The front door that parcel thieves hate - BBC News

  • An expanding door that locks away small parcels and calls the police if larger ones are stolen is on show at the CES tech expo in Las Vegas.
Its developers suggest the innovation is more secure than Amazon's own solution to the problem of parcel thieves.
It looks a bit clunky, but Chris Fox tried out the invention to see if it worked in practice.

@@fairplay4164 what about your kids etc.. How do they know its full before they trow the door open (as kids do). I can see it being smashed off walls etc. Damaging itself and stuff it hits.
Silly idea. You can already get pass through parell collectores(heated and cooled), that rotate so once somthing in, more stuff can go in. Or if you don't have the room (or funds for that) a simple parcel box with a smart lock.
My back up deliver spot of my amazon is in my shed that has a combination lock. The code is on my 'back up' notice. Simple and effective.
I'm not that bothered if one day my lawn mower gets lifted. Plus my camera sees who goes in and out my shed. And the door is marked 'cctv' just incase any driver gets the erge to steal my £30 flymow, and £10 stemmer lol. Though I'd be happy if the took the rest of the crap that is in it. Its trully crap I've yet to take the skip.

    So many problems with this:
    1. If you’re out, all those extended flaps will mean the door is impossible to open, unless there is some way of getting them back out from the front.
    2. This only works if every delivery driver from every delivery company sending stuff from every company has the required software on their phone. I severely doubt either of my two local companies that do dry cleaning are that sophisticated. And I’ve received deliveries from some very low tech looking companies.
    3. If it’s raining out, maybe I don’t want my parcel tethered to my door where it will get wet. Maybe I’d rather know it’s somewhere safe and dry.
    4. It looked like for the tether, it poked a small hole the box. The delivery driver doesn’t know what’s inside, poking a hole in it could potentially damage the contents. And customers can seek compensation if their parcel arrives damaged.
    5. Thieves will very quickly learn that if you’re going to steal a parcel, leave your smartphone turned off and in the car. Then the door can’t read your phone.
    6. Any technology can be hacked. Someone will create an app or software to do it. And then you have nice big openings into the home.
    7. The average person is never going to be able to afford that?
    8. And anyone renting, living in flats etc can’t choose to fit one.
    9. How will delivery drivers know which are the fancy door or not?
What happened to good old fashioned leave the parcel with the neighbours? Or if you have a problem with theft, put a camera looking at your door. Because whilst, I agree it can be frustrating to come home to a card telling me I’ve missed a delivery, it’s better than that door. At least the parcel and my home are safe.

You don't need the huge expense of every panel electronically expanding. They can expand as the particle is pushed in.
I'd rather the simple mechanical design they have at drop-offs for clothes re-cycling or banks. The parcel slides in and when you shut the panel, a door swings down blocking the way to get the parcel out again. As the pacles slide to the floor, it will never be full, won't prevent you opening the door from the outside (if built properly), be fraction of the cost and never break down.

I would say that's it criminal that the Tories want to make pensioners pay
A tv licence is a lot cheaper than a basic sky package and the BBC are the people who fund the majority of freeview so your paying for freeview at a good rate compared to competitors
If you don't pay sky you get a dench debt collector at your door
If you don't want a tv licence you just go to tv licencing and fill out there I don't need a licence form
You do need a licence to :
Watch or record any programs on any tv channel or live on a online service
And to download or watch BBC programs on iplayer, live, catchup or on demand
All of this is for any device:
      Computer
      Laptop
      Mobile phone
      Tablet
      Games console
      Digital box
      DVD/VHS recorder
All info is from on the licence is from tv licencing
The BBC produces high quality content for all
      It is not properganda
I would call things like fox properganda
The BBC is politicaly neutral however different platforms may show a different political side
It is 2019 so if you have a tv You still have to pay until 2020

You're talking rubbish. The licence fee is a civil, not a criminal issue. They literally can't throw you in prison. Just as an indication of how stupid you are, the TV licence fee is free for those aged 75 and over.
I wish that people like you had been stillborn. That way only your parents would have mourned your wretched life, rather than inflicting the turgid cancer of your existence on the rest of society.

    But what if,
Burglars steal a parcel from another address that doesn't have an E door 🚪 then use that parcel 🗃 box to open the parcel hatch on a rich person's E door. Presumably they'd be able to climb in and kick out those fabric sides and gain entry to the house.
    The Technology ⚙ is flawed.

    • @MrSumphora
      @MrSumphora 5 ปีที่แล้ว

You clearly don't understand how this technology works, do you? You literally can't open the door with someone else's package. It's a code unique to your specific delivery. Taking a random package from anyone else won't do shit.
Why did you even comment? Did you not stop for a single second and recognise that you knew jack shit about this and so didn't have a valid opinion? Are you proud of the fact that you're a complete idiot? Evidently you must be, or else you wouldn't have said anything at all. Or are you so hopelessly entitled, shallow, self-absorbed, and arrogant, that you thought whatever inane drivel you could lamely spew would somehow be valuable?

    • @encalica853
      @encalica853 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@MrSumphora Alright then Mr Keyboard Warrior. Wouldn't it be more pleasant to inform the man of how the technology works, without creating a scene that I would liken to one inserting a blacksmiths bellows into one's arse and then compressing them, causing the faeces from your inside to spew from your mouth in an 'inane' dribbling manner similar to that of a rabid dog.
You are clearly eloquent with your words, but not so in either courtesy or moderation.
As believe your range of vocabulary maskes you appear eloquent, it has led to a sense of helpless entitlement; causing you to be blatantly foul.
Take a strong and scrupulous look at yourself, you have achieved very little in your comment above bar making yourself appear as an over-inflated, arrogant and frankly nasty character.
Ironically, you seem to have become what you called the man in the above comment. Take a look at it yourself and see what you can apply to the reflection on your mirror

    • @MrSumphora
      @MrSumphora 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@encalica853 Okay, well if apparently I am all those things then I shall try not to disappoint.
If a dog was spewing shit from its mouth, then rabies would be the least of its problems. Also, there's no actual way you can be eloquent "in either courtesty or moderation". Eloquence refers solely to your vocabulary, not what you use it for. In future, I'd suggest you try attacking my vocabulary with some different terms - perhaps grandiloquent, pompous, verbose, or something of that nature would work better.
How would my entitlement be "helpless" exactly? I'm afraid that doesn't really make sense. I'm also equally unsure as to how it would be possible to look at something in a "scrupulous" way. Did you use google to look up synonyms and just pick whichever one sounded cleverest?
I get that you're trying to sound clever and give me a taste of my own medicine, but you're failing so badly that you've ruined the whole effect. Would you like to try again? If so, here's a useful tip: there's a difference between naturally expressive, with a healthy vocabulary, and deliberately using long and complicated words. The former is what, as you say, might be termed "eloquent". The latter, however, is both pretentious and contemptuous in equal measure.

Lol here in Brazil, if the person getting the package isn't home either the company leaves it at the building/condo security room or they leave with a neighbor who has to sign their name, phone and address (that way you can call the company and ask who they left with). If neither of these options are possible, they will just come back another day, and if it takes too long you'll have to pick it up at the post office. I had never even heard of package thieves lol

Parcel thievery isn't a problem here in Germany. The driver has to ring the door bell and hand it over personally and I have to sign for it. If I am not at home, I have several options depending on the delivery company. I can specifiy a place on my property, where they should leave the parcel, for example on the back porch. But I have to choose that option online individually for every parcel I get. Or I can tell them to leave it with certain neighbors or the delivery company leaves me a not to collect it from the postal office in town.

Michael Snelham Most likely people would only get this if they have a house, and most houses have a door inside the garage to the house which is how people go into their home, not the front door. Still limits the market for this though.

  • @carolineleonard8214

The problem with this is that when you open the door and there are parcels inside then they will hit against the wall behind the door. You'll be lucky if you can open the door then. Thus you will need a large amount of clearance behind the door.

  • @rosevampire3755
