    Everyone who wants to hear a piece uninterrupted should go pull up the official version and watch that all by themselves. The whole point of watching a reaction is to see someone REACT. That means pausing, talking over, backtracking, whatever strikes them of their own way of appreciating (or not) a piece of music we ALREADY know and love. You go right ahead and pause and comment as you like.

      Instruments does take some skill to play. All of the members of Queen started playing instruments at the age of 7 or 8. They were good musician that is how Freddie Mercury was able to compose a song such a complex song as Bohemian Rhapsody. And it was damn difficult to record this song back in the day, the instruments were basically played live, and just recorded. They had to keep on bouncing the track to add overdubs. I don't know why you would mention autotune, there was no autotune in 1975.

    • @raine_wynd
      @raine_wynd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@ZENOBlAmusic To be clear, I'm not knocking Queen's or Freddie Mercury's brilliance, because they were/are f'n brilliantly talented. Just sayin' that Pentatonix is one of the examples I hold up for acapella when someone says "acapella can't sound as good as a full band." :-)

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Raine W. That is a strange comparison. To me it just seems like two different types of music. Just as you get choirs and soloist. They do put autotune on their vocals. They can obviously sing. But they cannot reproduce this exact sound in a live setting.

      @@thanksmr.obvious6427 It is Pentatonix. I adore Queen and always will. But Ptx has talent beyond Queens. A capella is incredibly difficult to do, & they do it seamlessly with no help from machines. They perform this live over & over. Queen never sang all parts of it live without prerecorded parts being played as well.

  • @pjschmid2251
    @pjschmid2251 4 ปีที่แล้ว +111

    Fun fact: Queen never performed all of this song live. In concerts they would start it from the point where the piano comes in and leave the stage at the operatic section and play a video much like the one you saw for that part. They would then return to the stage to do the remainder of the song. This is because they recorded the piece using layering and other studio techniques to create the sound. Pentatonix of course performs it live from beginning to end. When the Pentatonix recording came out Brian May posted a link to the video on his Facebook page with the comment “enjoy“.

      Joe H did you set them straight.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Queen never performed it live because they only had 3 vocalist. Pentatonix does lip sych live at times. Freddie's vision for the song was that it was choirs answering each other. He didn't want to do it live with only 3 vocalist it didn't match his original artistic vision of the song, where it is suppose to be two choirs answering each other. One choir is angelic or angles and the other choir are demons and evil. It is heaven and hell fighting over the soul of this guy. That is why Freddie specifically wanted a choir sound during the mock opera. If the song doesn't have the choir it loses it's meaning, that is how Freddie saw it. Queen always changed their studio versions from their live versions, so this was an important issue for him, otherwise he would just have changed the live version. They disliked repeating studio performances. Studio techniques? They used overdubs to create 2 choirs, the beginning is only Freddie who over dubbed himself. You realize these were not really studio techniques around. It was much easier for Pentatonix to record this song, with today's unlimited tracks and protools. They only 24 tracks for 180 vocal overdubs. And then the drums and guitars were overdubbed as well. It took incredible precision to record this song with only 24 tracks. The instruments basically had to be played live all at once so that it didn't take up too much place. There is actually a small drum mistake in one section because it was played live.
      The quality also degrade every time the track was bounced, to one track. The song was a masterful feat of execution at the time. The whole album was.

    Freddie Mercury is justifiably a rock legend, and I don't think anyone will ever top Queen's original of Bohemian Rhapsody, but I can almost guarantee that this is going to be the best cover of it you will hear. And to do it acapella makes it doubly impressive. More people are are prepared for the Spanish Inquisition than for Guitar Grassi!

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Queen themselves often mimicked other instruments with their voices, such as guitars, trombone, trumpets, viola, clarinet, tubas and even kazoo. In the middle section of this song Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor creates a jazz band with their vocals: th-cam.com/video/36nqGs_Dvws/w-d-xo.html (this is also a song acapella groups like to perfrom).
      Of course Pentatonix did a good job it is one of the better covers of the song. The best cover in my opinion is from Bruce Dickinson and Montserrat Caballe, the song is turned into a more metal version.

    There is symbolism behind the couch well known to long-term pentaholics. In their earliest days after winning a "recording contract" from the Sing-Off they got dropped after one EP by that contract company and left out on the street with no more than a smirk and the comment "There is no audience for an acapella group."
    They began to put their own videos out, but being mostly broke they recorded them just sitting and singing on their own and friends' couches. Editing was done in Avi's kitchen because he didn't have anything in there. One was recorded on someone's front door step, perhaps because they couldn't find a welcome couch? At any rate the image stuck. Several of their studio works are still done with them on couches, or at least chairs, in homage to their early broke years of getting their music out on their own with not a dime of income but thanks from their fans.

      To be fair they won their first two Grammys for arrangements. The arrangements were unique and innovative, much different from the originals. This song was performed intentionally with a great deal of faithfulness to the original version within the bounds of a cappella singing. Their third Grammy was for an a cappella performance of a classic done with the original artist. I just don’t see the judges giving a Grammy to a faithful cover of a famous song without any other type of innovation. And I definitely don’t see them ever giving a Grammy for any cover of this song, it’s too iconic.

    Bohemian Rhapsody holds a special place in my heart, not just because I love Queen so much, not just because PTX did a KILLER job honoring the legends, but also because I have a video of my then-4 year old singing it (and other Queen songs) in the backseat on our way home 😂

  • @margretrosenberg420
    @margretrosenberg420 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There are some things for which one can never be "prepared," and many of them are perpetrated by Pentatonix. Their rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody" is one such.
    Pentatonix loves Queen, and they always wanted to do a cover of "Bohemian Rhapsody," but they were afraid that they couldn't do it justice, so they decided to wait until they thought they were ready. That took *five years.* After that they still had to write their arrangement, choreograph, figure out how to motorize a couch, rehearse, and whatever else is involved in preparing to release a music video - judging by the dates that took them several more months, at least.
    It was worth the wait.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In the early days, after Pentatonix won _The Sing-Off_ and the recording contract that was supposed to be their prize, only to be dropped like a hot potato by the record label, a lot of the videos they filmed with their iPhones and posted to TH-cam simply showed five young people sitting on a couch, singing their hearts out. So the couch in this video is taking them on a trip down Memory Lane.
    The megaphone had nothing to do with Mitch's guitar solos; it was just a prop that Mitch thought would look cool and it's been confusing people ever since. The guitar solos are all Mitch, plus a microphone. (Yes, I did notice that you weren't taken in by the megaphone, but many people are, so it should always be pointed out.)
    * The starry night sky is a tribute to Brian May (of Queen), who has a doctorate in astrophysics.
    * The four shooting stars are for the four members of Queen.
    * The shot of Pentatonix lying together on the couch is meant to reference the cover art for Queen's _Sheer Heart Attack_ album.
    And when this was released, Dr. Brian May posted a link to it on all his social media accounts with a single word: "Enjoy."
It is incredible that PTX could do a rock anthem and sound as head banging as the original. If you get a chance, the 2018 movie Bohemian Rhapsody, about Queen and Freddie Mercury is really good, and it goes deep into how difficult it was to sell this 5 minute rock opera to the music industry.     I was 11 years old when the original Queen version of Bohemian Rhapsody was released, and I remember being blown away like no other time in my life the first time I heard it. I thought I would never get that amazing feeling again. Then I heard PTX's version the first time earlier this year. Let's just say that I want to eternally thank every member of Pentatonix for briefly taking me back to being that 11 year old kid again!!
