  • Ten years after Martyrs, director Pascal Laugier brings us a new tale of terror. And while we shouldn't compare them, with a "classic" like Martyrs under his belt, it's kinda hard not to... So, how does Ghostland hold up?

Horrible Reviews Of course! Even if a movie isn’t good, you still appreciate it for what it really is. Plus your detailing are pretty rad.

I like this new series where you just talk about a film. Liked the disturbing movies and video nasties better but this is at least better than not uploading anything. You're always fun to watch.

This plot twist was done in a series called “Harry Potter”, where an abused orphan boy is kept locked in a cupboard by his cruel aunt and uncle and invents this elaborate fantasy world to deal with his daily trauma in which he’s a wizard and has friends and shit

The great thing about Pascal Laugier's work is the way he fucks with perceived expectations with regard to timing. Martyrs was a masterclass in scaring through editing because he would wait a beat or beat and a half longer than we are conditioned to expect (the breakfast table shooting) or he'd edit things a half a beat sooner like when the abomination tackles Lucie in the hallway.
Some people will get what I'm saying, others will think I'm a nutter, but I'm curious to watch this film (I never knew it existed) to see if the cliches are done with that method. I found it very effective in Martyrs and even though cliches bore me like most people, when you fuck with the timing, you can actually make people jump.

    *MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!*
This is one of the best horror movies of all time! Every time I watch it I gain a deeper understanding of what’s going on which only serves to make the movie more scary than the last time I watched it!
*The girls never get out of the house!* Even at the end when you think they’ve been rescued... they haven’t! Beth starts dreaming again just as her hand starts to get burned by the big guy. She never stabs the guy in the shoulder, they never escape and come across the police, they are in the house the whole time. You’ll notice she hits the big guy with the typewriter which is an indication she is dreaming. At the end she looks up at the window to see her mother pointing out of the window at the typewriter, another indication she’s dreaming.
I now see a deeper meaning to this movie. Beth represents us, the people, living in and amongst a spiritual battle between good and evil that we’re unable to see. Vera represents our souls that are taking a constant beating from androgynous demonic entities, represented by the two evil psychopaths.
If only we could see the spiritual battle going on around us, every time we are tempted by and succumb to sin within this world, our souls are under attack from demonic entities that are becoming more and more powerfull as time moves forward in this crazy world we live in.
Vera screaming at Beth to wake up and see what’s going on, is one of the most powerful and symbolic scenes I’ve ever seen in a horror movie.

It‘s my favorite horror movie of the year so far. The two main actresses are great, especially the blonde one during the first half, it was really effective to see her suffering that much. The cinematography and set design was fantastic and it has some really intense scenes during the finale and you really root for them. My two main criticisms would be that they uses this cheesy 50s tune cliché (I really hate that one) and the twist and jumping between fiction/ timelines confused me. I prefer the first half over the second though, I thought that the first one was a bit more original than the second one, since it felt like the second half of Martyrs.

Anyone who uses the word "problematic" is just engaging in recreational outrage and trying to score points in the Oppression Olympics while simultaneously patting themselves on the back. Don't worry man, you aren't part of any "problem" Like you said, movies are movies and practically every group you can slap a label on has been portrayed as bad, good and anything in between because that's ART. It's sad af that people have to give disclaimers these days when just giving their opinions on things because they are too afraid of getting lynched by the outrage mobs... good review btw, I actually enjoyed this one more than I thought I would and even though the twist may have been done before, I think it was merited in this case and pulled off well. Cheers!

Been following you for years so glad you still do what you do! Jump scares and loud noises are incredibly cheap any human being will be scared, jump, or jolt when a loud noise happens when it’s been quiet or when something suddenly jumps at them I absolutely hate it it is cheating!!

Just watched this, and really liked how the story takes a turn. Ended up liking it almost as much as Martyrs (my #1 favourite.) Then I'm watching your clip and you blew my mind with you mentioning its the same director for both of these movies. Jump scares yes, but the psychological overtones just add to the anxiety for the view (at least for me). Loved it, and always love your reviews dude! Howdy from Australia. :)

  • @Asemafilmi

Just saw the film and honestly I really liked it! Knowing the plot twist before hand I was a bit afraid this film was sort of a one trick pony, but it actually had something else to offer too. I don't think every horror movie has to be super clever or thoughtfull to be effective. This film has some serious balls going back to the dirtiest, even dated traditions of the horror gengre and delivering them in very unapologetically packed form. I think the loudness and over the top nature of this film is exactly what I expect from Pascal Laugier. I like directors having their own style and his denifitely is something you don't see too much in mainstream movies nowadays.

I just saw it and I have to say it's quite a decent horror flick. My problem with the film is the editing, this film easily could have been a raw and grotesque film through the second half, the plot itself is very unnerving, I understand the jumpscares before the twist but after it just undermines the disturbing factor of the film. If Pascal ever gets to re-edit this movie it could easily be one of the best horror movies of this decade, if not, I bet this movie is going to be in many "underrated horror movies" list in the future.

I hate when directors try to substitute jump scares for actual horror moments. But even worse is when it isn't even a jump scare but instead just a really loud sound. I think the first time I remember a pointlessly loud sound was when I saw The Dawn of the Dead remake in theaters. They didn't go at it from the jump scare angle but purely from the crank the volume to uncomfortable angle to produce tension. When Ving Rhames chambered a round into his shotgun it was actually painfully loud. It got to the point that we thought something was wrong with the loudness equalization in the movie.

Yeah I think jumpscares are cheap. They're OK once in a while, but when you realize a movie is only using them, it's like...I'd rather see a scary movie where the mood, soundtrack, performances, ideas stay with me. Ones where I'm creeped out even thinking about it later.

I have the feeling that all movies done these last 15 years ( with some rare exceptions ) are just beta tests . None one dares to make something unique like in the 70's , 80's and mid 90's if it is movies or series . All seem to be more deja vu from movies not even old enough less than 5 years , and the new tendency the "cliché" what so wrong with that ?? Horror movies whatever the genre ghosts, slashers, .... always had the same thing .....( to make an easy example , how can an action movie evolve to an action movie?? There will always be a good guy , a bad guy , a cause heist, drugs, money, bio chemical bomb, nuclear bomb , a couple of sexy girls one of them the good guy will love and will kiss at the end credits , alot explosions , car planes boats chases , some epic one-liners that are now inexistant in nowadays movies .....and oh yeah the trown in the face politicaly correctness, feminism, etc...that ruins it all .....Would be very hard to have a great Western or Gangster movie today since alcohol, smoking is bad and prohibited ...sighs....) what i dislike in nowadays movies are even if people falls in mud or other dirty stuff they all show too clean , then we have the same boring colors blue-ish, green-ish, orange-ish instead to offer natural colors like they did decades ago . Also the non-use of natural landscapes alot today is just CGI-ish a fake forest , a fake city , etc.....The over abused jumpscares like we can't live without them....i love more One Jumpscare in a horror movie but it need to be "THE JUMPSCARE" . The abusing shaking cameras that we can't see shit and can't enjoy a movie anymore ( says already enough it's a shit movie anyway ) . The music mostly out of context with the genre of movie Dubstep with horror ?? heavy metal with Western ?? And last the screamings from girls or women and kids please stop making our ears bleed surely if it last for like 10 minutes in the whole movie .

The Horror-movie-genre is dying. Well, it's more or less dead.
It's all the same nonsense made for the young audience who only want to see Jump-scares, and hear loud noices.
Even Asia Horror is finito.... They milked this genre a bit too hard. Now the cow is dead!

Oh my fucking god Jeroen I've been playing Banjo Kazooie since it got released on the N64 and I've been a fan of Grant Kirkhope since then. You taught me something today about Teddy Bears' Picnic. I owe you one my friend.

Haha awesome :-D Yeah, that game is pretty great right... And it's all good, when it comes to music-that-inspired-the-soundtrack-of-Banjo-Kazooie, I'm just spreading the word!
