She had very bad depression. Her husband knew that. He went out to dinner and left her alone and isolated with the children. So, where is his culpability in this? She ckearly was struggling. Why didnt he organise a sitter snd take her out with him? Why did he not get her psychiatric help? Why the hell did he bring them to the other side of the world to a small place like Timaru with no support, no friends , nothing?
I abhor what happened, but he is just as culpable in this as far as I sm concerned.

Yes, I had a husband like this.
He should have stayed with her that night and comforted her.
Isolation is a narcissist tactic which backfired badly in this case.

What baffles me is her husband leaving her alone with the girls, hadn't she already threatened to kill them? He knew she was unwell mentally and then he left her on a week night to go out to dinner. So she had already been alone looking after 3 children all day by herself, mentally unwell, and then he expected her to do so again at night. Seriously? I can't fathom that behaviour. 😢

In actual fact her husband had helped her get them ready for and drop them off to school and preschool for the day and then he joined her to pick them up again and take them to the park. She had not been alone with them until it was their bedtime and he went out. All she had to do was get them to bed ffs.

If she had a history of severe depression why on earth did he go out to party an leave those three defenceless children alone with her? In my view she was suffering severe selfishness.

I’m so cross with this. Why bother with jury trials if a judge can over-ride the jury’s findings? What Marie explained was not what the jury found. As Michael said, depression or mental illness does not cause someone to murder three children! What an awful thing to insinuate about depressed people. Does Marie not accept some people have no excuse for their actions? Some people simply make bad choices. No excuse.

I’m surprised at Laws’ take on this. Lockdown also had an impact, this was mentioned in the case. She probably had inadequate zoom calls with a psychiatrist and the drugs were likely relied on too heavily. Those children would be alive today if her cries for help had been heard (she said three times she wanted to harm them). She should have been taken away to get well, for as long as it took. May those dear children rest in peace.

After listening to this interview I absolutely will say that Lauren Dickason was on prescribed medication for her diagnosed mental illness, her depression. What she did was quite usual behaviour for someone after being prescribed psychotropic drugs and she may well have killed her children to save them from suffering from the same emotional pain that she was suffering from. This can happen because while a person is taking psychotropic medication the mediating actions of the prefrontal cortex are eliminated by the medication and when a person in their intoxicated state decides to do something strange their normal mechanisms for overriding this are not available to them because of the medication that they were prescribed-often by people who are not conversant with the side effects of these drugs and who also should be tried for their culpability.

As a woman who has found herself in a totally different country, with no family or friends, and at home alone while my partner went to work, in a way I can empathise with Lauren. I wonder how much support she had from her husband. She was a woman who had had a job and a nanny and was now staying at home and looking after kids. This is no excuse for what she did of course although I have to say that at times I felt such desperation when my child constantly cried and I had no support. She's going to have to live with what she has done. The life she knew has gone. She will be paying for this madness whether in prison or not for the rest of her life.

As someone that went through the mental health system as a person that experienced an extreme psychotic episode l can relate to how as humans we're all in essense only a hearbeat away from from going down the rabbit hole.
I'm not advocating for or against the lengthy sentence because clearly what happened leading up to that horrific event with her children was a motivating factor.
Should we judge her as evil... or the act as evil.
I'm. Not advocating a more lenient sentence or that she should be forgiven however...
If you don't have forgiveness what do you have that possibly burdens your own soul when battling your own personal demoms and skeletons in.your closet.
May God Almighty grant you the strength in that hour... Amen.

I blame draconian Immigration rules about preexisting conditions. She went off her meds to immigrate and her husband left her alone with the kids no meds no nanny.
So very preventable, wish we valued immigrant medics so they can move here despite their medical issues.

She needs transitioning back into society and needs less accusations against her and more guidance. My God have mercy on her soul.
