    I had my first ever smear 6 months ago and I wasn’t nervous for the smear at all because I knew from talking to my mum and sister it was fairly quick and painless to have done. However my results showed I had a HPV positive result and I had some borderline changes in the cells in my cervix. So I would need a colposcopy, now that frightened me as I stupidly googled what other people’s experiences were and every post I read was super negative and I kept seeing ‘cancer’ everywhere. However I went for it and ended up having a biopsy, everything was quick and painless again (slightly uncomfortable) and after Christmas I was told that my cervix showed only a low grade abnormality to the level of CIN1 and I would need another smear in 12 months. Moral of the story is having a smear isn’t bad it’s protecting you by detecting any potential abnormal cells and a colposcopy and biopsy helps to prevent any further issues. Ignoring something out of fear will only make it that much more frightening.

      The US guidelines have upped the age to 21 in the years since my first, which was at 19. It’s mind boggling that it’s recommended to also go every 3 years instead of every year! I personally find it pretty uncomfortable but it’s so important and is just a few minutes of potential discomfort.

    They didn't have to check you again for three years? Here they tell you to come back after 6 months, then after a year, and then start coming every year. And also to get vaccinated before you have sex again after the procedure so you don't just go ahead and get infected again.

    The differences in the health care systems among the countries - even in Europe - never stops to amaze me. In Greece we HAVE to take a PAP test (which includes both smear and colposcopy) for the first time after we first had sex. No matter the age. Even in 18. If we haven't had sex by the age of 25 then we start doing a PAP every year no matter what. Also the HPV Vaccine is a mandatory vaccine in our system.
    Ps. Love that kind of content. Lots of love! Stay healthy! I know you go through a rough patch now in the UK.

    IT worries me a bit that in so many countries the window between the tests are so long. I live in Argentina and we do both smear tests and colposcopies every year. When you go back in, they ask you when was your last visit and if you missed one the doctors get really pressed about it. Also to get a smear test you just go to nay gynecologist and ask them to make one, it's reccomended starting on 16 and up but for sure after you turn 18.

    I have endometriosis, I'm 26 so have only had one smear but ive probably had over 30 speculum examinations in my lifetime. For me, it's incredibly uncomfortable. I am on high dosages of prescription pain killers day to day anyway so prior to my smear I made sure I dosed up on those. I also have medical related PTSD so anything medical is really triggering for me, my GP was happy to prescribe diazepam to ease the panic which I also took prior to my smear. I have a tilted womb and a tilted cervix so have to have the really long speculum for them to visualise my cervix. It's not a pleasant experience but it's not the worst thing in the world. Of you're particularly nervous or know you suffer with pain down there speak to the nurses and doctors beforehand, they are more than happy to advise and assist you in feeling more comfortable. Luckily my results were all normal xx

I found out it's uncomfortable because I have a tilted cervix, and I bleed a lot because I have cervical ectropion. I had the same thing, but here in Lithuania they do a surgery to remove all the cells, so you are not awake. There is a special dye that allows to locate the abnornal cells and doctor can remove them all while you're asleep, that makes the procedure more effective as doctors can take their time. After that I had 4 tests every 3 months and after that I have one very year. Also, the test for cervix cancer is not taken with a cotton bud, but with a metal brush, but is is not painful (to take more cells). Regular smear tests (for bacteria etc) is taken with a cotton bud.

    I get that it’s a national programme but it feels like they’re going to fail those 2.7% of women, I don’t understand why they won’t separately undertake cytology reviews for those who they know have historically had CIN without HPV.

    However, I’ve only ever had one sexual partner (my husband) and I’ve read that the risk is greatly reduced, the less partners you have (70% of cervical cancer is from the HPV virus transmitted from a partner).

      I was in the first year of girls to receive the HPV vaccine and recently had my first smear test which came back abnormal and required to go for a colposcopy. From my understanding there are lots of strains of HPV and the vaccine protects against the most common ones - but not all

    • @Hillary429
      @Hillary429 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there are many strains of HPV not covered by the vaccine and your cells can become cancerous for other reasons so I would highly recommended getting a PAP smear. Tell your doctors your concerns upfront and they should work with you to make the experience more comfortable this time around.

      I’ve had one sexual partner, been with the same man since I was 15 ( now 28) and I have just had an abnormal smear test result come back.
      Please get it done! X

      Hi Diane, please get a test. Virgins can get hpv through deep kissing and men are silent carriers of the disease and cannot be tested for it. So (God forbid) your husband had it for decades and passed it onto you. The procedure is not any worse than inserting a tampon, it’s just a few minutes of discomfort for a life time of feeling at ease.
