- MLB commissioner Rob Manfred sits down with Karl Ravech to discuss the investigation of the Houston Astros for their sign-stealing scandal and when he became aware of the alleged cheating. (1:56) Manfred explains why it took so long for MLB to investigate this, even before former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers spoke out, and the biggest challenges he faced looking into the matter. (4:48) Manfred goes into the decision to send warnings to the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox in 2017, why it never reached those players. (14:06) Manfred contends that an owner of a team has the ultimate responsibility for what goes on in their franchise and explains why he decided not to punish Astros owner Jim Crane. (17:55) Manfred responds to talks swirling around on how many are upset that the players were not punished. There is no integrity in MLB.
There never has been integrity in sports in general. Teams have been cheating since Adam and Eve times. The oldest RECORDED instance (baseball) of a team attempting to steal signs dates back to 1876, when the Hartford Dark Blues hid a person in a shack to tip off their hitters when the pitcher would throw a curveball. In 1897, the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, had a backup catcher hide in a clubhouse beyond center field with a binocular and a telegraph that he used to alert the manager to what pitch the opposing catcher was calling. In 1900, Pearce Chiles, a coach for the Phillies, was caught standing on a box with electric wires that relayed to him coded messages about what pitch was coming, which he relayed to the batters by stomping on the ground. As late as 2001, members of the 1951 New York Giants admitted to stealing signs against the Brooklyn Dodgers using a telescope 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ to win the National League that season. Believe me, there hasn't been a pause of this type of activity. This is a league wide problem. The Astros aren't the only ones. Other teams haven't been snitched on by a "Mike Fiers" and the Astros have just been made the scapegoats of this all.

This was Manfred’s moment to really put his stamp on his legacy as MLB commissioner. Reminds me of Adam Silver dealing with the Donald Sterling situation, but unlike Silver who set a great example of how to deal with corruption/scandal in your sport Manfred went the Rodger Goddell route and dropped the ball. As a baseball fan(and admittedly a dodgers fan) I don’t think I’ll ever get over how badly he has handled this. Obviously the real bad guys are the players and coaches who participated in this and basically stole a ring from the Dodgers and a potential ring from the Yankees, but Manfred will forever be remembered for how soft he was on them.
I'm not a baseball fan and watching how this all panned out even made me angry. Ultimately, if you're a sports fan, you're supposed to respect the win, even if it was your rival or even if your team was hurt, etc. No excuses.
This guy just gave a reason to demean the win because he doesn't respect the symbolic value of trophies- what it means to those competing and their fans and all fans of the game. This guy has stamped 2 cheating champions in history. What a calamity.... I feel for the Dodgers, dawg.

54 years of loving baseball coming to end for me. It's been a struggle for many reasons but I've hung on but this is too much. Letting the players skate free with blatant cheating and letting the astros steal a championship just makes competition a farce. Teams will just move on to another way to cheat because how can they not? The players union will protect them. Manfred has no real power as he is obviously being controlled by the owners and the players union. The MLB needed to come down hard on this to protect the integrity fo the game and they took the easy way out and basically spit in the fans faces. Luckily I hadn't renewed my MLB subscription so I now have to find another sport to fill my summers. Thanks for the memories.

As a baseball fan I’m deeply offended. One word “Accountability” there is none. We the fans and players were cheated of the integrity of the game. We seem to forget why and how “baseball” started. Using the precedent that no title has ever been stripped before has the most logical follow up question in journalism: Well no other championship team has had such a well documented CHEATING scandal been revealed about them while theyre still in the league.
