    Episode Notes:
    1. All games captured on real DC hardware via the Pack a Punch 480p RGB cable.
    2. Dolphin Blue and Maximum Speed have been released since I started this video.
    3. The Atomiswave is based on the Dreamcast/Naomi architecture. The main differences in all 3 tend to be amount of RAM and the version of the PowerVR used for its GPU.

    Only 3 out of the 8 games converted so far run on a Vanilla Dreamcast. Since the Atomiswave hardware is cartridge based, many games require a DMA (Direct Memory Access) channel and even the ones that don't may constantly read data from the cart during gameplay. The games requiring a DMA channel may never be converted to CDI format (required in order to be able to burn them to disc)
    Even the 3 already converted to CDI format experience some stuttering whenever the game needs to access data from the disc.
    These convesions are mainly designed to be run from an ODE like TerraOnion's M.O.D.E., USB-GDROM, GDEmu or Dreamshell with a hard drive interface.

I'm not sure if you showed us in the video and things you were saying were foreign to me. The idea of playing these games sounds great but if a viewer isn't sure how to play them it's a problem SLX. I noticed the download links you posted below the video. How do you convert the download code into the game? Even though the games are free I would like to see a professional (indie) release of these games you mentioned for the gamers who may not have the necessary equipment to enjoy these games, or the know how like myself. Manuals for all the games you mentioned would be necessary and especially for the fighting games. Gamers like myself want to know all the moves for each character if such information exists because there is no sense in playing a fighting game blind.
      Do you think a company like JoshProd would be up the work to give these games a better release since they have the setup and can do the editing to create the manuals for each game and the conversion onto a region free CD for the Dreamcast?

    • @RetroDawn
      @RetroDawn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As a game/software developer, I can assure that these qualify as ports. The system is different. Sure, that is mostly in the storage and access of the storage, but still differences that need to be accounted for in the code. Porting is when you take code that works on one system and change it to make it work on another. Sure, often it is used, in relation to games, as opposed to apps, for when there is a difference in CPU, GPU/graphics chip and/or sound chip, but that is not a pre-requisite for the term.
      Loosely, the term gets used when entirely new code is written from scratch to create a new program on another platform that resembles an original program (e.g. BITD, most versions of arcade games on console and computers, or even games written in assembly being remade for another system that uses a different CPU, and thus a different assembly language). But that is not a technically accurate usage of the term. Licensed clone, rewrite, or remake is technically more accurate.

    Those Arcade games you covered are awesome. Heck, I got Samurai Shodown VI (on my PS3, you can get plenty of SNK titles from the Japanese PS Store on PS3 and on PS4 and maybe PS5 as well but you can get but a Japanese account isn’t required unlike the PS3, also the PlayStation systems have shit tons of fighting games, I expect no different for PS5, I also really want a Yugioh fighting game on the system as well), the King of Fighters XI and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum and I have both for my PS2 and are damn awesome. Modern day J-fighters are just awesome and are pretty much perfect nowadays in terms of gameplay (you have zero issue pulling off moves as it is a matter of skill, blocking and movement are what you expect and the characters really catch your interest like they do for me, it would be very rare to see one that isn’t that hot these days as nearly all of them get so much praise and enjoyment from many players including myself and you see them in tournaments as well because they’re so good). It’s also worth mentioning that plenty of J-fighters especially in the modern age have awesome music, totally worth ripping and listening to on your MP3 player or smartphone, your car or burning onto a blank CD for your listening pleasure. But enough about that, as awesome as they are, the final boss of KOF XI frustrated me so much I had to cut down his HP (thank god for continue bonuses) because I just can’t beat him at full health unless I’m really lucky. And the final bosses of NGBC are also pretty damn tough as well with Goodman being an absolute dick. I just love frustrating as hell boss battles in fighting games, I hate those them so much I love it. I love these games that were on the PS2 (and 3 via JP Store) but I wonder why Sega didn’t even port these to the Dreamcast. Thank god for the homebrew community.

    I recently started getting interested in collecting arcade hardware for home use and the Atomiswave was one of the first ones on my mind when I heard about it. Many consider it to be a spiritual successor to the Neo Geo MVS and I totally agree. It has so many great games on the platform so it's really nice to see modders and homebrew developers giving the Atomiswave the attention it never got back in the day by porting its library to the Dreamcast. If there's one game I'd like to add to the wishlist it would be Dolphin Blue. The game itself looks amazing, like Metal Slug meets Waterworld if the movie didn't suck balls. However, the original cart is far too rare and expensive for us normies to afford and it never left the Atomiswave roster. My only issue is that the games can only be played if your using some kind of ODE. I have a decent physical collection I like to use so I'd rather keep my disc drive installed. I'll probably grab a second Dreamcast specifically to mod so I can play the Atomiswave games plus whatever homebrew is out there.

    • @SkyScourgeGod
      @SkyScourgeGod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You don't need to prove anything to me buddy. I already read the conversation you had with SegaLordX an hour ago, it's plainly obvious you don't like Atomiswave. Quite frankly I also don't care if my comparison pisses you off. I love and respect Neo Geo just as much as you do but the difference between you and I is I have an appreciation for all sorts of game hardware, not just the best. Go take your needless frustration out somewhere else.

    • @SkyScourgeGod
      @SkyScourgeGod 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @TrueSinister Once again you choose to argue with me without understanding what I said. I'm not as clueless about these facts as you think I am. I am well aware of the history for both of these machines. If I wasn't then I wouldn't have even cared to watch this video in the first place. First, go look up the meaning of "spiritual" successor. If you knew what that meant then you wouldn't have to feel so offended. If I said it was a literal successor than I'd understand your point, but we're not talking about the HyperNeoGeo64 now are we?
      A spiritual successor is something made in the "spirit" of something else in a similar manner usually by people who worked on the precursor to the subject at hand. A good example is an arcade game called H2Overdrive being a spiritual successor to Hydro Thunder despite the latter being much more successful, longer lasting and having more impact. H2Overdrive was very similar to Hydro Thunder and was created by many of the same Hydro Thunder developers from Midway.
      The same attributes can be applied to the Atomiswave vs the Neo Geo: SNK specifically chose to develop games for it after retiring the Neo Geo therefore has a few of its older properties on it, it was an arcade board that took interchangeable cartridges and runs through JAMMA all just like an MVS. It didn't have the same impact or lifespan as the MVS/AES, but that doesn't make it disrespectful to compare the two. You trying to say that it does just makes you sound like an entitled Neo Geo fanboy with something to prove.
      On the subject of you not liking Atomiswave, while its true that wasn't mentioned in your first comment to me I need to point out the fact that you wouldn't be so hellbent on arguing with me if you didn't have something to prove against it to the point where you read through comments just to pick mine to say "your comment pissed me off and I disagree with you". So one last time, as I previously mentioned in my last post, go take your needless frustration out somewhere else.

    • @SkyScourgeGod
      @SkyScourgeGod 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mr.vidjagamez9896 Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't thik that would be much of an issue for older consoles that aren't supported anymore. If it was for newer ones like the Switch, Xbox One or PS4 then yeah I can see that being an issue. But for discontinued consoles that their parent companies don't care about anymore, I doubt they would care if they ported those games to them. PCE Works does that with the PC Engine for rare and expensive CD titles. Sometimes they even have translations. Again, I may be wrong so feel free to correct me.

    • @RetrOrigin
      @RetrOrigin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately only games not requiring DMA channel work somewhat decently when burnt into a disc (and still have stuttering and loading issues). This is the main reason why only 3 out of all the 8 games already converted have CDI versions available.
      The original Atomiswave hardware is cartridge based, so in order to get them to work properly on a real Dreamcast you're better off loading them via ODE (Like GDemu, USB-GDROM or TerraOnion M.O.D.E.)

    • @SkyScourgeGod
      @SkyScourgeGod 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RetrOrigin That sheds quite a bit of light on the subject of a disc version. Though disappointing, I can't imagine how hard it would be to convert the game to a proper working CD. I'll probably just have to get another Dreamcast to mod with a GDemu, I want to keep my main Dreamcast stock because I collect and play a good number of physical games. The other option would be to make a good multicart for the Atomiswave, many of its best titles are really rare and expensive but the hardware isn't too bad if you hook it up to a decent Super Gun.

      For distributing on CD/GD, there'd be no difference with what you can do with DC homebrew. The DMA capabilities for quickly loading data in the background for ODE-exclusive games would add minorly-advanced extra capabilities. Like the difference between games running directly from CDROM on a PC vs being installed to a HD.

    I never actually realized (or clearly understood) Atomiswave was essentially Sammy/Sega simply reusing Naomi from the Dreamcast to make new arcade games.
    The fact they found a way to make it backwards compatible which shouldn't have been that hard I guess is both amazing and fantastic.
    To know that the Dreamcast lives on and lived on long after the demise of it's actual console makes me so happy and at the same time sad. What a golden age it could have been had things gone slightly better for the poor old Dreamcast. Sure the PS2 got ports but it's just not the same.

    • @RetroDawn
      @RetroDawn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I guess I should have suspected something cheap and dirty. Not that surprised but still I'm glad that at least it was used for something as opposed to just being tossed aside. The Dreamcast deserved better and at least it lived on in some capacity, at least for a little while anyway.

    • @RetroDawn
      @RetroDawn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JohnDoe-wq5eu I agree. I've never looked into it, but I can see how the extra RAM of the NAOMI just wasn't beneficial for 2D games, when they had large flash storage with DMA. Still, that amount of RAM was damn cheap 5 years later, when Atomiswave was released, and they had to develop this new system and dev system (including tools). Sure, it was minor differences made to the DC and DC dev kits, but there's still engineering and development costs that need to be offset by the marginally lower hardware costs compared to NAOMI.

    Sony did such a great job working with developers and offering their customers a great experience with the original PlayStation that just the thought of the PlayStation 2 was enough to keep a lot of gamers from even considering giving Dreamcast a chance.
