- Their goal... was freedom... A classic film review of the 1981 war/sports movie Escape to Victory. Starring Sir Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone, Pele, Bobby Moore and Max Von Sydow, this could be the ultimate football movie!
Directed by legendary film maker John Huston , its the tale of a group of allied P.O.W.s as they prepare for a soccer game against the German National Team. As the match is played in Nazi-occupied Paris, the French Resistance and British officers make plans for the team's escape...

Released between the 1978 and 1982 World Cups, Escape to Victory went unappreciated in the United States where football hadn't quite caught the imagination of the public. Having an all star cast of footballing legends helped it elsewhere... Pele, Bobby Moore, Ossie Ardiles and Mike Summerbee all star alongside some true Hollywood talent. Part World War Two prison camp film and part international football match, Escape to Victory is a true cult classic and possibly the greatest football film ever made.

Remember watching this movie maybe give it another viewing.
Ipswich town had won the F.A. cup beating Arsenal just previously....so were big news in the papers & TV. Unfortunately I'm an Arsenal fan and went to both the F.A cup final and saw this in the cinema. 😢 nice review again mate
Excellent review. Thanks as always. Not my favourite POW film but a great romp
It's a remake of a great Hungarian movie called: Two Half Times in Hell 1961
Absolutely magnificent movie
We can win this!!! Awesome movie!!!
I can’t believe this film is from the early 80’s I always had in my mind it was at least from a decade before 😮 I’ve seen this so many times, despite not being a football fan (thanks for only calling it soccer once 😂) excellent as always, take care👍😃👍
It does feel like an older film doesn't it! Yeah I think you can enjoy it without being invested in the actual mechanics of the football match. It's such a bizarre mixture of a cast I can't help but enjoy it! Thanks as always buddy 👏📽
And like every soccer match ever, it ended in a draw... :)
This was a decent caper flick, but I think you are absolutely correct about
the soccer element hurting the American box office. It was quite prominent
in the trailers.
BTW, Stallone's character was American. I think they made him a fake Canadian ID for the escape.
Thanks for sharing. I saw this decades ago on American television. Hope to see it again. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music/Sacred & Secular (and movie buff and sports fan)
Steven, hi from California ... you're great entertainment with the insightful reviews ..... ❤ Please consider Orson's "Touch of Evil" for some noir and Bogdanovich's funny "What's up, Doc?" ❤
Thank you so much, that's very much appreciated! I have an older review for Touch of Evil right here th-cam.com/video/zbSc2ZaewUY/w-d-xo.html and will certainly consider What's up, Doc? Thanks, have a great week. 👏📽
Hi Steven,
“Escape to victory” may not be considered as a top world war 2 movie but it is very entertaining with a fine cast of top actos with some of footballing greats & few recognisable Ipswich town players in there like John Wark & Russell Osman .
The movie itself is like “The Great Escape” meets “The Longest Yard” to me anyway, fine review as always 😎👍
calls football football I subscribe. cheers from brazil
👏⚽️
The POW escape plot does make this film less a blatant gimic movie. First time I saw it I only caught it from the match onwards (and thought it was cheesy). The second time I saw the entire movie. In that full context the match works much better. John Wark (with moustache), Russell Osman and Kevin O'Callaghan were all well known players in the English First Division, playing for Ipswich.
Yes, i loved this movie.
An absolutely ridiculous movie, however in 1981 when we were 15, it was well recieved by myself, a Spurs supporter and my Ipswich supporting mate, here in Clacton on Sea.
Looks like a good film 😊
