I love how if you go on the internet and ask about painting an RV, all you get is a bunch of people howling how it's impossibly expensive and how your only option is 'LEAVE IT TO THE PROS BUT YOU'RE GONNA PAY TEN THOUSAND OR MORE!" yet here we see a guy who just used his brain and had a great outcome. This is why I prefer TH-cam to forums. TH-cam is full of people who do, forums are full of people who theorize and love to hear themselves talk even if they don't have a fucking clue what they're talking about. Nice job. I did the same thing, after being told that it was impossible without it looking like shit... and they were all wrong. It came out fine.
aglands way to go and I agree with what you stated because it would cost me $9,000 to paint my 5th wheel do you tube helped me as well and I did it myself. thanks for watching.
Max1Chase1, I am going to paint my rv. I was inspired by you. You stated the rollers you used but I need to know what Rust-Oleum pain you used meaning semi gloss or high gloss and if you mixed this pain with anything or straight from the can.
Candided, No our RV has Aluminum skin but this process will work on fiberglass as well, and You are right on the mixture. Tinder I have confidence in your ability to do this yourself, just do small sections at a time until you go completely over the entire RV. Again Thanks everyone for watching and doing your own thing with this, I look forward to seeing everyone's results.
Thank you for sharing, you did an excellent job.. So good to see someone take pride in what they have and work so hard to keep it looking good! Hats off to you!
+JJGriswold Thanks for the comment, And the Older RVs during these years had the best furniture and materials and with my HR 5th wheel being made of all Aluimumn makes it a keeper, see my other channel of Max1Chase1 with 7 new videos where I repainted it again with a full Body Paintjob. Again Thanks for watching.
I am painting my RV this week also with Rustoleum paint. I have done a vintage trailer already using this paint....turned out soooo amazing.....and much cheaper than paying a shop to do it. AND, just the personal satisfaction of seeing the finished product...priceless. Great little video. Great job! XO
Believe me I saw this on You tube just as you are now and I thought that there is no way I can do this and on my RV at that, but I got up the courage and did a couple of test painting on and old car and also that allowed me to get the mixture just right, so go ahead and take the challenge and you will amaxe yourself how easy it is and the results.
Thanks for watchingt, and you could use a sealant but the paint already has enamel mixed in the paint which gives it that glossy shine, Go to Lowes and see the pint can of Rustoleum and select your color also use 100% mineral spirits. The spray can is good for small areas but the spray is not good for large areas, so roll it. good luck and take your time.
so now that a year or two has passed, did the paint start to chip or flake off the camper. Almost as if it didn't bite to the original paint? I'm considering painting mine, I have alum panel exterior. Id probably tape off and shoot with gun after i sand and prep.
+Bayoucane Since 2012, I never had any issues of fading or cracking, Rustoleum must use some good enamel in their paint or something, but I have just repainted my 5th wheel with a full body paint job, I did not go into details but I used the same process and believe me Doing black takes some patience, See it on my other channel of Max1Chase1 channel with 7 videos about stopping at truckstops, it too came out great, TH-cam is trying to straighten out the problem why my videos went to 2 separate Max1Chase1 channels, Again thanks for watching and I wish you good results and remember do a test first to get the mix the way you want it before you do the big job. Send us a video of your finished product.
Thanks for watching Kelly, Until you get the hang of the mixture find the same material as your RV to practice on and change your mix as it fits you, inner the better. wish you much sucess and mostly take your time and the results will be great. And for different days use a new fresh roller.
I'm wanting to do my pop up it has some stained spots and the roof has some aluminum showing thur will this stuff work on a popup and what are your mixing ratios
Sorry for the delay, But first sand the area and get a can of rustoleum spray primer and then paint the area, The mix ratio is 1 part paint, 3 parts mineral spirits, Good luck on your project.
Not familiar with using Sherman Williams paint only Rustoleum and its paint to thinning ratio. but before you paint over the old paint use a 500 Grit to rough up the surface some and wash are thoroughly and if metal is exposed use some rustoleum primer to prep the area for the paint to stick to. Good Luck and thanks for watching
Looking great how did it turn out after. Tell me, should you use a sealant? And can you wash and polish on top of this type of pain? What type of paint? I know it says it in the title and Duh... On my half. But can you get this type of pain in spray can or is the pain and roller Better. Thanks and look forward to hearing from ya.
On this application I used 2 Quart Cans, and 1 Pint of 100% mineral spirits while using the foam roller method for 1 coat, the HVLP gun may use less. thanks for watching.
I just bought a small 17' ultra lite hybrid all fiberglass travel trailer, can i use this same method on this? do i have to sand it down first? when i bought it the previous owner had already painted it a gray color, but it was just rolled on and not good at all. I want painted it back white.
which ever form of measurement you use it will be divided into 4 parts, 1 part paint, 3 parts mineral spirits, try a quart can first and practice on a small area first to make sure your mixture is how you want it, good luck on your project.
+Jorge Lopez Still the Rustoleum gloss paint in the can, 100% mineral spirits, 4" and 3" foam rollers and mix your paint very well with a stick to prevent bubbles in the paint. some use a hair dryer to eliminate air bubbles but see what works best for you and good luck, try on a similar material piece to practice first and thx for watching.
Hi Max, great job on the painting. So just so I understand correctly, you used 1/4 paint and 3/4 mineral spirits mixed together and then painted your rv. Does this mix work the same for your fiberglass door? I ask because my entire rv is fiberglass. Also, did you do anything to prep the rv before painting? Washing, degreasing? Thank you
Mr Deman76, Yes the same mix works well for fiberglass, see my other video where I showed my entrance door partially done and the after he skin on my 5th wheel is aluminum and the only prepping I did was a degreaser with Simple green and do a good rinse and a rinse wash with an auto brush and allow to dry all day. Do a small are to get the mix you like for your needs, but I have found that fiberglass fibers soak up paint and more than 1 coat will be needed. Take your time and wish you luck, you can do it.
MrDeman76 Just the regular Rustoleum in the quart can, make sure it is gloss enamel, I like to get my paint from Lowes, oh yeah use 100% mineral spirits and take your time, good luck.
It still looked great even without waxing, Update, I have now painted it again but this time I used a Air Gun See my other channel of Max1Chase1, and Thanks for watching.
Craig it is just Rustoleum in the quart can from any Lowes Home Dept store, For the Mineral Spirits use 100% mineral spirits and remember the thinner the better, 1/4 paint 3/4 thinner also depending on your material, practice first on same material and then go do your thing , wish you luck and take your time. Thx for watching.
It is still holding up very well as the day I finished it with only 1 coat, the black streak don't stick anymore I guess because of the enamel already in the paint, I will do a followup video to show it current status, and now since it's getting cooler here in Va, and the nats are gone maybe now I can get to that other coat, Thanks again for watching and any ideas or comments which can help us all.
Aglands, good for you and your determination to do your own thing and the way you wanted and is satisfied.I too got the idea from You Tube and I am satisfied as well :).

Nice job - it looks great!! Love your videos from the road too. Brings back memories from our RV'ing days...
Thanks for watching.

I will send you pictures as I do the work so you can see how it is coming along..
its looking great. I have a couple of doors that are yellow too,Ill have to try that on mine. Love the videos, keep em coming.
Thanks for watching.

thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to pass this video to all my RV going friends!
Beautiful work.
Thank You it saved me a lot of money
Did you use 1/4 inch mohair roller
so now that a year or two has passed, did the paint start to chip or flake off the camper. Almost as if it didn't bite to the original paint? I'm considering painting mine, I have alum panel exterior. Id probably tape off and shoot with gun after i sand and prep.

Hi Did you sand between coat?
What did you roll it on with
I'm wanting to do my pop up it has some stained spots and the roof has some aluminum showing thur will this stuff work on a popup and what are your mixing ratios
Sorry for the delay, But first sand the area and get a can of rustoleum spray primer and then paint the area, The mix ratio is 1 part paint, 3 parts mineral spirits, Good luck on your project.

Awesome! I was just walking around my 89' SuperChief and thinking how am I going to paint this beast. I have found my answer. Thank you.
Looks good. Nice to know it's possible to do this. So how is the paint job holding up after a year? Maybe you should do a follow up video.
How much rustoleum did you use. 1 can 2 cans? 1 quart? 1 gallon? 1 coat 2 coats?
On this application I used 2 Quart Cans, and 1 Pint of 100% mineral spirits while using the foam roller method for 1 coat, the HVLP gun may use less. thanks for watching.
Max1Chase1 Do you mean you used 2... 1 quart cans? I have only seen 1 quart and 1 gallon rustoleum cans.
Sorry 2 cans of the 1quart cans., my 5th wheel RV is 37 ft long and 10 ft high of paintable surface.
I just bought a small 17' ultra lite hybrid all fiberglass travel trailer, can i use this same method on this? do i have to sand it down first? when i bought it the previous owner had already painted it a gray color, but it was just rolled on and not good at all. I want painted it back white.

nice,,so i got a 96 signature series fiberglass what do i need to paint it?
+Jorge Lopez Still the Rustoleum gloss paint in the can, 100% mineral spirits, 4" and 3" foam rollers and mix your paint very well with a stick to prevent bubbles in the paint. some use a hair dryer to eliminate air bubbles but see what works best for you and good luck, try on a similar material piece to practice first and thx for watching.
The question is will rustolium paint turn chalky after a while, there's a reason car paint costs so much.
Thank you

Thank you sir, much appreciated!
Max1Chase1 one more question; what rustoleum did you use? I saw one for Marine/fiberglass or one with enamel. Thank you
MrDeman76
Just the regular Rustoleum in the quart can, make sure it is gloss enamel, I like to get my paint from Lowes, oh yeah use 100% mineral spirits and take your time, good luck.
so that's just regular rustoleum...mixed at 1/4 paint and 3/4 mineral spirits?...it looks great
how is your rv looking now?
It still looked great even without waxing, Update, I have now painted it again but this time I used a Air Gun See my other channel of Max1Chase1, and Thanks for watching.
Great job. I think I will try it on my Toyota. Exactly what type of Rustoleum paint did you use?
Craig it is just Rustoleum in the quart can from any Lowes Home Dept store, For the Mineral Spirits use 100% mineral spirits and remember the thinner the better, 1/4 paint 3/4 thinner also depending on your material, practice first on same material and then go do your thing , wish you luck and take your time. Yes! I did my bmw with the same but I wet sanded first.
Max1Chase1 this info would be awesome in the description area. I like the paint job
Is taht a fiberglass rv?
It is aluminum, but the door is fiberglass.
