Really proud of these young people getting this experience in conversion. It is great seed to plant for their futures in making us a more sustainable species in so many ways. Cheers, and thank you Sam for this interview.

Thanks Sam.🙂 It's not so much about converting the car, but more about keeping an example of the model on the roads in excellent condition, both legally and with less damage to the environment. Upcycling, if you prefer. As he said, a rusting wreck can be returned to usability, safely, and that has to be better than making another vehicle.
That young lady at the end reacted very well to having a microphone suddenly thrust towards her by a stranger. My wife would have clammed up and refused to respond. Kudos to her.

A lot of these old relics are death traps. So much engineering work has been going on throughout the years to protect occupants that I'd never allow a teenager daughter or son to risk their lives for a cool look.
In fact, when I was a teenager and still taking busses, I witnessed an accident with a VW Kombi like that one in the background of the video, when the driver couldn't stop in time and hit the back of a bus that had suddenly stopped at the bus stop where I was.
Although it was a low-speed crash and the Kombi only got the front panel moved in about a foot, the lack of ABS, air bags, active restraint systems, and crumple zones led to a completely preventable death.
He had no external injuries, but his abdomen got crushed by the steering wheel and he bled internally for over 20 minutes, waiting for emergency services to show up and extricate him.
Today, as a mechanical engineer who worked in the automotive sector with new vehicles development, I recommend that you keep these cars off the road and in museums where they belong.

Excellently worded intelligent response to this subject. I love classics, I would not drive one though nor own a restomod or elktromod because of exactly what you mentioned. I'm hoping though in the near future? Ev platforms that are much more modular in design.
Will allow for interchangeable top hats kind of like old school coach builders once did. Where the chassis and powertrain is all sorted out already, and you ad the body&your own interior design or features to it. So you would have the best parts for power, battery, chassis tuning, braking&traction control all sorted. But you could build a nicer or more stylish interior and maintain a classic exterior.
Almost like pinninfarina did on rimacs c2 chassis with the Batista. Which is a stunning hyper ev vs the nevera which to me isn't stunning at all. But it's the exact same chassis, battery and powertrain used between them.
Or charge cars with their 67 mustang who built a modern ev platform up and put new classic sheet metal over it. 😎

When thinking of secure vehicles, I have driven more than 100,000 by motorcycle, most of the miles with a BMW K 1600 GT 2011.
In how many accidents are these 40 years and older cars involved in each year?
Who are engineering the cars in USA as they have so incredible high death rates compared to Sweden, and some other European countries per 100,000 people.
Sweden with 10.5 million people have 200-230 deaths per year!

    • @rogerbritus9378

@@leiflillandt1488 That VW Kombi I cited was not made in America and while Volvo and Saab led in the development of safe cars decades ago (and I had both last century), today Tesla is an example to follow. And motorcycles have a much higher death rate than cars. Better avoid.

How about we just don’t leave the house . That’s way more safer than driving any car .

I often hear folk knocking the old 2 door V8 RR but my '78 vintage never broke down despite me treating it like a Racing Car bug the best vehicle I've ever owned for 90,000 miles was a 1986 ex MoD 90" Land Rover with the slow boring 2.5 natural aspirated diesel. I kid you not, it never ever broke down and gave me 32 mpg.

I had a 10year old Range Rover back in the 80's in middle east, even had the dreaded label "British Leyland" on it, even had a starting handle. However I must have been lucky as I ran it 3+ years on and off-road with zero issues. Regretfully had to sell it when I left the region. (I am guessing it was a mid-week vehicle, not a Monday or Friday assembly 🤨

Although we love the new tech & new cars arriving on the market, we're not sure how green their manufacturing is (& even if countries run them on green electricity). The best solution to the former, is conversion from ICE to EV. Why aren't Nissan Leaf ZE0s getting upgraded battery tech? and why aren't we seeing regular cars (not just classic cars) getting converted? There should be startups (& colleges) everywhere all over this.

Sam.......I don't know if u are aware of it but some of the first evs of the modern era.......1960-1970s.........were gas cars converted to electric. I remember early environmentalists bought corvair s........horrible gas cars.......featured in the classic book by Ralph Nader........unsafe at any speed......and put in an electric motor. Filled with heavy lead acid batteries the car did not have great performance.....!!!!!...?Also the predecessor of the Prius was a conversion of a gas car. Some auto magazine put the large electric motor that turns over jet engines in a small compact car. The motor had enough torque to work. Just a few wet battery's were in the car to poercthe motor.........too many battery's would have weighed down the car. A small two cycle motor would come on to charge the battery s..lkll!!!.....I hink the magazine may have gn car and driver.....I had a copy of the issue but lost it. American idea.......but Japanese product years later......pity...... barbuto@optonline.net...
