    Episode Notes:
    1. All games on real hardware.
    2. This episode was a mess from start to finish. My software Vegas kept crashing while trying to complete the edit. No matter what I tried, it crashed to the tune of 20+ times. I ended up having to drop the special effects back in some of the transitions and completely delete the PIP segments that showed all the KOF titles running at once for each machine. Only then did it complete.
    3. I always enjoyed playing Street Fighter 3, but it was never my favorite. I never enjoyed the roster and the end boss was the cheapest bastard in fighting history. Life bar replenishment should be a no no in any fighting game.
    4. The Saturn has nearly twice the fighting games of the Dreamcast. Check out segaretro.org for complete lists.
    5. I am partial to 2D fighting games, and that definitely played a roll in my decision.
    6. If you've never played Sokko Seitokai or Groove on Fight for the Saturn, do yourself a favor and try them.
    7. My daughter helped me capture a bunch of this footage. She is becoming quite the fighting game fan.
    8. I did not want to focus heavily on any one game in this epsisode. That's why I did the two Top 10 episodes, in fact. I wanted instead to look at the two libraries overall in order to get a bigger picture.
    9. I purposely stayed away from the controller debate. I prefer the Saturn pad in every instance, but I know the DC pad has its fans.
    10. While both these systems enjoyed incredible fighting game libraries, they both were eventually surpassed by the later systems. The PS2 had a massive library of them, and digital availability has made most of them easy to get nowadays. The Saturn still has the most that remain exclusive, however.

    Slight correction: Guilty Gear X didn't run at a higher resolution than most 2D games at that point, it ran at a higher res than all of them: it was the first ever 480p 2D game period. Prior to its release, only the character select screen of Cotton Boomerang had been natively rendered in 480p.

      @TheTrueBro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      People seem to be confused. Marvel vs Capcom 2 and Capcom vs SNK 2 do run at 640x480, however the only things that are actually displaying at that resolution are the backgrounds and the effects. Unfortunately the sprites are heavily upscaled and that's why you see too much pixelation on them. The same applies to a lot of 2D PC games back in the day (sure you could run them at the highest res of the time, but pixelation will still be there).
      Guilty Gear X, on the other hand, is a game that features everything rendered for that high resolution. No pixelation at all.
      So yeah, Guilty Gear X was the first 2D game of its kind (graphics wise). That game by itself saved the 2D games back then from being seen as "obsolete" and more developers kept on in that path (like Examu, Vanilla and etc)

    • @ItPutsTheLotionOnItsSkin
      @ItPutsTheLotionOnItsSkin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ridiculous comment. Toonstruck (1995) on the PC is 2D and 480p. That's *FIVE YEARS* before Guilty Gear X. Another is Leisure Suit Larry 7 (1996). Both are 2D point and click games, but they wasn't even the first 2D games to use 480p on PC. There's also a Japanese computer called the PC98 that ran many 2D games at _higher_ res than 480p before the DC was even released. By the time Guilty Gear X came out in 2000, 480p was low res by PC standards. I was gaming at 1024x768 on PC then, practically a "HD" resolution, although they were all 3D games because i wasn't in to 2D. Saying GGX is the first ever 480p 2D game is laughable and flat out wrong.
      So it's not even remotely close to being the first, but it was possibly the first _true_ 480p 2D *fighter* on console where the sprites and backgrounds are all 640x480 (480p), because as The True Bro
      pointed out above, other 2D fighters did use that res before GGX.

    @Harkness78 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    MvC2 is my favorite Dreamcast fighter, despite the presence of Soul Calibur and Powerstone and Project Justice. MvC2 is just the finest 2d fighter of all time.
    Favorite Saturn fighter is probably Virtual Fighter 2. Such sweet simplicity. I also really liked Fighting Vipers, Last Bronx, and the X-Men and Marvel Capcom fighters, never got to play the vs series on Saturn as I never imported, no ram cart.
    edit: as the video went on I could tell he was going to go with the Saturn, which is awesome and it is very close and that is a fine choice. But in that early neo-geo section, man I would rather play Last Blade and Mark of the Wolves forever on Dreamcast than any of that Fatal fury or king of Fighters crap on Saturn. Sometimes variety isn't enough, especially with fighting games. I would have gone with Dreamcast.

      Only lacks the imports games experience. As someone who imported Saturn games and DC games. I give the edge to DC as far as far as Fighters go.
      I think Saturn really does have better underrated fighting game gems. But the quality of DC fighters is still talked about all over the internet and for good reason.

    The Dreamcast was a dream for me as a fighting game fan. Just the Original Controller was not a perfect match, but there was a fantastic Arcade Stick and many alternative Controllers.
    Another great genre on the Dreamcast were Lightgun games. The Saturn had some too, but after the Namco Lightgun Shooters on PlayStation 1 and 2, the Dreamcast library was the best.

I know this was only a comparison of games, but I will say the Saturn controller was perfect for fighting games where as the Dreamcast controller was not. It's a small thing but worth mentioning, as one console was ready to go out of the box and the other almost required another accessory.

    Saturn SFZ3 wins over the Dreamcast version because of a very important detail:
    Gameplay wise it retains the feeling of the original CPS2 version. IIRC Saturn version uses the old 2D hit boxes for hit detection, while the Dreamcast uses some sort of polygon technique for this (altering all moves in some degree) and they also did some adjustments to the gameplay on purpose as some sort of "rebalancing", while the Saturn stayed close to the original.

    Can't fault anyone picking the Saturn, but for me it's the DC. DC has most of the games the fans of these series actually play. There's not much of an Alpha scene, but Third Strike has always been beloved. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 trumps basically every other Marvel game they ever made, nobody really goes back to the older ones that much. As far as the Neo Geo entries go, the KoF scene is entirely about '98 & 2002. The only thing the Saturn has to offer there is '97's story mode. And of course, Garou is still godly.

    Great video, SEGA Lord X. I appreciate your considered and fair response to this intriguing question and agree with your final decision. But, as you say, both systems have an abundance of awesome fighting games and I think anyone who loves the genre would be remiss not to own both consoles.
    Since you compared Capcom and SNK across both systems, I was hoping you would compare SEGA's fighters across both systems. Is this something you might do in a future video?
    A point also worth noting, which I think you could have added to your video, is that the Saturn pad is perfect for fighters, whereas the DC pad is shite. Yes, I know you can get other options for DC, and while many are good, none top the original Japanese Saturn pad.
