  • Here is an weird way to open a pad lock with a pair of wrenches. I was not sure if this actually worked so I tried it out. If you ever get in a situation where you have to break a padlock a set of wrenches may work.

    the trick works best with non-adjustable wrenches, due to the rounded edges. The right size wrenches are just as important. If done correctly, with correctly sized crescent wrenches, its just as easy as using the key.

    I think we all can agree that the only reasonable course of action is to pass comprehensive wrench control legislation. There's no reason in 21st century America that civilians need access to wrenches. There are plenty of trained mechanics and service technicians available to make repairs if something goes wrong. If just one Master lock can be saved, isn't it worth it?

    This can be prevented. The shackle (Curved part can be protected). Find metal nuts that just fit over the shackle leg. Stack them together on one side and close the lock. This closes the area for any wrench to be inserted. Problem solved. The only way left is to cut the shackle is with a high speed grinder with metal cut-off wheel (. )l(. )

    In my high school, if you forgot your combination, the custodian would hold a big flat blade screwdriver horizontal, place its tip end on top of the lock body, hold firmly on the screwdriver handle, and hit down on the screwdriver shaft about an inch back from the lock body with a hammer. Lock popped right open, and worked just fine afterwards. The school actually recorded all the lock combinations, but the custodian found his method to be quicker. And he was not good at math ;)

    Most thieves would have just ran off with the whole tool box...
    I think I'd spring for a cheap bolt cutter or hacksaw before banging up my knuckles like that. Or maybe a battery powered 4.5" grinder.
    The bottom line is if a thief wants something, they will likely find a way to steal it. A padlock only slows them down.
    A pissed off owner with a 12ga or a baseball bat is more of a deterent.

    That's pretty disturbing. I guess from here on out I'm going to have to test any new padlocks I try to see if they are susceptible to this. I wonder how secure the round locks with the sliding curved steel shank are. To be honest, the comment made earlier about what Grandpa said (that "locks will only keep honest people honest") is true. If somebody wants something bad enough my experience has always been that they can break into it. Most a good lock can do under those circumstances is to slow people down so your best defense is to set up something that alerts you if a lock is being screwed with (and then show up with shotgun in hand and a loud voice to ask wtf they think they're doing). LOL

    We use wrenches all the time at work when clearing out lockers after people get fired. Most of the time you cant get bolt cutters on while its on the locker. You use the biggest wrenches you can fit and put one in your stomach and two hands on the other. Its faster and safer than bolt cutters.

    Thanks. Great information. Made me realize that my own locks are vulnerable and too easy to defeat. Now I'm going to my storage trailer and change the locks to the round ones that don't have enough room to get a wrench in them. All pad locks are defeatable to some degree but some are much harder to defeat than others and some can only be defeated with tools that will make a lot of loud noise in the process. When it comes to quality and security...You get what you pay for.

    If your going have wrenches with you, just get out the bolt cutters, they work a lot easier, and you won’t bust your knuckles.

    • @DesertFernweh
      @DesertFernweh 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bolt cutters are alot harder to carry, most will not fit in a backpack and tougher to explain why you have them. Two open end wrenches are easy to carry and explain to curious John Q Laws why you have them in your bag. Not advocating, just explaining.

      I live on a ranch in Texas and bolt cutters come in different sizes, I use mine often to cut fencing sheets and barb wire, and if I didn’t have a bolt cutter and could easily saw the lock off with my hacksaw within a 30 seconds, and I do, keep a hacksaw in my tool box. Just saying, I never know what I might need during the day. We don’t wear backpacks.

    No thieves were helped. Thieves do things differently than we law abiding people think, usually oriented around speed or convenience. They wouldn't bother breaking a lock, they'd probably break the latch off the toolbox or use a tin snips to cut the lid off. I heard vehicles in my lot were getting gas stolen, so I bought a locking gas cap. Nope, turns out they were putting a pan under the gas tank and using a cordless drill to drill a hole in the tank and steal the gas that way. Yeah, causing hundreds of dollars of damage to a truck (many trucks, actually) just to steal $30 worth of gas, in a country that already has some of the cheapest gas for sale.

    The Brinks padlock sold by Walmart can be purchased at Harbor Freight Tools under the name "Security." Both are made to look like the more expensive padlocks, but with weaker metals. Every video I've seen on this topic uses a padlock that was never designed to resist being forced open. One that has been designed to resist force will cost 4, 5, or even ten times more and will most likely snap one of the wrenches. People say that made in America is better than made in China, but I fail to see the difference between made in China and purchased at Wal-Mart.

    Not my line of work BUT, that vertical technique that you demonstrate can also be done with a hammer hitting the body of the lock down. On your toolbox, the hasp is soft steel. Far easier to break that or cut it off.
