      The wall was about 8-12 inches away, could have put a 2/4 against the wall and turn the big wrench counter clockwise until the handle hit the 2/4 and would hold it from turning. Thus he could have used both hands on one wrench.

    Great Video. I used those Sharkbites connecting to PEX. They even make one with the turn-off ball valve for the cold water side.

    Easy to change a hot water heater on the ground floor in a nice, big utility room. In my town, they are in the attic. Just helped my friend replace his - good thing he is in shape. Up the stairs and then the little folding stairs into the attic and no headroom.

    Your videos look great. As a handyman myself this looks very familiar. To the people asking questions, why he didn't do this or that, give him a break. The gas valve may be missing a handle but he's not being paid to do that he's replacing the tank. Braided flex connections are perfectly fine. He could have hard piped it back in he has the skill, he could have replaced the main valve, he could have touch up painted the wall he could have piped the t&p outside and put in a drip pan but doing work for a client, you go as far as the client wants. Handymen have a variety of skills however the methods of work may vary from someone who specialized in that area like a plumber. Which is typically why handymen are cheaper a plumber may have given an estimate of $850 on this job for example. He may have been at $400. As a client if your writing the check which one sounds better especially if you have used the person before or otherwise know they are competent and can meet your need.

    Great job! I didn't think about getting the Sharkbite type of feedlines! That saves a ton of time without soldering and finding the correct fittings. I'm also surprised that you didn't install the earthquake safety straps that are required by the California Plumbing Code.

    • @delz_clan9251
      @delz_clan9251 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Binhtri Vu you can’t use those shark bite stuff they only last for about 5-10 years the metal teeth will corrode and the shark bite with just come off the pipe then you got a bad mess on your hands

    • @ericmcdaniel4029
      @ericmcdaniel4029 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@delz_clan9251 they are warranted up to 25 years. So hopefully more than 5-10. That’s if you deburred and cleaned the copper pipe properly that you connected to.

    • @daleon96
      @daleon96 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@delz_clan9251 sorry, but your wrong... Mine have been on my water heater for about 12 or 13 years now they're not the least bit corroded... What I do is before I put the short bites on I coat the pipe and the inside of the shark pipe with plumber's grease, not a heavy coat obviously just a little touch of it... You be surprised how that little bit of a thing stops corrosion.... Not to mention most people don't debur or clean the pipes before putting them on like you should..
      I like the short bites because if you ever need to change the water heater again they pop off really easy, there's no point constantly cutting pipe and resoldering every time

  • @jasonw165
    @jasonw165 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Something you should try next time you have trouble breaking apart a union... Use two hammers to "warm it up". Hit one side of the union with one of the hammers while pressing against the opposite side with the other hammer. The opposite side hammer will help absorb the impact and it will almost seem like you hit that hammer directly. You might need to do this on several different places around the union. You will be amazed at how easy it will loosen after you do this. You don't need to hit it really hard.

    Great job! Only thing I do differently (not necessarily better or makes a difference) is to fill the tank up with the hot side line not connected. This reduces the amount of air that will be pushed into the water lines from the empty tank. After the tank is close to full then i connect the hot side.

      If you hook them both up absentmindedly, (which is easy to do when you're in the flow of thingsJust open the pressure relief valve for a few moments while you fill the tank as soon as it sputters just close it. That will minimize the air as well.

    I agree that the gas shut off should be updated in a case like this for the sake of safety and for convenience. It is advised that the gas appliance input be checked to ensure that the appliance is burning at the rate on the manufactures plate. As well, you should always ensure that the vent is drafting properly. It is code here in British Columbia that a vacuum relief be installed on the cold water inlet.

    Gas flex lines are permitted on water heaters in northwest Indiana, but not in Illinois just 10 minutes away. However, always NO on furnaces, and sometimes you find them hooked up with flexy lines especially in rental units.
    Can't believe you were replacing that tank only after 10 years. The 1990 water heater in my home is still working strong, no joke!

    I watch your videos...and I'm not even sure why? I think the recording style and presentation is great and there's this bizarre sense of humor that shines through..like when you practically yelled "GREAT" at 3:18 Haha! But overall, I think it's because I'm impressed, and I feel like I can learn a lot from what feels like a honest dude trying to do a good job. If I had any advice it would be don't worry about channel growth, your personality, integrity, and recording style will get you there in time. Stay away from titles...that don't exactly correlate with the video...or that seem a little too.."catchy". For preferences...I'd say some of your audience may not be construction savvy, so it would be cool if you threw in a little more advice here and there. All n' all you do great work bud, keep it up and thank you!

      @TheHandyman1  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feed back. I always skip the intros on videos I watch. Should I give an intro to the project. Like say what I'm going to be doing or just get started with the tools and work?

    • @wolvenhart3614
      @wolvenhart3614 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think a choice like that should be dynamic, not just one or the other. If it's like a full project, use the intro to explain the project and break it down, point to where things are going and whats going to happen. Give a basic background. If the title explains it really well though, jumping right in is refreshing and quick paced which is great! For example in this video the title really explains what you're doing well, so jumping right in was perfect, but in the video where you doing the kitchen remodel, explaining all that out in an intro is more suitable in my opinion. Hope that helps bud!

    • @TheHandyman1

    Little trick to a un-stuck-stuck union fitting. A Stationary hammer on one side of the stuck union and glancing blows with another hammer to force the rotating portion of the union in a clock wise direction with another hammer. Works like a charm.

    Just a tip if you want to shave some of the time off. Don't bother with attaching a hose if the water heater is located next to an exterior door. Just shut off valves, disconnect and tilt the heater a little to spin it out of the door. Next smack the hose bib off with a hammer and let her drain out while you connect the new heater. We all learn as we go.

    The title says how to replace in 30 minutes, looked like it took much longer than that, especially having to go out and get new lines.

    • @ExemptAK
      @ExemptAK 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I can't believe it took 30mins. Hour or maybe hour and a half would make sense but 30mins that title ruined this video imo.

      That actual work would’ve taken me longer than 30 minutes. Plus picking up the original water heater, then running for the supply lines and finally dumping the old water heater it seems to me like it would’ve been a 3 to 4 hour job.

    • @Hever73
      @Hever73 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lol! for sure it takes much longer than 30 minutes . Usually it takes two to three hrs .
      First hrs its to drain the boiler and disassemble the parts of the water heater, one hrs installing it , testing it, vent can be hard some times, you still have to dump the old water heater.
      So we are talking about three to five hrs depending where its located, garage can be easy, attic in a two story house can be fun

      @joshbarrow3710 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Never open the T&P unless it's the absolute only option, I always go to the closest bathroom and open the hot side of the tub, 1 it has no aerator that can clog up from sediment or anything else that loosens up, and 2 its going to let out the most air as fast as possible

    • @darienlandry6777
      @darienlandry6777 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You definitely can use the T&P it’s not bad to, yes you should always be right there when bleeding it but you can definitely use it, using a faucet works best but take the aerator off first so you don’t get any stuff caught in the aerator

      I use to never use them. They are approved to be used inside closed walls now. I see so many guys using them these days. They cost a lot more than other methods. On a small project like this it makes it so much faster that its worth the extra cost.

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Tomtom9401 the pipe is attached to a pressure relief valve. If the water gets to hot it comes out the pipe. The pipe can be installed at any time. I was bleeding the air out of the house water pipes and was installing the pipe at the same time.

    • @TheHandyman1
      @TheHandyman1  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Every job is a little different. First I never charge by the hour. Most customers can't comprehend paying a handyman 4 times as much as they make per hour. My customers never know how much is profit and how much is materials. My main objective is to give the customer good value for their money, exceed their expectations and get them to refer me to their friends and family.
      I try to average $500 for a days work and $2000 for a weeks work. On really small projects that only take a few hours. I charge much less. I use these jobs to market myself. I give them great value and exceed there expectations This gets me in the door for larger projects and referrals.
      Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

    Small suggestion, really bugs me every time I hear it, "Hot water heater" it's a water heater! Hot water doesn't need a water heater, I realize most people don't even notice it but to me, it's like fingernails on a chalkboard. Being a perfectionist is both a blessing and a curse.
    I do love your videos, you do a great job and with my 30 years of maintenance experience I still pick up some incites from them, Thanks!

    • @richardlentner8619
      @richardlentner8619 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In theory you heat cold water or room temp water to make it hot but also........the water in the water when heated is hot and it does heat the hot water until the hot water is heated to the max temp setting that the thermostat is set to . So.....hot water is constantly heated to maintain the set temp. so you could call it a water heater or a hot water heater but I understand what you are saying.

    • @rickpowell1402
      @rickpowell1402 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Customers respond to, refer to, and react well to" hot water heater" as opposed to "water heater", It was a small study that determined this and its ok to call it a hot water heater IMO.

      I have to replace my hot water heater, so i went to the ATM machine to take out some cashmoneydineros, but the hardware appliance store cashier said they only took credit card, but i only had my debit, so I drove home and took a cold shower, which is really just room temp water. I hate it when people call it cold shower, it only feels cold, but its just ambient temp ?! 🙄

    It happens that just today I finished installing a new gas water heater in my house. Old 40-gallon, original to the house lasted 13 years. Found a 12-year warranty 50-gallon unit for $30 less than the 40-gallon my local big-box store was selling (NOT an 'orange' or 'blue' store). I asked them how much installation would be if they called one of their referral companies. Answer - $280. No thanks. Day 1 was just getting the tank home. I was told laying the tank flat to transport was not a good idea. fortunately, I have a big, old station wagon, so I just stood the tank up on the open tailgate. secured it with straps, and slowly drove the 4 miles home. Day 2 I got the old tank out of the garage, and muscled the new tank up a ramp into position, hooked up all the important connections, and got it going. Day 3 I did the earthquake strapping (code) and pressure relief valve tubing. Also fixed one small gas leak at the drip cup. Any I only had to make 3 extra trips back to the home improvement store after buying the new water heater. LOL.
