That short piece of pipe you removed from that gas supply tee is there for a reason. Its a sediment trap and it catches debris that could come from your gas supply and traps it before it goes in your regulator. You should have left it on.

This is a really good step by step video this comment is mainly for people who are watching it and going to attempt this themselves a couple tips that I would suggest is make sure all your fittings are brass and not the galvanized stuff, brass is a little more expensive but totally worth it in the long run also you want to make sure the pressure in your expansion tank matches your water pressure, you will need a pressure gauge and some sort of air compressor or pump, if not your expansion tank will fail prematurely, and lastly make sure your gas line has that little pipe that he removed it’s actually there to trap sediment coming in, what he did definitely will work and he’s up and running but these suggestions are just to help your system last you as long as possible and if you can shell out the extra money for a 12 year tank especially since you’re saving money by doing it yourself, I would do that as well, good luck to you all this is a great video, thank you

Unfortunately my water heater just gave out. Water leaking all over the garage. I’ve had a few estimates and it looks like the only way I’m going to be able to afford it is to do it myself.
    Thanks for the video!

Revisions should be made to your install. Make sure you do not remove the t drip like I did for the gas line input. This is designed to catch debris which can cause issues for the water heater. Make sure to use no corrosive piping for the main water lines into the water heater, such as copper or galvanized pipe and fittings. The dope sealant does not require time to cure or dry. This was my first time doing a water heater or this type of plumbing and thanks to everyone for the feedback to point out the things I did incorrectly. I have since fixed my trap and replaced my water inlet piping. Thanks for the support everyone.

The flared fitting on the gas line does not (and should not) use pipe sealant. White ptfe tape can degrade in natural gas (there is a yellow tape for gas).

Good video. Took me about 6 + hrs. and i thought I had all parts, some hoses too short, etc. When I got to lighting the pilot it didn't work at first. Keep trying and hold down that pilot knob . I had to try 3 x pressing ignitor 10x each try. Also some Gas hoses now come with a safety valve , make sure you install in the direction of the gas flow. If pilot still does not light try another gas line to test (I had my dryer gas line ) or change safety valve/fitting with regular fitting

I purchased a Rheem 50 Gallon Hot Water Tank and pretty handy with doing things as I have a couple of rentals. I have never installed a Hot Water Tank but seems like I can handle it. One thing I want to ask do you really need a Joint expansion Tank or a Pressure Release Tank on the Cold Water Side? Right now I have a old RUUD Tank that is close to 30 years old and there is no Tank on the Cold Water side.

    • @CraigP-z4t
      @CraigP-z4t 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

If you meant thermal expansion tank then they're really only necessary in a closed system which means you've got something like a check valve or regulator on the main water supply to the house. Most municipalities will require expansion tanks on new installations to be code compliant and if you're on a well the pressure tank can act as an X-tank as long as there's no check valve between it and the WH.

That piece you removed and replaced with the plug was actually needed. It's a drip leg and a must have. You should've screwed in one piece at a time starting from the appliance then screwed the drip leg in at the end. Your supply line should be screwed into the top of that T and the drip leg on the bottom. And call me crazy but that looks like black pipe being used for water supply which is not suitable for drinking water.

The yellow gas line most likely has a compression fitting and you are not suppose to use pipe dope with it? I thought PVC gluing required a primer and then the glue, unless you are using some new product where you don't need the primer/glue and use one product instead? I think your draft hood attached to the exhaust pipe connection at the top of the water heater looked fine, it was only a very very small tiny tilt that I do not think matters, but there is nothing wrong with making it perfectly straight also for at least 4-6 inches. Unfortunately whoever did my original water heater used a twisting coupler piece, so there is only about 2-3 inches of straight pipe there. Gas line can also have a sediment trap, but my home did not have one. Wondering if I should add that or not. Also the instructions show a 6" heat trap (going downward) on the hot water output line, but in my home there is one that goes up, not sure if that matters or not? I am just a home owner installer too, watching your video to make sure I don't miss anything.

  • @Mammothbaron

Why did you take the sediment trap off the gas hookup? You use a little bit too much dope, go easy on that so it doesn’t get into the gas valve and cause issues. It’s ok to put a little dope on flare and compression fittings but keep it skin thin. Always use black iron pipe for oil, LP, and natural gas, copper, pex, galvanized, brass for water.

Thanks for the insight. I spoke with my brother in law after this and he explained where I made a few mistakes. Yeah already fixed the trap issue. I replaced the pipe with what exactly was there before, novice move, I should have used coper. That will be my next project to redo before its starts putting rust into the water.

Another thing i havent seen commonly mentioned here is your water temperature. I know you may want to conserve energy, but if your tank temperature is under 120 degrees as you measured in that cup, then that's also a problem. Tank temps below 140 degrees can allow bacterial formation.

What you're probably looking for is the water heater recovery rate which will vary based on a few different things, but for a tank similar to the one installed in the video would be in the ballpark of 40-50 min. The recovery time doubles if using an electric water heater instead of gas.

My understanding is that the black steel pipe and tee are meant to use for natural gas Installation.

Could have used copper piping for water lines and you wont have the same issue corroding again.

Critters can crawl into that exterior drain, possible negating the value of the pressure relief valve. Flue pipe not mechanically connected to H2o heater. Depending on the plumbing a dielectrc union should be considered.

The black pipe that you connected the expansion tank is to be used on gas line NOT for portable water.
