities as the mid spec non-hybrid variant Ultra Lux 2.0T.

Honestly, the aversge guy only needs Toyota's 2.8 GD6 or Isuzu's 3.0 TDi in an offroafer.
AWD is not 4x4, next time put it in 4x4.
AWD can be better than 4x4 I know this with Subaru I underestimated that car but it got me surprised but ofcourse I can not compare Gwm brand with Subaru

Loving these Asian cars. But eish R800k is a bit of a challenge for a new entry into the market.
Biggest issue for me is the petrol engine. Its unforgivable not to have diesel offering for a serious offroader.
Jacob you are doing serious damage to the channel credibility.The Tank did not sink "accidentally" but it sank through "incompetence and ignorance".That looked like off road track near Melkbos, and GWM are also at fault for not giving you some basic off road instruction before unless you said you are a off-road fundi,and you know the old saying."If it doesn't work than read the user manual"!
I still have to see a Tank on the roads around Cape Town besides the Orange Tank parked outside GWM in Cape Town..Could this be the same vehicle you tanked/sanked J,and some poor sod is going to buy that as a demo one day.Stick to Rangers,Suzukis and Polos Jakob..Very poor effort indeed.
I think this guy is talking absolute rubbish about the water "The GWM TANK 300 has a maximum climb gradient rating of 70%, and all models, including the hybrid version, have a maximum wading depth of 700 mm."
This was not a good review at all unfortunately. How can you get someone to review an off-road car who is not experienced in off-roading. This makes very little sense, if any at all. Please do better guys. Never had a poor review before from this channel but if we dont be honest, we cant improve

That fuel consumption is really bad! And you say the hybrid motor only comes in when you're driving slowly, but it should assist at higher speeds as well AND - the whole point of having a hybrid vehicle - it should regenerate energy by braking with the electric motor at any speed. So in theory, the hybrid system should definitely help its efficiency. So 12.8L/100km with the hybrid system is terrible and indicates poor engineering to me which makes it a no from me.
Not very well prepared for the film Jacob, and the editing is a bit rough, but very informative, thanks. That said, you will pay way over 2Mil for the same specs in a non Chinese brand. Good value.. whould I buy one?Probably not.

Hill descent looked horrible and those tires had no chance, if it had tired that are a bit more tailored more to off roading.

But isn't comparing this Tank to a Fortuner or Everest a bit disingenuous? The other 2 are family SUVs with offroad capability. The Tank 300 is an adventure SUV, with a lot of comfort creatures to fill in as a pseudo family SUV every now and then. Isn't this competing with the BAIC BJ-something (not to be disparaging, but i forget the number) and Jeep Wrangler? (Am so far removed from that world, don't even know if this is still available in SA) Two very divergent use cases, no? Even size-wise the Tank doesn't match up to the other two, no? If the comparison is based on price alone, then maybe also add other competitors, like a newly built 5 bedroom house in rural KZN, a baby race horse, a very sad and run down parking spot in Camps bay and, I dunno, er, Jacob Zuma's other time piece, no? Am i wrong?

Does the Tank have any diff locks? That would be the main deal breaker for most who would want to venture off road in the Tank. Nice vehicle though, and well priced 👏🏾

Is it Diesel or Petrol? You mentioned twice the 2,0 litre turbo hybrid engine, but not if it is petrol or diesel? Does it have low range? If it is a Fortuner or Everest competator does it have the tools? Diff lock? Bad review from someone that doesn't know what it is to be a motoring journalist! As a journalist you need to be able to drive vehicles off road with out almost killing it by drivers error! Half baked facts in this review!
Why do motor journalists always seem not so sure of themselves when doing a review for a Chinese vehicle. We should realise that with the Chinese car makers hitting the international market with euro driven design we can say that the Chinese car makers are getting it right. The only issue is that South Africa n's like many other countries need to change their attitude towards Chinese vehicles. They value for money and gives the buyer more options. German and Japanese cars are not always better. They also rip buyers off buy charging for many extras whereas many Chinese makers like Korean makers give everything as a full package. Time to change the old fashion verkramp mindset. Glad you admitted that it was your driving not the vehicle that got you stuck.

Chinese vehicles have not proven themselves yet, so don't come call us verkramp. Show me an old Cherry or a JAC that's a few years old. I saw a JAC doubke cab the other day. Rusted all over. And speaking about Cherry. They left, now they're back again. You expect me to throw my hard earned money after a brand that can just decide to pick up & leave whenever they feel like it? The big manufacturers like Toyota dip their vehicles in galvanising before they're painted. That's why they don't rust like the Chinese crap. There's always a reason why some things are 'cheap'🤭
Chinese cars are cheap for now to attract customers. When they manage to establish their brands, they will be pricey. Kia and Hunday used to be cheap when they started. Now they are more expensive than Suzuki which is literally Toyota without badge.
