Pokemon Yellow version released on the Gameboy in the 90s as an enhanced version of the original Pokemon Red and Blue games. Since today is Pokemon day and Pokemon's 25th anniversary, I thought it would be a perfect time to hammer away at a generation 1 Pokemon game!

The guy who made the guide most likely just used a Charizard for all the run, making it overleveled and this is why fire type attacks are so good agains Giovanni and Lorelei
Can you blame anyone for maining Charizard in Yellow? Game Freak actually acknowledged that it could fly this time.

Technically not since charizardnis part flying, thus being immune to earthquake but maybe he has rock coverage idk

Why not? The second half of the game is where the Charmander line really shines, Erika is burnt to a crisp and then Koga has his Bugs which also get burned up, Dig makes it even more dangerous as it can take out Team Rocket and Dig also has advantages in Blaine's Gym. But I almost never teach it to Charmander since Sandshrew needs it to be effective and others need it worse than Charmander.Also Fly really adds to its versatility and it can help in the Elite Four fights, except Lorelei. But by then, Charizard is mostly my Flyer. You have other Pokemon that compliment it well.

@@tristankeightley8214 I was thinking the same thing but it's most likely desensitization. We all know them as battles and what they are as battles. Combat is just another similar word but because it's not associated with Pokemon it makes it feel more impactful.
I just love the old gen 1 and 2 artwork for pokemon. The color and everything is so iconic and nostalgic
Facts after those 2 gens I stopped playing than got interested in the newer references bit nothing can beat those two tho
I love the fact that with every nintended video that goes by, the guide reference vocabulary gets bigger. Type trump, hammer, away and lay down the law, all making triumphant returns here.

Even though my mom didn't grow up with Pokémon because it didn't exist yet when she was a kid she still missed chubby Pikachu because her children watched the first seasons of the Pokémon anime

If you use a potion on pikachu, he likes you more. This works even when pikachu has full health. Easy way to get bulbasaur
Any medicine works other than pp up, full heal, (max) revive, (max) ether, and (max) elixer
this is true, but back when i first played pokemon yellow when they first came out as a kid i didnt know that trick was a viable strategy.

I believe his nido was in front of party n not pika.....thus the check is on his leading poke boii not pika specifically...scrubs. Learn to hammer
I absolutely LOVE how the "hammering away"/"zig when he zags"/"type-trumping" lines are consistently being carried on.
I find it really wholesome how you keep using "hammer away" as a citation to that wonderful guy who wrote some of the guides from the early videos in the series; how you initially made light of the wording but then came to embrace it when you read he passed away.. And now you bring forth his legacy; it's a small thing, but it always puts a smile on my face.

The Prima guide of Yellow also had a ton of mistakes, like saying you shouldn't use Pikachu against Misty because he lost to Starmie in the anime, when in the actual episode Pikachu refused to fight his friend. Also I think they forgot some moves and made a few smaller errors.
The game is based on the anime, so I guess they went a little too far there.

@@siru47 Yeah, Yellow was essentially meant to be a game version of the anime, with some tweaks to allow you to beat the champion instead of waiting 25 or so years to do it in Alola.

Apparently the way to beat the game as Nintended is to grab a Dugtrio and never stop using it.
Ironically that's exactly what I did. Dugtrio coming in at level 30 so early on is amazing

First game I ever got was Pokémon yellow from my father when I was 4, I’m 22 now and still play the cartridge. He passed away recently but I still think of him every time I see anything Pokémon and it keeps me going.

I used to lvl up Pikachu to 20 aswell to learn slam. Just made the rest of the game so much easier.

The Pokémon tower Channelers all are possessed, at least that’s what I thought as a kid playing through- they all seem to wake up from their kekeke ways after you beat them, and the one next to the healing spot does explain that she created it since she wasn’t kekeke-ing anymore
They definitely are. "What happened?" "Something fell out" "The spirit is gone now". I didn't talk to them after the battles so I don't know if they have more to say aside from their 'defeated' lines.
God, there’s just nothing else out there that gives me nostalgia quite like Sugimori’s art does

@Tauson Kahl I played Pokémon Yellow! Since it’s just a rehash of Pokémon Red/Blue/Green, GameFreak needed a new gimmick. I loved following Pikachu and it can even show facial expressions when you talk to him (no genders in Gen 1 and that tail makes it male haha).

True, but as soon as you put pikachu in the PC, or wanted a Raichu; following pokemon was removed from the game. HeartGold and Soulsilver is what people referred to when they wanted following pokemon for the games following, because every pokemon could follow you.

A tip for getting that Bulbasaur as soon as possible: I remember playing this as a kid, and knowing that if your Pikachu is on full health, you can spam potions on it without using them up, but it still increases your friendship 😉

Remember that Fire doesn't actually resist Ice in Gen I, so Charizard gets nuked by Ice moves, as seen. Also, mad props for actually keeping Pikachu the entire run. Most people I know dump it for Jolteon.
Which I'll never understand because you can teach Pikachu surf using Pokemon stadium. Surfing Pikachu is far more useful than regular Jolteon. Mainly because it can destroy some ground types using it.

I beat pokemon Y again the other day and noticed there is an "Official Kalos Region Guidebook" advertised in the page for the torchic. Seems they may have not had a third party do gen 6 like they did in some of the other later gens, could be an interesting one to do since you practically curb stomp the entire region anyway.
Oh! I own the X/Y guidebook and all the credit I can see on it says "The Pokemon Company International", so yeah looks like that one's not a third party guide!
I mean there’s always no exp share runs which make it admittedly annoying at times with level spikes but it’s better than a never ending victory parade

Was I the only one that caught a caterpie and evolved it to a butterfree so that I could beat Brock with psychic?

I did that my first run on pokemon read before understood type advantages
I did the same. While Mankey's low kick and Nidoran's double kick were the usual popular options to defeat Brock, I've always preferred Butterfree. It both evolves and learns Confusion at level 10 which is amazing that early in the game. Butterfree also learns various status effect moves soon after which help with catching other Pokemon. Ash also had a Butterfree in the anime which is another reason why I always go with it during my Yellow version playthroughs. It's a really good early to mid-game Pokemon to have in your party.

I have to say the sprites from the legendary bird pokemon are looking great, I haven't seen them in years and they really aged well.

I remember playing this game before learning english properly. couldn't find out how to get past that guy who teaches you how to catch pokemon so i endlessly wandered around till I accidentally discovered it. pikachu was strong enough to one shot brock with slam by that time
Dang. Pokémon Yellow was the first Pokémon game I ever played but I haven’t played it since 1998. This was some excellent nostalgia.
The level jumps in the Yellow gyms compared to Red and Blue are crazy. Great video!

Iirc FireRed Nintended.
It's from Playing FireRed versiom as intended. When read originally, the author who wrote that book said "hammer away at gym leader" at 4 of the 8 gyms, so the phrase was set up... Then PaPaSea realized that the author has died about two years ago from now, so PaPaSea kept the phrase as honor to him. Great!
I think you're already catching onto this, but my favorite bits are the funny/interesting things in the guide. Since we can't read the guide ourselves, it definitely helps the video of you can mention as many funny things that are in the guide as possible.
I remember when pokemon Yellow came out (I'm old) and there was a time that all the red and blue guides had to focus on yellow or they just wouldn't sell. The anime held a lot of sway back then, and the hype about being able to play "Ash's" story was immense. There were so many yellow guides back then and a lot of them mentioned caterpie for Brock, given that butterfree learns confusion on evolving.
The guide had an X-Files reference lol. That's amusing.

Right? He called Mt. Moon "Dark Cave" every time, and even called Rock Tunnel "Dark Tunnel". Dude used TM14(Blizzard) on Articuno - it learns Blizzard at lvl 51 and you catch it at lvl 50!!! lmao

I always tried to evolve the starter pikachu using a thunderstone and then upset that it failed
I still remember trading my Pikachu to a friend's game so that he could give it a Thunderstone. Then when he traded it back to me as a Raichu I suddenly missed the novelty of it following me around. :(
I had already raised a Raichu when I played through Red version, and I liked Ash's Pikachu from the anime and Pikachus in general, so I just kept my little buddy and overleveled him as my main lol He was lvl 100 by the time I faced the Elite Four.

This was a really fun/nostalgic watch. Granted I started with Crystal, I quickly collected the first gen and fell in love with Yellow for the anime similarities and, well, friggen Pikachu following me around. Eventually grabbed the guide for it off eBay and spent ages just reading over it and enjoying the art. Thanks for the hard work that went into this, appreciate ya my dude!

It's so wild (and awesome) to see you doing this guide, I probably read the thing to the point of memorization as a kid. And yeah, even back then I thought it was weird how they never told you the rival's team for Red and Blue xD
Also, the crazy-high levels of snark, pop culture reference and irreverent humor were all over the place in gaming magazines and guides in the 90s. I never thought anything of it back then, but looking back, it's so weird to see X-Files and Psychic Friends Network mentioned in a Pokemon guide

When I was a kid, I thought Fire type should be strong against Poison, because some of these Pokémon were gases (Gastly, Koffing) and gas is highly flammable . At least it had "some" sense.

Yellow version till this day has been my all time favorite game. It reminds me of the Kanto episodes of the show on tv and it’s done so closely to the show. Pikachu was my favorite Pokémon ever, so to get him in the beginning was awesome. I always named my player Ash and Oak’s grandson Gary (cause of the show). I literally still have this game and the limited edition Yellow version Game Boy Color that goes with it. I loved that you can literally get all the starters in this game like in the anime. Plus fighting Jessie and James was fun. I’m 32 and from time to time i always go back and play it. Giving myself nostalgic feels.

I definitely had this guide as a kid. I had an original Gameboy and then got a Gameboy color w/ Yellow and this guide at 12 years old for Christmas '98, right after they came out. It's the only Pokemon game I fully played. Getting back into Pokemon now only because my 6yo just finished Let's Go Pikachu and we've been watching the original cartoon together. Looking to get him Sword for Christmas and I stumbled onto this nastalgia trip of a video while watching some videos on that lol. Thanks!

Here is a fun design choise at 3:39.
If you lose both battles, the game will be easier later on as Vaporeon is weak to your Pikachu. If you win both battles, you will have a harder time as Jolteon resists Pikachu's electric attacks. If you win the first battle but lose or pass on the second battle (neutral), the game will not change in difficulty as Flareon have no advantage over Pikachu and niether does Pikachu over Flareon.

When I played thru yellow as a kid I was the one person who wanted to evolve pikachu only to be horribly disappointed
Seeing this guide brought back memories of walking into Costco with my mom and seeing a pack with a yellow game boy color (not pikachu version), Pokemon yellow, and this guide. Somehow I was able to convince my mom to buy it for me and that was my first real experience playing Pokemon. I had watched the anime, but never had a chance to play the game, so getting yellow was perfect because it felt like the anime with getting Pikachu and everything. I loved using the guide to get me through since I probably would have been totally lost without it. Thanks for posting cool videos like this, I’ve enjoyed learning some of the gens I missed (3-5) and what those games were like.

Just an idea: if you run out of official guides, you should highlight community guides of various games. Remember those old text file guides? Yeah, those! Follow them and gage them on how well they help. Maybe even compare them to the official guides too.

What a blast from the past! I had this Guide. Used it often back as a kid
WITH ALL DUE RESPECT: I remember when I told my grandmother I wanted this book off the shelf, and surprised she said, "Really?" I said, "Yes, I'll read every page." She told me, "Show me you can read every page." I can't show her now, but playing Pokemon Go, with my sons and teaching them about different types and advantages and disadvantages, it really takes me me back to this 1st gen walkthrough I used to own.
