Can a C4 Corvette Stand Up to Daily Duty?
I see this question asked a lot. Can you use a C4 Corvette as your only car? These are the things you need to consider to answer that question!

I can't find a car that I like more than a C4... and I'M TRYING!

I've owned well over 100 cars, 6 of them have been C4s, so many others...Foxes...2nd, 3rd, and 6th gen Camaros, SN95 Mach, a Marauder, MG's, Triumph's, I had a LeBaron, Town Cars, a Miata, a few X308 Jags... I simply cannot find a car I enjoy more than a C4 Vette. I'm trying. I'm open to suggestions.

I wouldn't daily any corvette they are my nice cars for nice days..the c4 is cheap enough but i wouldn't daily it
I agree in the sense that it would kill the fun, but it's comfortable enough to do it. Definitely going to want a well sorted example. But I agree.
@mattquerio at least your nor mad at me now..jeesh life is short have fun
I had a c4 and my c5 is way better than the c4 all day long power looks technology etc.. haaaaaa
Subjective, stock for stock a C5 only has 15hp on a LT4. But that's a sweet story and you should definitely tell it at parties 🥳 I took a peek at your channel. Bring that C5 automatic convertible over if you want to see tail lights 🤷♂️
@mattquerio ha lt4 is an option so no comparison but nice story
Hey Matt, thanks for the video! I will do the fluid change soon on my recently bought 93 C4 as I totally agree with you about doing all the maintenance asap that can easily be done by yourself. I already ordered 3 liters (I'm overseas) of Amsoil synchromesh, but I am curious if you really need the 3 bottles. How much fluid did you manage to get in there? Kind regards from germany, where it gets more and more difficult (politically) to keep those cars alive. Julian
Thanks for watching! I'm glad it helped. I was able to do about 2.2 to 2.4 liters, that was it. So yes 3 bottles, but you won't need it all. That's awesome that you have a C4 over there, it must turn heads!
Looks great!
Thank you man!!
1994 C4 110k miles auto. Drive it daily in the Dallas Tx area. Great fun. Everything works AC etc. Dialed in and drives like a go Kart. Torch Red triple interior. Had it since 2015. Good luck with yours. The other thing is everyone knows me by my car since no one is daily driving their C4s. Basically you only see others on the weekends or car shoes. Great video. I enjoyed it.
If you don't mind sharing, when/what did you pay for yours? The value of these is quickly rising 🙌
I bought this car in March 30th of this year for $15,000. It had brand new rear tires, and 10 year old front tires. I bought front tires to match the rear tires. The front is lowered on a VBP lowering spring, so I lowered the rear to match with vansteel bolts. As of today it is at the local chevy dealer getting 4 new Bilstein B8 shocks, front inner and outer tie rods, upper and lower ball joints, rear outer tie rods, both rear wheel bearing/hub assemblies, and finally a 4 wheel alignment. After all that I will have a tick over 20k into the car. I'm a bit deep into it, and I don't think I can get that back out, but it's a really clean no option 63k mile car. The plan is to keep enjoying it. I actually sold my scat pack challenger to move back into a C4, there's a video on my channel highlighting that. Feel free to subscribe for more LT4 stuff to come!
Thanks for the video 😊 I love my 96 LT4 Collector Series! Just like you, this era Vette was the one of my late teens (you forgot to mention Nirvana, btw 😆) and I'm still infatuated. All the best!
Haha, of course, Nirvana too! Yeah, the LT4 is still pretty slept on. A lot of people don't know. There's a video on my channel with gm video footage about the LT4 and lists every single thing they did to make it create it's power, and how they built it to take abuse.
What a lovely dashboard, everything you need to know right in front of you.
I agree. I like all the C4 dashes. Very straight forward. Some cars today are overwhelming.
T5 transmission?
A T5 is a Borg Warner/Tremec unit for rwd applications. This transmission was referred to as the MTX IV. It is the same as the trans used in a 1989-1995 Ford Taurus SHO.
Why are you using my photo of Ken Lingenfelter driving his 415 CID LT-5 LPE tuned C4 in the thumbnail?
I typically use a photo of my own car, but I wanted a driving/rolling shot. I googled "C4 Corvette" and did an image search, and this was one was my favorite.
To expand on that, my channel is predominantly based on keeping C4 Corvettes relevant. If you'd like me to change the thumbnail, I will. It's a beautiful shot of a beautiful car.
You probably have a skip-shift eliminator installed on your 6-speed ZF gearbox. The light will still come on, but the skip-shift solenoid won't activate anymore. Love your LT4, enjoy that car!!
Oh ok, I didn't know the light would still illuminate with the eliminator installed! Thank you for the insight, and thank you for watching!
Love driving my ‘91 six speed. Very comfortable and fun car to drive and the seats are amazing.
The 91 seats look ultra supple in the cars I've seen. I prefer the early seats, or in 94+ the base seats. I never found the 94-96 sport seats to be as comfortable, nor do I like the style. Well, with the exception of red sport seats in a 96 collectors edition or a grand sport, those get a pass.
nice
Thank you!
Thank you for taking the effort of filming the transmission oil change of your C4 corvette. I could sense the difficulty of filming in such a low and restrictive area ! 👍
I'm glad you found it useful, thank you for watching!
I got a 1996 last November and I wanted a stick - but like you implied, that was hard to find. I found a very nice automatic, went for it, and I love it - no regrets. I don't track my car but I have had manuals in the past and enjoyed them. If I'd had a choice between two identical cars, one manual, one auto, I would have gotten the manual but that was not my choice and I'm happy with what I got. Your mileage may vary. I got the car for pretty Sunday drives but it has become my daily. It is a fun car. I have a modern car for inclement weather driving.
Nothing wrong with an automatic car. 2 of my 6 C4s have been automatic, but only because I could not find a manual. I swear it's 10 to 1 auto vs manuals built. All of them make a great weekend car.
Yea man you have to shift quicker!!! My trans am runs better than that!
I chose to not wail on it. What kind of trans am do you have?
Transams are ugly and have a terrible chassis. Lol. It's a high-school kids car. Grow up and get a vette.
what kind if camera did you buy?
Gopro hero 12. So far it's great.
Nice Vette. I have a red 92
Thank you for watching, and hold onto that 92!
@mattquerio Thanks, man. I love my car. Your car is incredible! Beautiful. Very impressive. I'm just starting to restore my car. New bushings, decent brakes. Just got new tires and a rebuilt steering column. Lots of little things. Then I'll strip the 2 layers of paint, change the carpet, add sport seats, T56 magnum, Gen V LT1 with cam, new paint, wrap the entire interior in leather, stereo, 6 pistol WILLWOOD brakes.... TMTL. 1 or 2 things at a time....These cars deserve to be saved.
Sounds sick! Thinking about getting mine soon 🔥🔥
As long as you want it to sound hairy! Lol. I love it.
I would totally daily a C4, but i havent had an "only car" since i was 16... i refer to my XJ Civic and Grand Prix all as daily drivers because i drive them all multiple times a week
I hear that. I've very rarely had one car, but I could daily a C4 as a sole car if needed. I probably wouldn't choose it, I'd go more practical because I am old, but even so... it could be done!
Only daily a ride you can afford to fix and or replace. Have a reliable daily and a sweet sports car for the weekend and or date nights.
I get that, but these are cheap to fix and replace. Really these are cheaper than most peoples commuter cars.
I’ve been in the market for a C4 (also C5) corvette as my next car, so this was a great and educational video! I currently daily drive a 2004 Mazda RX-8 6 - speed. Anyone who knows anything about that car knows how poor the reliability and fuel economy can be, but I’ve had a good amount of luck with mine, currently sitting at just over 193k miles on the clock, fuel economy not so much as I average ~ 10 mpg…. Vettes in comparison seem like the regular Camrys and corollas to me ha ha!
I am glad you liked it! And yeah I've always heard rotary engines butt chug fuel, and have their quirks. Once you have lived rotary life, this will be a breeze lol.
I veiw a Corvette as a toy. Not saying you can't daily one, but I wouldn't. I see it as a Jeep, motorcycle, jet ski, etc. It's for me to have fun. But I would not judge the guy that does. Do what you like.
I agree, for me it would ruin the fun of the car if I didn't take a break. But it is impressive that it has everything someone needs to do the job, comfortably and relatively efficiently.
I daily drove a C4 and got 26-28 mpg highway, about 14-18 daily.
It's pretty damn impressive. The gearing and aerodynamics really make it.
Once again Matt is on point. I live in NJ and have 2 kids who play hockey and have a long commute. I drive 30,000 miles a year and I’d say I “half daily” my LT4. I put on 15,000 miles a year, take it to Costco, work, concerts, camping trips, even take one kid to hockey practice and games. It is easily one of the most reliable, enjoyable and versatile 2 seater sports cars. I even put my bicycle in the rear with ample room for other stuff. In comparison you can’t even fit a single golf bag in a 2024 corvette.
I am so glad you are out there loving that beautiful C4 LT4 man!
I thought the excuse for the C8’s ugly ass was that it holds two golf bags!
There was a guy doing it in 2018 on the southside of Chicago
Not shocked!
Daily driving my 91 6-speed in Mississippi. I’m a car guy so I do have other stuff in my fleet, but my 91 is so comfortable and fun to drive. Favorite car so far in my 46 years on earth.
The 91's have a really nice seat design too, I haven't sat in them but they look extra comfortable. I've had C4's from 1985 to 1996, and they have all have some of the most comfortable seats in any car, let alone a sports car. They really let you soak up the miles. A 1991 6 speed is a great one. One I'd love to own, because you have the good ZF 6 speed, and you've got the last 350 TPI that makes absolute gobbbbbbs of torque right off idle. That must be a blast!
Installing mine next week! Thanks for the tips
Absolutely! Let me know how you like it once it's on. There is definitely some drone, especially with the top up, but man... with the top down cruising, it is an amazing enhancement for me!
These are the best c4 videos
That means more than you know. Thank you so much for watching, and I'm glad you enjoy. I am trying to think of what to cover next. I am debating on doing an exhaust on the car, but I also kind of like how quiet it is. It's so serene to cruise in!
@@mattquerio I’m going to change the exhaust on mine soon because I want to be able to hear the v8 a little more and I don’t like the stock tips
Same here. I do like the quiet cruising, but I've been eyeing this. Chambered exhaust with much better looking tips, for $815. Seems like a bargain. highfloperformance.com/products/96-lt4-catback-chambered-exhaust-with-c6-dual-exhaust-tips
Daily driving my 96, just hit 1 year and 18,000 miles. Such a blast to drive, now time to save up for a manual swap!
Damn! 18,000 miles in 1 year! You are a legend for that!
Cheaper to just trade yours for a 6 -Speed.
Florida owner here, dailied my 85 for about 2 years, was awesome. Relatively reliable with minor issues, i will say i do all the work on my car, which does save tons on repairs.
People don't realize how comfortable these are. They are truly a great comfortable, livable car. And I agree, doing your own maintenance and minor repairs saves a bundle.
I live in Florida and daily a 4th gen Trans Am, m6, its my first car. Its possible no matter who ya are lol.
You guys and your good weather. I'm jealous lol
@@mattquerio All good except the terrible sun damage to everything, and the monsoons trying to turn my Firebird into a submarine. hahaha
Good vid. My issues as a daily driver, is finding a qualified mechanic is most impossible. 2 in urban areas the low height around semis is nerving. As you stated the age of the c4 is a issue. I guess the amount of mileage commuting is important. I could also see drive ups, banks and fast food might not be feasible. Your drive vido motivated me to get the car out yesterday. Everything went well. Thanks
Thanks Gary! I agree, it does depend on where you drive. I can see the city being a lot less fun to daily one of these. The age of the car is an issue, but if they are maintained properly, I think it's just fine. But so many of these cars sit for so long, and have items that need addressed to be daily driven. I've done banks and drive throughs, it's low, but you can pull it off! And I am glad my drive video got you to get the car out!!!! Thanks as always, Enjoy that car!
@@mattquerio you are right. I hope the youth takes up the torch. C4 is a great car.
i been using my c7 since i bought it in march.... almost 3k miles so far
I bet that is absolutely wonderful to daily. I have not driven a vette newer than C4. I can imagine the C7 is far more livable yet! Not to mention an absolute beast. I'd get tickets. Lol.
*Thank you Everyone!* *I’m encouraged more and closer to get the same C4* *I live 5min from San Francisco Airport and 3 min away from work by freeway with a 92 Corolla 70mph, I do need the C4 so Corolla is not stressed*
Get the C4. Do it!
I daily my LT4
Dudes see this and be like "Hell Yeah." :salute:
I’ve been dailying my LT4 for 2 years now, it’s got about 104k miles and has been a pretty great experience. Optispark failed 3 weeks after I bought it but the car gave me no further problems after sorting that out. Superb car, planning to keep it for years to come.
That's awesome. People get scared of the opti, but you do it once with an upgraded unit and you are good to go.
How’s the drone on the highway?
Dreadful if I'm honest. I don't really use the car for anything but top down backroad driving, but if I used it for commuting or anything I would rip this off. The drone is exponentially worse with the top up. It is definitely on the aggressive side of the scale.
@@mattquerio good to know..I’ll probably steer clear of this one then.
Cool video bud... love it..
Thanks man, I'm glad you enjoyed it!!! Thank you for taking the time to watch!
When I see e36 m3 bring what they bring, and c4's bringing what they bring. Boggles my mimd how slept on the c4 is. I think that is mostly due to social media.
It is absolutely insane how cheap these cars still are relative to the performance (for the era it is extremely good). Not to mention how insanely capable the chassis is in stock form. I've sold 3 LT4's prior to this. I was lucky to find this car with 63k miles as clean as it is. It's a keeper. I am actually thinking of building a garage, which means I might need to let a car go to free up funds. I don't want to sell anything, but I can tell you that if I do, it will not be the LT4.
Gotta keep the oddballs alive!
Amen!!!
Thanks for posting all of this C4 content! I picked up an LT1 car a few weeks ago that I'm in the process of sorting out. I did a full tune up and there aren't any apparent vacuum leaks, but it idles around 1,000rpm when it's warm. Every encounter that with any of your LT1 cars? I'm getting mixed signals from all the forums I've been searching on the matter. It is an M6 car. Thanks again and keep posting the new camera is great!
Thank you for the kind words! Congrats on the car as well. The idle thing, that can be tough. If I would guess something like an idle air control module, or something of the sort. Vacuum would be my first guess, like you said. I really don't have any good input on that one, I'm sorry to say!
Not a Corvette, but I live in Ohio and I've daily driven fourth gen Firebirds for 24 years. Both v6 and v8 models. I have one for the winter and one nice TA for car shows. I'm sure a C4 can be driven daily.
Man that is impressive in Ohio. Honestly, having 2 is pretty brilliant. One for the salt, and one for the sun! Do you run winter tires, or just a good all season?
@@mattquerio I have all season Cooper tires on the winter/bad weather Firebird. I've only been stuck once and needed a tow. I would love to get a Corvette someday, but for now I just watch Corvette videos on TH-cam. I enjoy your channel.
I would say you Absolutely can because the #C4stillrealavent
I think if I was down south this would be the daily for the money. It's a luxury car, it's a sports car, and on the highway it's an economy car. I agree. #C4stillrelevant !
What camera did you get?
It's a GoPro Hero 12! This is 4k 60hz, but it'll do 5.3k 120hz. But man would the files get big!
The gas mileage is actually really good for the type of car. I get 17 miles per gallon with a super heavy foot!! So regular driving it would be extremely good for a V8
I agree, especially considering it doesn't have the benefits of modern cars like variable valve timing, and direct injection. Your 17mpg car will dust so many 10mpg cars from the muscle car era!
@mattquerio I know!!! Lol but trying to get the average person to understand that is pretty damn hard!!! 🤣🤣🤣 I was messing around with a dude in a really nice 68 chevelle and dude is floored and I'm dead on his back bumper hitting and then lifting off the throttle over and over again stuck to his bumper!!🤣🤣🤣 he didn't like that too much I don't think! He was giving me a dirty look through the side mirror! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lmao
That is the perfect driving perspective. Are you using a head strap?
I did just drop A LOT of money on a new go pro hero 12, and I got the kit with the headstrap. I need to make slight adjustments, I'm still feeling like it's a little high in some parts of the video!
@@mattquerio I love it. I think I want one.
Mine just touched 74,000 miles and it's dependable. It took some sorting out first though.
I think that is what it's all about. Regular preventative maintenance and there is no reason why you can't just rack the miles up. What year is yours?
I have a 1994 and A 1987 both convertibles In Ontario lol
@@mattquerio I have a very special 95.Grand Sport Tribute car.
@@mattquerioI have a 88 35th anniversary car with 127k I daily drive. When getting a c4 you will have to sort some stuff out. Personally I daily it but I have multiple cars. If daily driving a classic keep 1500 back in reserve in case you need it
My 93 mr2 hit 212k miles and is all good even the pop ups works
That looks like a dream ride Matt. Just got back from cruising in the '04 C5. I think the Corvette is a "want to" car, not a "have to" car. I wanted to go for a ride earlier, I didn't have to. But the rain cleared out here in this part of Georgia, so I washed it, dried it, started it up and turned on the A/C. Went inside and changed clothes. The sun was beating down on the car, so by the time I got inside it was cooled off and the engine warmed up. I get the whole "thing" about a Corvette. It's not a necessity, it's kind of a desire fulfilled.
You hit the nail on the head again. I think that is why I so seldomly choose to drive this car to work. It isn't a conscious "I don't want to" thing, it's just that it is so much easier to hop in my truck and go. But every single day when I get out of work, I wish I had driven the vette. If I drove it every day, I think the sparkle would dim and the charm would wear off. I would simply ruin what it stands for, for me.
Yikes
I drove a 1990 convertible every day for 10 years and loved every minute of it. I love that car. I reluctantly had to sell it in 2010 when I really needed the money and I regretted it ever since. I've always missed that car. I finally was able to get another one in 2019 - a 1992 - and this time I'm not selling it, even though I also have a C5 now - my other dream car. The C4 is a special car - especially the 1990s C4.
Envy u beautiful ride❤
Thank you my friend! I appreciate the love.
