15 years ago I had the Canon EF f/1.8 - I loved that lens, it was barely off the camera. It had a focus motor as loud as a helicopter but it was super sharp every time.
FYI: Diffraction makes a lens softer at small apertures. In the future, try to keep the aperture between f8-f11 for sharpness tests as past that, diffraction usually kicks in, softening the image.
With so many different 50mm lenses, I was at a loss, but your video definitely helped me get a better understanding of what is offered at a more reasonable price range. Thank you so much for putting time and effort into this vid! I will now sub :)

I love my 50mm Sigma Art, so much that I still haven't upgraded to the GM. The GM 1.2 is very enticing, but at that price it's hard to justify the purchase. The Sigma is already so good.
I have been using the 35mm 1.4 Art lens for a few years now and it is one of my favourites. If I was going for another 50mm, as a Canon user, I would probably buy a second hand EF 50mm f1.2 but the 50mm Art would be tempting.
I own the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art lens and use it with my Canon R5. It's an incredible lens! I paid $570 for it. Among the best money I've spent on a lens to date, and I own a 70-200 2.8, an RF 100-500, A Sigma 14-24, a Sigma 60-600 Sport as well. Sometimes you have to sacrifice weight for quality, and this one does a little due to its heft, just like the 14-24 (another crazy good lens!) but it's well worth it. The end result is what it's all about, and this lens is stunning.
man, i was on the fence about getting this sigma f1.4, but seeing your shots in the highlands sold me, even if you're a pro and my shots won't come close to these!
While I agree the Sigma is super lens and a great alternative to the Sony 50mm f1.2 especially when comparing prices. But I'd be curious how you find this Sigma stacks up to other 50mm closer in price to it. My only issue with it, is the size. I'd only use for dedicated shooting sessions, and not a carry-around lens.

Sigma lenses represent the midpoint between perfection and infuriation: their quality control is bad, but when the lenses are good, they are exceptionally so. The predecessor to this lens (50mm f/1.4 EX DG) was also an absolute gem of a portrait lens. I used it on weddings and it never, ever missed a beat, producing the best photos I have ever captured.

I've just upgraded from the Canon RF50 f1.8 to the Sigma, I was looking at the Canon RF50mm f1.2 but as an amateur I really could not justify the cost of that lens, I'm VERY happy with my decision, on my R3 the image quality is superb and the autofocus is lightning fast, money well spent.

Sigma all the way! I got my Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro years ago, brand new, as it was up there with lenses twice its price and I was on a budget. Of course, nowhere near L lenses costing many times more but very decent still, especially at that MSRP of 219 Euros including a hood and soft pouch. Now I got a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary for the same exact reason. I love them both. I've been looking for a proper 50mm now as I really hate my EF 50mm 1.8 II "nifty fifty" and have been drooling over this Sigma and the Sony APS-C lineup as well. I might even get a used Sony A6000 series body just to pair it with the 30 and 56mm Sigma 1.4 lenses for anything other than my bird photography setup on the 7D Mark II as that will be a very compact combo that I can always have with me. P.S. Scotland is incredibly beautiful! I have to visit.

i hope they will release a native 50mm with apperture ring on the lens like they did with the updated 85mm. amazing lens, i had the old 50mm Art for my nikon.

The 50mm had temperamental "sticky" focus, the 20mm used to fog up internally at the slightest whiff of humidity and the 35mm shuck itself apart. They all hunted in low light. I spent more time nursing and calibrating them than using them. I agree, they're tack sharp and clinical, but not trustworthy or reliable for longevity compared to name brands. I hope their quality control has improved in recent years
@@KaiTiuraAs easy as that! And yes, I did eventually! It taught me a valuable lesson! Don't go cheap when professionally shooting. Pay the extra and stay with native brands instead. I have the sigma 28mm f1.4, incredible lens (my favorite) sharp corner to corner wide open with beautiful rendering that preserves the delicate tonal ranges and colors. I often pair it with a tiny sigma 45mm f2.8 which hasa quality to its rendering, not quite the love at first site of the 28mm, but still amazing. It is soft in the corners at only 2.8 (sharp when closed down). Been feeling into the 40mm f1.4 art, but that lens is even heavier (although weather sealed). The 28mm is fine for weight, but the 40 might be over the top? Your video has me taking a look at the 50 - thanks!
@leonardotonin6201 Have not tried on nikon, as do not have a nikon with either the old or new mount. I ended up getting the 40mm as well and love them both, although the 28 is my favorite of the two for my typical use. AF for me works well, including the 40mm with our very fast moving and agile dog, keeping in mind that some of this is camera dependent. I read something in a review a while back with some people who were having trouble with the lens on dslr nikon cameras (lens calibration), although that would not affect you with z mount.
@@michaelkhalsa thanks for your help. I heard that the af on the 28 has been improved. The price of this lens is smaller than the 28 1.8 g. I'm thinking more because the weight. Thank you.

@@TheTeejay73 Nikon has not prohibited third party lenses. There's many companies making lenses for the z mount. Sigma is one of the few that hasn't yet but I think they will announce their first lens this year in 2023.
Lol, I just bought that last month second hand for my D850. Though the sharpness is better on the Sony 55mm ZEISS f1.8 that takes the crown!
Love your videos always watch but dude. You need an l bracket for the tripod 👍🏼👊🏻
Just bought the Sigma 50 mm f1.4 art for my Canon R6
Hi.. I am R6 shooter also. May I know how this lens' perform with R6? Do you need to update the firmware of the lens prior to using this lens with R6?
It works great on the R6. No need for an update. Off course you need an adaptor. Good luck @@widiartoproboprasetyo9330
Hi Michael. I'm thinking about this lens on Nikon z mount. I'm just wondering if the af works. Have you tried? Thanks.
Thank you.
Where's Tokina Opera 50mm 1.4 in your collection? Shame it wasn't included, lol.
that Sigma's 50 is known for years now but I would go for the 40mm f1.4 Art lens I own the 20mm f1.4 Art and the 105mm f1.4 @Rt Bokehmaster

I am getting the samyang 50 1.4 mark ii. It seems like a good choice.

waaaay better.....
Nice video. Love the music. 😅
How good is it for video?
A74 or E1?
Great information. New subscriber
But the Art series is a lot of money and it's heavy! I was hoping for more insight on the smaller/lighter 50mm lenses.
i shoot sigma art 24,35 und 50mm, and the canon 3 major Zooms from 16zmm to 200mm shoot wit Canon C70 and . i finde it superb. they do perfect eyetracking and all autofocus actions fast and not to loud. to run a round snapshooting, i offen have my canon 40mm 2.8 pancake . on the Canon r6. bestprice/ qualitiy ever lense and so decent and little. but the sigmas are heavy and big but ... so very special, claer and so wow... they are absolutely qualified to shoot cinema quality on the C70 oder the othe Canon Cinema Cameras.
Mmmm for me I went with the zeiss 55mm f1.8….that lens is outstanding, same sort of price,a lot lighter and smaller with amazing results.
