Honestly this is the correct answer. If you want to play Legion (1) you can play with your friends, and maybe at local tourneys. If you want to play Legion 2e, then you can play Legion 2e. Just know that Legion (1) is no longer getting updates.
100% my thoughts. Really disappointing that now the cards dont have all the information on the same side , upgrade cards have no art to tell apart at a glance (not to mention the size increase, which I get from an organization point of view, but seems more annoying for actually playing with the cards on the table), and considering they've known that they where going to increase the amounts of unit boxes you have to buy to field the bigger units its mind-boggling to me that ewoks and other recent units are so mono-pose in design. I get that they need to make more money due to the debt that they are taking on soon, but alot of these changes seem poorly thought out. Really hoping that it plays really well to make up for the downsides.
@@bonkstrum9555 So basically FFG made legion, and as a company they made Wargames, boardgames, rpgs, cardgames, etc. FFG was acquired by Asmodee, another large entity in the board game space who already owned Atomic Mass Games. FFG was then broken apart, now it just does board games and card games, since Asmodee figured they already had a miniature wargame company and a RPG company. So Atomic Mass Games had all of FFG's wargames dumped in its lap with no proper warning (as we can tell from the development of Shatterpoint, a game that AMG only could have started work on after Asmodee grabbed FFG to get the star wars licence, but before they broke up FFG). This break up of ffg lead to lots of product cancellations and delays, coincided with COVID, contributed massively to the big hits the playerbase of X-wing and Armada took, and on an unrelated note basically killed the Star Wars RPG for 3 years. This breaking up of FFG was done to make Asmodee look more attractive to The Embracer Group, which was a bunch of investors trying to make a big entertainment conglomerate to sell to the Saudis. TLDR: the Saudi's didnt buy, and after floundering around for a bit the Embracer Group is now disbanding next year, and as Asmodee is the only really functional and profitable part of the Embracer Group... its taking on the vast majority of the debt that was used to buy the many companies the Embracer Group acquired. Its not all doom and gloom for Legion, its one of thier most profitable games probably, and the Debt isn't soo overwhelming that it'll kill the company immediately (or even anytime soon if the company is well managed). If we are to engage in heavy copium we could even speculate that the extra pressure to profit from legion could be good, as it will force focus to stay on the game lol. The debt is probably going to lead to budget cuts to the sub-companies that arent doing as well, and more pressure to make money. This is probably why X-wing and Armada were officially killed last month, and is probably why they are making units bigger, as bigger units=more expensive boxes, but that's just a game theory.
Just bought SW Legion when it was on sale during Prime week at Amazon. Got it in a couple of days ago. Now I need new cards and rules! Bwahaha.... joke's on me!
No not at all. The rules in the box had already been updated multiple times, so for you, you're only going to have to learn the new rule set, so win win.
Same here. Have not opened it yet so I may return it and hope they ship a core box with the new cards and rules. I picked a bad time to get into the game I guess. Half the box is irrelevant. Need to buy new cards and print new rules.
@@chappy2780 I'm guessing you didn't pay full price for the core set and even if you didn't the core set is great value for money when you work out how much each individual unit costs on it's own. AMG don't have any plans as yet to do a new core set, they are more likely to do starter faction packs. Honestly it might not feel like it, but you're in a good starting place.
@@themaskedg33k it was on sale for $90. It just burns a bit knowing so much of what’s in there is useless. The other change that irks me is from what I can tell they over complicated stuff and made info harder to obtain without the rule book on hand. Bought it intending on playing it with my 8 year old and this will just make it harder.
one important thing about the cards is that apart from the new confusing style, is that theyre even less useful, the information is spread out over both side instead of one, yet it feels more crowded, harder to keep track of, not only that but thye didnt fix any of the problems of the old cards, aka no explanation of keywords and the cards being slightly boring, its just a straight up downgrade
I miss the keywords on the cards having the definition (sometimes) beside them. Now I will have to look through the rulebook to remind myself what each keyword means. For instance, I see that Fleet Troopers no longer have Ready (which I never used). Now they have Charge. I had to look to see what that keyword meant. There is plenty of space on the cards for the definitions.
@@Zeromus5555 You are correct. I used to play Legion more regularly when our FLGS supported the game more. Last time I played was last October. I mainly paint the figures, but I would like to get back into the game. For casual players like myself, having the definitions of the keywords on the cards really help. Saves looking them up in the Rules book.
AMG are the absolute dribbles. They can't even print an assembly guide with the miniatures, let AMG stick with shartterpoint and give legion back to FFG.
I think design is a big problem with all of AMGs products. Its very cereal box like. Like cheap comic books in the bad way. Gradients and cartoony designs, but with no real sense of great design, when you go down that route. Their stuff looks more like toys for kids, than board games for everyone.
It all feels half-baked. You eider commit and make new edition woth new logo art cards and so on... or you dont. You cant eat a cake and have a cake...
Yeah this. I do understand that a completely new version would upset the community ever more, but at least we know whats going on. Now I feel that this upcoming year is gonna be a messy one.
I think it's just a new edition but they don't want to call it that because people apparently didn't like x-wing 2nd edition. And honestly there's no definition of when something changes from 'update' to 'new edition'. It's just what they decide to call it.
They screw up everything that made legion great, bigger army size just means ppl have to buy more stuff but it'll leave a very salty taste if you end up spending even more money on stuff that looks really rotten after the change.. instead of 5 introductions towards 2.0 they should call it 5 coffin nails.
I think what you’re feeling is pretty normal. I will say as someone who played SWL for 2 years when it was first released but has moved on to other tabletop games these changes and the roadmap have made me consider getting back into SWL.
@@thewynnest Blood Bowl, AoS, and MCP. Mostly games I like to paint, and the game is fun enough for me to play. I really want to paint the new hard plastic SWL minis they have planned for 2025. I tried Shatterpoint but didn’t enjoy it although I know some that do.
This is 100% a completely different game, AMG legion looks like shit. Changes literally almost every single aspect and says it’s not a new edition. Missions and secondary’s like Warhammer, legion was loved because it was different from other fucking war games. The cards look like shit, AMG ruined legion just like Disney ruined Star Wars.
I remember when this game was first announced and it was presented with this is not 40K this is a reimagining of tabletop war gaming and that was what sold the game to me (plus its Star Wars ). It’s starting to feel it’s losing its uniqueness.
Its classic IP restriction, the developers can't expand much outside of the IP to keep the sales of the game up, so all they can do is re-brand, tweak mechanics to basically re-sell the base game again. Obsoleting old rule sets enough so not backwards capable easily. They want you to spend spend spend of course.
This is why I stopped buying games made from IPs such as Star Wars. Eventually they run out of stuff they can make and you end up with a dead game or rebranded for the 10th time.
There are somethings I like and some I dont. I think their insurance on not calling in 2nd edition is absolutely stupid because that exactly what it is and whether or not they call it 2nd edition or not has absolutely no impact on whether or not people like the rule changes they are making. That said I do like the update to objectives and scoring. I like that they are increasing points limit for standard games from 800 to 1000. 800 points always felt too limited to me and always made it feel like once you got your minimum corp and commander you'd already spent over half your points. Admittedly as someone who also plays Tryanids in 40k I might be a bit biased towards seeing a lot of minis on the table but I like the double sized corp unit personnel upgrades. The change to cover I am mixed about just how they implemented it. I think making so the unit needs to be within 3 inches to receive cover makes sense and how it should have worked all alone. However I think the way that should be decided is just based in the unit leader basically if the unit leader is within 3 inches of a piece of terrain that provides cover then the unit should be counted to be in cover rather than yaving to worry about measuring to every model and they get cover if at least half of them are behind cover. That just seems like unnecessary bloat to me. One thing I like about Legion compared to other wargames like 40K is the leader centric measurements that speeds the gameplay up significantly and this seems like a step in the opposite direction which im not a fan of. Cover being a dice roll is fine and does help smooth over the discrepancy between large and small dice pools a bit which will hopefully mean smaller units like strike teams aren't just objectively terrible options but that remains to be seen. The new card layouts I am not a fan of. I dont like that the points and upgrade slots are on the back. I didn't notice the 5 different fonts before but now I cant unsee them. The presentation of the information does seem as clean to me. The removal of reminder text makes referencing rules more tedious because I cant just look at the unit card any more. Doubling the size while removing the art from the upgrade cards makes no sense. Most importantly making these announcements and saying the changes take effect immediately more than a year before they are going to have updated card packs on shelves is completely insane IMO. I also really dislike the fact that they've released updated cards for around 60% of the units in the game but didn't commit and relase updated versions for the other 40% the fact that the new points cost list doesn't list everything is also annoying cuz it means the points costs are scattered all over the place sometimes its on the old cards, some times its in the new cards, and some times its on the cost update sheet and that sort of half assed disorganized mess is really annoying to me. Overall I think the rule changes are fine I just wish they'd call a spade a spade and say the words 2nd edition and commit to doing everything that entails the proper way rather that this half assed one foot out the door BS.
This is a very negative and uninformed opinion. 1. They clearly said that the new unit cards will be free for print-to-play just like they have done with errata in the past. This will continue like it always has. 2. You skipped the whole reason for the new design - multilinguality. 3. They changed deployment to increase agency and tactics. 4. Increasing unit trooper capacity is a way to increase individuality in list-building while both enabling the feel of 'swarm' legions and keeping the more elite normal legions' viability. 5. The rules update enable further product creation and sales without necessitating power creep, which protects your already purchased units. There are now more possibilities for new diverse yet equally powerful new units. 6. They have purposefully avoided making any of your units obsolete. And the new rules, which you yourself admit that you haven't read (before a review...), are really fun, true to reality and heightens agency. 7. It is okay to say that you think everything looks shit now. But art is subjective. Your thoughts of the design clearly color your thoughts of the update... The solution to this would be to just print and play with the old styled/themed cards which is also free to find-to-print or redesign online. The design of the cards (which you are allowed to change out yourself) is not vital to the gameplay - which you are negative against. 8. I also think several things look like shit, but I do still agree with the changes to the game, rules and the vision going forward. I'll easily just redesign, print, and play with my own cooler cards if I so wish.
Thought I made it clear in the beginning that this was a initial thoughts video. Literally minutes after I watched the entirety of the livestream for the first time. I also mentioned a longer video is coming. And you make fair points, I agree on most of them. Thanks for your input!
@@thewynnest Yes you did indeed! Which was very commendable. I myself wish nothing but to counter-inform on the rather negative outlook. Especially seeing as your videos usually are very great and your previous one on 'Legion in 2024' got such a surge viewing! I'm also glad that you took the comment so well. Now that I'm reading it again I do understand that I did not state my intentions clearly. I do think that the update is well meaning and will bring good things - and I hope to see informed and openminded discussion about it! That said we both agree that the new art wasn't to our liking, and that it is a hassle to constantly update our cards... But that tradeoff will surely be worth it against a better game! Especially when you can design and print your own cards if need be! I will be sure to watch the full-take video later on when it's ready, until then: keep up the good work 👍
@@antona5923 Ahh that’s nice of you to say. Glad you enjoyed that video! And you’re right; this video was very different in overall vibe. I’m not one to go for a negative approach often, so this is the odd one out. I do really feel for the people who just got into this game. Uncertainties like this can be daunting, and I feel (for new players) it’s really hard to understand what exactly happened and where we stand, when they just unboxed their shiny new game. That’s the people I tend to reach here on TH-cam, so that’s who I’m speaking to. A little bit more about that target audience (which is a big part of my community): most of them JUST got a core box, played a few games and are now told their objective deck is out of the game, they need a ruler that didn’t come in the box they just bought, and they need to get a conversion card pack, which won’t be available for another year. It’s just really hard to explain and 90% of the comments on this video is those people I just mentioned. Maybe not AMG’s problem, since the boxes have been out for years now, so outdated items were always in there, but I can imagine this comes as a surprise which can lead to frustration. Especially when those people stepped away from GW games to avoid these kind of practices. That said; for the established Legion Community these changes will probably feel like a step that needed to happen eventually. I feel the same. But the point about redesigning the cards and increasing upgrade card sizes is still beyond me. I’m very much looking forward to my OG Rebel sleeper cell unit card 😅 I haven’t had the chance to play the new version but heard some people talk about and loving it. So cannot wait! And will definitely share my thought in a new video after the dust has settled and I actually played the game. Thanks for your feedback and hope to see you back soon 🤘
Just quit Modiphius' Fallout Wasteland Warfare because they dropped the ball with the cards and got into SW: Legion. What the hell is going on with publishers?
I don’t know, we could all try playing a few games (or a dozen) before we decide whether the changes are good or bad. Just a thought … FWIW, folks in my local game store are cautiously optimistic, and we’re trying to focus on what we want to test and understand.
Which I already planned to do, and like I also mentioned in my video; we’re gonna have to wait and see. My initial thoughts on the branding and new card layout though, it doesn’t change. Heard some good things about the new rules from my own community as well, hopes are high!
Wow. Hated when they changed the cards in Armada to where it was on 2 sides also. If they keep with this design, I can see the secondary market booming to make cards with all the info on one side. And I would buy them.
I actually just bought a starter box because I told myself that I need to support my local game store and not do 100% 3D printing. It is stuff like this that makes it hard to be faithful to that thinking. I’m kind of fine with spending money on updates and more units as long as I can easily find them, which is my biggest issue with GW. Also I am a graphic designer that has one or two students that job shadow me every semester and most of the new font design and layouts remind me of the mistakes that I try to correct with my students lol.
Amen 🙏.. I really REALLY don’t get how the designers came up with these. And if I really try to let it slip; the cards aren’t even the worst, but that mission dashboard.. How did that ever pass an entire company, and how did it get ok’d?
@@thewynnest unfortunately I’ve had to send plenty of files to print that I totally disagree with and am not proud of. People higher up the ladder get to make graphic design choices without listening to the actual designers advice. Which probably happened. “I don’t like that Legions logo, make it bigger and bolder. Cool make it even bolder….ok, a little bolder. Nice! That is it!”
I won't judge this game until I play this new edition a few times. I do think AMG are somewhat stupid releasing all this new stuff as print to play, without giving people the option to by physical product. They have said physical cards etc will be available this time next year, so we have to play with paper till then? I and many others would buy card packs now. AMG have really dropped the ball rolling this out. Only some cards are updated, I also think we'll see different size cards, Legion on the table will look a utter mess. Different designs, sizes and bits of paper all over the place, pathetic. If anyone plays Crisis Protocol you'll be used to this, mix match card designs some real, some paper. It looks like AMG are a amature company
My idea is to just play with PDF’s/booklets that I print out like I used to do with Kill Team. The ‘old’ cards will be the collectors items in my binder. Whenever a tournament organizer tells me I have to play with the cards instead of print outs, I’ll turn around and walk away. I’m not gonna deal with New Unit Cards, Old Unit Card. Old Command cards, new command cards. Big upgrade cards, small upgrade cards. Hell no.
Thank you for this update. If you learn anything about how the new sculpts will match up with the older ones do please let us know. I have loads of imperial stuff and I would be disappointed if they don't match up with the newer sculpts on the tabletop. Cheers!
Good one ☝️.. I haven’t thought about it, but if there’s news I’ll definitely update on this channel. I really do hope they take old models into consideration. There’s no way in hell I’m going to buy myself an entirely new Rebel army.
I was about to get back into it, but now I am probably gonna focus on other games until phase 2 has unfolded. I mean this in regards to purchasing anything i might just play the old version until then or try the new one once the online recourses are updated. But designwise it is a clear downgrade
Rules wise I am ok with most of the things I've seen. And you make a good point for cover. It's just that I dont know how my Rebels are going to survive now.
@@thewynnestI play Droids and B1 are worse rebel troopers. I think you'll be surprised how well your rebels do. Your faction got a lot of nice buffs in terms of defense and the new cover system, even though it takes longer now, will be far more swingy and entertaining rather just spamming dodges or hoping you roll crits.
Fixation of branding aside, I agree. It feels like the increase in corp unit size is a cynical attempt to get established players who already have their 6 corp unit options bought and painted to buy more expansions that they erstwhile didn't need.
First off: I feel like the changes are mostly positive and I’m enjoying them I do like what you said about the codex and I believe AMG could benefit from something like it. I think another solution is having an app that is accessible offline. Sometimes LGS can have spotty internet service. The whole card thing is getting out of hand, especially if we have to wait a year for new physical ones. And who knows what will change after that? Having to tell a new player: “you know all those cards you just bought in the upgrade packs? Well all of those are not even correct”
I'm just not going to spend money on licensed (or unlicensed) games for a while. When they ultimately discontinue production having multiple editions will make it harder for the community to carry on with a legacy version.
I'm feeling the same way, I have a lot of legion and I got burned with x wing because of AMG...I can't justify purchasing more product if they end up killing this game too...I hope that doesn't end up being the case, but I still have some gaming PTSD
Damn, was just getting excited to finally break open the core box I bought years ago. Not excited about these changes though. Totally agree with your take on the design changes.
As someone who has played Warhammer 40k for 17 years I can understand where youre coming from as far even the logo changes. Of course we have gone through several, and no doubt AMG will do the same with Legion as well. I also did like the original design but this is no longer FFG and I guess AMG wanted to completely make it their own even through the logo which is a bit flashy. Funny enough Steamforge games just redesigned the Warmachine logo and theres was positive in terms of aesthetic and appeal that makes it an attractive logo. It definitely feels like they are headed more towards a Shatterpoint aesthetic, epsecially with the cards. I do wonder how long Shatterpoint will remain the same in terms of the aesthetic design even the logo
The thing is, this is the same with all war games, and if your game goes 5 years with zero rules changes and rebalancing, you're not going to enjoy the game. If you like the core game, how it came, out of the box, nothing is stopping you from still playing that game. But with years of new units being released, you gotta update, at least for people who play semi-organized or competitively.
@@nathand6467 well that wasnt my arguement. Of course the actual game itself will and should evolve overtime, but i wasnt referring to that portion of the video. Thanks for your input anyways, I wholeheartedly agree haha
Yeah I get you. And I would have been fine with a slight rebranding to make it their own. But this rebranding was done without any guidelines, any care. Atleast the 40K rebranding made the texts in the rule book much more clear and organized.
I like the change to the units since most of them needed some changes, and i also like the change to cover because finally units like droidekas, atrt, spyders ans a lot of heroes can play while having amall attack pools
Im excited about the new rules. not thrilled about not having everything on the card, but quick guide can help there. I do like the new layout and art on the cards. will miss the pictures on the upgrade cards.
They’re my buddy Rick’s. He has them on all his units and got them from Litko. He bought the 6mm thick version to match Star Wars Legions thicker bases.
Low Profile: When you would role for cover, you role one few dice than the amount of hits (not crits), and you may automatically place one block result. Example: A unit of rebel commandos are being attacked by a stormtrooper unit. The attack lands 3 hits and 1 crit result. With Low profile, the rebel commandos may role 2 white dice for the 3 hits (instead of 3 white dice for the 3 hits) and when the role is finished you take a separate white dice and make it an automatic hit. So in summary: 2 dice role for 3 hits and a third white dice is an automatic block.
I don’t mind, new rules or even a new look (I agree that the new style is not good) but what really REALLY annoys me is the fact that they changed the size of the upgrade cards. They did it with Armada, X-Wing and now Legion. Very disappointed at AMG. 👎🏼
Ya, this pisses me off too. I liked having all my upgrades in a mini American binder. Not to mention upgrades will take up more room on the table now, plus we're gonna have 2-3 more activations with list building going from 800-1000. Seems kind of rushed all of these changes. Their rules changes in 2023 weren't well liked so they only adjusted and did these changes within the past year??
I'm going to bring in the counterpoint argument... There's a lot of change, yes there are a lot of cards that will not be useful anymore, yes. Obsolescence is And inevitability of life, though it is a whole lot better to have obsolete card that need new versions printed then fully losing an entire piece of the game. The new rule set is what parked my ears to come back and give Legion a try after I stepped away from the game 4 years ago. As an old, long-time X-Wing player, I am encouraged to see that AMG is putting design effort into some of what was inherited. Yes, they are pulling a lot of parallels from MCP, but at least they are drawing from what they know and what has a track record of performance. I would much rather them build with blocks that they are familiar with, instead of introducing untested rules and mechanics
Good points! Great that you’ve returned to the game. I think this went a lot smoother than X-Wing. I think the trick is to keep what good and cut loose what’s not. I feel that they prioritized the wrong things. But that’s just my opinion ofcourse!
I don’t play Legion but played X-wing. I just hope for you all that they don’t change a bunch of things and then 6 months to a year later just say no more development. But you also paint Legion models which is what to me seems like make or breaks a game for AMG.
As someone who's never played and just decided to jump in - the new legion 2.0 as the community is calling it seems to make way more sense for how an actual battlefield works. I guess I'm confused, because the changes make sense for a battlefield and legion based on the way it plays is screaming to feel like an active warzone. The card design is questionable as an outsider looking at old and looking at new.
I worry that so much of the community, especially on reddit and the discord, are just not willing to even consider the possible effects on the playerbase. Mainly that new players might feel scorned by stuff they bought recently being not usable at the drop of a hat.
I see a lot of ‘let’s stay positive’ attitude, which is a good thing. But like you said; there’s players who JUST got the game that are totally overwhelmed and don’t know what to do now. I get the frustration.
Its disappointing to me because I literally just painted my Stormtroopers out of the core box I just purchased. I guess it wont effect me too much though since I will just be playing with my kids and wife.
Some people might disagree, but I’d wait for new starters. Possibly next year. Other wise you’ll be playing a game in a very messy state. But to you ofcourse!
That’s all we can do. Realized that after the making of this video as well. Still tho, it’s weird right; my favorite games get updated and were kinda ‘just have to deal with it’.
Do not fear. The new cover rules look good for rebels. Our flimsy infantry units degrade quickly and the new rules level the playing field between small and large dice pools. Ion weapons lost their exhaust so Bistan and the trooper ion weapon become more efficient (sorry for your Chewie AT-ST tho) Agile 1 on troopers is huge. 1000 points cap will probably make 10 activations standard, very workable and not like 40k level bloat, especially with 5 turns. I'm with you on the design and cards issue, but I got a feeling it's work in progress. I'm giving AMG the benefit of the doubt on that for now.
For the last few weeks I've been preparing to play Legion, using sets that I purchased a couple years back. These changes not only look like dog shit, but are confusing, and make me not want to play. Where can I access the rules before these changes?
Hmm hard thing to say. Two days ago I’d say HELL YES. But either way what’s been happening I think I’d wait for possible new core sets to come out. The roadmap has been revealed and no new core sets are on the horizon, so it’s a hard sell. And I hate saying this, but I cannot recommend getting into it right now. It’s too messy at the moment. It is still a great game tho, just messy.
The cards are so much better for me. I don’t have to explain to new players that the rules on the cards are reminders and not the full rules. The font is so much easier to read. Easier to glance at a card and see all the keywords. Haven’t got it to the table yet, cover rules look so much better, transport is hard to evaluate without playing. Leader changes look great as does Exemplar being rolled out wider. Love the 1000pts 5 round in principle but we will see. Biggest concern is having to get more grunts from a $ perspective.
I do like the logo and branding, but like you said, thats personal taste. I don't really understand why they made certain changes instead of first building more (completing more armies) within the way things worked. But lets hope with the roadmap things improve!
Yeah I feel that this hasn’t been thought through enough. It will take a year for the cards to arrive. So we’re kind of left in the void at the moment.
They could add a Sequel Trilogy expansion for Star Wars Legion. That might not happen, because 1. The good guy faction, the Resistance is just a weaker version of the Rebel Alliance and there's very little soldiers in the Resistance, and 2. People are not fans of the Sequel Trilogy...
Saw some Legion stuff at the store and wanted to see if it was still worth getting into. Ran across your “Is Legion worth playing in 2024?” and felt pretty sure I’d buy the starter box. Then I saw this. Hm 😬 Might check out Fallout Factions and wait to see how this edition turns out. I can’t tell you the visceral negative emotion I felt upon hearing “cover is chance based.”
Yeah, whooops. I wish I could update that video somehow, but I’ll make a 2025 version as well. Still tho, my opinion has changed a bit. I will play new Legion cause it’s just a good game. But I wished they have just rolled out a new version in one go instead of leaving us in this weird in between situation.
I havent yet, but I watched tons of Battlereports and I feel positive about the changes so far. Also in my new video (Naboo terrain) I visited Maarten and off-camera we talked a lot about the new edition. He's positive about it and that says a lot.
That’s all I personally wanted yes! And sure, maybe the rules changes. But those rule changes shouldn’t mean that the cards become obsolete after a while.
I do agree on a few aspects, on my mind I do not agree on the fact your gonna have to get new replacements cards or having conversations kits. It could get even more expensive as well, I started legion few months ago and I love how it is but now the fact that we’d needa replace majority of the cards, upgrade cards, possibly new order tokens and all variants of tokens either in new or different styles it just over all just huge change depending on how its look upon.
You are the group of people I'm talking about in the video; you just got your stuff and now this is happening. I really hope for your (and our) sake that the roadmap will clear up some things tonight.
Ultimately I’m fine with all the rules changes. I’ve been playing miniature games for 20 years now, I’m used to rules changing. That said I am not okay with the roll out. It’s clear this is a 2nd edition. So why not release a new 2nd edition starter box with new models, rules, and accessories? Why can I print cards out now for the new edition but if I buy a starter box I’m getting 1st edition rules? Imagine being a new player, buying a starter box and then being told you have to go online and print out the new cards. It feels cheap. Also what’s with AMG’s refusal to engage with the community? It feels like they refuse to acknowledge their community. You would think they would do a better job of engaging, building up hype and explaining the various changes. If they want to avoid nightmares like this, ask the community for feedback.
I just get into legion a few weeks ago and yes you are right I am already confused haha Also about the branding, absolutely agreed, the old design looks so much better, very classy indeed Now I have to get all the stuff I want before its replaced with the new branding hahah
⚠️ - larger squads - lack of playtesting - (unnecessary) changes - … Feels just like the roadmap AMG 'destroyed' X-Wing with. ☹️ Larger squads made X-Wing slow, stale und changed the meta towards slowplay. Games stoped being full of action and zoom-zoom. Playtesting was done by the community: in the first half year. Most horrible time ever!! Changes and new rules/mechanics are fine - UNLESS you just do them because you neeeeed to do something. 😒 ⚠️ As a X-Wing player I say 'beware'!
I dislike the new branding, card design and rules. I don’t think people realise how many units/keywords have been changed like infiltrate and transport just as some examples. Also a lot of original cards/upgrades just don’t exist in the new edition. Anakin has lost his original command cards, the force barrier upgrade is gone. If they would still produce unit cards in the original style so that those of us who want to play with the original ruleset that would be ideal but I think very unlikely. I’m hoping to maybe just make my own unit cards for the new units that come out- but in the original style. But really, I’m not sure how many people will want to play my way! Very frustrated with the whole progression of this. (Maybe enough feedback directed to AMH could get some things mentioned addressed?
I’m sure they’ll see this video sometime! Great idea about printing your own unit cards btw.. i was also thinking about this. The old cards are better in every single way.
Do you use Tabletop Admiral for list building? I like what they have done and with their custom card builder I may use that to convert the new unit cards to the old style.
The card stuff is neither here nor there. The argument of them going obsolete is the same for both versions. The font thing is nitpicky but I do understand. The real solution is all digital but then folk will complain about not having cards. The company want to distance themselves from FFG. I however do believe there is something distinctly "not Legion" about what I have seen. I can't put my finger on it.
The thing ‘not Legion’ about is was that it looked pretty clean in my opinion. And that’s where the nitpicky part comes in I believe hehe. The new comic style/shatterpoint/mcp is just off for Star Wars Legion.
@@thewynnest you may be correct. I am keeping my eyes peeled for upcoming stuff. See if that idea aligns . I initially didn't like it because we as wargamers inherently don't like change. Folk immediately go on the defensive and become pessimistic as soon as change is announced. The game does not fit within the aesthetic of AMG. It is incredibly FFG as most art stuff is very subdued. I play all of FFGs living card games and that is very true across the range
In an overall the game just feels plain now, many units that could be better didn't receive a proper rework ( just a few were made good, but at expense of others that were already alright). Vehicles with transport are athematic now , huge units just feels as a escheme to buy more dice/ minis from older units and being the new "meta" . Thkinking about how AMG delt all this change as a bussiness it is a mistake to simply rework the game and launch it to people as print and play ( that's due people not linking to print or not having a 3d printer and newcomers buying an unfinished game) .... In the end I will probably make my homebrew, correcting a few things from 250 version and playing with whoever agrees or at home with friends
If you can get players with your homebrew version that is totally the way to go! I have not played new legion yet so I don’t know. I hear very mixed receptions tho. I did hear the rebels became even worse, but no idea.
Well, looks like I'll continue buying up until 2.0 drops and then walking away. I don't mind though, it's good as it is and it's getting too expensive anyhoo. At least the last vestige connecting me to star wars will now finally be cut.
Yeah I’d rather have seen that happen before officially releasing a new version tho 🥴. Or at least AMG telling us this is a playtest. I printed out the new rules in a booklet at a printshop a few days ago. Apparently those are already ‘outdated’. Not cool.
I am a 'new' player in that I bought the clone starter set 2 years ago and never actually got into the game. I started playing with my wife again last month and now we got a new edition. It's all pretty confusing :')
Only just bought into this game , I’m thinking just play the current rules with couple mates I’m trying to get them into it , maybe I can just ignore this new 2.0 for the time being .
They drop Star Wars Armada (who was the best game that I ever played) and X-Wing to concentrate on Legion, Shatterpoint and MCP because those last game have a better investment-revenue ratio. Shame on them. They don't want to call it 2.0 just because of what already happened with X-Wing 2.0.
Dammit, this was my problem when I got first introduced the game, that cards could become obsolete or new changes come and you wont habe all the information on hand with your stuff. Its gonna suck if the game start dying before I had real chance to get into it
Some of the cards were already obsolete, it has always been a part of the game unfortunately.. I guess printing everything is the best option right now.
Well that's my point of view (of course) but towards those things I tend to be on the negative side. I have this thought that if I wanted a different set of rules (whatever the slightest) or different anything in boardgames or videogames, I would already be playing a different game. Well... I'm not a competitive player so all that is not exactly a concern of mine, and I'll be playing my games the way is fun to me and my friends (as I'm doing with x-wing just ignoring all the new sh*t); but it is sad to think another thing that I had so much passion may go away.
Yeah, I felt the same way about Legion; the ‘old’ version was fine to me, apart from the line of sight rules and some specific unit stats. They could have just updated the rules, without the need for entirely rebranding the game and cards.
Exactly. Tweaks....adjustments.... are natural and welcome, but holding "sacrate" the heart and soul of it. Otherwise is almost a completely different thing; and I not sure if it is a thing for me anymore.
But yet... Let's hope it's something good. We are the ones, the fans, holdings those games alive, and enjoying it after all. Let's hope it is as good, or who knows.... even better than "old Legion". We are always suckers for cool games anyway specially star wars haha
I don't get it... AMG spends a considerable amount of development time to keep the game alive and is basically providing the update for free. They even explain their rational behind the new rules which I am excited for and think it's an improvement of the game system. And now the community is on top of the fence?! "This is sh*t!!" "They destroyed legion." Come on people. The game is in a healthy state! They just commited themselves for the next 5-10 years. Let them get some sales with the new plastic boxes to further work on our beloved game. And maybe think about their efforts. I think some credit is due... The rule changes are well developed:)
Love the positive attitude, and I do believe the game is in a healthy state; this is part of development. I have faith in that the game will be good. But what I’m pointing at in the video is how they are treating the game and its assets (mostly) branding design wise. I really think they took several missteps during this rebranding process. And those missteps will mean the game will be a mess (all the printed/not printed cards) for the better part of a year. It wasn’t done right, and I think it’s ok to call them out for that. I do agree that cursing at them, damning them to hell goes a bit far, and like I said in the beginning of the video; I’m not one to make negative videos. But from what I’ve seen 75/80% of the player base is frustrated about these card upgrades specifically. And I 100% get why. Still, everyone ☝️.. Try to keep it clean and respectful!
Human nature is to resist/challenge change. I think we were blindsided by the core game changes when we've been holding out for new characters and not replacements to what we already have. I personally feel slightly better after the Road Map and I'm interested to hear details about the other game modes later today, which I feel I may lean more towards.
Your shots of your games are superb. You’re right content and the thumb nail is super negative. A lot of talk about marketing was confusing, I am a first time watcher so maybe this is a marketing channel.
That’s what I kinda announced in the disclaimer. It’s my initial thoughts and not meant to give out any structured information. A more organized one will be produced soon. Sorry you didn’t like it!
I spent a year painting two armies and a full of Tattooine board, and just recently have a handle on the original rules. The nature of these "updates" feels a bit lazy, the new art direction is weak (Shatterpoint looks like generic cartoon garbage), and getting rid of the mini card format is a terrible move. I don't care if the new rules make gold bullion and angels fall from the sky, I'll die on this mini hill of upgrade cards. Viva SW Legacy!
Yeah I see what you mean. And this video was for you guys; people who recently started playing. It sucks for me, but it really sucks for people (lots from my own community) who literally just bought the game. I'd hope they come out with something to buy soon. I don't feel like printing out all the cards.
These transitions/money grabs never work out. They are trying to get us to rebuy a bunch of stuff. These guys are garbage. Drop XWing, drop Armada and force you to buy upgrade crap and gear the game to make you buy more crap for Legion. 40K it…good job🤦🏻♂️. I stopped playing 40K long ago…still have my stuff though…to much love put into painting them.😬
It was a lot of controversy in the past month, for sure. I would have teased a new legion version and then release it whenever they could provide product for it.
Plain and simple this is now Star Wars Legion the AMG Edition.
Jup. Im really curious to see how it plays. Lets hope for the best!
We live in hope 😊
Honestly this is the correct answer. If you want to play Legion (1) you can play with your friends, and maybe at local tourneys. If you want to play Legion 2e, then you can play Legion 2e. Just know that Legion (1) is no longer getting updates.
As always, have to see how it actually plays.
@@themaskedg33kRebellions against Glactic Game Manufacturers are built on hope.
I'm new SWL. What det do they have?
@Vanret255 thanks man.
Depends on how much your local scene cares
one important thing about the cards is that apart from the new confusing style, is that theyre even less useful, the information is spread out over both side instead of one, yet it feels more crowded, harder to keep track of, not only that but thye didnt fix any of the problems of the old cards, aka no explanation of keywords and the cards being slightly boring, its just a straight up downgrade
@@StephenSpangler-e6zthis is silly. If you're actually playing legion and you don't know what Charge does you barely play.
Why would you need a keyword explanation with Legion Quick Guide?
AMG are the absolute dribbles. They can't even print an assembly guide with the miniatures, let AMG stick with shartterpoint and give legion back to FFG.
That could work yeah. Same as with X-Wing and Armada.

@@AndrewVillers They are literally the same entity.
I wish AMG would stop shoving the Marvel comic look on everything. It only worked with MCP
True. From a design standpoint it’s not working (for me).
I think design is a big problem with all of AMGs products. Its very cereal box like. Like cheap comic books in the bad way. Gradients and cartoony designs, but with no real sense of great design, when you go down that route. Their stuff looks more like toys for kids, than board games for everyone.
You and me could chill haha. Great example.
The cards reminds me on the Star Wars Unlimited Design... maybe they wanted to keep the overall design...
I likened it to old Legion branding was "Band of Brothers" and new branding is '80s "G.I. JOE" cartoon.
@@CamillusofRome but even the GI Joe cartoon done wrong haha
I'm glad someone else shares my views on the branding, logo, and card style. The pictures on the cards themselves are fine, though.
The illustrations are amazing!
I was surprised they decided to wait a full year until releasing the card packs. I figured three months.
They screw up everything that made legion great, bigger army size just means ppl have to buy more stuff but it'll leave a very salty taste if you end up spending even more money on stuff that looks really rotten after the change.. instead of 5 introductions towards 2.0 they should call it 5 coffin nails.
It doesn’t feel right. But I am very curious about the game. If it’s good, I’ll try and deal with whatever is coming next.
And bigger armys means slower play, right?
This killed X-Wing, it’s a proven concept…. 😩
Bigger games means more fun. Have you never played a huge legion battle?

This is 100% a completely different game, AMG legion looks like shit. Changes literally almost every single aspect and says it’s not a new edition. Missions and secondary’s like Warhammer, legion was loved because it was different from other fucking war games.
The cards look like shit, AMG ruined legion just like Disney ruined Star Wars.
I remember when this game was first announced and it was presented with this is not 40K this is a reimagining of tabletop war gaming and that was what sold the game to me (plus its Star Wars ). It’s starting to feel it’s losing its uniqueness.
Well, like X-wing and Armada they will quit this game in 2 years anyway.
@@Zanollo5 That is sure what it feels like...as I went through the x wing roller coaster, not legion too
Its classic IP restriction, the developers can't expand much outside of the IP to keep the sales of the game up, so all they can do is re-brand, tweak mechanics to basically re-sell the base game again. Obsoleting old rule sets enough so not backwards capable easily. They want you to spend spend spend of course.
This is why I stopped buying games made from IPs such as Star Wars. Eventually they run out of stuff they can make and you end up with a dead game or rebranded for the 10th time.
GW has been remaking the same space marines since the 80’s…
Welcome to warhamm...err Star Wars... :) old new stuff :)
😅
I'm pretty sure it can't be that bad ;)
Agree with you on these points. Thanks for your elaborate answer! 🙏
I’m very much looking forward to my OG Rebel sleeper cell unit card 😅
I haven’t had the chance to play the new version but heard some people talk about and loving it. So cannot wait! And will definitely share my thought in a new video after the dust has settled and I actually played the game.
Thanks for your feedback and hope to see you back soon 🤘

I don’t know, we could all try playing a few games (or a dozen) before we decide whether the changes are good or bad. Just a thought …
FWIW, folks in my local game store are cautiously optimistic, and we’re trying to focus on what we want to test and understand.
Which I already planned to do, and like I also mentioned in my video; we’re gonna have to wait and see. My initial thoughts on the branding and new card layout though, it doesn’t change.
Heard some good things about the new rules from my own community as well, hopes are high!
The amount of troops you could have on the field actually feels like a real army. ❤
True! Wasn’t a fan of it at first, but I’m growing to love full scale army games more and more 🤘
Wow. Hated when they changed the cards in Armada to where it was on 2 sides also. If they keep with this design, I can see the secondary market booming to make cards with all the info on one side. And I would buy them.
And I would provide them. I’d LOVE to design 2.0 cards.
As a graphic designer, I can absolutely say that the new logo as serious hierarchy problems.
Yeah it’s not right.

I’m thinking about waiting it out as well. But I’ll definitely try out some games.
Love the changes, especially the cover change. The old system made shooting feel pointless in many situations
That’s a pretty smart take from that. I mean, I have tons of models but struggle with building a list for this new edition.
First off: I feel like the changes are mostly positive and I’m enjoying them
I do like what you said about the codex and I believe AMG could benefit from something like it.
Wish I could do the same, but I know I won’t 😅
It's ok. You don't have to play the new rules. Just keep playing the current rules. Keep all your cards. AMG cant take that away from you.
Absolutely right. I will convert to new rules tho, as my player group is going to. And I’m interested in new rules! Just not in new cards.
Damn, was just getting excited to finally break open the core box I bought years ago. Not excited about these changes though. Totally agree with your take on the design changes.
We will be fine, but It would be nice to have a game that works straight out of the box. Let's hope they announce it in the livestream in an hour!
@@thewynnest cant argue with that. Im sure theyll change it up agian next time around if theres enough complaint over it
I like the change to the units since most of them needed some changes, and i also like the change to cover because finally units like droidekas, atrt, spyders ans a lot of heroes can play while having amall attack pools
Yeah some stuff definitely needed a refresh. But I’d rather have had these changes without the need to ditch all my cards.
Im excited about the new rules. not thrilled about not having everything on the card, but quick guide can help there. I do like the new layout and art on the cards. will miss the pictures on the upgrade cards.
Glad you like it! I still don’t 😆.. But I’m curious about how New Legion plays.
Acrylic bases on AT-ST? Nice. Where did you get these?
They’re my buddy Rick’s. He has them on all his units and got them from Litko. He bought the 6mm thick version to match Star Wars Legions thicker bases.
AMG is to Star Wars games as Disney is to Star Wars media. Trash, all garbage.
Low Profile:
When you would role for cover, you role one few dice than the amount of hits (not crits), and you may automatically place one block result.
So in summary: 2 dice role for 3 hits and a third white dice is an automatic block.
ahaaa.. That makes sense. Still think that Low Profile should be in across the Rebel army tho. I feel that Rebels are gonna have a bad time.
The upgrade card size got me too. I have the binder pages that hold the Unit and upgrade cards together nicely.
Honestly its either a revamp or they kill the game. I'm happy about the revamp !!!!
I'm still playing the old way and you can't change my mind.
Yeah totally up to you ofcourse!
All your comments about branding are spot on, mate.
Thank you. It’s just an opinion but one that a lot of people will feel the same about I think.
I have yet to play it so can’t comment on that. I think I do like the new cover rules tho!
@@thewynnest Yes new cover rules and new armor rules as they are more robust and balanced than the old rules.
Nahh then you can just play the core set rules even. I had a lot of fun with that core set for a long time!
Your models can still be used with the new rules.
my guess is that the next edition with stater set will properly announced next year in time for Gen con 2025
I agree. I’m waiting for that before I get into republic I think.
I almost bought the clone wars starter box yesterday. I would really like to get in to this game but should I wait?
Some people might disagree, but I’d wait for new starters. Possibly next year. Other wise you’ll be playing a game in a very messy state. But to you ofcourse!
I dont mind the logo change that much but those cards oof. Ill keep an open mind for the changes and hope for the best.
That’s all we can do. Realized that after the making of this video as well. Still tho, it’s weird right; my favorite games get updated and were kinda ‘just have to deal with it’.
How can we tell them no or please stop? :/
We can’t. Or just stop playing the game. Oh well, we’ll see
The game has not changed in six years. It has to change.
Do not fear. The new cover rules look good for rebels. Our flimsy infantry units degrade quickly and the new rules level the playing field between small and large dice pools.
Ion weapons lost their exhaust so Bistan and the trooper ion weapon become more efficient (sorry for your Chewie AT-ST tho)
Agile 1 on troopers is huge.
1000 points cap will probably make 10 activations standard, very workable and not like 40k level bloat, especially with 5 turns.
I'm with you on the design and cards issue, but I got a feeling it's work in progress. I'm giving AMG the benefit of the doubt on that for now.
Benefit of the doubt is what X-Wing players….
Ah, nevermind!
😭😭😭
For the last few weeks I've been preparing to play Legion, using sets that I purchased a couple years back.
These changes not only look like dog shit, but are confusing, and make me not want to play.
Where can I access the rules before these changes?
Good one… Aren’t they on the AMG website anymore? If they aren’t, I’ll provide them on my discord soon. Feel free to join!
As someone who's been toying with playing legion for a while, would u say it's a good time to jump in? Also what happened to may the 4th deals
@@thewynnest Sounds man thanks for the advice ill defos wait it out a bit and see what happens :)
Glad you like it! There’s good things, for sure. I just think they could have skipped a lot of the new things and just update the game.
Played first game yesterday and I think most of the changes are good. Give it a go!
Nice! Yes I have printed my stuff and a game planned for this week 🔥
I'm happy with with the previous version, is it okay to stick to it? I'm a casual player, not into tournaments at all. I hope I can find opponents.
It’s probably better to move on if you want to play more people. If you’re playing with one buddy you could stick with this. Play what you want!
New key words totally throws it off, if they don’t have a conversion kit I’d be afraid they would lose a good amount of players
It would have made more sense to tease this new version this year, and release it, with cards next year. Kinda left in a void now.
This is why I like asoiaf when cards get updated or changed its all put on the official free app
Paid app? Or is it free? The Warhammer app was locking content behind the codex you had to buy.
@@thewynnest free app
@@thewynnest The ASOIAF army builder app is 100% free and displays full updated unit and ability cards.
How are you feeling about the game now with (I assume) some games under the belt?
I havent yet, but I watched tons of Battlereports and I feel positive about the changes so far. Also in my new video (Naboo terrain) I visited Maarten and off-camera we talked a lot about the new edition. He's positive about it and that says a lot.
all they need to do is bring more units and keep supplies in local stores in stock.
@@thewynnest I agree hopefully 🤞🏼but least you can still play the original legion like I would.
I just get into legion a few weeks ago and yes you are right I am already confused haha
Also about the branding, absolutely agreed, the old design looks so much better, very classy indeed
Now I have to get all the stuff I want before its replaced with the new branding hahah
Yeah I wouldn’t go chasing old stuff now. But I get what you mean. This is hella confusing for lots of people.
@@thewynnest I dont think I will do that anyways haha, thats too pricey. I hope the shop I go to keeps the old boxes for a while tho
⚠️
- larger squads
- lack of playtesting
- (unnecessary) changes
- …
Feels just like the roadmap AMG 'destroyed' X-Wing with.
☹️
Larger squads made X-Wing slow, stale und changed the meta towards slowplay. Games stoped being full of action and zoom-zoom.
Playtesting was done by the community: in the first half year. Most horrible time ever!!
Changes and new rules/mechanics are fine - UNLESS you just do them because you neeeeed to do something. 😒
⚠️
As a X-Wing player I say 'beware'!
I think a part of the community is on edge because of this. I just hope the new rules are ok.
Ngl I think we could just play the old version with friends if it isn't great
Same.
Make Your own cards, period.
If they want to sell something, it better be worth it.
@@thewynnest Yup, hear the same for rebels, specially to veterans, Echo base BF, at-rts and heavy units
Well, looks like I'll continue buying up until 2.0 drops and then walking away. I don't mind though, it's good as it is and it's getting too expensive anyhoo. At least the last vestige connecting me to star wars will now finally be cut.
Sounds like a sad ending. But I get it.
This is the playtesting
Yeah I’d rather have seen that happen before officially releasing a new version tho 🥴. Or at least AMG telling us this is a playtest.
I printed out the new rules in a booklet at a printshop a few days ago. Apparently those are already ‘outdated’. Not cool.
I am a 'new' player in that I bought the clone starter set 2 years ago and never actually got into the game. I started playing with my wife again last month and now we got a new edition. It's all pretty confusing :')
I can imagine.. Just print out the new rules and try to go with that.
I see this game going the way of X-Wing soon
AMG make good game challenge (impossible)
Well at least Thrawn is getting a mini right?
RIGHT! And I’m super excited about the Sleeper Cell unit.
Only just bought into this game , I’m thinking just play the current rules with couple mates I’m trying to get them into it , maybe I can just ignore this new 2.0 for the time being .
That’s always possible! The newer units come out with the ‘old’ cards anyways. Don’t know how the balance will be on those tho.
The cohesion of the cards bother me, but I am colour blind and the new cards I actually read much easier. I will have to try this out.
Oh that’s great! I can imagine with the thin fonts and low contrast of the ‘old’ cards you’d have problems with them.
That's interesting to hear, I'm all for accessibility and if that was a major consideration to the design aspects AMG should have lead with that.
We want this to last another 5-10 years - amg
First time? - xwing players
😅
You going to look at doing some leagion battle reports I'll be all over that 😊
Definitely happening within the next few months!
Mechenicly I love the changes and buffs. But the astetics of the cards is indeed sooooo bad.
Same! I feel the new rules seem pretty good. It’s just the aesthetic I don’t like.
It is version 2.0. They are just too afraid to say it because they already destroyed one game that way.
True. Asmodee probably put a stop to the idea of a calling it a new 2.0 version.
Well looks like Legion has just become a bunch of models for me... Just like X-wing...
I'm interested to see what gets announced tomorrow night about the other game modes.
"This is sh*t!!" "They destroyed legion."
Come on people.
I personally feel slightly better after the Road Map and I'm interested to hear details about the other game modes later today, which I feel I may lean more towards.
the amount of empty space on the cards is massive and useless… it goes against graphic design 101.
After the whole AMG 'worst kept secret' ... No longer supporting X-Wing or Armada ... I just don't trust AMG with this IP ...
We’re going to have to see. Very curious about the new rules tho!
Your shots of your games are superb. You’re right content and the thumb nail is super negative. A lot of talk about marketing was confusing, I am a first time watcher so maybe this is a marketing channel.
It’s about minis, but I’m in marketing. So I take branding, fonts and logo serious. Maybe a little bit too serious 🧐
Is this not the reason x-wing died. Also shatterpoint splitting the target audience was dumb.
Kindaaa. But X-Wing had a lot more problems. I think Legion will be ok.
This video feels more like a tantrum than information, not my cup of tea
I dont know about how to play it( i have never played star wars legion or any other wargame) but I am excited for the new model for the minifigs
The minis are great! And lots of fun to paint 😉
They killed X wing and Armada, legion will not survive.
Let’s hope it’s survive tho!
