There's a live performance video of it by Imogen, too. It's fun to watch. But this was the first time I heard the studio version, and now we know where practically everything Mitch did came from! The PTX live performance is remarkably faithful to the Imogen studio recording.
That sound you heard during the running scenes is Avi doing overtone which is singing two notes at the same time. He’s well known for it and how he stands apart from most bass singers in acapella. Also helps making futuristic songs that seem impossible with just voices.
If you listen close in the Sing Off competition Avi used overtone in at least two of the songs they did. I was a little surprised that the judges didn't comment on it.
The story I've heard behind the live version: The previous song was a Kevin cello solo. Backstage during the cello solo, Mitch, who was suffering from jet lag, downed two cans of Red Bull. As the vocalists returned to the stage, Kevin (who was not part of the intro) was backstage putting the cello away. As they reached the conclusion of the intro, Avi SHREDDED the theater's sound system with that low note. Kevin returned to the stage as they began actually performing Aha, but the camera never got a shot of him. Then, Mitch's Red Bulls kicked in and he proceeded to go completely insane while Avi continued to joyously shred the speakers in the background. The result is what most Pentaholics now consider to be the best live performance of their career!
That was a perfect storm. Mitch was on fire, and Avi & Kevin were feeling it too. In the live version, I'm pretty sure Avi blew out some of the subwoofers with that powerful low note at the beginning, because all the bass was a bit fuzzy after that. Hearing the "Official" version before it give you an idea of what some of the bass/percussion riffs later in the song should have sounded like if the speaker damage distortion hadn't fuzzed it up.
Avi did blow the speaker. They started taking their own speakers after. I'm not sure how many speakers this group has blown. But I do know more than 2.
Thanks for the reaction. I kept hearing from the "Pentaholics" that their live performances were just as good if not better than the videos. I was skeptical until I bit the bullet and went to one of their live shows. I was blown away. They WERE better live, than in the videos. Their personalities and the "energy" made it a time I will always remember and cherish.
Imogen is just amazing. She won her first Grammy for Engineering/Producing that album. Her voice is also amazing. If people got to know her from Pentatonix or from that Jason Derulo track then that's amazing. ❤️

Often Pentaholics don't mention PTX Aha live in Singapore to new fans at 1st because they know they aren't ready for it yet. Avi going so low on the song before that he blew the speakers, & showing his overtones talent heavily, & Mitch doing Aha even better than the studio recorded version because he was just so into it is a lot to take in. The others doing their parts perfectly too. The level of performance the whole group does in this video is like an opera experience. 🙂

You should give Shallow with Kirsten singing lead, done in elegant black and white with Kevin on cello. You could compare these two. If you like Kirsten in the lead you should listen to Shallow, Say Something and Come Along. Come Along is a little out of the PTX repertoire as it is very colorful, all members sing but Kirsten is lead, the set and clothes are so colorful and the theme is sort of magical. It’s worth watching!
Video certainly has better quality, both visually and the fact that there are no blown speakers, but it doesn't have the energy of the live performance.

I'd actually never heard that version before, and now that I have... it's solidified for me how much I love Pentatonix's version WAY BETTER! (Sorry Imogen love, you gave it a good shot, but you were up against Pentatonix, so...) Oh, and the weird noise that Avi made in the middle is an example of his 'overtone singing' ability, where he sings two notes at the same time. (There's a video of him demo-ing it with 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' - a search on TH-cam should bring it up. It will blow your mind!)
Avi and his overtone singing. He produces a low note then plays around with the harmonics producing this second bell like note floating above... He does it and sings the lion sleeps tonight using the bell notes only. You need to check out the video. It's fairly short.
Ooh! I have never heard the original. I think the live performance tracks more with Imogene's version than with the PTX official. There's something...urgent in both versions.
I think the "noises that come out of their mouths" was Avi doing overtones. Search on Avi Kaplan, Overtone Singing, Lion Sleeps Tonight (or something like that). It's pretty amazing. On the live, that wasn't best audio quality, but shows how into it they were. There is another live in Orlando April 2016 I like better only because you can see all of them on stage, plus some of the stage display lights set up. Check it out sometime when you have a chance, even if not a reaction. Also, I actually had never heard Imogen Heap's original version. Interesting. TBH, neither is what I would listen to day-to-day, but definitely like the PTX version better and shows off their talents.
It seems like a credible and reasonable story. But I haven't heard from anyone who was there at the time. In the early days they seemed to be drinking Red Bull a lot. They were even drinking them during Livestream sessions. I saw one interview where Scott said he stopped drinking them after the crash hit him while he was on stage.
You should react to all three...Imogene Heap, then PTX official cover, THEN the live performance in Singapore!! ...should be a triple play, don't you think?
@@UncleJon Actually, you DO get 3 "different" ones in this case... PTX original is an early video and complete, then their live performance in Singapore is a shorter and priceless clip taken on a fan's phone where Mitch goes above and beyond!

• Imogen Heap original: You weren't wrong about "Aha!" being creepy; that's obviously the same take Pentatonix has on it. • Pentatonix official video: The trunk of the car is presumably where they put the couple they kidnapped from the house. • Singapore, the Star Vista: 12:29 Avi's low note blows the *first* speaker. Meanwhile, Kevin is finally back from putting his cello away (he'd been playing it just before) and we see Scott and Mitch move to their left to make room for him, though the camera never actually shows us Kevin. The classical piece they'd just been singing was a time-filler to let Kevin get back. Mitch is feeling jet lagged, so just before this he drank *two* Red Bulls, which was arguably one Red Bull too many, and the caffeine and sugar cut in just as he starts singing "Aha!," so everyone concentrates on Mitch going hyperactive in his upper register. And they never even notice that Avi is still singing low notes into his microphone (talk about creepy!). The sound quality on this video is iffy for *two* reasons: 1. It's a fan video, filmed with someone's phone, and has all the limitations of that phone, whatever those limitations are. 2. Avi's still singing low notes, and blowing out more speakers all the time Mitch is singing. That's my favorite part of this performance, Avi systematically destroying the house sound system while everyone is distracted by Mitch.
I’d LOVE if they did a new studio version of this since they’ve made such amazing improvements over the years. I don’t know if they still do it without Avi. Or just a good-quality current live performance video would do.

I third them! Especially "Starships" - it's baby PTX (their first video), Avi does his overtones in it, and the video is just cute. Plus, it's so old that very few reactors do it.

On the live stage version, I believe that Avi actually blew out the bass speakers on this one; something he's done on more than one occasion.

Avi and his overtone singing. He produces a low note then plays around with the harmonics producing this second bell like note floating above... He does it and sings the lion sleeps tonight using the bell notes only. You need to check out the video. It's fairly short.

Ooh! I have never heard the original. I think the live performance tracks more with Imogene's version than with the PTX official. There's something...urgent in both versions.

Ah, yes, PTX, Vol. 1, when they tried making videos with a storyline. They didn’t do that again except for one Christmas album song.
I think the "noises that come out of their mouths" was Avi doing overtones. Search on Avi Kaplan, Overtone Singing, Lion Sleeps Tonight (or something like that). It's pretty amazing. On the live, that wasn't best audio quality, but shows how into it they were. There is another live in Orlando April 2016 I like better only because you can see all of them on stage, plus some of the stage display lights set up. Check it out sometime when you have a chance, even if not a reaction. Also, I actually had never heard Imogen Heap's original version. Interesting. TBH, neither is what I would listen to day-to-day, but definitely like the PTX version better and shows off their talents.
Who here knows if the story of Mitch drinking a couple Red Bulls before this concert to combat jet lag is true or not?
If you look at the songs earlier in that concert he is jumping up and down at times when there is no musical need for him to jump up and down.
I've heard he drinks multiple energy drinks sometimes. It wouldn't surprise me
It seems like a credible and reasonable story. But I haven't heard from anyone who was there at the time.
In the early days they seemed to be drinking Red Bull a lot. They were even drinking them during Livestream sessions.
I saw one interview where Scott said he stopped drinking them after the crash hit him while he was on stage.

@@UncleJon Actually, you DO get 3 "different" ones in this case... PTX original is an early video and complete, then their live performance in Singapore is a shorter and priceless clip taken on a fan's phone where Mitch goes above and beyond!

12:29 Avi's low note blows the *first* speaker. Meanwhile, Kevin is finally back from putting his cello away (he'd been playing it just before) and we see Scott and Mitch move to their left to make room for him, though the camera never actually shows us Kevin. The classical piece they'd just been singing was a time-filler to let Kevin get back.
Mitch is feeling jet lagged, so just before this he drank *two* Red Bulls, which was arguably one Red Bull too many, and the caffeine and sugar cut in just as he starts singing "Aha!," so everyone concentrates on Mitch going hyperactive in his upper register. And they never even notice that Avi is still singing low notes into his microphone (talk about creepy!).
The sound quality on this video is iffy for *two* reasons:
1. It's a fan video, filmed with someone's phone, and has all the limitations of that phone, whatever those limitations are.
2. Avi's still singing low notes, and blowing out more speakers all the time Mitch is singing. That's my favorite part of this performance, Avi systematically destroying the house sound system while everyone is distracted by Mitch.
As soon as the live version started, I had to turn my own speakers down, so Avi didn't blow mine out too. *lol*
That spacey sound is Avi singing overtones.
I’d LOVE if they did a new studio version of this since they’ve made such amazing improvements over the years. I don’t know if they still do it without Avi. Or just a good-quality current live performance video would do.

I third them! Especially "Starships" - it's baby PTX (their first video), Avi does his overtones in it, and the video is just cute. Plus, it's so old that very few reactors do it.
