  • Porsche 924 Vacuum leak repair using a smoke tester! The Porsche 924 has had a rough idle and appears hot on the temperature gauge since I bought the car. I suspected a vacuum leak but to test my theory I bought a vacuum tester that uses smoke to locate any holes. This worked fantastic and quickly found a cracked idle air control hose under then manifold.
I was able to source a hose by matching up the shape at my local oreillys. Here is the one I bought:

As far as the smoke machine is concerned there are a million options out there ranging from inexpensive DIY solutions to higher end devices so do your research there to see if something fits your needs. For me I did like the idea of making one but this was just so quick and easy and saved time.

I made my smoke machine from a computer power source, an old spray gun and a diesel glow plug. Easiest way to track down vacuum leaks, and practically the only way to find some EVAP leaks.
TH-cam has a bunch of videos about DIY machines, built with various levels of technical execution. One uses a cigar for the ignition source LOL, but heck, the guy showed that it worked fine. For 50 bucks though, the setup you bought looks like a winner.

I saw that cigar one! The diy approach looked fun but my biggest expense is time so spending the $50 to have it done was why I chose that

Good spot. Smoke machine is definitely a good investment especially with turbo engines

Great work!, putting some effort in doing the basics, actually finding the fault, not changing parts randomly and blaming the car that its shit like most seem to do nowdays.

Exactly! I'm very big on proper diag first because...I've been the guy throwing parts at a problem. Spending a small bit of time before to narrow it down saves sooooo much on the backend

Mpg gauge is funny! It reads manifold pressure but is shown with markings for mpg. It looks to act as I think it should now. Nice job.

From what I understand it reads GPH on startup and anything under 10mph. Above 10mph it should be in the MPG range where it definitely seems off. Its saying I get less than 10mpg while driving when the car gets around 30. I need to figure out what its doing.

Good to see what vapor leaks can cause… rough idle…

Unmetered air is definitely not something you want. This changed how the car drove. Pretty awesome!

Amazing the difference a small vaccuum leak makes. Also awesome that you didnt need the specific porsche part.

An unlit propane torch can do the same thing...where the leak is the rpms increase.

Drain the olive oil from the banelli for some vegan smoke. May smell better than some Johnson & Johnson.
What a cool little device. Marketplace cheap too. $50 for a tool that you’ll use more than once and specific enough for those niche jobs like that.
I could feel the back of my knees aching just watching you get into the engine bay. I’ll have to do something similar on the NOT-SO Grand Caravan. They put the oil cooler & filter housing under the intake in between the heads. Plastic parts that crack. Of course I find out after a 4 day weekend & making it right with some new headlights.

@@tangentsbhb Just not a fan of channels that give a teaser. I don't need it to see the video.

    • @tangentsbhb
      @tangentsbhb  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I would agree 100% with you but unfortunately the vast majority of people need to see some sort of preview to know they wish to stick around for the rest of the video. Data shows the first 15 seconds is the most critical so that's why it's necessary to have a good intro. You wouldn't go to see a movie without first seeing a preview so the logic has been proven for over 75 years.
