    I've got this one too. The mother plant succumbed to the root rot in its first winter sadly but I'd taken cuttings which have done much better in my own soil mix with more drainage. One is flowering away nicely at the moment. I water from underneath now and use Babybio like you suggest. It does put out runners a bit like strawberries which are easy to propagate.

    Love your Begonia collection Lyn! Lovely coloured leaves and such beautiful patterns! I have the common begonias...in fact I had one which was neglected and ended up in a very long stem and just 2 leaves on top! So I cut the stem into pieces and put in water until it rooted, then potted them. Until now they are ok! Have an amazing evening Lyn and Hans! Sending you lots of love!

    I just got this on from a local lady! I love love begonias but I always unalive them 😢
    I think I water too much! So this one that I just got and I'm not watering until the soil is light. I would-be so disappointed if I over watererd this one.
    I feel like it needs to be in a shallower pot? It's currently in a deep nursery pot. It's also under a glass dome so fingers crossed!

      Thats fantastic you have got one of these Begonia bowerae's Natasha :-D they are absolutely beautiful, they can be rot prone and its definitely better to under water than over water, they do have quite shallow root systems and prefer to be in a shallower pot than a deep one, Happy growing your new beauty, and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

    i have my first begonia, the largest of six babies propagated from a pair of leaves given to me by a lovely bookseller! the best ID i have on it is “tiger”, definitely rhizomatous. the thick stem teh leaves grow up from is the rhizome? it is growing over the pot edge like your tiny one. you implied that one can take rhizome cuttings...i’d like it to “stay in the pot” a bit more and may try that. it’s been hard to find info on how these actually grow, so thanks for this video! (our son got his master’s at Queen’s College and we’ve visited there twice. we love bittles, st george’s, and belfast in general..at least the bits we walked from queen’s to city hall and environs. ) cheers!

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sarah :-D thats fantastic you have rescued one of these beautiful begonia's, yes you can take off a leaf and lay it onto the soil, you can clip the veins but I get good success by cutting off a leaf and laying on top of the soil, I keep the very top of the soil just very slightly moist but not wet to encourage rooting, good luck with your propagation and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

    I adore this plant, my first and only begonia, and one that everyone who sees it comments on. I got a mature one whose rhizomes are trailing down quite a bit (50 cm or so) and I didn't really know how to take care of it, so I'm not doing anything too extreme with it and it seems to hold up well. It is so easy to propagate so I also have a pot with lovely rooted leaves going, that accidentally fell off during watering or brushing past. I really want a second begonia now, one that I saw in your video of (I think) the botanical garden in Belfast: Begonia Listada, but so far no luck yet.. Thanks for the video, was waiting for this one : )

    I was hoping you can give me some advice on my tiger paw begonia. I bought it online and it arrived very full but it just kept dropping leaves until the only thing left was the rhizome. I have covered it with a bag to keep it from drying out.

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tiziana, so sorry to hear about your Tiger Paw Begonia, this time of year these Begonias have a little bit of a rest period, and I notice that most of my begonias will wilt and then drop a lot of their leaves at this time of year,and some of my begonias lose all their leaves and just the Rhizome is left, they do re shoot again from early to mid Winter onwards with new leaves from the Rhizomes, you have done the best thing to keep it covered loosely with a bag to keep the humidity up, but pierce some holes into the bag so ventilation can come through too, hopefully the Rhizomes on your new plant will re shoot again in a few weeks, it may be because of the shock of the move to your begonia and also the time of year, but fingers crossed it should re cover for you, Do keep me updated on how your Tiger Paw gets on, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Sunday XXXX

      Hi Julie :-D so happy you love Begonias too, the good news is that the Tigers paw Begonia like the one in this video have a habit of drooping their leaves and hanging them down at this time of year and is normal, and new fresh firmer stems and leaves normally start to emerge from the middle again and the plant picks up again, its due to them having a little bit of a rest during the Summer time, mine do this too every Summer but then pick up again from late Summer onwards, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

    Great video! What humidity percentage do you suggest for this plant?

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So happy you loved the video Suzanne :-D Ideally these plants prefer a humidity of 70%, we have this beauty in our kitchen that is around 65-70 % humidity and it grows well, but when I had it in my grow room it used to go brown on the edges slightly in the Winter months due to the drier air from the heating, and our grow room is about 50% humidity w, but we keep our kitchen cooler as we overwinter the Euphorbias and Cereus Pilocereus in there haha :-D if the humidity is too high though it can encourage the stems to go moldy, but ideally between 65-75 % is best if possible, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a marvellous Monday XXXXX

    What's the diff with tiger paw and tiger kitten

  • @emmitstewart1921
    @emmitstewart1921 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have four varieties of Begonia right now.
    Begonia Flirty Girl is a cross between a cane stem begonia and a rex begonia, It has silver leaves with a dark green blotch in the center and lots of pink flowers that hang their heads like a shy girl. Like it's rex mother, it propagates easily from leaves. Like it's cane stem father, it propagates easily from stem cuttings.
    Begonia Ionic is an orange flowered angel wing. It's kind of droopy, so I'm growing it as a hanging plant. It was said to be fragrant, but I can't smell it. It does put out a lot of big orange flowers for me to sweep up. It seems to need more humidity than I can give it, but it's hanging in there.
    Begonia Tinkerbelle is a shrub type begonia. It has foliage that is corrugated like a tin roof or a ripple type peperomia. The tops of the leaves are dark forest green and the underside of the leaves are dark red. It blooms profusely, like a bedding type begonia, and the blooms are white in the center and pink on the edges. It roots easily from stem cuttings, so I have several plants scattered around my growing area.
    Begonia Dregei v. partita would be of interest to you because it is a succulent. The base of the stem is swollen to form a caudex. above the caudex it has thin branching stems with tiny maple like leaves. In dry conditions, it tends to shed leaves, but the plant keeps on growing. Lots of little white flowers in summertime. It roots easily from stem cuttings, but it takes quite a while for the caudex to form.
