Very good idea, for the exception of one thing... the fuel line. The air moving inside that case is super hot and my melt the zip tie and also the fuel hose. Something to think about, but you'll know if you start to see smoke billowing out of the heater case. I like the case idea though.
Yeah keeping a eye on it, I've been able to use it now about 5 or so nights all night long and knock on wood no issues. We used to use little zip ties on nitro rc cars with the soft green line, they run super hot... all the new heaters out now use a hard line with black larger diameter hose on the ends with a proper hose clamp. I'll keep a eye on it and adjust as needed. Getting closer to the end of the cold weather so age over summer too could effect the soft line as well
I did this. Mine melted and caught my cat on fire when the diesel sprayed everywhere. He ran down the street but I never caught him he was wearing his favorite Christmas sweater. I got new carpet too after the fire. Thank you for the video
You must have a fuel leak problem with cap facing side ways. If you organized it better. You have a room for a 20ah LFP battery. I built two waterproof case heaters. One inside of the Ridgid case and the other inside the Apache 4800 case. They both have batteries inside.
No fuel issue as I run it on its side. Carrying it it does, I have a follow up video for that. I’m going to do an entirely different setup here soon, I want something more apart of the truck… I have some thoughts, but I never considered onboard power. Interesting

When I used to build nitro RC cars that's what we'd use on the fuel lines, I suspect it's about the same line pressure. Haha I need to do more off the cuff stuff like that, that was a genuine reaction from her

Yeah a setup like this you could easily do U bolts... or depending on the rack, slide in bolts into channels, drill holes in the case and bolt it down that way
Mostly noise. The pump on the hollow metal box was loud loud. And with it being on its side it’s easier to toss into my basket or on top of my totes. Vs when the fuel line and exhaust I would have to be more careful where it was placed
Going to add a comment on how the fuel hose is run into the heater with modification. Concerns with leakage due to hrst from th4 unit melting the hose. With factory configurations your far enough away from cooling fins to cause this issue. Shouldnt be a fire hazard with diesel. But do keep an eye put on it and keep some extra fuel line with parts so you can do field rair and not left freezing.
Yeah so far so good. Ran many nights now, no issues. Doesn’t get hot at all, not even a little. BUT… I have noticed and I noticed last weekend… the exhaust is a lot more “sooty” I know running it on low and do this, but it’s noticeably more then it ever was before. I don’t know if it’s from running it on it’s side…. But I’ll keep my eye on that
Question for the board. If the hearer is going to be permanently installed inside the Apache Is it necessary to keep the pladtic housing on the heater? I should be starting mine next week. I love the tank inside the box. My design requires that it be able to either stand on its side or flat, so its probably not going to work for me
I think for safety sake I’d keep the housing on it… with the wiring in there and the tank in there… that exposed heat would be sketch. If I were to do it again, I might design it so it could stand upright and run. Even though the heater “can” be on its side, I don’t know how much it likes to
Mine needs to be portable and versatile so As planned it will usually be standing up, but there will maybe necessary to lay it down For the same reason I didn't want the exhaust pipe on the same side as the heat duct so I looped it back to the other side. Also wanted to add an internal battery but you temp measurements tell me that's not happening. Like I said Mine is still in my head I have all the parts and pieces but I'm doing an apache water proof boom box for my sister at the moment
At the time I was looking for something in a case so it would be a bit more durable, and the metal case was loud with the fuel pump I was hoping this would quiet it down. And this would also let me run the intake into my tent so it wouldn’t be pulling cold air it would be pulling warm air… so more efficient
You could have just bought that one in a plastic box. Lolz. And you still useing the plastic fuel line everybodys says to change for fuel efficiency and burning. But Mabey less fuel is better.??? Lots of guys that just buy a single unit. Want the cover you just took apart lol. I would like the cadge or cover you took apart. . Lol
That’s interesting! When I ordered this, it was a totally different unit on Amazon and this is what I got shipped. And it’s worked out ok. But the fuel line and lack of filter I was thinking.. hmm odd, but… oh well. There is a local company who’s selling them in the same case for $800 wtf. I have about $200 into this haha. But I am seeing more now that have accomplished this from the get go. Oh well haha sometimes the fun is doing it yourself. Hopefully just being able to run it on a lower setting and getting plenty of heat will keep it from burning through a tank of fuel each night
Getting the air intake inside the box will also increase fuel efficiency. You will need a vent for the box so it’s fed fresh air but the warmer air being sewn in for the combustion cycle will increase the efficiency
It’s not….toooooooo bad. Definitely doesn’t bother my wife or kids. But once you start in with getting nice heat, it’s easy to get all bougie and want it warm AND quiet too haha

The only reason I went that route was transporting it. It just sits in the bed of the truck with my “German shedder” the mud, dust, hair is nuts. I don’t know if you noticed when I showed the stock case I was going to drill out… brutal. The blast gates gave me a nice lip to clamp on to and by keeping the doors shut should keep most the trail grime out 🙏
With the 2 pin plug are you still able to use the wireless remote that come with the units to control the heater without needing to open the case up? Dope setup btw, it's inspired me to get myself one of these heaters and attempt my own build. Thanks
Yep, I don't know how good the range will be since it's inside the case. But now I can keep it closer to me vs outside on the ground, so it should be just fine. That's awesome, glad to hear it!
So, so far not at all. BUT I am syphoning out all the fuel before I transport. But I'm going to either make or find a cap that has a proper 1 way valve on it to let it breathe and not leak. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah, we will see how it does! At least it’s not getting moved at all. I saw a build the other day with the fuel tank on the lid and the unit was away from the wall, so every time you open your line was moving back and fourth. I can see that getting brittle and leaking

I'm currently trying to decide on using one of these or a Ridgid tool box I currently already have but am leaning towards one of these for the space savings (my XJ is already packed to the gills with gear on trips lol). Also gonna do like you and run a separate fuel tank so if I do have the heater box inside the vehicle for transport I'm not sloshing diesel everywhere lol. One quick point on the fuel line is maybe get some of the hard plastic fuel line to replace the green (I hear people have issues with the green soft line) and then use about 2" of larger diameter rubber fuel line as a "fitting" with hose clamps on either end, slide one end on the hard line you cut inside the case and then slide the hard plastic fuel line inside and butted up against the hard metal line inside of the larger rubber line and tighten hose clamps on either end. Hopefully that made some kind of sense LOL, CheaperJeeperTV has a video of him doing the fuel line cut just like you and explains it much better and visually if you wanna check that out. Also if you're on facebook there are a number of groups dedicated to these cheap lil heaters where I've found tons of great info/ideas. Thanks again man and sorry for the long comment here lol!
The fuel line on mine must have been from a early design. I've had it now a little while, all and I mean ALL the current heaters I see have the hard line and black rubber tubing. Definitely keeping a eye on it. So far so good haha Yeah if you already have a box, and are not using it, hard to pass on that. Hope it works out for you!!

@ChambersFamilyOverland I use Milwaukee packout for my truck ( build in process), and I probably use the Milwaukee packout large box for this project.. mount to my roof cab with the Milwaukee packout floor mount... like that the heater are closer to my rtt and the pipe go to the rtt are 3 feet max ... and less pipe outside they make more efficient...

Great video, love the different ideas. I would keep a close eye on the fuel line inside the heat chamber, there was a reason they run metal to the outside. Another thought was to get an extra fuel tank cap that isn't vented just for travel to keep from leaking (perhaps a different color to help you to remember to switch back to vented when using)...

The things I didn't consider are things like... in the basket to keep it close to the tent, I can actually feel the ticking of the pump transfer through the rack. So I moved it to the totes on top of the cab, but refueling is insane, no real good way to do that... so this weekend might try inside the bed, as long as the fumes from the exhaust dont come up to us.... always something haha. I'm with you on the cap.... might either modify this or just find one with a proper 1 way valve

you should burn test that piece you cut out see what temp it melts
