Abbeville La is the town. It looks basically the same. The courthouse /pharmacy/alleyway(behind the bank of Abbeville) is all called “the square”. The school from the beginning scene is still there and call VC for Vermillion Catholic school.
I always thought it was interesting when he holds up the jar, this is a rear screen projection. It’s basically a fake hand holding a jar in front of a projected image of the character. Most of the time, that technique was used for visual effects before green screen became cheap and popular. It makes the shot really creepy.
Actually it's not a projected scene behind the foreground. It's just the way that film looks when you have a lower depth of field. The background looks a little softer in focus because the foreground needs to be in focus for the shot of the fake hand. You're right that it's a fake hand as you can see the control mechanism for the blob coming out of the hand to animate the blob. But it's all mechanical effects, no green screen or projections or anything like CGI.
That may have been a fake hand…but, to me, it was effective in creating the image of someone who had suffered full-thickness burns in various parts of his body. Those of us who saw this movie from beginning to end remember how the reverend looked before the climactic scene with the whole town versus the blob. The blob formed a tentacle that plugged a flamethrower, causing it to explode. The agent carrying the flamethrower was incinerated on the spot-but the ensuing explosion caused the preacher’s vestments to catch fire, too. IMHO, that was one of the saddest parts of the movie. Here’s a faithful preacher, wearing a Roman collar-surrounded by chaos, death, and danger-literally in the thick of it-and he continues to preach the Word to anyone who might still hear him…only to suffer full-thickness burns and lose an eye. I’m thinking maybe that’s why he needed a belt after his sermon and during the hymn of invitation at the end of service. One, because the alcohol might’ve helped him with his pain; two, there are those who use alcohol to forget; and three-even tho he remains faithful in his endeavors to get the Word out…injuries like his have a tendency to change people. Chances are, he wasn’t quite the same at the end of the movie as he was before he was accidentally burned.
I been waiting for the lord to give him a sign too damn long. The sequel won't happen until I'm old..sad days since I was a few month old when this was released.
