SPRING COME, WEATHER GETTING WARMER, IT IS GOOD TIME TO START GROWING EPIPHYLLUM.
I HAVE ALOT OF CUT LEAVES, ANYONE WHO NEED TO START GROWING EPIPHYLLUM FROM THE LEAVES, LET ME KNOW. ( in US only)
This is the fastest and the most effective way to propagate Epiphyllum or Orchid Cactus from the leaves. I have developed this method by incident. It happens in early morning of Spring this year, when I watered my orchid cactus, I broke one leaf with the bud ready to blossom. I felt so bad , so I brought it inside the sunroom, and put it in plastic food saver with little of water, hoping that this bud will blossom, but it wilt and fell off.
I still leave that leaf in water about 4 weeks, then one day by my curiosity, I take it the water and check that leaf , I was surprised, it formed few roots. So I left it in the water few more weeks, it formed a lot more roots, I took it out the water and plant it small plastic pot, it grows very healthy.
After that incident, I started to study by cut few orchid cactus leaves and observed the process .
You can see in my video, this new method have very high successful rate. Should do this new method in the Summer.
Now I am very happy to share with all of you, who enjoy growing Epiphyllum or Orchid Cactus.
I would love to get feedback from all of you.
    PEACE
Các bạn Việt Nam, nếu các bạn yêu thích Hoa Nhật Quỳnh , mình sẻ chỉ dẫn tận tình , cặn kẻ.

Hi 🙂 ! I have an Orchid Cacti/Cactus. I originally saw one in FULL bloom @ a Nursery. It was Breathtaking!!! The gentleman told me it wasn't for sale 😩. Anyway, I asked him for a small piece of a leaf. It was about 4 inches long. Well, I planted it in 1993 & it grew vigorously. It is a very, very, very Happy plant!! In 2011, I lost my mom 😔. In April/May of that year my Cactus had 3 Beautiful flowers. I believe my mom sent them to me 😇😇. It has flowered every year since. I haven't seen any buds on it yet this Spring, maybe it is resting. I propogated two Beautiful plants last year from cuttings, they are doing VERY well. TYFS!!! 👍👍☺️

What soil mix are you using? I have found a mix of equal parts azalea/camelia mix, orchid bark and perlite makes for very happy epis that want to bloom a lot. They will limp along in just about anything but acidic well drained airy soil makes for well blooming plants. Also they like a few hours of morning sun and occasional fertilizing with cactus or half strength tomato fertilizer (not houseplant fertilizer it has too much nitrogen)

@@atomicskull6405 GREAT information! 🥰. ThnQ for that. Sad to say ☹️, I NEED to repot it. I have hesitated because it is SO BIG!!!!! I'm planning to use Cacti/Cactus Soil. I use "Orchid" Fertilizer.

I tried this method, and it really worked! I cut many at once, put them all in a clear container, left them at my front porch. About 2 weeks, I see roots growing from the bottom!

Hello: I tried the water method and it really worked. A piece of my epiphyllum had to be cut off and I was heartbroken to throw it away. Using you method was wonderful. Please continue to make more videos, as I am new to the species. Thank you so much from Canada.

      Good morning Rena Daen,
      Thanks for watching my videos...
I have many viewers asking about to put cutting leaves in the water right away or let them dry few weeks before put them in water.
Either way is ok, but if you let the cutting leaves dry few weeks, 4-5 weeks then put them in the water,,,then roots will form faster and NO ROTTEN PROBLEMS......
My experience, I cut leaves in October 2018, let them dry in green house until March 2019,,,,,i was in Vietnam for 4 months,,,after I got back , I put them in the water,,,,,( Oregon, cold winter) ,,they have formed healthy roots and no rotten problems.......it warm in Oregon now, I just plant them in the soil......
Good luck and have fun with your project..
      Thanks again.

Epis don't have real leaves just stems, the flat leaf-like straps are still just stems. The actual leaves are the nodes along the margins where flowers and new stems emerge (these are greatly reduced leaf nodes)

That was a great video and I learned a lot. Thank you very much. I have an epiphyllum that I've had for about 7 years and when it blooms, it has massive cream coloured flowers.
As it was getting somewhat unruly, having taken over my coffee table, I decided to separate it about a month ago. It was a no-brainer and I divided it into 4 smaller plants and
kept one for myself. Two friends and my brother all ended up with a sibling. In the fall, I'll try your method of propagation to create some more babies and pass them along. I admired
how you were able to provide your cacti with an opportunity to grow upright. I will have to try that. Thanks again.

Hello there, thanks for watching my videos...
You can try propagate zigzag or fish bone cactus in two ways:
1- cut the leaves in to 8” pieces, let them wait dry about 4-5 weeks, then plant in small container. That is OLD METHOD.
2- cut the leaves 8” pieces, put them in food saver, in my video.........This is the best way to propagate cactus.
Good Luck and have fun with your project.
You can check my TH-cam channel: THIEN NHAT QUYNH. I Have several videos about cactus.

I have also become enthusiastic about the multiplication of this Epiphyllum species.
I started experimenting on cutting soil, in peat pots, on hydro granules with a bottom of water, on Vermiculite, on perlite, on a bottom of moss, in a terrarium, under plastic or glass bell jar and finally on water in a warm, light place without direct sunlight. . The latter makes the cuttings to root quickly, less rotten than with cuttings on sand, but water does change periodically. After rooting, plant the plant cuttings in a soil mix and place in a light, warm place and spray and give minimal water until new growth develops, then lighten the cuttings. Preferably in a window on north or east (gives the most flowers) or on the west behind shade lace or patterned glass. Smallest cuttings made of approximately 2x3 cm successfully developing into large plants.

Thanks for sharing, in the method of put cutting in the water, you should change the water twice a week, and some time shaking the water to give the cutting some oxygen.....

@ Thiet Nahn - When the leaves are cut into V shape do you allow some time to dry prior to soaking in water ? I already transplanted my first one but want to propagate many so I will lile to know because I would think freshly cut into water mean rot...the clear sap should dry- yes! Love your videos just subscribed 👍. Thank you!

    • @THIENNHATQUYNH
      @THIENNHATQUYNH  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hello WJ Miranda, thanks for watching my videos and subscribe...
Either way will work, if you put cutting leaves in water right away after cut V shape, result will be the same if you let them dry few weeks or few months....
Most people let them air dry few weeks, because they will plant them in the soil.....( cutting will be heal, and callus)
So they will not be rotten....percent of successful is 70% max ,,,,,
In the water right away, results could be 99% ,,,,
Your choice, or maybe you can try both way, then you can find out,,,,,,just fun project...
Thanks again for watching my videos.

I have some very long cuttings but don't want to split them because I hear that it will take longer for them to flower if they are small. I'm hoping I can root them as they are, though I don't know if cutting the base in a v shape will speed things up. The skin seems very tough so it might impede root growth?
