    I wish at some point in the future conversion kits become common. There could be a major tipping point in converting gas vehicles to EVs.

    • @kirkellis4329
      @kirkellis4329 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Indeed. In any big city you will find dozens of cars for sale that are under 20 years old but have a bad engine or transmission or stolen catalytic converters but are otherwise in great shape for under $5K, sometimes under $2K. A $10K kit that included a carrier that bolted directly into where the engine and trans went, weighs the same including batteries and motor, then cable connections that spoof all the signals the car's computer expects, and a conversion could get down to a couple of hours labor and no special fabrication.

    • @leiflillandt1488
      @leiflillandt1488 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This will happen in the next future!
      There is already a French company that sells kits for some car models.
      Then there are DIYers who build there own electric cars out of parts from scrap yards! But they need not buy cars that are more than 40 years old! An BMW from 2005-2012 with a broken engine or transmission cost 500-1000 USD... And then you have a body without rust, and I think it will be cheaper to start with a rear wheel drive car.

      Interested parties need to start new EV conversion companies pretty damn quick. There's loads of them around already. Probably the two most well known are "Electric Classic Cars" [type that title into TH-cam search for videos] in the UK, and "EV West" in California [type that too].

    I had this idea over 10 years ago when I was driving behind a classic car that stank really bad. I still believe it might be a good idea for us to take a used car that we like, Lexus 460LS or a Mercedes S class or any other non-tiny car and convert it to electric. It's better for the environment too instead of ordering a new one.

    I'd love a kombi electrified and there are a few running around - $60-80K from scratch isn't too bad as a classic kombi is in the same range so finding an old chassis and starting from scratch might be the go

    Talk about a sleeper, no oil changes, no smog, torque for days! The first time I did an electric conversion was on a Geo Metro back in college with the help of my auto instructor and classmates. We used lead-acid batteries and kept the manual transmission. It was was primitive, simple, yet functional. That was in 2009, 14 years ago. Seeing this video Viking inspires me to do my own EV conversion project someday. I've swapped and built an ICE before, an EV swap/build would be fun too.

    Hey Sam, thanks for this video. I would like to see more stuff about hobbyist conversions. I live in the US, and I'm clinging to my '81 VW T3 Kombi. It was my bucket list car and I've had it 5 years now. It still has the 2.0 air cooled boxer that left the factory with about 70 horsepower, but I have loads of real estate for components. I can't afford a full blown hot rod restomod, but want to keep it rolling and socially acceptable on a budget.

    I have an old vw vanagon, and I’m desperate to convert it. Prices are steep… but an ID buzz, both pop top or high top is looking to be around €70,000- that would be a very nice conversion budget! A long range Bev camper is years away, so conversion actually makes sense if I want something now. Only issue is range, but with fast charging options for retrofits, things are looking more and more possible!

    Contrast these conversion costs with what Damien Maguire spends on his. Damien has converted several older BMWs for under $10K. That doesn't include his labor and he uses previously owned and scrounged parts, but it shows that you can do a conversion for MUCH less than outfits like this.

    If I had a Sbarro Challenge or an Isdera Imperator or a repl. of a Mercedes C111, i would think about it, but if I think about the investment like this on a Porsche 924/944 or so, I would say for this (car plus the E-invest) you get a self driving Model 3...

    I don't know about this. Why would you spend $32,000 converting an old clunker to electric when you can buy a brand new Tesla model 3 for $48,000? If they could cut the price of the conversion in half, then they would have something.

    • @4literv6
      @4literv6 ปีที่แล้ว

      3-5 year's for that severe of a price cut. Conversions take labor&time to engineer plus source everything used in them.

    • @kirkellis4329
      @kirkellis4329 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@4literv6 At Tesla investor day, they mentioned their new drive unit cost -- motor+reduction gear diff+inverter -- will be under $1K. That is a ridiculously low cost. If some third party wanted to mfr in qty for conversion kits and could sell that package for even $3K (Ford Eluminator was $4K + $2K inverter), that would be a big step.

    • @4literv6
      @4literv6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kirkellis4329 I agree, problem is convincing a manufacturer to do so and in the tens or hundreds of thousands of unit's each year. 🤔
      I think using cad, 3d printing&scanning tech plus higher end composites. You could even make drop or bolt in battery pack's to replace the engines&go into the trans tunnels on conventional powered swaps. Using tubular k members would also allow for easier conversions.
      Imagine a shop setup using all that to make swap/bolt in battery pack with a motor/controller&inverter kits for different year popular vehicle's.
      Then places like aem and their new ev division Holley high voltage making bms and controller kits a more budget and diyer friendly solution.
      We could really see the conversion market take off using just tech we have available to us TODAY.
      Just used in a much more user friendly cohesively designed manner. I'm thinking like electric classic cars has with their engineered and bolt in ev swap kits anyone can buy for various vehicle's&diy. Obviously a bloody good bit cheaper than them though and made at the tens of thousands not just dozens of kits a year scale. Oh the possibilities that come to mind for modern elektromods. 🤔

    • @kirkellis4329
      @kirkellis4329 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4literv6 If the world ran out of oil suddenly, then there would be such a rush to convert existing ICE cars, otherwise there won't be enough demand to justify the engineering required for a drop-in replacement for the wide variety of vehicles favored by what amount to hobbyists.
      Which is a shame, because I can envision a drop-in cradle that uses the existing engine mounts and replaces the engine and trans and includes maybe 30kwh of battery modules along with inverter and charger and replacement HVAC all in the cradle. With optional 30kwh packs that fit under the seats inside the car. Giving people the option of going up to 90kwh total. A complete enough package might need just 2 hours to remove all the ICE systems from a car and another hour to bolt in the complete replacement modules and connect a wiring harness that spoofs all the engine signals the car's original computer needs to run the dash, ABS, airbags, etc. That "virtual engine" in software would be the only thing different from vehicle to vehicle along with wiring harness adapters and driveshaft adapters.

    This is very cool, but it’s not practical. When you buy a new electric car it will come with a lot of safely features and it will have been crash tested. If you have a lot of money to burn and you want a classic car that looks great and goes fast, then this might be an option. I think the future of this is kits for converting certain very popular cars that might make it in the ballpark of affordable.

In hindsight that Mickey Mantle baseball card would probably pay for our grandson's college education. Silly me.

    Exactly right. People no longer have to give up their old beautiful cars. Let’s face it design went from artistic to functional over the last 50 years. With some small respites the cars of the 50’s through 70’s were just better looking. I can’t wait for the day that NYC has a fleet of those old yellow taxis from the movies. Only now they are fiberglass and electric and silent. No need to keep the horn on them while you are in there though.

    Sorry, but this is nonsense. Who wants to replace a V8 with an e-motor? It's no longer a classic car after that move. The typical V8 rumble is gone. The feel of the classic muscle car is raped.. Better try to let the classic V8 run on synthetic e-fuel.

    Not a chance. I have a classic car and it will stay as it is.

    No longer a classic car so future price will be a lot less than an original. E fuel’s will guarantee the originals will keep a better resale value.

      @@richarda996 Dumbest comment I've seen in a while, ABS and airbags are basic safety features that save thousands of lives globally a year, they are not a hassle you have to deal with, they just sit there in the background waiting to save you when you or another driver does something stupid...
