I checked my Harbor Freight today (08/20/24) and the T7, T8 & T10 are available. I’m going all in on their T10 just as soon as a coupon becomes available (if I can wait). I think I’ll take advantage of their 0% as well.
Thank you for your detailed, thorough and thoughtful reviews of both the t8 and the t10. I am not a professional mechanic I have been a shade tree mechanic for my own, and my family's vehicles for almost 50 years. Somebody posted in the harbor freight comment for the t8 that it does all the sensors for Chrysler Dodge and Jeep. That is extremely important to me because I am battling a bug in my 2015 Dodge dart which stumped a professional mechanic and even his homeboys which he contacted in an attempt to resolve the problem. This car uses a unique setup on the intake valve train. They use computer-controlled solenoids to control the 8 intake valves. This is in lieu of a camshaft on the intake valve side. The exhaust valves are in a traditional valve train with a cam and a chain. This is done to squeeze every last HP out of the motor without putting a turbo in it. They get 183 horsepower out of a 2.5 L four banger. The thing I want the icon to do is be able to monitor the output of the computer to the solenoids and the feedback from the solenoids in real time. As soon as I am assured that it will do that I will buy the t8. I don't need all the bells and whistles of the t10 I already have a really good borescope camera. I saw the South Main Auto channel use one of these and I believe it provided direct links to the wiring diagrams of the Chevy Silverado he was working on. Does the T8 do this, or do I need to buy the T10?

I recently bought a snap on modis and I want guided component testing and all the benefits without having to be tied to an internet connection or a subscription account. My newest car is a 2008 so I am much as I want the latest and greatest do I really need that T10? I like it but I would like to wait till the software gets flushed out.
My son bought the t10 and ho-ly cr*p, talk about total confusion. This is after my son using my snapon modis edge for a few years. Navigating thru aaaaaall the things on the screen is just mind numbing. Snapon modis edge and then to the t10, oh boy. I had already found the problem with the vehicle while my son was still trying to find his way around in the t10.
I'm not defending one over the other here... but in all fairness, you'd already been using the Modis for several years and now trying to use a new tool that works differently, of course you're going to find it easier and quicker to use. Also, there is quite a difference in price between the two. For an every-day user the Modis may be a better tool but for your average user they probably won't use 95% of the features of either tool. I've owned my car stereo shop for 24 years now and I have owned 2 basic OBDII scanners that have gotten me everywhere I've needed to go as far as reading codes and erasing them. There are TONS of options out there. I find it crazy that many of these back-yard mechanics spend so much on these scan tools because they are told they need them. In reality, most guys don't even know what half the options are for and will never use them.

You're exactly right - zero (like none) of the OEM car manufacturers give access to their proprietary software away for free. I'm still blown away everyday by how many people on the internet seem clueless to the fact that the subscription fees on these scan tools are simply just to cover the costs of what the vendor has to pay to gain access to the OEM proprietary software. You can do that with a Tech 2 I have a clone that cost me just over $300 from China 9 years ago. Get a couple spare GM PCMCIA cards with the tool if you can.
Can the t8 reprogram key fobs and does it give you transmission and other motor temps? It's 799 right now with ITC and the one I have now doesn't read any of that stuff.
These type of scanners have limited capacity to program immobilizers specially in very modern vehicles. There are specialized Immobilizer tools available.
Thanks for checking out the T8 - this will show the transmission temps if the vehicle outputs those (basically the vehicle needs to have the coolant temp sensor, transmission temp sensor/etc...temp sensor installed and the T8 can pull and display that information); key fob reprogramming is a tricky thing as it is very much not universal and can vary quite a bit OEM to OEM. Which year/make/model are you working with? We can check with HF and let you know thanks.
@@FreshVintageGarageI was actually able to use a 15% any item coupon on my T8. I believe the restriction was that it had to be in-store, which they still allowed even though it was pre-stock at that time
Go into the main diagnostic section, then into the main engine diagnostic section for your year make and model. Once you get in there you should see the live data option 👍👍

I’ve taught diagnostics for 15 years to professionals. Please name a scan tool with better features for less money. I don’t think you’ll find one. I’ve used and taught others to use Autel, Snap-On, Bosch, and OEM scan tools. OEM is the best tool but at a higher price. Snap-On is okay but high priced. Autel has a lot of features for the price. This HF Icon is a lot of bang for the buck.
Having TH-cam is phenomenal. Just being able to refer to another howto video for some confidence boost is awesome. I'm truly diggin these!

Guided component testing almost always involves internet access periodically.

I have the Autel MX900 and having that issue in a HUGE way. The T8/T10 seem better organized/integrated than the Autel...

Per Icon as long as the vehicle supports the parameters they should check them.

Is Harbor Freight going to come out with Semi truck ,heavy truck , heavy duty equipment version ? I plan on getting a t10 unit in near future .

These are both just Launch software based scan tools. There are better scan tools for the money out there.
