  • From the director that brought us the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, as well as The Ring, comes this big horror/mystery movie that somehow didn't receive a lot of attention. Let's take a look at it!

    Funny review. When I was watching the movie, my mind was constantly comparing it to Shutter Island. So the reveal made me happy that they were at least trying to tell a different story. If you're a fan of horror movies with characters grossly obsessed with their mortality, Antiviral is a pretty weird flick.

    Incredible film, honestly. It trailed off near the end and has some pacing issues (which I could tolerate), but the originality and the oddly Lovecraft-lite fantasy vibe makes it so, so memorable. The atmosphere was so cold, leaving everything to be surreal and grim. I can't really think of any recent horror (more thriller/mystery, I know) that I'd put in the same category as this film, it was just pleasant, especially after how misleading/un-informing the trailers for it were.

      Magpiestripe exactly. That’s how I felt, especially about the end. It felt beautiful and fluid (pun unintended) up until the end.

      With a good script, it would most definitely could have been one of the best horror movies ever. Wasted potential imo

      Magpiestripe i wouldn't of minded the end so much, if it was handled better. It just seemed so sloppy and killed the vibe the movie had built up until that point.

    I loved it. I agree, it is very silly, but most Gothic horror stories are pretty ludicrous. Even warhorses like Poe's Fall of the House of Usher and Richard Matheson's Hell House are absurd when you think about them, but that's kind of the point. Taking an over-the-top, melodramatic premise and turning it into an atmospheric tale of terror. It reminded me of films like Roger Corman's Poe adaptations, Mario Bava films like Black Sunday and Baron Blood and other 60s and 70s Gothic horror movies, but with a little Cronenberg style body horror thrown in. Yeah, it was outrageous, even silly, but it was also mysterious, atmospheric and beautifully shot. I saw it in a theater, so that helped as well!

      WeirdCityCitizen in short terms, at the end of the film the villain is defeated and both the girl and lockhart are free from the centre. As he is peddling away from the burning centre on a bike, he ominously turns to the camera and grins psychotically, suggesting that he could possibly be planning on going back to his commercial roots with the idea of selling the immortality juice that the baron had discovered

    I love your style of reviewing movies. That train shot was amazing, I bet even the cinematographer wasn't expecting that. I mean, why would he. Though just going on this review he does seem to like symmetry and reflective shots (i.e. the pool shot which was also amazing). Looks like a film that had great potential - just perhaps let down by an overly convoluted plot.

    Haha I feel like you summed this movie up really well. I saw it a few weeks ago & I really liked it but I did have a lot of questions after. At one point I really thought it was going to be the same ending as shutter island, I thought the guy in it looked a bit like him too, but I was glad the ending was different even if it was a bit weird. Love your videos! And would be awesome if you could do another one of those videos where you read all the funny comments you get 😂x

    I really loved this movie! It was visually stunning, absolutely flawless. I definitely see how people could think the story was crazy though lol But that's part of what I liked so much. It's SO wtf, not at all what I was expecting going into it.
    SPOILERS -
    Anyone who has seen the movie, what did you make of Lockheart's smile at the end when they were riding away on the bike? Based on the dialogue it seems like he was just happy to be leaving his corporate life behind. But his smile looked so EVIL, was the baron in his body? Or is that just how Dane Dehaan's face looks? Lol

    I have been so scared to watch this video becasue I LOVE this movie so much and I was afraid that you would hate it. I'm glad that you liked it though, even if you thought it was silly. I definitely can't deny that it is silly, but I just love everything about it. I even love the ending and the delve into madness. The over-the-top-ness of the whole thing just pays off in my opinion. I think the fact that it is so odd is almost a swerve in and of itself. Like, think about what the movie "could" have been. I like it like it is!

    Spot on review! I also enjoyed the movie so much for what it was visually and the tension at work for about 3/4 of it, but the storyline revealed at the end was absolutely ridiculous. I was so excited to recommend this movie to a lot of people, but am now hesitant. A bit of a waste of amazing cinematography. Had the plot reveal been much strong (and a different plot revealed all together, lol, this would have been an astounding film. What a shame!

    I loved the movie, the cinematography was wonderful and I welcomed the Lovecraft vibes. Theatre was empty when I saw it, aside from a few people who walked out and were noticeably dissapointed, mainly due to confusion and frustration over the last 15 minutes of the film.

    I have to agree with you on this one, Horrible Reviews. Although A Cure for Wellness was visually great, it lacks in a cohesive story. My fiancé and I felt ripped off since we saw it in theaters and waited 2 1/2 hours for a random ending. It started off strong and promising, and the ending couldn't come soon enough. I think they were trying to go for a twist ending and didn't execute it correctly.

  • @Japo006
    @Japo006 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a fantastic film, very engrossing. I'm not sure that the employees had to know about the operation in order to go along with it, though I can see the Baron potentially bribing them. A small scene would've explained this, but the lack of it doesn't detract. As for the daughter, she'd been groomed from birth by her father, it's not hard to believe she'd keep her mouth shut. Anyways, have you seen the Belgian film "Left Bank"? Very similar to this one, gorgeous visuals and all. The story for that one is much more ambiguous than this one, however, but I still enjoyed it a lot.

    • @Japo006
      @Japo006 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, the only thing I didn't understand with this film was the eels ... I can understand them using the old people as a purifying system for the liquid, but why the eels? I thought they were collecting the piss and sweat of the old people, so why? Just to dispose of the bodies? Eh...

  • @ama-gii
    @ama-gii 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was expecting weird illogical aspects in this movie simply because it's a normal guy discovering a new universe. In the castle, time, privacy and souls are ripped out to create a crazy underground institute. (That would maybe answers your question about the silliness of the movie)
    Nevertheless, i respect your opinion and keep making great reviews

    This movie was amazing visualy, kept you invested & guessing. Definitely worth a watch until the reveal. Just look up reviews to know that moment if you haven't seen this. I would of praised this movie like no tomorrow if they ended it before the big reveal. But NO, you can't end a movie now without answers. That's were I praise Nolan, he's the only one now who has the balls to do so. I almost walked out after the reveal, I should of.

    I had the mostly the same view about this movie. After 2 hours of runtime and all that tension building up it's really hard come up with an amazing ending that isn't some trope twist but it seemed obvious by that point what was gonna happen and the way it played out was so out of place with the rest of movie. Like you said don't overthink it and it's a solid movie.

    I really did enjoy A cure for wellness, not only the visuals, but i really liked the story, even if it gets a little too convoluted for it's own good.
    My only issue is the ending, the last shot of danedehaan smiling, it felt forced, it didn't seem to fit in.
    But the movie, as ilogical as it is, it's made to be that way, as also are the characters.

    I've always thought that Verbinski was a criminally underrated auteur. I even like The Lone Ranger for being a strange subversion of its genre. Disney let him get away with a lot of stuff. That scene at the end of the world where Johnny Depp is talking to himself and licking rocks is borderline a avant garde sequence in a Hollywood blockbuster film.

    • @HugoSoup57
      @HugoSoup57 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eh, I wouldn’t call Gore Verbinski underrated. He made one good movie that I’ve seen, and that was Rango. I’d admire The Lone Ranger for being subversive if it wasn’t so badly paced, badly written, and if the special effects were actually good.

    I thought this movie was rather mediocre. There were some solid performances and the creepy Lovecraftian atmosphere, however the script wasn’t very good and the pacing made the film feel really dragged out at times. Yes, that’s perhaps my biggest complaint, this movie was just way too long. Again, A Cure for Wellness has some good aspects, but overall it felt like wasted potential to keep.

    I loved that movie. Me and my friend were hanging out one evening, and suddenly we were in the mood for a horror movie. The reviews for this were very mixed, but we gave it a shot and went to the late night screening for this. It was surprisingly good, I basically enjoyed everything in it from the the location and its atmosphere to the actors and the story itself.

    The ending was the best but it definitely didn't make me love this movie any less. It's in my top 10 movies of 2016.

    This movie was very pretty, but very, very long. I didn't much care for that rape-y ending. Good review though.

    If Dane DeHaan hadn't been in it, I think the movie would have been better. He is so wooden its beyond belief.

    I hated this movie because of the STUPID ending, specially the "CGI green face"... that ruined everything for me. I thought it was a psychological thriller at first, and in the end it was a dumb, silly and baldy made horror movie... I was really disappointed.
