this has got to be my absolute favorite format of pokemon gameplay content I've ever seen. The optimizations to be able to beat the E4 & Blue with such a massive level disadvantage is basically always my goal in pokemon games. I feel like this should be more popular than nuzlocking lmao. Rather than "can you beat pokemon games without dying" it's "how low of a level team can you actually beat pokemon with" but like, without weird cheese strats like toxic stalling or whatever.
Great video. After playing the games as an adult and then going on to play numerous romhacks of gen 1 running from low impact ones that include all mons to high impact ones that have a lot of homebrew and tinkering, I've come to understand the gameplay of gen 1 as more dragonquest than pokemon, if you feel me. Pokemon bills itself as a game about traveling, catching pokemon, and building a team, but it's so clear that the games are actually linear hero adventure stories. You're meant to catch, use, and bench your Pokemon as you progress, and adapt to a variety of unique challenges related to type interactions. Players often don't acknowledge it, but there are definitely boss pokemon and boss types explicitly put into the game to challenge you. Ghost, dragon, and psychic. Gengar, Dragonite, Alakazam. The devs knew that Alakazam was busted, which is why he is behind a trade, and given a first stage that literally does nothing. Gengar is poison because he's just too powerful as a pure ghost. And the dragon type is pretty self explanatory, they learn all the good moves, get dragon rage, and resist a lot of common stuff.
I picked Charmander as my starter when I was 8 because I liked fire... That nostalgia still makes it so hard for me to pick Squirtle or Bulbasaur when I start a new game today.
Come for the quality content, stay for the obscure references. I chuckle every time I see the perfection of “pupa tier clique.” Idk how the algorithm suggested your Pokémon videos before your Fromsoft ones, but I’m enjoying the ride either way.
there are so many "playing x game as intended" videos on youtube but it really just ends up being "i followed a strategy guide to the letter" and i really like this video because it genuinely analyses the design of the game
Thank you for saying that! I got really fascinated by Dark Souls which never tells you where to go but offers tiny little hints based on where they give you access to certain items. It got me really fascinated on why game devs make the seemingly small decisions they do--nothing is an accident, and it can lead to discovering cool new secrets
I can’t remember off the top of my head but I do think there is the extra potion on the tree in the first city on the cuttable tree beside the man who won’t let you pass before you deliver parcel to Oak. Absolutely awesome I’ve found another YTer on the grind! Keep up the great work man!
Loved the vid as always Mothy. The team is wild. Never would have expected almost any of the picks. One side note, i believe at some point in the video you claim nidoqueen, a ground type, resists fire. While it's possible I don't have gen 1 type chart quite remembered, I'm pretty sure fire is neutral against ground. That said, really loved all the info provided, especially all the trades, as I largely had no clue how to take care of most of them, especially Lola
I was introduced to your channel by your Pokemon videos and I gotta say, I love your style of gameplay! I also love that you included chapters in the video (with funny names to boot) so I can refer back as I try out the team for myself. I saw you have a Stardew video as well, so my mom is gonna love that one.
27:40 Bruh it's pretty heavily implied his Raticate died 28:56 That Escape Rope is not a mistake. The Poke Doll trick is extremely specialized knowledge that wasn't really widespread until 2005, well over 10 years after the game was released. The Escape Rope is there so that, if you naturally explore the Tower and encounter the ghost, you can just leave instead of having to backtrack until you get the Silph Scope.
Giving you the love Jimothy, my favourite TH-camr by far and im always excited for what’s next! Pokemon was a great idea, my favourite is the Diamond/Pearl era so if I ever see that ill be a happy boy 😁❤️ keep it up mate
Oh I had to watch this right away! Yellow might be fun as a quick reexamination but i would be more interested in either gen 2, or see how the route & theory crafting changes for the remake Leaf Green!
These are fun videos. I'll admit im not a very serious gamer sometimes and don't put nearly this much thought into team building. It seems to work well though
Thank you for enjoying! There's so much content on silly (sometimes modded) ways to play the games, this series was born from wondering "what does it look like to play perfectly normal, straight down the middle of what the game designers had in mind?" And these teams are all the best I can manage to achieve that!
Love the video, and I want to start off by saying I understand what you're trying to do. That said, I almost think a more appropriate name for this video/series would be "playing X as unintentionally intended". Personally, I think you're ascribing a ton of intention where there wasn't any. The reality is, there just wasn't a ton of intentionality behind game design decisions in the early days, it was more about flavor and world building. Porygon didn't serve any "purpose" besides just being a nod to those seemingly unobtainable prizes at arcades. Scyther and Pinser were just cool dudes, didn't matter if they couldn't learn a bug move. Tri-Attack was a move they made, and then it just so happens to work best on Cloyster. If there was an intended playthrough, it was supposed to be one of organic discovery. Which, in my mind, explains why it's so hard to parse out the "intended" gym order, or rather, the lack thereof. The middle section of the game feels disconnected because most first time players were going to miss an item here or there, so the game allows you to progress without 100% completion. Didn't find the bike? Well, you can get to Fuchsia. Found your into Saffron before getting the pokeflute? Well then, here's your next gym. Again, I understand what you're doing, and I love it! But I think ultimately these breadcrumbs you're finding are more random than it first appears.
This video was amazing!! I don't believe a 10 to 15 year old will have that knowledge of team composition in rby even with multiple playthroughs when these games were released because much of that information was scarce at that time, even if you got your hands on a certified strategy guide. I loved every minute of this though!! I think most fans who played rby when they released wanted to mimic the anime as close as possible (the sole reason of pokemon yellow being released) not to play pokemon how game freak hoped players would play through, with its obscure team composition hints that many of us western fans clearly ignored, or didn't understand just for the sake of trying to mimic the anime, playing with our favorite pokemon at that time, or solely catching mewtwo to smash our friends in link cable battles.

I thought it was a jimothy cool alt channel when I clicked it haha. Good video tho
Amazing video! I love how you look at video games
This was brilliant. The parasect strategy in particular astounded me.
I picked Charmander as my starter when I was 8 because I liked fire... That nostalgia still makes it so hard for me to pick Squirtle or Bulbasaur when I start a new game today.
I get that. I have been a contrarian my whole life even as a kid, so I avoided Charmander since all the other boys were all taking it
A new ji_mothy video?!!?!?! About my FAVORITE THING? Yeeeessss something interesting to grind OSRS mining to
Love your video, super informative and not at all boring to watch! Keep up the good work ❤
Well done and thank you for making this vid
So excellent. The algorithim would be wise to acknowledge you for the best TH-camr you are.
🫡 trying!
Fantastic video!!! Would love to see a sequel.
I'm not even a Pokemon fan, but I was captivated for a good seventy minutes, another banger Mr. Mothy.
I, for one, acknowledge the ridiculous research and effort this type of video takes. Hope you're having fun ^.^ keep it up, you
This was awesome! Love your vids!
This was super cool! Although TBH I think you're intended to keep your starter around til the end. ;) Great reasoning and final team comp!
Love the branching out. Another banger brother
Thanks for another fun video. 1hr + vids make me happy~
Definitely interested in a "Yellow as Intended" video. Great work on this one!
Same.
Tries to beat brock with pidgeot level 9 n pikachu
I was introduced to your channel by your Pokemon videos and I gotta say, I love your style of gameplay! I also love that you included chapters in the video (with funny names to boot) so I can refer back as I try out the team for myself. I saw you have a Stardew video as well, so my mom is gonna love that one.
Welcome! And thanks for noticing the chapters, didn't know if those were helpful but I'll keep it up
Praise be to the mighty algorithm.
Amazing video! I love this series!
The PC saying "What?" around 42:42 is such a mood, considering the back-to-back blasphemous statements uttered previously lol
23:04 As a lifelong Bulbasaur fan, I love your Charmander slander ❤️
hour long ji_mothy video? easy click
27:40 Bruh it's pretty heavily implied his Raticate died
28:56 That Escape Rope is not a mistake.
I think the escape rope next to the ghost pretty heavily implies a skip was not intended
Also, later Kanto games didn't allow for the Poké Doll skip.
This series soothes the inner obsessive. I love them, even for games I haven't played.
Nice video, bro! Keep it up!
great stuff! hearing Raines made me do a double take lol glad my-twin helped out! good names all around lol
Raines was OP! But Rival gets a Raines in yellow 🤫
There is ALWAYS a need for more videos of this exact content type.
Amazing work , congratulations!
Mothy: "Is YOUR sub missin?"
Me: "No? He's upstairs, taking a nap. OH. Oh, yeah, I'm subscribed."
Love your work man!
The fact the algorithm still hasn't picked your channel up for mass suggestion is absolutely wild to me. Dear Jimothy, you da man. Keep it up. :)
"...What Porygon's purpose is in life."
To be a scapeGogoat.
Love your work Jimjam
Are you my ex
TH-cam Pantheon, pls shower mothy with subs and money. genuinely some of the most entertaining, best content ive watched on this site in a while
@54:52 "So anyways, I started blasting!"
another ji_mothy classic
GSC confirms the Cycling Road path is canon. That Snorlax is gone, while the one blocking the Coastal Road is still there
(This is also why the rods are in the order they are. Good Rod is first if you take that route and the other one is hidden out of the way)
Giving you the love Jimothy, my favourite TH-camr by far and im always excited for what’s next! Pokemon was a great idea, my favourite is the Diamond/Pearl era so if I ever see that ill be a happy boy 😁❤️ keep it up mate
Ty Joe! I only recently got to play those on the new switch versions, I have a lot to learn but I'll try!
loved the vid man, thank you for all the effort you put into these 🫶
Oh I had to watch this right away! Yellow might be fun as a quick reexamination but i would be more interested in either gen 2, or see how the route & theory crafting changes for the remake Leaf Green!
The submission joke made me subscribe lol
These are fun videos. I'll admit im not a very serious gamer sometimes and don't put nearly this much thought into team building. It seems to work well though
Thank you for enjoying! There's so much content on silly (sometimes modded) ways to play the games, this series was born from wondering "what does it look like to play perfectly normal, straight down the middle of what the game designers had in mind?" And these teams are all the best I can manage to achieve that!
commenting for the algorithm.
I also greatly enjoyed the video, brought back some childhood memories of pokemon on my GBC
14:27 isn't there a lady on the ship that can heal you? Oh well, great vid ji_mothy!
Is there?? I thought so but then couldn't find her and I felt crazy and convinced myself that was in yellow or gen 2
@ji_mothy just looked up the gamefaqs guide and you were correct, she is not there in original red and blue.
Liked the idea and execution of this video,
Becoming a series, cool.
