This was an eye-opening experience as both Jeff and I felt that we were more protected with a few simple locks. The fact that anyone with two dollars worth of tools could break a lock in a few seconds is absolutely scary.
If you put a lot of faith in these style locks to protect something very expensive, think again. Come up with better ways to slow thieves down.
For trailers, we are now going to use an RV stabilizer that you tighten in between the tires also. We are adding more security to them by making the thieves have to remove more just to take it.

A lock only slows down a thief. That, in most cases is enough. And there are more secure locks that are very expensive. I like the ones that shroud the bolt. But, as I said they only slow down the thief. Given enough time, and ANYTHING can be broken into. Thanks for the demo guys.
That is true. It was eye-opening for us to do this and realize that the items we trusted to be secure were not at all.
With all the cordless grinders out now...anyone planning on stealing can. At my wife's work thieves took a grinder and cut the catalytic converter out of every lifted truck in the back of the parking lot. (Where the employees park at a hospital).
A lock will slow down a thief, but a Smith and Wesson will stop a thief.

It seems EVERYONE on YT is showing how to bust open a lock... but they are all doing it with the lock held in their hand. How about repeating the test with the lock in a hasp on a door or gate or toolbox. I'm not saying it still can't be done but things change when you don't have all that room to get two wrenches in there.
We were just learning here. We have plans to expand on this and also add in more expensive locks. We will never fit everyone's scenario in here, but we can show more.
@@WorkshopAddict Regardless of the lock cost it seems meaningless to break them open on the bench. Put them on a hasp/gate/toolbox and then try to break them open as that's what a thief would do.
exactly my thought. it's not about fitting everybody's scenario but having a realistic one would have been nice. if I had a lock sitting in my driveway and somebody showed up and broke it I probably wouldn't mind.

For real. I'm having a hell of a time with this padlock on my gate of my new house the previous owners left. The wrenches won't fit in the narrow space and slip frequently.
Thanks guys! Had a small Masterlock stuck on on my travel golf bag case and no key for it. Just wanted it off. Used the prying technique with no problem. Very cool and very informative regarding how little security these locks provide.
My shed lock wouldn’t open after the winter so I just tried this with two random wrenches, and it took me less than 60 seconds to pry it open. Crazy. Thanks guys👍🏿

THANK YOU!!! I'm in the process of moving, and bouncing between towns 2.5 hours away. I went to shift the shed contents to the garage on the last day before the moving truck is here, only to find a stuck lock on the shed 😢. The key turned properly, the initial hasp click would engage, but no pop. Tried lube. Tried tapping. Tried picking it. Tried the rapid jiggle-pull. Tried begging. Your video was the 5th or 6th i came across, over the course of 2 hours that I didnt have to spare to start with. Holy hell, it worked!!! I used a variation of the wrench pry. Wound up using an adjustable wrench leveraged kinda sideways between the lock top and the piece the lock hasp goes through on the shed (thing.. I can't come up with the name at the moment) Pulled down using some body weight and BAM! I can finally get my stuff out and get back to work. I really can't thank you guys wlenough for this video!

Agree with your findings. I would add that if the lock is on something, it will be much more difficult (if not impossible) to position wrenches to get the leverage you need. Drilling the cylinder is probably the easiest thing to do.
WorkshopAddict - A very good job and nice demonstration. Everyone who uses these locks should watch this video for education and awareness of how easily their security can be compromised. I have heard for decades that Master Locks are worthless horse shit, but I had no idea those locks were that bad....unbelievable.

I watched this to figure out how to break a lock on a trunk that I bought because its closed on the latch. I ended up unscrewing the latch to slip the lock off.

Had a Fortress Bike lock that I lost the key too. Didn't have as big of wrenches as you guys did so I used a 10" pipe wrench. Used the force upwards and it came off instantly, easier than the 2 wrenches.

Thanks lads. I just took a 20+ yo lock off a chest from my father in laws house. Used first method, really surprised how little effort was needed, i thought an older lock would be better quality.
I have a master lock with a hex sided shackle (vs round), and I tried bolt cutters on it and they bolt cutters just slid off and never were able to get a bite into the shackle. I suspect the wrenches might still work. Nothing other than the noise is going to stop a cordless grinder.
At the time there were no locks on the mark that could deal with a cutting wheel. Now there is the Altor U lock. My critism of that lock though is the inner dimensions are tiny which makes it hard to lock a bike frame and a pole inside it. In other words it has limited lock up combinations and required multiple cutting discs and multiple batteries to have a chance to cut through it.

Alot of lock manufacturers like Master Lock offer premium locks for more money that might be better made with better metallurgy... They can get expensive.. Some Abus locks are ridiculously expensive... but you're not just going to snap them.... Thanks fellas. .. Good stuff... videos like this are important...they help us rethink how we're doing things... and maybe spending a little more money is worth it... Gotta do the research though... They could just be more money but not more secure...
We should spend some money on higher end locks to figure this stuff out.

I use Brink locks, but all locks can be picked if you have lots of practice with different prototypes.

All that said, I’m a bit surprised at y’all and your lack of understanding regarding locks and their mechanisms. Especially at your ages. Nevertheless, apologies for seeming unappreciative, that is not the case.
So at work we have these newspaper stands with small screens attached. The screens are locked, and the key was lost long ago. I’ve been tasked with removing said locks, and I had no clue how. Thanks.

Very helpful. I locked a gate latch with a Master lock with the key insertion point in wrong direction. This inexpensive lock allows the u-bolt portion to pass all the way through the lock, and if you go too far there is not enough room to insert the key. This kind of lock is good for a chain, but user beware! I'll likely buy a new lock after I destroy this one, but first I'll try and hacksaw the key to see if I can slip it in.
I just had exact same problem (put it on backwards in the dark). Opened it with heavy duty paper clip and LARGE screwdriver. I WAS disappointed in Master, but it IS true … most locks only help against honest folks.

Seen other videos. Locks only keep honest people honest. It's sad that a lock fails that easy. Crazy to see in action and makes you feel unprotected.
The one who said it's was easy showing how to break lock while not on she'd eat. is correct. I tried doing it while my lock in on she'd was impossible. Did it with angel grinder ....wolf easy thanks viewer for the right advise. Been going crazy looking for key to no avail and need to get in she'd for heaters, just did it after the s.art o e with the real helpful advice. Thx Cynthia Medina

I've learned everything I ever needed to know from TH-cam. Fantastic. 🤣 I think padlocks are a deterrent to the opportunist thief. That's all.
Now we have cordless grinders and recip.saws that also make it easy to remove locks that we no longer have key for.

Had a Brink lock on my outdoor storage box that we lost the key to. It took me 10 minutes to break it and it popped the round side piece out. Tried it a final time and it broke from the side of the base, not from the U part. Thanks for the help.
I've had to pop my own tool box lock. Used a spud wrench. I'm building a padlock with a square 1095 shackle to lock the smithy. The bolt goes all the way through the shackle and into the lock body. Not easy to break

Do the wrench trick with an ABLOY padlock. 10mm shackle or bigger. Wear safety goggles and gloves too.

In this and other spanners and lock videos I have seen fall short of an in situ test, as a thief would be presented with. Try putting the lock through a hasp on a door - the shorter padlock should be harder because there is little room to insert the spanners. So please do a video as I suggest and then we will see.
Was there any damage to the wrenches like deforming the open end or permanently spreading it?

I don’t have the hand strength for the wrench method, but a cutting wheel on my grinder did it in a couple of seconds.

Was this ever revisited with the lock being placed where a lot should be placed and then trying to break it off?
I saw there was several comments about how they're always broken being held in their hands but never on the clasp.
I would like to see how well a thief can actually get it off of the item being locked when there's limited room and leverage also when having to continue look over your shoulder to see if someone's coming plus being loud.
There could easily be a test set up with motion sensors and if you set them off you're busted.

Something that you can do is to basically make you lock bolt cup proof that you put in screws and washers Tuscaloosa but over the lock shackle cuz that will reinforce the end bolt cutters open that wide
The wrenches are what I need out of the box with the lock on it!
Or even try and industrial Mastercraft lock the ones with the six pin they’ll usually have plastic going up the side where most the time that will be a little bit harder to do

I have not seen anything like that. It would not be the proper way to solder as you want the solder to move to the areas that are hot and soak in.

im an ironworker and we use a tool called a bullpin .take your pin with the thin part right directly above the key hole (the top) then hit it with your hammer bang one shot every time
iron workers hammers are measured in lbs not oz lol mine is a 4 lb/

It's the type of force. Best I can tell, the loops on cheaper locks are cast then coated with vanadium or chrome. Look at the break. The metal will show bubble like irregularities in the break if it wast cast. You can snap those with a hammer.
There are high end and quite expensive locks out there that will have several notches on the lock end of the loop made with super strong metals. These particular locks are noticeable and can give a their that contents are quite valuable. Go mid range, preferably a solid body lock and add one extra lock latch on the trailer about 4 inches from the top of the door. Place a completely different type of cheap lock there.
Theives don't want to get caught, placing another lock to handle in a position that creates problems for leverage and risk of making too much noise.
The high priced high security locks attract the pro theifs.

There are some best Locks that have a bit more of the body covering the lock itself. I've seen some bike chains that use tough cloths covering hardened chains to help defeat grinding tools, though nothing is truly their proof... I'm kinda suprised that they havent built those cloths into the shackles....

😅 I locked my keys in my shed the other day. Then ran across this video. One thing they suggested is on double locks use 2 shim. This can come from cutting a tin can. I'm going to try that before clipping my padlock. My suggestion get a dog or bigger locks. I will replace with a fingerprint lock if I do break this one soon so I cant do this again. Come try get my thumb with my big dogs. 😉 I'll try the brinks if the shims don't work I'm breaking a lock tonight. Thanks for the help. I have 2 RN of my 8. The best way to prevent someone from breaking into your stuff is to create something that will increase the time to defeated the locking device. Crooks aren't looking to spend anymore time than the minimum necessary to steal something. All else being equal, criminals look for the lowest hanging fruit. As the value of the property increases so does the type of criminal that will be attracted to it. I weld and have been able to put together some contraptions that actually prevent the direct access to the lock. Not having direct access will most likely increase the time that is needed to defeat the lock. Another aspect of building something myself creates an aspect of unfamiliarity of the locking assembly. If the crook never before saw the item that I created it takes time to figure out how to defeat it. As far as the grinder goes, I also took into account that aspect - Tungsten carbide inserts - The grinder wheel is cutting nicely and sparks are flying, suddenly sparks stops and the wheel edge starts to glaze, and this is with a ceramic wheel. Aluminum oxide wheel basically just turns to dust. I don't want to give, here, the answer to the ones that don't know. The ones that know, know it. Increasing the depth of the material to be cut , also restricts, the option, to larger grinders and additional time. Yes there are power saws that can handle that. but also materials that can gum things up. Just don't be the easiest choice to get rip off, make the crooks go look elsewhere, they usually aren't looking for hard work.
You need to try it when it’s locked on a hidge. Very difficult to get those tools in place to actually break it
how about the better master locks, I have one that the shackle is a mix of boron and carbide, it's a little longer and has a ball bearing on each side that secures the shackle inplace. its also hex shaped which is supposedly to stop the ability to grind it off or cut it easily. i think you still could but it would take some time to cut through and someone would hear at that point.

Case hardening methods exist, that's where the outside of the metal is hardened but the inside is left compliant. This is what they do for things such as transmission gears; which must be hard on the outside so that they aren't eaten away from constant meshing, but ductile/complient so that teeth dont snap off.

From what I've seen video-wise there's enough room to fit the wrenches but not enough clearance to achieve the brutal amount of leverage seen here w/standard locks. However, unless the hasp is likewise made out of tough, case-hardened steel & also has anti-theft dimensions baked-in (which is exceedingly rare), there's still more than enough leverage available when applying the wrenches to simply tear the hasp or any of the (likely several) weak anchor points right out instead & fairly easily too for that matter...

If you want to do it quick and quiet just use the Ryobi 18v bolt cutters no effort needed

Yeh took me an hr to drill lock out on my boat hitch couldn’t get spanners on to snap it and didn’t have my keys to the city(cordless grinder) on me.
like to use one or multiple ABUS 37/70 padlocks with a Schlage security chain for the trailer. i stick it through the wheels and or frame, and attatch it to something "concrete" if possible. Nothing is bulletproof, but it makes it a legit pain in the ass. Especially if you back the trailer up to a structure first, leaving the truck attatched, alsowith a steering wheel lock.
A friend/coworker had a key that would open most master locks with very little effort and no noise.

Yesterday I did a work in my garage. Put everything back, now this morning 07/22/2023 I can’t find my keys everywhere in the house. With all my keys in my cars work locker and garage keys. I’m thinking I left my keys inside the garage 😞. I have a spare keys in my garage for some reasons it won’t open the lock. I gave up opening it. Search here how to open a lock. You can actually use two paper clips to pick a padlock also there’s all kinds of ways to open a padlock.
