Well, I caught myself smiling from the intro to the end. What fun and I could watch things like this all day. I did a similar thing with an 8-foot length of track separated in the middle with each 4-foot with opposite polarity and 4 cars in the middle and then came the tug of war. Of course, you had to shut it down before the looser touched the winner's track or you would get a not so lovely short but boy was it fun with friends bringing over their perceived campions. Rules were, :1 no traction tires or additives to the wheels :2 factory weights only :3 track cleaned before each contest :4 looser finish their drink. It was a lot of fun watching two equal locomotives match up, but we found we needed a designated driver, LOL. I miss those days. Great video, please do it again, Jersey Bill
I was on team Hawthorn Leslie, and the lovely little thing won! I love those engines. Possible 0-6-0 line up: Steam: Bachmann 64XX Hornby A1x Hornby J50 Bachmann Jinty Diesel: Hornby Sentinel(0-6-0 variant) Hornby Class 08 Bachmann Class 03 Bachmann Class 04
Great video Sam! I’ve always liked these sort of competition videos, pushing the models to their limits. Would love to see the Planet Industrials Kerr Stuart in an 0-6-0 video…
Great video, and a worthy victor! I’d definitely be interested to see how a Hornby 06 Shunter would fare against the Hawthorn Lesley, although I can ha ard a guess! Also be intrigued to see an 0-6-0 Battle of the Shunters, got to include an 08, 03 and another Sentinel in there.
Was this done before the Y7 came out? Although not sure if it would have done any better than the Y1/3. I would love to see the six wheel version as you have options, such as the Hunslet Austerities, Jinty, 16" hunslet, J70, 08s, 03s, the sentinels, Ruston 1& the B2 peckett.
Personally For the 0-6-0 Bachman Rosie Bachman Fowler 4F Hornby E2 … the newer SC&CR variant VS Hornby class 08 shunter Bachman class 08 shunter and Bachman arry and Bert … just one of them will do That’s it 😊 . Chose some good ones I recon . And ignore the face the whole diesel side is just class 08 shunters in different forms with one being from a kids tv program … they found as a diesel 0-6-0 As for Rosie … I heard you say in the review she is heavy . So that’s a good sign so I reckon she could do good . And I chose the E2 cuz … it’s cool and fairly new 2 years old . Not counting the brown or Thomas versions and the Fowler 4f cuz it’s my favourite small tender engine !
Steamwise I do feel the following are worthwhile: Triang nellie/polly/Connie The caley pug Bachmann percy (just throwing him in for fun mainly) Dapol b4 Dapol/hornby pug Dieselwise I reckon these would be good candidates: Triang dock shunter Triang diesel shunter Hornby class 06 Gaugemaster class 02 Hornby Dart (again one for fun) I don't think past this point you could continue the 0-4-0 tests with diesels in future as to my knowledge there aren't anymore in OO without resorting to kit building, the 0-6-0 angle would be interesting however as there's countless shunters with that wheel arrangement available out there
What a great experiment sam 😂 some lovely locos there, and the hawthorn Leslie has officially proved itself to me that it's the best small steam shunter! Great stuff as always sam :)
Since you used him, here’s a wee fun fact, the fat controller is called sir Topham hat here in the states as calling him fat was viewed as offensive, so the crew of the show used his sir title so kids won’t be mistaken as being mean when referring to the fat controller.
Definitely worth trying the R253/R353 shunters. After about 60 years of running them I think they might be the strongest/best built T-H model ever. Great video much appreciated.
Fun vid, Sam! I liked the sports-style commentary. I was rooting for the diesel Sentinel, which has a vaguely 'Continental' look, but, alas, I was disappointed...
If you can get your hands on a cheap Lima 00 diesel shunter, that would be great. They were sold by various companies since the 60s (Lima, Tyco and Hornby at some point among them) and were more often than not part of cheap christmas start sets. (There are in fact two versions of the loco, one of which has working lights and dual colors the other being a cheap single piece of plastic thing.) Think of them as the Mehano of their day. Most importantly: most of them are still in good working condition and they are still soid as of today (their latest incarnation comes from the Jouef starting set.) They have a somewhat weighty motor, which makes them perfect for pulling even a higher number of coaches.
this strength test for a battle of shunters is more evidence why the hawthorne leslie is one of the best recent models. i'd like to see leslie vs that pug, that dock shunter and a pocket rocket like miles
Yeah, would be nice to see the Triang dock shunter and Hornby pug and others you showed in the end there to take on the challenge next time, was just thinking when watching the video if maybe the Triang dock shunter could maybe win against the Dapol Hawthorn Lesley :)
For the 0-6-0 lineup, I’d say the Hatton’s P Class, the Bachmann Jinty, the Hornby J50, and the EFE Rail J94. As for the diesels, I’d say the Bachmann 08, the Heljan 07, the Oxford Rail Janus Shunter, and the Hornby 6 wheel Sentinal (if you have one, but if not then possibly the Bachmann 03 or 04)
Here’s a steam and diesel shunters for you Sam’s trains: 4 0-6-0 steam: 57xx, jinty, J50 and lastly the j90 4 0-6-0 diesels: 08 shunter, 04 class shunter, 07 shunter and lastly 03
Fantastic idea Sam Enjoyed the video Let’s see some of those old school tail chasers have a go Some very old tech against new tech 0-6-0 sounds a great idea too👍🏻
Shunting is more about low speed reliable running over complex pointwork, rather than just outright pulling power. For timetable running sessions the models that give the best shunting performance are diesels of the flexible Bo-Bo configuration with all wheels powered and picking up current. Even the Atlas Alco S2 models from about 1990 are stll hard to beat for every aspect of shunting. Even put Wrenn 8F 2-8-0s to shame when dealing with mainline running of heavy coal trains. That was when we had an anything goes night at Christmas time.
Some ideas for an 0-6-0 lineup: Steam - LB&SCR A1 Terrier - SR USA tank - LNER J70 - Hunslet Austerity Diesel - BR Class 08 (you have to, come on) - BR Class 04 - BRClass 07 - BR Class 14 If you want to get extra cheeky, you could swap one of the Steam shunters out for Thomas himself (even though he wouldn't stand a chance, especially the Bachmann version)
I would love to see an 0-6-0 version! Gotta include the Hatton's P Class! I'd also say the Hornby B2 Peckett, maybe the Victory Class (I forgot who made them) and I'd love to see the Hornby A1/A1X Terrier! For deisels, the Bachmann 03 Shunter, Heljin 07 Shunter, Bachmann or Hornby 08 Shunter and the Hornby 6 wheeled Sentinel shunter I think are gonn be the best choices.
Go on! As in the 1829 Rainhill Trials I hope we'll have now a plentiful of them at Gordon's Hill, confronting more wheel configurations or other features.
0-6-0 showdown would be awesome. And for a future N Gauge review I recommend the Gaugemaster Collection/KATO ES-1 Style Electric Locomotive. It is available from The Model Centre, Kernow Model Rail Centre, and Rails Of Sheffield.
This was a fun video! Did you make a review of the Bachmann Placer Crane, I don’t remember seeing one? For the 0-6-0s I’d like to see the Bachmann E1/J72, Dapol Terrier, Bachmann 94xx, Hornby Q1, and Hornby J50 for steam, and for diesel I’d like to see the Bachmann 08, Heljan 07, Heljan Ruston 165, Bachmann 03, and the Bachmann 04.
If there’s an 0-6-0 challenge, here would be a good line up Steam: Rapido hunslet, Rapido 15xx, any bachmann pannier, and hornby terrier. Diesel: sentinel 0-6-0, class 08 (hornby or bachmann), Heljan class 07, and bachmann class 03
Before i get more that 30 seconds in to this. I have just brought my first set, the Caledonian Belle. The plan is todo a shunting layout outside a small oval. I want to collect 0-4-0's and wagons so hopefully this is going to be interesting. Thank you sam. (edited) All good, i like how its not just about watching them go around in circles.
The fatt hatt hath been summoned multiple times this day, many amounts of confusion and delay (also heres a line up Steam - Hawthorne leslie, one of the port of par twins (if theyre out) Y7, ivor (if hes out), and and the Hornby railroad 0-4-0 Diesel - hornby railroad class 06, triang dock authority, hornby bagnall diesel (depending on steam roster), and the heljan railcar (dependong on steam roster))
As you're using the fat controler as the mark then you have to include Percy in the next episode! And if you do a 0-6-0 version please include the Bachmann USA Dock Tank, I really want to see how powerful it is in comparison to other members of it's wheel arrangement class.
This video was really fun! If all shunters/switchers were considered, I think American switchers would be difficult to beat due to their size. That being said though, they're not 0-4-0s and are much different in design, they wouldn't really be a counterpart.
Definitely more of the same! You could use a Hornby Bagnall in the next one. Also an 0-6-0 version. We need the Mighty Class 08 vs the Hornby Beatles 0-6-0 🤣🤣🤣
Hey Sam, Happy Thanksgiving from us Yanks from across the pond over in the States! Too bad you don't have Black Friday sales, lol lol lol. Peace, I really enjoy your channel, and when you review an engine, I REALLY appreciate you talking about the mechanism especially!
Hi Sam,, Enjoyed that one and Yes please for the 0-6-0. Tank or Tender loco..?. I'm assuming tank, so please please include Triang Jinty 47606..got to be heaviest 0-6-0 out there. Also peckett B2, and maybe Hornby Austerity.. Bachmann 0-6-0 are a bit weedy.. Think they will all struggle against the class 08 gronk from any maker with their low gearing... 🤷👍
Although it would take a long time , I would do this test different , with multiple runs for same locos by adding one more coach at every run , until there would be only one left able to climb fully the hill. I'm surprised how well you crane did , I'm not sure if I have a different model , but mine's struggling to tow the Dapol Track Cleaner on a flat surface , or to pull a platform and two cranes , I was sure that in your test it will be a DNF like the Ruston. 🤣 I would like to see more competitions like this.😅
An ancient 040 loco from the early seventies with number 6042 would eat them all! As kids, those things were scalextric fast and could pull most of our rolling stock. Still have one somewhere
The 0-6-0's would offer more options I would have thought , heats involving each of the big 4 companies, Industrials and Diesels with the winners meeting in a final ?
got a idea for Battle Of The Shunters all wheell configuration shunters compiting video not full but a part video part 1 part 2 to name a few like salvage our scrap & don.t forget mavis vs real life engine request from someone 6 years ago don,t horry take your time
I have here the line up for the round two the 0-6-0st & shunters, LBSC E2 is Reprisenting the Sourhern Railway, The J50 the LNER, The pannier 57xx the GWR and the Jinty of The LMS
0-6-0s would be good, opens up some sneaky tender contenders too… What about that terrible Beatles Loco that has to have a redeeming feature maybe it’s a decent shunter?
How about the shunters of sodor. Thomas, Percy, Rosie and duck or Oliver Vs devious diesel, Paxton, daisy and one other Sodor diesel. Maybe even use any of the Bachmann steamies Vs Bachmann diesels and then Bachmann Vs Hornby. For daisy in Hornby use a single class 101 DMU car( the powered one out of the 2/3 car set. Or possibly the Bachmann Thomas range of small shunters take on the top 2 from this steam and Diesel heats
48 HP Ruston shunter: *stops dead*
The Fat Controller: *approaches menacingly*
hahaha!!
The Fat Controller: I'm sending you to the shadow realm!
Sir Handel: NOOOO!!! *Fades from existence*
The Fat Controller: Much better!
STH "You've activated my trap points"
Well, I caught myself smiling from the intro to the end. What fun and I could watch things like this all day. I did a similar thing with an 8-foot length of track separated in the middle with each 4-foot with opposite polarity and 4 cars in the middle and then came the tug of war. This is really fun and relaxing. Definitely would love to see more of this with different trains and challenges!
3:51 - You have caused confusion and delay!
hahaha!
Can't wait for the battle of the 0-6-0s
For the steamies, it can contain the LB&SC E2, SR Q1, and more. For Diesels, maybe those like the BR Class 08
I think this was a tank engine challenge rather than tender engine but ok
those three locomotives have nothing in common
I was on team Hawthorn Leslie, and the lovely little thing won! I love those engines.
Possible 0-6-0 line up:
Steam:
Bachmann 64XX
Hornby A1x
Hornby J50
Bachmann Jinty
Diesel:
Hornby Sentinel(0-6-0 variant)
Hornby Class 08
Bachmann Class 03
Bachmann Class 04
What about the Hattons P Class? 🥺
What about rapido j70?
That's the 0-4-0 test done. Now we need an 0-6-0 test, which MUST include the almighty Class 08!
Could have a round of just class08
@@kevinpoulton Could have a preliminary round of 08s to see which one goes through to the diesel round
Class 08 Shunter Vs. a 57XX pannier tank...it'll be like Mike Tyson Vs. Jake Paul 😂
Great video Sam! I’ve always liked these sort of competition videos, pushing the models to their limits. Would love to see the Planet Industrials Kerr Stuart in an 0-6-0 video…
Great video Sam! This just reminds me of the Steam-Diesel rivalry in Thomas and Friends honestly.
haha yeah it is a bit like that!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I still remember IC82s little battle of the shunters series that he did years ago.
nostalgia
I got reminded of that too upon seeing this video
@@IC-qf7evsame
He was my childhood. This video reminded me of him
Was this done before the Y7 came out? Although not sure if it would have done any better than the Y1/3.
I would love to see the six wheel version as you have options, such as the Hunslet Austerities, Jinty, 16" hunslet, J70, 08s, 03s, the sentinels, Ruston 1& the B2 peckett.
Excellent video Sam really enjoyed it. Lots of fun.
Personally
For the 0-6-0
Bachman Rosie
Bachman Fowler 4F
Hornby E2 … the newer SC&CR variant
VS
Hornby class 08 shunter
Bachman class 08 shunter
and Bachman arry and Bert … just one of them will do
That’s it 😊 . Chose some good ones I recon . And ignore the face the whole diesel side is just class 08 shunters in different forms with one being from a kids tv program … they found as a diesel 0-6-0

Love the Shunter challenge!
Great video as always sam
Steamwise I do feel the following are worthwhile:
Triang nellie/polly/Connie
The caley pug
Bachmann percy (just throwing him in for fun mainly)
Dapol b4
Dapol/hornby pug
Dieselwise I reckon these would be good candidates:
Triang dock shunter
Triang diesel shunter
Hornby class 06
Gaugemaster class 02
Hornby Dart (again one for fun)
I don't think past this point you could continue the 0-4-0 tests with diesels in future as to my knowledge there aren't anymore in OO without resorting to kit building, the 0-6-0 angle would be interesting however as there's countless shunters with that wheel arrangement available out there

haha yeah I have heard that - just can't not call him the Fat Controller as I've always known him as such!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I think it's probably pretty offensive to call someone fat anywhere, but we Brits seem to enjoy insulting each other. Apparently it's called banter...
@ I think you brits just know how to have a laugh better than we Americans most of the time. Lol 😝
Sooner or later they'll force us to refer to him in Newspeak as the "unslim controller" 😉
Well done Dapol Hawthorn Leslie, quite a powerful 0-4-0 which makes a great shunter perfect for your railway.
Love that you're doing this! I remember when IC-82 originally did a battle of the shunters! Good memories.
Yes please to the 0-6-0. Also surely you need to test against the mighty pocket rocket!
Definitely worth trying the R253/R353 shunters. After about 60 years of running them I think they might be the strongest/best built T-H model ever. Great video much appreciated.
Great fun video. Congratulations to Dapol with their Hawthorn Leslie. I would love to see the 060 and more. God bless
It would be cool to see some 08 shunters going agains each other. Nice work Sam!
God I remember watching his Thomas Character vs IRL basis from ancient times, nostalgia hits like a 53,000 ton ocean liner grazing an iceberg in 1912
Fun vid, Sam! I liked the sports-style commentary. I was rooting for the diesel Sentinel, which has a vaguely 'Continental' look, but, alas, I was disappointed...
Brilliant video Sam! Love the 0-4-0’s!

Good fun! Yes I hope that you do more in this series.
Some ideas for an 0-6-0 lineup:

- SR USA tank
- LNER J70

I bet on the yellow one with the crane. (11:06) Well, so much for that idea. May the best loco win.
Go on! As in the 1829 Rainhill Trials I hope we'll have now a plentiful of them at Gordon's Hill, confronting more wheel configurations or other features.
Fun video. I used to use a gradient and see how much my locos could pull wagons with coins in up. The hobby should be fun like this.
this video had no right to be so gripping and entertaining!😆!
0-6-0 showdown would be awesome. And for a future N Gauge review I recommend the Gaugemaster Collection/KATO ES-1 Style Electric Locomotive. It is available from The Model Centre, Kernow Model Rail Centre, and Rails Of Sheffield.
Great video. 👍 If you do this again, it would be funny to see Percy included, either Hornby, Bachmann or both.
I love this challenge type of content please do more
Blimey I remember when IC82 did something similar back in the day, what a rush of nostalgia
This was a fun video! Did you make a review of the Bachmann Placer Crane, I don’t remember seeing one? Very interesting and fun to watch.
Any 0-6-0 competition should absolutely include the Class 08
Best
If there’s an 0-6-0 challenge, here would be a good line up
Steam: Rapido hunslet, Rapido 15xx, any bachmann pannier, and hornby terrier.
That's so exciting - all the best with your first set - hope you have a lot of fun!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@5:06 Somehow British steam engines always look so good in their works grey livery.
Hey I've got the Express Dairy Ruston 48 Diesel Shunter!!! Also @ 2:20 you said 7 Coaches but then @ 3:28 you said 6??? Looks Fun 🙂🚂🚂🚂
The fatt hatt hath been summoned multiple times this day, many amounts of confusion and delay (also heres a line up
Steam - Hawthorne leslie, one of the port of par twins (if theyre out) Y7, ivor (if hes out), and and the Hornby railroad 0-4-0
Diesel - hornby railroad class 06, triang dock authority, hornby bagnall diesel (depending on steam roster), and the heljan railcar (dependong on steam roster))
As you're using the fat controler as the mark then you have to include Percy in the next episode! And if you do a 0-6-0 version please include the Bachmann USA Dock Tank, I really want to see how powerful it is in comparison to other members of it's wheel arrangement class.
those poor little shunters, is this cruelty to locos - Sam only your conscience can tell you, but a lot of fun!!!
This is giving me IC82 vibes, great memories!
An amazing competition...more please!
Interesting video Sam, I'm really surprised that the Dapol 0-4-0 won.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
These shunting locomotives can be useful for pushing carriages or slow freight trains for big engines, I know that for history fact.
Sam these are all awesome videos but we haven’t seen an 00 review in like a month but this video is sick as hell
If only one of those engines had traction tyres - I know you love them!
I can't wait to see your video on what I sent you in that package. Also, I'm going to a train show this weekend; Happy Thanksgiving
Great vid Sam, did keep an eye out for you today at the NEC (Sunday 24th) but didnt see you!
Hey Sam, Happy Thanksgiving from us Yanks from across the pond over in the States! Too bad you don't have Black Friday sales, lol lol lol. Peace, I really enjoy your channel, and when you review an engine, I REALLY appreciate you talking about the mechanism especially!
i guessed it right.. the hawthorne. My channel has a review of the same with youchoos sound and stay alive. It is a marvel. Cheers Sam! A big fan
Reminds T&F Steamies vs Diesels
I can't believe the Fat Controller would allow such a contest, that clearly causes...Confusion and Delay.
id love to see the dock shunter compete as well is other triang locos
J50
94xx
Jinty
08
07
Sentinel 0-6-0
04
If we do get another battle of the 0-4-0 shunters, I nominate the Hornby Percy!
An ancient 040 loco from the early seventies with number 6042 would eat them all! As kids, those things were scalextric fast and could pull most of our rolling stock. Still have one somewhere

quite excited for this video its a realyl cool concept!
This reminded me of the IC82 version I watched years ago as a kid!
I've got full size locomotives that would struggle to get up that quiet shallow hill
Oh cool concept, perhaps it would be even crazier to do with mainline locomotives, although maybe not with the Vitrains 37 and accurascale deltic etc
And with prototypical trains
I have here the line up for the round two the 0-6-0st & shunters, LBSC E2 is Reprisenting the Sourhern Railway, The J50 the LNER, The pannier 57xx the GWR and the Jinty of The LMS
Ooh excellent - that's actually quite hard to call!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
There's also more wheel arrangements for steam switchers (shunters) than just 0-4-0
I think a test of Type 1 diesels would be interesting… then type 2 etc
That was fun entertainment. Thanks, Sam.
Great video, Sam 👍.
Why do I get the feeling this was just a chance to gush over the Hawthorne Leslie again?
Great video. How about an 0-6-0 challenge?
Fun episode. How about the Bachmann 03 diesel next time?
You should try doing the Dapol B4 up against the hawthorn leslie Sam. That might be interesting ;)
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Great idea, steam rules for me, now do the same with larger diesels and steam?
Moral of the video? Buy the Dapol Hawthorne Leslie. Brilliant little engine.
0-6-0s would be good, opens up some sneaky tender contenders too…
What about that terrible Beatles Loco that has to have a redeeming feature maybe it’s a decent shunter?
How about the shunters of sodor. Thomas, Percy, Rosie and duck or Oliver Vs devious diesel, Paxton, daisy and one other Sodor diesel. Maybe even use any of the Bachmann steamies Vs Bachmann diesels and then Bachmann Vs Hornby. For daisy in Hornby use a single class 101 DMU car( the powered one out of the 2/3 car set. Or possibly the Bachmann Thomas range of small shunters take on the top 2 from this steam and Diesel heats
Shock! No classic Triang/Hornby Dock Shunter, that would have taken on the Hawthorne-Leslie. Are there any of these still alive after all these years?
