When I was about 14-16 years old I helped a vet work cattle for our and several other farms (vaccinations, dehorn, and “cutting the bull calfs”). Never liked the cutting method - razor blade for the bottom of the sack and a cutting tool to detach. We always put a purple medicine on/in the remaining sack. Also, we had to work them the right time of year because of flys. The only good thing with the cutting method was the mountain oysters fry after all the cattle were worked. The banding method looks to be a better approach. It allows a bull to be older when worked - we would never cut a bull calf that was older. The chute system looks to be a great system (watched your video on that). Most people don’t understand what it takes to raise cattle.
This is excellent. I saw a guy use a cordless drill. It grossed me out. Ripping the bulls testicles right out of the sack. They say it's painless I doubt it. This is the best I ever seen.
Hi...... Josh Stoney Ridge Farmer nice to see you, thank you for showing your video homestead chicken Duck farmer garden 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 👕🐔🐓🐥🐕🐄🐝🌱🎥👍👍👍
Banding definitely works; but Its not better than someone that knows how to knife cut them. Done right, there is very little blood. Also, a band is not 100% pain free, they still will lay around afterwards. I had a good cattle veterinarian tell me that with banding, the scrotum has to die, then fall off, then the healing begins. With knife cutting, the healing begins as soon as they leave the chute.
this was done a week ago...the largest bull's testicles are about to drop off...the newly banded steers went right back to grazing. Much higher risk to perform a surgical procedure v/s banding the cattle. No knife, no blood, less risk for infection and the testicles simply drop right off
making Rocky mountain oyster a sharp knife used to do the same thing and open range cattle ranching at branding culling market beef. My grandfather used big rubber bans or a length of heavy twine tied in a clove hitch. If you don't know what a clove hitch is watch my videos on tying knots and splicing.
My dad used zip ties 15 years ago it worked but I look back at it now it’s pretty funny but crazy. I personally like cutting better then bands for many reason but bands stunt growth where cutting actually does not. I’ve taking calf’s don’t half banded half cut biggggg difference
@@triplehfarmsllc7348 With with cutting to get them Rocky mountain oysters my dad used to love to eat when I was a kid. He also liked pickled pigs feet, broiled calf brain, real veal. Grew up farming ranching Minisota/ Montana.
I’m growing macadamia trees on my farm. Pruning a tree to shape it has it own form of stress but it’s nothing like restricting the blood flow for bull calves. I remember helping my dad fix rubber bands around calf testicles when I was a boy. He had a device sort of like a pair of expanding pliers with two arms. Each arm had two posts. A thick rubber band was fitted around the posts then pulling in with device’s hands would expand the arms and stretch the rubber band. The band was placed over the bull’s testicles. We did this on calves a bit younger than the fellows in this video.
Josh, put something temporary on the top of where you're leaning in to the holding pen. One sudden jerk from the bull or steer, and I see you banging your head on the steel. I'm thinking one of those pipe insulators put on there, should do the trick. Just to guard from getting unnecessarily hurt. Good job, I must say!
I'm very happy with the customer service and effort that Calicrate gave us all for education here...I'm most certainly a loyal customer for life now my friend
Yep....here we have no blood, no knife, no glue, stiches or mess. Pretty happy with the bander...testicles taste like another organ meat...nothing all that special. We would have to call out a Vet for a bull the size of the 11 month old. I'm pretty happy with the simplicity of the bander
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer I've been a meat cutter for 40 years and besides being delicious they're also high-dollar. 8 to 10 bucks a pound. I don't blame y'all for doing it the easy way but when you're slaughtering 10 to 20 bulls daily and get 3 to 5 pounds per head, you save the nuts. Plus hearts, livers, tongues, tails ,head meat, beef lips and tripe. Worth an extra couple hundred dollars per head. And whether people know it or not they're probably eating some of the offal. Thanks for the reply. 🇺🇸
If the ratchet is on the right, it seems like it might have been easier to hold the band with your left; the same way you might cast a fishing rod with your left if the reel is on the right. Looks like you were getting twisted up trying to switch hands. Just a suggestion. Anyhow, nice video Josh! Cattle are a lot of work! They look tasty though 😅.
Josh is that a plastic crimp on the bander? I am familiar with the ones you have to crimp to hold the band then cut. I am looking for a new bander thanks for the video.
no crimp my friend...the band gets pulled tight and "locks" into place around the rubber. No crimping ..everything is pre-crimped ready to go. Just ratchet and cut. I put a link in the description for ya if you'd like to get one. Better act fast...looks like I've just about sold them out on Amazon! Crazy how showing like this on the channel and it quickly sells out
Fun times. My grandfather always told me, when your banding the first thing you do is warm your hands. It minimizes kicking. I am pretty sure he was full of it. 😵💫😵💫
I personally like cutting them because you forsure get them as well as it doesn’t stunt growth.. a banded cafe will stunt and not eat and it takes along time.
But don’t take my comment the wrong way if you ain’t one to cut that is 1# of the best banding setups I’ve ever seen. I just personally don’t like how banded stunts growth. I can cut one and no more then 2 days you wouldn’t know he had even been cut.
yep...I'm not taking you the wrong way brotha....if you remove the testicle you remove the hormones...whether banding or castrating. These young bulls went right back to grazing 10 mins after being banded. Maybe look into one of these my brotha...most certainly you have to be sure you have 2 testicles in the bander...and I agree...a day old calf banded is not as good for the animal as a 6 month old bull banded
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer yeah forsure. I definitely like this bander. I remember banded years back before I started cutting them and I’ve had calf’s run out and lay down And not get up for a day. How long does it take for the ball to fall off?
10-14 days normally
If the banner was motorized, kids would be able to do it. Great product though!
