  • I found some archive footage from GM that discuss the story of the 1996 LT4, and ALL the differences between it and the LT1.
    It was truly the high point of the SBC, and you can see why as the engineers who made it happen break down the differences.
    Enjoy, and subscribe!

    I have a CE lt4 with 65k man I love that car . So much character and it's not just a c4 ,it's the c4 in its final and best form- feeling the road and every bump . It's visceral and addictive . Love the vids been watching since the polo green lol

      You're like my longest running vette fan!! Thank you!! And I agree, the car was waaaaaaaaaaay ahead of its time, and had really become something serious by the end of the run!

    Always loved the LT4 equipped 96 C4s. They make serious power and the non-Collector & GS versions are about as close to a sleeper as one gets with a Corvette!

      I had a few collectors editions, and one other base LT4. I like both, but I agree. Most people assume this is a LT1 automatic car, because 80% of them seem to be!

    They forgot the plasma base plate attached to the exhaust pump. This will allow the engine to switch hyperdrive modes without additional parasitic drag. This is HUGE - and they didn’t even mention it!

    Nice! Besides the extra horsepower, the gearbox was carefully balanced to optimize the engine’s higher power band. I prefer naturally aspirated engines for their natural feel and less complicated maintenance. Subscribed.

    • @mattquerio
      @mattquerio  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's funny you say that about the naturally aspirated engines. As a kid in the 80s and 90s, all I wanted was a turbo car. After having so many of the modern turbo cars, and a few old ones... I've realized the linear power of the NA engine is soooo satisfying. I agree to a T.

    Good find!…there’s a lot of old-90’s-GM factory videos out there. In fact, one that came out in 1990 inspired and gave me the courage to do what had to be done to move a lot full of snow covered Oldsmobiles in 1993.

      @@mattquerio I did. Straight out of high school in ‘89. Winter ‘92/‘93 we got dumped with snow and bitter cold. The cars were absolutely buried. And we, the salespeople had to key up and move all of them. We’d all done it before…we knew the drill. But this time the cars were barely lumps in snow drifts. The first car-we started in a line of Cieras-took us 20 minutes to move 15 feet forward. Then I remembered something. I saw an ad. A GM ad that showed the powertrains taking a BEATING…in extreme temps nonetheless. No mercy reversey…I decided to try it. Words cannot describe the look on the other sales peoples faces when I cold started a Ciera, dropped it in D, and FLOORED it..speedo shot up to 70-90mph..the car strained forward, then without taking my foot off the gas pedal, shifted in to R..it jerked back hard..then, back in to D…it immediately squirreled its way out of its spot.
      I hopped out and they looked like I had backed over a small child…then I did it again. Then, they all got in cars and every single Oldsmobile showed its stuff that day. The only casualty was an Achieva that got high ended on a snow mound..I should have know better but I kept at it till something broke. It had zero contact with the ground. Warranty. None of those cars ever had a problem.
      I remembered the ad and thought, if they’re actually showing them doing that to their cars…they MUST be able to easily take it.
      It was amazing.
      Here’s the ad…I found it.

    LT4 engines are about 40 more hp then they say making that engine 370hp and the manual trans was geared higher so got you .3 making about 100hp differance in feel and 1/4 mile times. Ppl were reporting 13.0- 13.6 depending on the driver 1/4 mile Stock and with some mild simple mods like slicks .3 and cat back exhaust .4 and K&N air cleaner .2 ppl were running 12.4-12.8 best -worst times. LT1 13.8-14.4 1/4 stock to run like an LT4 you can do the cam 22hp .25 tenths in 1/4 mile, roller rockers and valve springs 18hp .18 , intake air foil and K&N filter 15hp .15 cat back exhaust 42hp .42 and a mild tune to run the best 12.8 auto if manual faster more like 12.6 add slicks and 12.3 - 12.6. so without slicks your there at that 100hp gain to make up for the auto to manual trans and run the same times.

      @msh6865 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Roller rockers and valve springs won't get you 18 ho. And the airfoil is essentially useless. Maybe 1-2 hp at most. Air filter 'might' be worth 5-10 hp at best.
      Long tube headers and high flow catalytic converters will gain the most hp and torque.

    • @mattquerio
      @mattquerio  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @djweszone Yeah there are a lot of tricks to wake up a LT. I really don't know the numbers per mod, but they add up!

    I heard that the LT4 roller rockers are so rare and can't be seen by anyone except a GM certified ZR1 technician. When anyone else has tried to open up the top end of the engine the rocker arms disappear into a cloud and leave behind the standard LT1 rocker arms. That person is left to live a life of shame.....

      @@mattquerio LOL....I can't either. I know I worked on more ZR1's than LT4's though. We're almost as rare as the rocker arms. I left GM in '02 for more blue pastures, but there hasn't been a year since that I'm not diagnosing an Opti-spark failure. Thank GAWD for MSD and their unit.
      Life with the SVT franchise dealerships kept me busy, but it was the 6 liter diesel that paid for my home. I love this industry and the owners that have made it possible.

      Petris is the only way to go, his MSD was actually made in China.

      @@arturozarate1752 MSD optispark distributors were very hit and miss, and not nearly as reliable as the OEM unit.
      The first run or two of MSDs were fine, the rest after that used a cheaper optical sensor and that is what fails.
      The OEMs used a Mitsubishi sensor, and those do not tend to fail at all, they were used in a fair few other cars in Japan. A simple clean up and new cap and rotor and the OEM unit will easily last 20+ years.
