- In this video I talk the World Records Sales for Giant Size X-men 1 CGC 9.9 selling last night at comic connect. At first the number seemed low because the predictions were so high but when you really think about it...this seems like a crazy number to have been paid. I also talk about the Wolverine 1 CGC 10.0 that also set a record. What did you guys think about these sales and these numbers?

How did it get a 9.9 with staple wear? Easy. CGC needs people to forget about the scandal after scandal they've had so they start dropping grading standards and now everyone's talking about this. Everyone knows this, right? Don't let the obvious play distract you from the fact that we need tamper evident cases and a better structure at CGC that doesn't allow for their graders to steal/switch books... Like they likely have been for years before they got caught, hence why we've seen so many books go up for auction that clearly aren't the grade they were.
In fact, it's my suspicion that they're purposely muddying the waters with looser grading so it's harder to tell what's actually CGC being shitty at grading and what was the result of bad actors.

I own five copies Giant Size X-Men #1 purchased back when I was about seven years of age in 1976 for $1.00 each for 3 copies than found 2 copies in 1979 in my neighborhood candy store for $1.75 each. I still own them today in great shape range from 7.5-8.5

The price of GS 1 is probably based on the expectations that there will be other 9.9 that will be graded by CGC. If it was expected to be the only 9.9 EVER…it probably would have gone for more.

I rather buy the 6 9.8s as they will go back up over time and be a lot more easier to sell than a 170k comic
Good video. Very positive. The way I look at it...someone paid $170,000 for a bunch of folded paper with staples in it. That's a great number by me.

What the hell is the difference between a 9.8 and a 9.9? A micron of 'imperfection' based on the severity of the hangover of the grader? What a scam.
What a bad time to sell. But really I have no opinion. 9..9 and 10.0 collectors are in a class of their own. I certainly can't afford to buy this or any of them. If I had that kind of money I would rather invest in real estate, lol

In before we get CGC 10.5 grades next year
Always have to factor in opportunity cost. With a very conservative estimate of 5% growth for interest on cash… that CGC 10 should’ve sold for at least $33,000 to make it a worthy investment at the time (I know it’s not the same book that was sold @$19k…). The value of the book did not appreciate well if only considering as an investment. Either the value of the 10 didn’t appreciate well, or the book is currently undervalued
(Non of this includes taxes)
But for the fun factor… cool cover! And lucky to have in any collection!

There should be 50x more10.0 modern books than there are. If cgc was doing its job it would have been correctly grading books according to its own grading standards . I have hundreds of flawless books that should be 10.0s but would never get that grade , not because they are not flawless but bc cgc manufactures scarcity . Smh
This is such bs!! If these people just stop getting suckered into bidding on these ridiculous grades then CGC might want to dial it back and really give them there true grades. Cgc needs to stop controlling these markets. They make so much money off of creating hype. And yes, one day there will be cgc 20.0. This will never end. 3rd party graders control the collectible market and we’re paying for it!
Had this book been on heritage it would have done far better but because of the owner of this book and his ties to comic connect….this was a big number for it being auctioned there 🤷♂️ I’d wait about 2 years and put it on heritage and “if” no other “9.9” hits the census that book can easily pull 250-300k on the conservative side making it a great buy for that price imo.
When is a 10.0 gonna show up ?
No way is this book going to be the only grade we see. That buyer could have bought some mega first appearance grails… dumb
The only way Id have a 9.9/10 in my collection is if i got it through my own submissions. 9.8 is fine by me.
It’s a nice price considering how many potential 9.9’s may be out there.
That makes my reprints worth about ten grand.

It solely depends on how many 9.9s they want to have. It is worthless to me knowing how much massaging work and politics has gone into it to get that 9.9 It is definitely not in the original condition

Bless their heart someone bought a manufactured scarcity funny book for $170,000 while most working people are just concerned with being able to afford food, a place to live, and decent health care. Not to mention that politics seems more like a charlie foxtrot than effective leadership.
Just swells playing stupid rich people games.

I mean I guess it would be cool if the swells just spent their money on overpaying for things like funny books instead of bribing politicians and judges but I guess you can also use an overpriced funny book to bribe a politician or judge just as well as trips or bags of cash.
