The Taking of Pelham 123 (1974) - Movie Review
I’m not actually sure I’ve seen this movie 😮 I’ve just checked and the blu-ray is now out of print 😡 this sound very edgy, I will be on the look out for this film. Nice one mate👍😃👍
What a great movie In The Name Of The Father is, it went up again some great movies in the 66th Academy Awards, if I recall Emma was also up for best actress for Remains Of The Day too…. I do recall the actual events as well on the news,my brother joined the army just a couple years after 😬 excellent as always mate, take care👍😃👍
One of my favourite Hitchcock films. Love the subplot with the Chief Inspector and his wife :)
Piggy angry?
Not my favourite Hitchcock but still a great thriller!
The 1978 movie is better than the 2012 remake in my opinion.
Hitchcock last real film. (Forget family plot ) I think Barry foster is miscast. Michael Caine would have been a better choice, Great. Review tho stay safe 👍
As always an unusual choice. Saw it at the cinema in 72. It is a fantastic snapshot of the early 70s. Never licked Barry foster probably due the parts he played ( check out the sweeny film ). Jon finch should have been a bigger star Thanks for the review and reminder of this film.
Another great one 👍. This was one of my favourite first watches of 2023. I don't think you mentioned in the video that it was Powell as the father torturing the young Mark. I think that murdering 'national treasure' Moira Shearer would have condemned any film of that time 🤔.
Thanks so much! You’re absolutely right, I think it was Powell and his son in the footage. 👍🏼
Excellent review. I only saw this for the first time six months ago and I agree with everything you said.
Rewatched this a few months ago and whilst it had flashes of the old inspiration didn't like it much at all, feels grubby and dated more than shocking. I think it was a massive error to have the prolongued 'R' scene first and then later have the famous trick shot where the camera moves away and backs out of the house, I mean agree it's a great shot but why go from exploitative and traumatic scene first and then suddenly become coy? Tonally it just doesn't work that way around.
I thought that as the audience has already seen what he’s capable of, having us track back and see the world outside carrying on as normal whilst the horrors are going on upstairs was quite effective… agree with the grubby and dated though, but that’s what I quite like about it. 🤔😊
Michael Caine was offered the role of the killer, but turned it down as he reckoned it would end his career. Hitchcock never spoke to him again.
What an idiot.
I'll definitely check this movie out.
i saw this movie on amaze
How is it possible that I forgot this film. Brilliant for me Emma Thomson can do no wrong. If you get the chance check out Harry’s game early 80s tv production staring ray lonnen and Charlie from casualty not so political but a fine drama about the troubles ( as they were called ). Thanks as always. I remember the news in 74 tragic incidents
Yes, it is mostly forgotten which is a big shame as it's such a well made movie. I'm not familiar with Harry's Game but will certainly take a look into it. Thanks!
This looks great, Emma Thompson is one of my favourite actors and Day-Lewis is always brilliant!
A good well made film with a good cast which along with Get Carter(1971) give a more realistic look at London crime and the violence thay goes with it
The moto was'take one with you '
I truly love this classic movie. Thank you for your review.
My all time favourie movie
Saw it when it first came out! In LA! I was 13 years old! Literally BLEW ME AWAY! My Favorite!
Shameless S4EP4 brought up this movie as one of the character's fav movie. Figured I look into it a bit. Good video breakin down the film and it's positive points.
The Beatles changed the music industry and became , Still to this day , the most beloved ❤️ rock band of all time and people are still buying their music. When they arrived in the US for the Ed Sullivan show on February 1964, America was hurt from the death of the US president. Their timing could not have been better. The brought joy and happiness with their personalities and their incredible music. And of course they just got better and better and stayed on top of the music industry till their breakup. This movie captured their magic. Lots of fun and joy with a brilliant soundtrack.
I love the toy train and car in the opening scene. Hitchcock dares you to challenge the veracity of the set. A lodger put his head around the door while I was watching TLV, stared in unbelief, and said, "What's this s**t?" I replied, "This is theatre. "
So well acted by a great cast but the ending lets it down. I understand the censor at the time didn't allow criminals to prosper but surely they could have thought up a more creative way of them being caught.
I loved the Beatles back in the day, their films and music, my parents preferred The Monkeys though 😄 clean old grandfather….on the contrary 😆 that was Wilfrid Brambell aka Albert Steptoe. I didn’t know that it was nominated for Oscars 😮 Nice one mate, take care👍😃👍
Sad to say Judy Geeson (Beryl Evans) is now the only survivor of the film's four main stars, as Pat Heywood (Ethel Christie) passed away on June 26th, June, 2024 aged 92. I'm sure many of you will agree all four gave such a superb interpretation of the real life people they were playing. RIP Richard Attenborough (Christie), John Hurt (Timothy Evans) and Pat Heywood (Ethel Christie).
Very glad you went to the trouble of making a video about this rather classic 1970s film. A couple points worth noting are that this film is unique in a couple of ways: it has no soundtrack, by which I mean, any music in the movie is present in the action being presented (like a song on the car radio in the opening credits); second, it's the first film to use a home answering machine as a way of conveying information about a character, in this case an early scene with Jane Fonda. The answering machine soon became a favorite device of scriptwriters, but credit to China Syndrome for being first. The film has some odd moments that add to its charm, like the way Fonda comes home and tucks a turtle under her arm, an aspect of her home life that is never explained!
I am lover of the Beatles. I saw it in the cinema I was 10. I’m with you I didn’t really enjoy it and though I Appreciate it more now it is not the best film. Thanks as always
I enjoyed the cinematography in this film for its low warm analogue colour pallet of red, red-orange, orange and yellow-orange that creates a mood of passion, innocence, friendly, insecurity. It works well with the moody low lighting techniques of backlighting placed behind actors to define their features and distinguish them from the background and high-contrast dramatic effect by lighting the actors from the side to focus on the contours of their faces. I particularly loved the ambiance similar to other period films and dramas that use oil and gas lamps and candles that are visible in the scenes and soft lighting that creates very few bright but balanced harsh shadows such as in the final scene in the courtroom. The colour and lighting techniques do justice to the Victorian setting and costumes and I could almost smell the diseased flesh and litter in the streets and wooden furniture and tobacco in Sherlock Holmes office.
I remember seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show when they first premiered in the US, and later, saw this movie on television. As a very young fan at the time, I was both thrilled and excited by both. Richard Lester did a fine job with the film, and the 'boys' looked to be having a good time. Thanks for the review - it's been a long time since I saw 'Hard Days Night'.
This is one of the prime reasons the 60s is my favourite decade of film 🍿
Not much of a Beatles fan.
Do you have an instagram we can follow? Great review again
Great review. Just found your channel, will be supporting going forward 👍🏼
Thank you so much! That’s very much appreciated 😌🎥
Not a Beatles fan, but love this movie; funny and witty and irrelevant.
Irreverent I meant.
Great review. I love the Beatles but have never seen any of their films.
What a great pairing with Charles Bronson and James Coburn, two men at there best, Strother Martin was excellent in Hannie Caulder a revenge western from four years earlier. Incredible to think it was Walter Hills directorial debut as well, must have been daunting given the leads. Nice one mate, take care👍😃👍
Cheers Alan. I've still yet to see Hannie Caulder! That 88Films release looks quite tempting... Yeah this is a very solid debut and one of my favourite Bronson movies. Thanks again for checking out the video mate 👏📽
Another excellent review/overlook its a film I haven’t watched over and over in fact the last time would have been at least decade ago 😮 but it is next on the epics list as I’ve recently watched Ben-Hur and The Ten Commandments, epic sword and sandal movies are what bank holidays were made for. Take care mate👍😃👍
Thank you buddy, these huge epic movies are great but they are an undertaking when they are asking 3 maybe 4 hours out of your day to watch/re-watch. I guess that's why they play so well on those long Sunday afternoons.... take car mate.
Like the look of this one, haven't seen much of Charles Bronson I don't think even though it's a name I recognise 😊
Charles Bronson and James Coburn are 2: of my favourite actors of all time. x
You just made me go re-watch all of the fight scenes from this, you rascal. He was good. But he was no Philo Beddoe...
I have a very vague memory of this. In my mind it was a bit earlier than 75. But may have to watch it again. Thanks for the review as always
Rome is evil? Roma Aeterna Victrix!
“And I will show you ... where the Iron Crosses grow.” Best line of the film.
A neglected masterpiece.
Great film. Only ever watched it on tv. It is very long but worth watching. Thanks as always
Not only Blow Out, it also directly inspired Coppola's The Conversation.
