I got a degree in Animal Science (Dairy) 45 years ago when AI was quite a bit different, though the basics were the same. While embrionic science may have been around they certainly didn't teach us about it. I found this immensely educational, especially the part where Marlo was emphasising reducing stress on the animals for optimal results. Love the channel. It's a lot different from New England.
My relatives raised Angus. The breeding was done "au naturale" in the field at a certain time of year. BTW, I'm old enough that I don't assume that anything is easy. It doesn't matter what: auto mechanics, well drilling, moving cattle, drywall or thermal analysis of aircraft heat exchangers. No matter what I have tried to do in life, I have had to do research, think it through and plan it out. Much respect to Marlo for her background, tenacity, consistency and care in the work that she is doing. Hey, what's for dinner tonight? ......BEEF. Just about to head down to the grill.
Absolutely astonishing! I had no idea this could be done.Vastly educational and even I could understand the reasoning behind it. I'll say it again,I get something from this channel that I can't get anywhere else. Thank you Trinity for bringing this level of content to all of us. God Speed my friend!
This was a really interesting and educational video. I know ranchers that do AI but I didn't know all the steps before that. Marlo did an excellent job of explaining it. Good job.
I had seen a little on artificial insemination or this is not what this is but I've seen a little bit on it but never in this depth and I want to thank you because it is extremely interesting even though I am not a cattle breeder and I might be 71 years old I'm still interested as long as I can learn one thing a day I'm happy. There is one thing I ain't real happy about and that's when y'all end the video with no warning but you edited it I'll watch it. Stay vigilant!
This Lady really impresses me. The honesty and professionalism. I guess her attention to detail. I used to raise hogs and at that point in time there was a degree of deception. To put it politely. P.S. I always liked working with Herefords
Florida cracker in the house, awesome channel... but you can keep all that cold weather lol. It gets to 70 degrees and I get cold. Very interesting process. Keep the vids coming.
Okay.... you have my attention Trinity! What a great video. I have two cows that will have embryos transplanted into in the spring. This is a bit new for me. We usually let the bull do this job, but it's also very exciting! Thanks a bunch for sharing! ))) I am subscribed!
I work at vet clinic that does a lot of dog reproduction. We do the implanting and we also have store semen. We don’t deal with the embryos, that is a whole nother aspect other reproduction. It was interesting learning about this in cattle. In school we also touched briefly on pig reproduction and that was interesting too.
This was really interesting info. Thanks for sharing. There's so much more to ranching than I ever imagined. I would love to visit a Montana ranch! Air bnb with the cows 🤣🤣 🐄🐄🐄🤠
Just an fyi, there is a few Airbnb's on working cattle ranches in central/ Eastern Oregon ( or there was pre-covid). You have the option to help with various tasks during the day. Only problem is finding availability.
Thank You Trinity for this video very informative. As a side bar to this video. A couple of years ago I spoke to a cattle geneticist he also explained to me. that they can use sexed semen which can you up to 90% heifers or bulls. Depending on your operation (mainly dairy operations) On the mean cow problem yes to market or in the deep freeze is the best place for that kind. Plus, if she has a heifer, she goes the same way She most likely has the old lady's temperament There is no sense to keep man eaters there are too many good ones out there. Keep up the good work
Great job on everything! The style, audio, conversational flow, action (when Marlo Leachman ? gets quiet and is doing the actual work)…I could go on and on. (Was born in Montana…your videos make me feel closer to my birthplace). Really interesting!
Hey, Trinity, just in case you ever wonder what people are up to while they are listening to you herd cattle...I defrosted my freezer. Which goes a lot faster when there is someone in the background yelling "Hey, cow. Hey, cow "
love the Channel! I appreciate how you put things in the layman's terms and explain ranching for Dummies! helps new/young farmers with the different terminology. You taught me what a heifer was, lol
I trained thru Curtis breeding service around 45 years ago to inseminate cows. Embryo transplant was a new thing that only veterinarians did. We raised Brahman cattle in south east Texas. Things have changed a little since then. We used to get 3 to 12 embryos a wash. I guess it has improved in 45 years.
It is very similar to horse IVF and all the other stuff in flushing out eggs to be implanted in a donor animal. I would love to see another video of the flushing out on cattle. Thanks for sharing! (Former BHE agri student)
cows smell like gramma's house, gramma's house was my faverite place to be, so the smell of cows is a good nastalgic smell filled with lots of good memories. I understand.

I need Marlo to AI my cows with 90 percent success rate, WOW. Mine are AI ed at like 60 percent success rate, or I just need to go to school and learn how to do it myself. This was a really well done presentation i would like to see more of Marlo on how she gets a 90 percent success rate and her on the embryo transfers. Thank you both.
@@jj-ty8vh See, I didn't consider this, i am not afraid to expose my ignorance, constructive criticism is behavioral adaptation (domestication). You cant intuit omniscience.
Great information and such a skillful example of how this all works! Was familiar with ai from when I was growing up but it has come a long way since then. How expensive is this in general ball park? Is it possible for someone on a small farm to afford this technology and save the expense of managing a bull?
That was really interesting. Do cows ever do the wild thang anymore? I guess with all that amazing science why would you when you can get the perfect cow. Oh is it expensive to breed cows this way? I know there's money to made though. Thanks for sharing that and we'll see you next Sunday. Take care from Canada eh!
Truly amazing. Animal husbandry has come a lonnnnnnnnnnnnng way! I want to see the oviduct flush filtration process! How to catch an embryo -- seems like they'd be SO DELICATE, but...can really take a lot of unnatural abuse!
Herefords are from Herefordshire, pronounced like 'hairy ford', not her ford. Just so you know for future. Great video, very very interesting and informative.
My neighbor has a low birth rate bull, and man, those babies are very stout and grow so incredibly fast. But I have noticed that all the cows are extra when a little heifer is born but laid back when they have little bulls. I don't know why. Does anyone have a possible answer?
Speaking of cattle odor . . . we horse people once debated, "What is worse? Wet dog or wet horse?" We all agreed that the non-ruminating herbivores smelled a whole lot better than wet carnivores. Same with ruminating herbivores, like cattle, sheep, and similar animals. There's something about waste products from meat eaters that makes them smell terrible.
Their arms and hands are smaller.... the same with horses and I don't think every cow likes them big paws and hands much less a horse I mean give the poor animal a break!!!!
I have a question! What kind of education does she have? Is this a short course or two that she took and then learned through experience or did she go to college specifically for this?
We do AI. I say shoulder deep to put them in, and if we have to help pull them out. But, we hire a pro for embryos, start to finish, every time. We aren't messing with that.
When I had my Herford Cow in the 90's had I had a guy come out every year to inseminat her. I would call him as soon as I saw her try to mount my sheep. He would as what I want and I would ask for an Angus bull for butcher. I would get a black white face bull every time!! 😉👍 Much better than having a Bull on the Property!!
The same is true with horses and dairy cows!!! I’ve seen the Duckboy Postcard that indicates Montana has a team who can make it work with Grizzly Bears as well!!!! However, the health benefits are not quite commensurate with the injuries sustained!!!! I guess the Rookie is the one who chloroforms the bear to get her in the receiving mood!!!! I heard they lost six members of the first team of eight when the bear they ended up trying to uh, perform their duties upon, turned out to be a scarred up old boar, who wasn’t having any!!!! 😂😂😂

Wow that sure beats the hit n miss we did on the farm...

damn.... got frostbite on my lower extremity when you said the seman is kept at -320...

Great video, however, I think the discussion on the EPD's is vague and a bit confusing the way it was presented in this video.
The EPD's may be better explained this way, the BULL/SIRE with his EPD's numbers, will produce daughters that will wean calves that have higher weaning weights (WW), higher yearling (YW), etc. His daughters should have higher expectations on Milk Production (Milk) as mature producers, etc. The (BW) EPD is the same, you pick a number for first calf heifer as it was explained and hope the birth weight outcome matches the (BW) EPD, for example I would use 2.5 BW or less for first time heifers that will calve at 24-25mo.

However, it takes time see the productivity of EPD's to actually make it into the herd, since its the offspring produced where the results will be seen.
As it was accurately stated, EPD's are a guide, not a bible. Also, the EPD's on older more mature bulls (5+ years) tend to be a little more accurate than on unproven bulls that have fewer calves with fewer statistics.
I think what would make a great extension to this video, is to return to this ranch at some point and see them implanting embryo's in to the recip cows. I think that would be an interesting contrast to the part shown in this video.
