I had to use cheats to complete this game as a dumb kid. I also spent a large portion of the game playing as a generic enemy goon skin that the cheat list referred to as "Knuckles" because I actually thought I'd get to play as Knuckles the Echidna. The image of this random adult man embracing MJ in the ending is forever burned into my memory.
As a NYer, who just finally went to Coney Island this past weekend: yes it’s all true. There are goons everywhere in the city and the amusement park is full of danger. If not for Spider-Man, we would all be struggling.
In the GBA games continuity, Norman is actually alive, since MJ mentions that him and his goons are in jail, so i'm guessing that the glider just knocked him down. (Before you mention it, in the Spiderman 3 GBA game theres no mention of Harry being new goblin to avenge his father's death, he just... Suddenly appears for like 2 levels and then doesn't appear in the game anymore.)
I remember I used to play this game all the time. I tried to play it on Super Hero difficulty a few times only to find out that it's practically impossible because the standard thug enemies are even tougher than Spider Man.
I adore this game and to me it's kind of a conclusion to the Spider-Man games that started on the PS1 considering the fact that it has essentially the same gameplay just more advanced.
It's the same engine! Fun fact: there's actually four games in the series. Spider-Man PS1/Dreamcast/PC, Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, Spider-Man: The Movie: The Game, and Spider-Man 2 PSP. This one actually entered production as Spider-Man 3, the sequel to Enter Electro, but when the movie came about they swapped it to being the movie game. And since the PSP couldn't do the open world, they just made another one for Spider-Man 2.
@@PosthumanHeresy that is interesting and yeah I actually own Spider-Man 2 on psp and you're right it plays the same as well I didn't even think about it, it slipped my mind lol. Although funnily enough the PSP could actually do an open world because Spider-Man 3 was on the psp and it was free roam and was basically the same as the ps2 and wii versions.
Coming from spiderman the pc port of the ps1 game. This game was miles ahead. I would not agree with most of what was said. It could be nostalgia. However i distinctly remember that this game required a dedicated graphics card with harware t&l which is hardware transformation and lightning ps dont judge me. I had a riva tnt2 and this game refused to run on my pc. But as a kid when i finally played it, i remember how much of an upgrade it was to spiderman 1. Good times.
@@igotyou62darthvat Yeah, I played it on PC a few years after release and I just cant fuck with the PS1 textures. Monster Ock on PC was pure nightmare fuel.
My father used to bring me GBA games from overseas (bought at a bootleg market in China), while being on a business trip. I was somewhat blown away by the pseudo-3D swinging sections in the GBA versions as a kid.
My first experience of this game was watching a bonus feature on the DVD for the movie. It was "Tips for the first 3 levels of Spiderman the video game." As a kid I would just watch it over and over again because I didn't have the game. I did eventually get the game and found out some of tips weren't that helpful.
I feel it's worth mentioning that the PC version's controls, while strangely splayed on the keyboard, made certain aspects a lot easier. Using the refined web-zip aiming and surveying levels from a high vantage point was far more intuitive. Also, the key thing to harness against Spike's gang are your web-attacks. While Spike himself is pretty savvy to these moves, his goons are far more susceptible to things like Web Dome and Web Pull. And a little bit more on the Harry Osborn alt-campaign - it's actually based on the original voice dub before they got the actors from the film to reprise their roles. As such, Josh Keaton (later Spectacular Spider-Man's VA) had his dub reworked to be Harry Osborn going up against a Hobgoblin with a full alternate script. The only thing missing were new cutscenes, which the team didn't have time for. Multiplayer also almost made it in, but the only aspect of it that survived was Web Bowling, one of several pieces of Challenge Mode content you can play besides the main game. There's even an Oscorp Arena mode that has exclusive enemies cut from the main game.
Had no idea about Josh Keaton voicing Spider-Man originally in the movie game, that's awesome, thanks for sharing that fun fact. I just assumed that he played Harry because James Franco was busy/too expensive to get.
I was literally thinking yesterday that this would be a good game for you to cover, and suddenly here it is! Brings back so many memories seeing these levels again. My favourites were the ones outside where you could swing around the city. Also, as you mentioned, this was a tough game. I was never able to beat it without cheats. Hope you cover the second one next. That's an all-time favourite of mine!
There's actually a really funny thing about the original release of this game and that's you can unlock MJ as a playable skin and when you beat the game Mary Jane would make out with her taller self. This was taken out of the greatest hits release unfortunately.
Can’t tell you how many times I played this on PS2. Was really obsessed with it and the movie around the time they released. Was only 11 years old, so it’s no surprises lol
I remember having a lot of fun with the PC version because some of the same guys worked on the PS1 game and it had a lot of the same moves. Up until the Oscorp building mission. The instant death stealth and guards with way too much health used to freak me out. The GBA version's Shocker fight also requires you to wait for him to taunt you to do any damage. That's all I remember.
0:21 He also had a motorbike. He was a Kamen Rider and a solo Power Ranger at the same time. -Even though his megazord was actually before Super Sentai had them and the only Super Sentai at the time was Gorenger because JAKQ wouldn't even be considered one until much, MUCH later.-
There was a live action American TV show in the last 70s too. Its where the meme of "Yes, Peter I am you and you are me. And this is a gun." comes from.
I played this game all the time on my GameCube when I was a kid back in the early 2000s. Those OsCorp levels still haunt me in my nightmares to this day XD.
Flandrew, you are awsome and you keep on giving us nostalgic memories. I glad to support your channel since the beginning. Keep up the good work. Maybe you should do a live stream and talk to us while you play video games, I would join in and watch
9:54 Pretty sure those are ED300s. They've certainly come a long way from ED209. Either that or they figured out how to suppress the human part of robocops.
Technically there was an American version Spider-Man Live Action tv series too it was called “The Amazing Spider-Man” it aired around the same time as the Japanese version. I still own this game on the original XBOX, it was my 1st XBOX game. Whenever I played the game I usually liked to use the Sam Raimi suit or Alex Ross suit when I played as Spider-Man. I also remember alot of the cheat codes in the game.
I had this game on the PS2 and I never finished it as a kid since the controls/camera were so wonky. Such a relief to see what the rest of the game was and that it wasn't just me who thought the game was lackluster for its time. Another banger Flandrew!!
No, the controls and camera are pretty straightforward and move the way they need to. The game wasn’t “lackluster,” not even “for its time.” It’s a pretty competent way of adapting the film’s plot into a video game while adding extra set pieces to spice things up.
I’m so glad you covered this game! It’s one of my favorites from my childhood! If you’re looking for a quick one-off, you could always compare the different version of the Teen Titans games on console/handheld. I’d love to hear your review of them!
As someone who lives in New York, I can confirm that generic goons do inhabit city rooftops. Seeing them chill out on non-flat rooftops are especially a sight to behold.
My sister and I were stuck on the Oscorps infiltration level forever as kids, and we eventually just never went back into it. I was too freaked out by the killer robots and the blaring alarms every time I was detected, and I was confused about what I was even supposed to do or which computers to access. I was always too scared fo facing more robots to stick around to figure it out. All these years, I never knew what followed the beginning of that level and now that I know that it only escalates from there, I can't imagine my 8-year-old self would ever have been able to get through it. You're right that the controls for that game were not intuitive. I had always thought I just sucked lol, but you had the same problem as me always accidentally swining onto the ceiling or struggling with the camera. I really won't say I have fond memories of this game, not even good nostalgia. But we also played the GBA version and were always taken in by the charm of its distinctive art style and audio effects.
I love this game! I replayed it a lot, just for fun, after solving it. Except the espionage at Oscorp level, which I skipped once I had the ability to do so. I loved all the voice acting, costumes, combos, codes(especially Organic Webbing) and playing as Green Goblin. I even enjoyed the tutorial and bowling. I have the Gamecube version.
I remember watching SGB's playthrough of the game and listening to them have a good time with it, whether that be the Oscorp stealth missions or the Goblin fights. Personally, I think the lack of an open world New York is faulty, but the boss fights are sound and the extras are great.
I'm a student at the University of Michigan, and we just recovered from a campus-wide Internet outage, and I've gotta say, watching this video was definitely worth the wait. Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see your videos for the rest of the Spider-Man movie tie-in games!
This game and the movie it was based on were great, I loved the raimi movies! Would love to see a future video on web of shadows or the 2000 Spider-Man game!
Wonder if Kraven and Scropion will be in the MCU anytime soon? We've had Vulture, Shocker (albeit not in his iconic outfit), Mysterio and the Electro, Doc Ock and Green Goblin from the past movie continuities and Mac Gargan is in the MCU but he hasn't become Scorpion. We know Sony has been planning a Sinister Six movie and that Morbius, the MCU Vulture and presumably Venom will be a part of the team but beyond that we really don't know anything.
i remember never being able to do the oscorp espionage mission. every other level you can pretty much mash your way through, but that one required more patience than a five-year-old has, so I would always just skip it haha
Phenomal quality video as always, I really appreciate all the humour and references always thrown in :D Personally also played the PS2 version to death as a kid, the Shocker subway section used to terrify me
They had this game at a kids’ barbershop I used to go to, you’d play video games or watch stuff while they cut your hair. I remember Peter going “I need to track down Uncle Ben’s killer” but that’s it.
As a New Yorker, yes. There are goons on every rooftop in New York. They do take breaks on Sundays. So if you want to go on a rooftop tour of the city, Sunday is the day to do it.
As a child, I played Spiderman 1 and 2 on an old computer. A year ago, when I was 18 years old, I passed the Xbox versions of these two wonderful games. I played on Xbox 360 for backward compatibility, since I do not have the original Xbox.
If the Japanese one doesn’t count, then why doesn’t the 70s one starring Nicholas Hammond count. That was the TV show that ran for a bit and it had multiple movies that depending on your place in the world had theatrical releases. So yes the 1970s amazing Spider-Man was the first live action theatrical Spider-Man movie.
OMG FINALLY 😍 I was hoping so long that you would cover these Games! 😍They literally were my childhood! i would love to see an Episode about the 2nd and 3rd installment!
I grew up borrowing the GC version from a friend, but the game I owned was the GBA version. To this day, I have not been able to beat it. Even going back, the timed levels give me crazy anxiety and make the bomb levels a pain to get through. I usually give up by the second Kraven fight.
I heard the script they were given during the making of this game didnt include the final fight after the bridge. According to them it all happened on the bridge in the script
I was surprised when I learned that the Vulture va for this game is the same one for Insomniac’s Spiderman game. Also I recently replayed this game just this year and found the camera much more manageable when you make sure to always reset it.
When I was a kid, I would just play the tutorial then web sling around New York. I don’t think I completed a single mission. The magic of being Spider-Man was enough to make it an instant childhood classic, no matter how jenky the controls are
I just want to say. There was another live action adaptation of Spider-Man before this. It even got movies. It was connected to the Hulk TV show and even had Daredevil appear along with Kingpin. It wasn't a bad series. I suggest a watch, if not a full watch of the show, at least to see how Spider-Man looks in live action with an American studio behind him
Great video, as always! How about an honorary mention video of Neversoft's Spider-Man? Even though it was based on comic books rather than the movies, I'm sure that game was a part of many people's childhood, including mine!
I'm only familiar with the GBA version. That being said, there is an audio glitch in the double pack version with the second game--after you select Spider-Man 1 from the menu, the first game's opening movie will start, followed after a few seconds by the audio that should've been playing from the start. For whatever reason, adding the second game on the cartridge introduced audio lag _only_ in that one part of the first game. That being said, for the longest time the GBA version's OST was impossible to find, but now you can find quality rips here on TH-cam. Its actually much shorter than you'd think. Here: th-cam.com/video/c_Nj9IPWE3A/w-d-xo.html
HOW? How do you always pick the games so tightly connected to my childhood in these (well I’m very basic… maybe that’s it ). God you literally are one of the best on TH-cam
I have fond memories of this because (WARNING: Old Man reminiscing incoming) I rented it as like a 13 year old kid from Blockbuster. I never actually beat it, just messed around with the codes and eventually played through the game as Harry Goblin before I had to return it. Just good, fun memories from my childhood.
You were great and lovely as always. I'm looking forward to comparing Toy Story 3 and Lego Harry Potter Year 7 and spider man 2/3/web of shadows/the amazing spider man 1 and James bond quantum of solace versions Video.
I only played this game once when I was like 17 or something like that, I forgot a lot of things that this video helped me remember, I played the Gamecube version and it was really nice in my opinion, for some reason that failure screen when it said "MJ died" made me feel way worse than I was expecting to feel lol.
Christmas 2005, I was 4, I received my very first videogames and console, a GBA advance with spiderman 1+2 and sonic genesis (I loved that port as a kid)
I was thinking “why don’t I remember Robopuppy considering I’ve seen Futurama over and over again?”. Because it’s from Jurassic Bark. That’s why. An episode I watched once and refused to ever watch again.
Flandrew - “… then you grew up playing Spider-Man the movie, the game.” Me - “but which one?” Flandrew - “the year was 2000.” Me - “No no. Flandrew you missed the line!” As someone who puts these videos on repeat as a happy background sound whilst I do stuff around the house, you’ve conditioned me to that line. 🤣 My brain struggled for a moment without it.
You forgot to mention the best part of the game: THE BOWLING ALLEY! Which also shows up as an enterable location in Spider-Man 2 (it's in Upper East Side)
I had to use cheats to complete this game as a dumb kid. There was a Spider-Man TV show in 1977. Not to mention, he was on The Electric Company.
I was surprised when I learned that the Vulture va for this game is the same one for Insomniac’s Spiderman game. Also I recently replayed this game just this year and found the camera much more manageable when you make sure to always reset it.
In Spiderman 2002 movie the final fight between Spiderman and the green goblin in the abandoned hospital in new York city not in the grave yard
I suggest a watch, if not a full watch of the show, at least to see how Spider-Man looks in live action with an American studio behind him
Bro js out here restoring my childhood memories one game at a time thanks man
Great video, as always!
How about an honorary mention video of Neversoft's Spider-Man? Even though it was based on comic books rather than the movies, I'm sure that game was a part of many people's childhood, including mine!
I’m gonna do a separate video for that game
@@Flandrew I knew you would! ❤️
Here:

Ive been waiting for this comparison. Im all here for it
The portable one looks like it aged incredibly well. Especially the webslinging. That looks awesome as hell.
It was my first game for my GBA back in the day. I still remember every level vividly the game was definitely good.
Either that or I was 8 years old.
yes the web swinging in the gba game was excellent, but it was only a bonus level
HOW? How do you always pick the games so tightly connected to my childhood in these (well I’m very basic… maybe that’s it ). God you literally are one of the best on TH-cam
In the movie’s earlier script Normon was to die on the bridge but they changed it in the final version of the film
It's like you know exactly what videos I wanna see! You got yourself a loyal fan here 😁
I remember playing the game prior to this, Spider-Man (2000), that is a classic!
I literally just replayed through this whole game a couple days ago 😂 It absolutely brought back memories, especially the skull thugs lol
the oscorp part of the ps2 version unlocked a repressed memory. what a nightmare
This was supposed to be a new gen version of Neversoft’s Spidey
I was thinking “why don’t I remember Robopuppy considering I’ve seen Futurama over and over again?”. Because it’s from Jurassic Bark. That’s why. An episode I watched once and refused to ever watch again.
Flandrew - “… then you grew up playing Spider-Man the movie, the game.”
Me - “but which one?”
Flandrew - “the year was 2000.”
Me - “No no. Flandrew you missed the line!”
As someone who puts these videos on repeat as a happy background sound whilst I do stuff around the house, you’ve conditioned me to that line. 🤣 My brain struggled for a moment without it.
I've owned and enjoyed this game since early 2002, but it was today that I learned you can pick up cars in this game. lol
You forgot to mention the best part of the game: THE BOWLING ALLEY! Which also shows up as an enterable location in Spider-Man 2 (it's in Upper East Side)
