I used this lens over eight year and I sold it due to back/front focusing issues (I was unable to used it on my Canon EOS 3). In order to work properly I had to perform micro adjustments on my Canon EOS 6. The lens is pretty soft at f/1.4, many times I had to convert to B&W in order to get a decent images. If you stopped down f/2.8 or f/4 was very decent. At f/8 to f/11 was very good. This lens dropped in price on eBay due to it's softness wide open and back/front focusing issues.

The internal part of that lens is easy to clean ;)

When I unified my 35mm and digital FF kit on EF mount a few years back, I opted for the 45mm Tamron VC F1.8 and I am repeatedly shocked at how good that lens is. I love that it's just that little bit wider, and the VC is just amazing for film after dark. My other prime is the 35mm IS USM F2. I've never had a stretch where my GAS was this satisfied for so long:-) They're only 10mm apart, but so different.

    Nice!
I enjoy myself a 50mm 1.4 on my 35mm camera, from the lovely canon 50mm 1.4 fd to the equally nice canon eos 50mm 1.4 one for my SLR and dslr.

My favorite is the, (Digital) Eos 180 macro, (film) FD 55 3.5 macro, Both lenses I went through school with and used extensively. Ya going through digital photography school with a 180 was challenging but it was my only lens at the time in the Eos mount lol.

I bought a used Nikon D7000 because it came with this lens. I never used the 7000, I sold it to help fund a D4. I absolutely love this lens, I have used it on D500, D780 D800 D4. I have just bought a D5 with a 12580 shutter count and can't wait to see how the 50mm performs on it.

I love this lens. It makes a great bokeh lens on full frame and an excellent portrait lens for aps-c.
I lost my original in a flood several years ago and immediately replaced it with a 2nd hand one off e-bay.
Unfortunately, when I last went to use it , it would not communicate with any of my bodies.
I will hang onto if until my next trip to Thailand. I have discovered an excellent camera/lens repair shop in Chiangmai and I will see if they can work their magic on it.

I am not surprised. One of my favorite lenses is the Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC for Sony/Minolta A mount APS-C sensors - basically the nifty 50 (45mm, but close enough) for APS-C sized sensors. I picked it up on a whim after a colleague gifted me an old Sony A200, because it was cheap - and fast. It's the camera/lens combination featured in my profile picture these days - that says a lot, I think.
For film, I do enjoy using vintage lenses with all kinds of flaws, but the Canon EOS 50mm f1.8 STM and 40mm f2.8 are my most used lenses.
I'm currently stocked up as far as film cameras go, but for digital, I have had good experiences with fixed Olympus Zuiko lenses on digicams, so I'm looking in to getting a digital Olympus camera with interchangeable Zuiko lenses - it's just not as accessible as Canon and Nikon cameras and lenses, so it might not happen - especially not with the current challenges earning a fair wage in my line of work.

my favourite lens is either my Nikon 50mm 1.8 G, or the 70-200 2.8 VR, both are sharp and I can use them on my D700, F100, or my Z5 mirrorless which has the F mount adaptor as a permanent fixture basically. the 50 is light and small and with the Z5 makes a perfext package to just carry anywhere

None of my cameras except one came with a kit lens, thus I only have two 50 mm lenses on my 45 year journey. Being desperately poor back then, I could only afford the Nikon 50 f/1.8 AI for my Nikon F2A and used it for over two decades during my film days. After that, I hadn't used a 50mm prime until the Nikon Z 50 f/1.2 S became available and now my current favorite.
As well, the Sigma first ART lens, the 50 f/1.4 was indeed a showcase, but I wasn't into primes during DSLR days other than the EF 85 f/1.2 L II.

I had a very different experience. I bought this lens in 2014 when I bought my Nikon D750 and found that it backfocused like crazy to a point I couldn't use the AF Tuning to compensate. It was also quite large and heavy compared to its Nikon counterpart, despite better optics! I think the focus problem is specific to Sigma and the D750 model since their newer 85mm f/1.4 Art series did the same thing. After trying a second copy at the camera store w/ the same results, I ended up exchanging the EX DG for a Nikon 50mm f/1.8G (the 1.4G was out of stock and I was leaving for a business trip the next morning and wanted a walk-around lens).
The difference is, the Sigma Art series allowed AF tuning via a USB dock to correct for the problem at several specific focusing distances since the calibration variation differed enough throughout the range where the D750's in-body AF Tuning only corrected one portion of the focal lrange w/ a single global adjustment (newer bodies got better at this). The downside w/ the Art series is the electronic aperture makes it incompatible w/ older F bodies, meaning it only shoots wide-open on an F5 or F100. I imagine the EX series works flawlessly on those bodies, and if the weight wasn't a factor, I'd make the same choice as you!

For Pentax-M, this f2 is OK, but the f1.7 version is really great. It is not always the case that the lens with widest possible aperture is the best. For instance, Pentax made 50 mm focal lenght Pentax-M prime lenses with maximum apertures of f2.0, 1.7 and 1.4. The 1.7 version is one of the best 50mm primes I have ever encountered. The f2 lens was standard in cheaper models, and it is a good lens, but nothing special 1.4 lens has a problem with sharpness in the edges of the frame with apertures wider than about 2.8.
I don't have much experience from Nikon, being a "Pentaxian" for a long rime. I have some experience from Canon too, but more from Canonets, and their Super8 movie cameras.
Try the f1.7 Pentax-M, you won't be disappointed!

While I agree with the optical greatness of this lens, there is an issue with the AF going out on them after a while. It's due to some coating wear between the two plates involved in the HSM mechanism. It happened to mine which I still use with manual focus. On the up side, the lens is super easy to open up, so when someone figures out how to fix the HSM in these lenses, mine is going back apart ASAP

For me, the 1987 ef 50 1.8 gives a filmlike character to my figital cameras, though the 40 2.8 gives a digital sharpness to film pics. The 24-105L F4 IS USM is my workhorse, and was a steal for me at 250 canadian. Cameras I use em on are 6D, 5D classic, elan 7e (black and white) and 7n (colour film). Have a few other lenses like tamron 20-35mm + 70-300, Canon 35-135 usm, but they don't give me the same pop in my images.

Currently on my favorites list: Helios 44-2m 58mm f2 (8 blade). Oh and total Monster 👺 of a lens Sigma 40mm f1.4 DG on a Sony a7r5 (it’s as big as most 70-200 f2.8) lol

    My go-to lenses are the nFD 50mm f1.8 & EF 50mm f1.2 - but the FD 35mm f2 is my favorite tbh.
