This looks like such down to earth, family restaurant type food. I'm great with fancy presentation and expensive ingredients, but a hearty satisfying meal like one of these is definitely a treat too.

You'll love it. If you get a chance to return then I'd highly recommend visiting in late November. The fall leaves are gorgeous. I wan't to return one day for cherry blossom season.

Udon is my favorite Japanese noodle. Mikey, travel to Kagawa prefecture, the udon capital of Japan to enjoy its famous Sanuki udon.

When you are eating udon, I was thinking about making udon for lunch, and when you are eating yakisoba I started thinking about making yakisoba for lunch. LOL what should I eat?😅
I love bento boxes. We became addicted to them in the 1980s watching "Shogun", an elaborate samurai-themed TV series starring Richard Chamberlain.
Our wealthy landlord, a retired Mitsubishi engineer who'd lived in Japan for years, made artsy bento boxes every night for favorite tenants he invited to watch the elaborate drama on his then-rare bigscreen color TV. Back in the day, that was a major treat.

I learned to make Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima. The style is a little different than in Kyoto but both are amazing!!

There’s a good chicken tempura udon place in Kagawa prefecture. Its in Shikoku so it might be a bit far but Kagawa prefecture is the most famous udon prefecture in Japan and also has the best udon

I really enjoyed Kyoto as well.
It's smaller and traditional and peaceful compared to Osaka or Tokyo.
Are all trains in Japan those bullet train type trains or is that only long distance? I think that's so cool either way. I'd love to travel more by train in the US, but in my opinion it's pretty expensive for not that fast and not that nice. Could you say what the price of a train ticket is in Japan vs the US? Like is it comparative, more or less expensive? I'm curious. I don't know how the Japanese people view their trains, but I know they were revered at one time in the US because this country wouldn't be what it is without them, even if they're not as crucial or respected as they used to be
It's high. Especially for bullet trains. The cost is prohibitive enough to keep Japanese people from traveling more.
